Abstract:Based on the introduction of basic conditions in west China, the major ecological environmental problems existing in the west China regions are analyzed and the countermeasures and suggestions of the conservation and construction of ecological environment in developing west China are put forward. The development of west China is a wonderful system project as well as an arduous and long term task, which might require the efforts of several generations. In the development of west China, the conservation of ecological environment should be given the first priority. We must improve our knowledge and take advantage of high technologies to energetically carry out Chinese eco agriculture, water saving agricultural practices, afforestation and soil erosion control projects.

Abstract:In “West Development” of China, one of the most important activities is the Natural Forest Protection Program, designed to swiftly convert the focus of management and utilization of the natural forests from a timber orientation towards forest conservation, sustainable management and environmental protection. The project covered almost all the arid and semi-arid regions in Northwest region. Accompanying this great campaign this paper studied the conservation and restoration model of degraded ecosystems in arid and semi-arid lands in Northwest China. The past practices have resulted in considerably natural forest degradation and loss through land conversion (primarily for agriculture), over-harvesting, inadequate reforestation and lack of protection. The consequences have been the loss of soil and water resources, diminished timber production capacity on a sustainable basis, and environmental losses. This paper applied Aronson’s restoration model and proposed the conservation, restoration, re-allocation and preservation program for the implementation of environmental improvement and natural forest conservation.

Abstract:s: The paper illustrates the main eco-environmental problems existing in northeast China, including the ecological functional degeneration of forest, wetlands, and black soils, and environmental deterioration of water and air pollution. According to the regional response to global environmental change, heavy industrial structure without obvious change, and new pollution problems without enough focus, the little change of severe eco-environmental situation will occur in future. So, the paper provides some countermeasures regarding economy, technology, culture and engineering to secure the sustainable development of eco-environment in northeast China.

Abstract:Along with the degradation of the global environment,restoration ecological research and restoration practices for degraded ecosystem have been developed as one of the scientific hotspots and public focuses around the world.China,whose ecosystem has degraded drastically,is one of the earliest countries which carried out the research and practice of ecological restoration.Since the 1950s China has authorized and put a number of ecological conservation and restoration projects in practice.The evaluation of ecological restoration effects is not only an indispensable element of these ecological restoration projects,but also can provide important information to modulate and optimize the further implementation of these projects.According to a systematic summary of the study progress on effects evaluation of ecological restoration in China,the paper supplies a brief account of effects evaluation from the aspects of its content,approach,method and technology,and based on analyzing problems of restoration ecological research and restoration practices for degraded ecosystem in China,five proposals are suggested to promote ecological restoration research in China.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Facing the need for transdisciplinary research to promote ecological restoration that achieves both social and ecological benefits, research on past restoration efforts that have directly or indirectly contributed to regional or national sustainable development warrants reassessment. Using China as an example, in this review, we address three basic research questions that can be summarized as follows: ecological restoration—of what, for whom and to what purpose? Accordingly, a ‘landscape pattern—ecosystem service—sustainable development’ co-evolutionary framework is proposed here to describe landscape-scale ecological restoration and its impact on landscape patterns and ecological processes, ecosystem services for human well-being, sustainable livelihoods and socioeconomic development. From the strategic pattern of national ecological security to the pattern of major projects to protect and restore major national ecosystems, the spatial pattern of China's ecological restoration is more geographically integrative. From major function-oriented zoning to systematic ecological protection and restoration, and for the purpose of achieving the Beautiful China Initiative, there are three stages of ecosystem services management: classification, synergy and integration, respectively. The difference in geographic processes should be considered in the key requirements of ecological restoration for China's five national strategies for regional sustainable-development strategies. Deepening understanding of the relationship between humans and nature in different geographical contexts is a scientific prerequisite to support policymaking related to ecological restoration. To promote greater harmony between humans and nature, we propose four important research directions: (i) understanding coupling processes among key components, (ii) identifying ecosystem service flows, (iii) evaluating social-ecological benefits and (iv) supporting adaptive management for regional sustainable development.

Abstract:China has emerged as a global economic powerhouse after four decades of unprecedented growth. Such growth has generated many environmental challenges with enormous ecological, socioeconomic, and health consequences in China and beyond. Although the overall quality of air and water is starting to improve, both are still below national and international standards. Water shortages are widespread. Biodiversity continues to decline. China is the world's top CO2emitter, although per capita emissions are much lower than those of developed counties. On the positive side, large national conservation programs have been implemented, including the Natural Forest Conservation Program, the Grain-to-Green Program, Ecosystem Functional Conservation Areas, and Ecological Protection Redlines. More than 2,750 nature reserves have been established and a new national park system is being constructed. Some endangered and threatened species, such as the giant panda, are showing signs of recovery, and forest cover and some ecosystem services have increased. These mixed environmental outcomes result from human-nature interactions within China as well as between China and adjacent and distant countries. These include increasing rapid economic growth, resource consumption, land use change, trade and investment, and conservation and development policies. We suggest systems approaches such as nexus approaches and flow-centered governance to help China achieve ecological civilization and become an environmental leader on a metacoupled planet.

Abstract:Natural wetland is one of the most important ecosystems on the earth. However, the natural wetlands in China suffered great loss and degradation due to the rapid growth of human population and economy, together with the long-term over-exploitation. Therefore, improving and restoring wetlands' various functions, such as slowing the runoff, flood control and drought prevention, water purification and restoring and rebuilding wetlands in the appropriate geographical places are the pressing issues human face today. Based on the fundamental concepts of the wetland restoration, this article expounded its principles and guidelines, illustrated three basic modes, and summarized the main goal and basic strategy in China. Finally the assessment and future trends of the wetland restoration were discussed.
Ecological and socioeconomic effects of ecological restoration in China's Three Rivers Source Region

Abstract:The Three Rivers Source Region, in the central Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, has a sensitive and fragile ecological environment. Adverse changes in climate and human activities have degraded the grassland ecosystems. To mitigate or reverse the degradation, alleviate rural poverty, and stimulate economic development, ecological restoration projects have been implemented. In the present study, our goal was to assess the ecological and socioeconomic effects of these programs based on land-use change, grassland NPP, and household surveys. Household data were collected using structured questionnaires in 11 villages from three counties, with average elevation above 3773 m asl. We found that the grassland degradation had been mitigated, especially after the implementation of ecological restoration programs since 2005 in a regional nature reserve in Qinghai Province. Household income depends strongly on the region's natural resources, so the grassland ecosystems are still at risk of unsustainable use. A household that understood the effects of the ecological restoration programs and had received training to participate in the programs was more willing to participate in future programs. Our findings suggest that for successful restoration, it is essential to help residents of the study area thoroughly understand the ecological restoration programs and learn the restoration techniques before implementation of such programs. This is because the participation of the residents depended strongly on both their income and their satisfaction with the ecological restoration programs.

Abstract:In this paper, the development process and characteristics of restoration ecology research in the arid regions of China were reviewed, and the research frontiers and development trends were analyzed systemically.The study on restoration ecology in arid regions has been promoted by national demands. Revegetation was the main method and approach for ecological recovery and restoration. Future study should focus on vegetation zonal distribution, soil habitat restoration, interaction of arid land ecology and hydrology, plant water relation, biological soil crust, projection based on models and modeling, and so on. The interaction and integration of geography and biology provide a new way of thinking and approach for both theoretical and practical innovations in the development of restoration ecology.

Ecological restoration zoning of territorial space in China: An ecosystem health perspective

Abstract:Rapid urbanization and high-intensity socio-economic activities in China have caused severe ecological problems. Implementing ecological restoration in China has become an inevitable way to restore the ecosystem. Ecosystem health is crucial for evaluating ecological conditions and trends, but comprehensive national studies that use quantitative ecosystem health assessments to guide specific ecological restoration are lacking. This study constructs the Vigor-Organization-Resilience-Services (VORS) model to evaluate the ecosystem health level of China during 2000-2020. Then, through the natural breakpoint and intelligent clustering correction, we carried out the ecological restoration zoning and proposed corresponding measures. The results show that China's overall ecosystem health declined from 2000 to 2020, and ecological restoration is imminent. The spatial pattern of ecosystem health is generally favorable in the south and usually poor in the north. China protects poor ecosystems' health well but needs more for better ones. To combat this degradation, we propose a zoning strategy that classifies the landscape into five categories: Ecosystem Conservation Areas (3.47%), focusing on biodiversity preservation; Ecosystem Enhancement Areas (10.53%), aiming at increasing ecological resilience; Ecosystem Buffer Zones (23.04%), intending to mitigate human impacts; Ecosystem Correction Zones (33.79%), targeting at restoring degraded ecosystems; and Ecosystem Reshaping Zones (29.17%), designing to revitalize ecological functions. The ecological restoration zoning in China proposed in this study, combined with appropriate and practical restoration tools, will help mitigate ecological problems and improve stability and ecosystem health.

Abstract:Abstract With the rapid development of rural urbanization, rural areas, especially in northwest China, have been exposed many problems. Living quality cannot be guaranteed. Environmental quality is deteriorating. Rural development has encountered the unprecedented problems and challenges. Under the background of the integration of urban and rural areas, the development of rural areas is also in a dilemma. In this research, based on the actual situation of Guanzhong region in Shaanxi Province, the rural villages are classified according to their resources, environment and formation time. At the same time, combined with previous literature, a group of villages has been selected as object to conduct on-site investigation and analysis including ecological environment, planning layout, public space, building energy saving and so on. Hopefully, the analysis of physical formation can makes people have a more in-depth understanding of sustainability. We are going to understand the problems encountered and solutions related in the sustainable development of rural areas from a critical perspective. By putting forward the corresponding strategies and development focus, a set of multiple sustainable development model for different types of villages has been summarized and proposed. Importantly, it can be some enlightenments for further studies.

Abstract:The total area of China is about 9.6 million km2. Among the terrestrial ecosystems, cropland area is about 1.33 billion ha, 78% of which is degraded land; forestland area is about 1.75 billion ha, 72% of which is forest deterioration; grassland area is 3.99 billion ha, 90% of which has already degraded. Derelict mining land area is about 6 million ha, which is increasing by 12,000 ha/year. So far, only 8% of the total derelict mining land area has been reclaimed. A total lake area of 1.3 million ha has been lost since 1950; 50% of the coastal wetlands has been reclaimed. The mangrove area has declined from 40,000 ha in 1957 to 18,841.7 ha in 1986. With a total of 0.18 billion ha of water area, over 50% of it has been polluted to type III–V in terms of the Chinese Water Quality Standard Classification System. Oceanic area is about 4.73 billion ha, over 1.6% of which is also polluted. Environmental pollution is very severe in China, especially the environmental problems in rural and agricultural areas. Water resource is severely lacking and most river ecosystems are facing deterioration. The oceanic environmental problem is still fearful. Water and soil eroded areas have been increasing year after year and have become the most severe environmental issue in China. In addition, land desertification, prairie deterioration, and land salination have been increasing at an accelerating rate. Forest function has weakened and the current environment in derelict mining land areas are headachy. Biodiversity has been destroyed badly. The reasons for the deterioration of China’s environment are diverse, such as the pressure of a large population, industrialization, and its markets. The deterioration of the ecological index has already affected the current economic index and prospective economic growth directly and obviously.

Abstract:Ecological environment pressure has been increasing steadily in China over time.The purpose of this paper is to assess ecological environment quality changes and its spatial variation.The data is collected from statistical yearbooks of 31 provincial administrative units in 1990,1995,2000,2005 and 2010.It provides a general assessment of ecological environment at provincial level and three economic regions from western to eastern China.In addition,the paper analyzes trend of ecological environment and gravity centre change of ecological environment quality.A geographic information system(GIS)and SPSS were used to carry out this study.Some conclusions can be drawn as follows.1)During 1990-2010,the rate of ecological environment reduced,but ecological environment still worsened.The paper argued that this trend of ecological environment in China was neither as results deterioration trend was under control which was noticed by government departments concerned,nor as many other scholars pointed out that the rate of ecological environment is increasingly intensified.2)On whole,from 1990 onwards,the ecological environment was worsening in China,but it was improved in some areas.The ecological deficit is still expanding and will continue for a period of time in future.3)From western to eastern China,the rate of ecological environment quality shows a downward trend.The reasons are good natural environment,as well as developed regional economy,technology and financial support.4)As economy has been developing rapidly in China for a long time,there has been an imbalance among population,economy,society and eco-environment in 31 provincial regions.The governments at all levels should give full play to role of eco-environmental protection and research.And it is imperative to take concrete measures,such as controlling population,improving environment and promoting sound economic development to balance socio-ecological system.
Terrestrial ecological restoration in China: identifying advances and gaps

Abstract:Abstract Background China has made great progress in ecological restoration. However, there have been no analyses on ecological restoration for specific terrestrial ecosystems. This study identified the important knowledge gaps and advances related to terrestrial ecological restoration in China. Results 7973 papers published between 1978 and 2020 were investigated and about 962 articles were used in this analysis after manually screening. Since the first large national ecological restoration project in 1978, the most frequently studied ecosystem has shifted from farmland ecosystems in 1978–2000 to forest ecosystems after 2000. Forests were the most common ecosystem type investigated, while less attention was paid to wetlands and riparian systems. Meanwhile, the most common ecological issue shifted from environmental pollution in 1978–2000 to the declining resource-carrying capacity of ecosystems after 2000. Studies of ecoregions on the Loess Plateau catchment accounted for more than 40% of papers reviewed in this study, with predominant emphasis on soil and water conservation functionality. Besides, revegetation and afforestation characterized most ecological restoration projects in China, but the natural restoration was relatively less adopted. Additionally, the important tool of reference ecosystem was only used in four studies. Conclusions Ecological restoration has made significant progress in China. We investigated how the ecological restoration can be implemented more effectively. More projects should be implemented for restorative work in wetlands and riparian systems in future. The tradeoff between restorative activities, water resources, and carbon sink needs further research efforts. More emphasis on biodiversity conservation is warranted. Newly developed theory (e.g., stepwise ecological restoration) and the recently issued Chinese National Guidelines for Ecological Restoration Projects should be more effectively implemented in future restorative works. This study provides essential information for future restorative work in China. It also provides insights into the development of policy relevant to restoration and adaptive management during the U.N. restoration decade.

Abstract:Under the background of urbanization and rural revitalization, along with the continuous development of rural economy in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, a series of rural ecological environment also follows. Through the investigation of Xicheng Village of Xintian Town, we fully understand the current situation and problems of local rural ecology, and put forward various suggestions for these problems. Maintaining the ecological environment of Xishan village in Xintian Town can not only stimulate the development of local economy, but also affect the steady development of the green sustainable development road of the whole northeast Chongqing region. Xishan Village of Xintian Town should clearly establish the goal of “ecological economy demonstration of overall development of urban and rural areas”, adhere to the principle of “development on the point, protection on the surface”, take the road of green development, and realize the road to wealth of green mountains and green water on Jinshan and Yinshan as soon as possible. Based on the analysis and study of the current situation and problems of the environment in the west village of Xintian Town, Wanzhou District, Chongqing, the relevant countermeasures and suggestions are put forward to improve the rural ecological environment in the Three Gorges reservoir area.
