Abstract:China accounted for 14.4% of the global exports of goods, ranking first in 2022, followed by the United States at 8.3%. As the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development commented, China has become a global trade titan, and its meteoric rise as perhaps one of the best stories of economic development has been both admired and questioned. This article discusses the reasons behind China becoming a global trade titan from the perspective of transport logistics by applying statistical analysis and case studies. The results show that the meteoric rise of China's trade is inseparable from China's development in transport logistics, especially investments in maritime transport construction and China Railway Express, which hugely promote the interconnectivity of transport infrastructure and reduce transportation duration and waiting time, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the imbalance of types of imports and exports in trade and the differences in infrastructure standards pose some problems. The research manages to give policy implications based on the existing problems of the current trade logistics system through case studies on Sino-US, Sino-EU and Sino-ASEAN trade relations and transport facilitation issues.

Governments usually offer tariff reduction or tariff exemption to encourage the development of processing trade. Abstract:The rapid pace of Chinas economic and trade development has been considered as a great success since the entry of WTO in 2001. Most recently, China has succeeded in coping with the global financial crisis and achieved a rapid V-shaped recovery which rebounded to two digit growth rate and lead to strengthening its international status. Nevertheless, China has exposed many potential problems in face of the financial crisis which due to international and domestic unbalanced features of Chinas economic operation system. The pattern of China Manufacturing and World Consuming is a game with no winners, while the investment leaded economic development mode achieves high growth rate but without enriches its own residents. The current imbalanced economic development mode cannot be sustained and shall be changed in the future which is not only the consensus of economists at home and abroad, but also a striving goal for the Chinese government for its 12th Five-Year Plan. However, China will face great and formidable challenges by changing the economic development mode to achieve an equilibrium state.

Abstract:This paper provides a comprehensive overview of China’s processing trade using highly disaggregated 2010 transaction-level data. By highlighting the key role of processing trade in China’s foreign trade, we argue that various free-trade zones have served as important instruments in boosting processing trade. We then explore various characteristics of processing imports from both industry-level and firm-level perspectives: origin countries of imports, main products, transport modes, entry ports, consumption destinations, quality of commodities, and scope of processing trade. A careful estimation of firm-level total factor productivity using the Olley–Pakes approach suggests that processing firms are less productive than non-processing firms. We also contribute to the literature by offering an efficient way of matching firm-level production data with transaction-level trade data, a rather challenging task due to data format restrictions.

Abstract:In the new millennium,two features have developed in China's macro-economy:The first is the close association of macroeconomic fluctuations with foreign demand shocks;the second is the addition of processing trade to the foreign demand structure and its eventual precedence over normal trade in gross value.Owing to the development of these two features,the classic International Real Business Cycles Theory has failed to explain China's macroeconomic fluctuation and meanwhile there has been little research on such a typical foreign demand structure.To fill the gap between theory and reality,this paper further categorizes the trade sector in the International Real Business Cycles Theory into processing trade and normal trade.Under such a categorization,two key assumptions are put forward:(1)the home elasticity of substitution for intermediate goods is relatively small in the processing trade sector;(2)the home value added for intermediate goods is relatively small in the processing trade sector.With these assumptions,two contradictory mechanisms of the home effect of foreign demand shocks emerge in partial equilibrium:Assumption 1 means that the processing trade sector is adjusted more readily in the case of foreign demand shocks;Assumption 2 means that it is adjusted less readily in that case.After calibrating and simulating the theoretical model,this paper examines the compound effect of the two contradictory mechanisms in general equilibrium.The results show that the foreign demand shocks in the processing trade sector more strongly affect China's investment and import/export,while those in the normal trade sector more strongly affect China's GDP.These results indicate a possible dilemma that the adjustment of China's foreign demand structure may encounter.In other words,the rise in the share of either the processing trade or normal trade will not reduce the influence of foreign demand shocks on China's macro-economy.The only difference lies in the fields affected most strongly by the shocks. As the model indicates,the dilemma in the macro-economy partially stems from the changes in China's foreign demand structure in the past decade,which reflects its comparative advantage in labor and technology in its participation in the global production process,a fundamental and constant fact.There is a need for greater tolerance for a more volatile Chinese macro-economy as it is the result of the encounter of economic fundamentals and globalization.It is necessary to explore new ways to reduce the volatility of Chinese economy,such as seeking bigger control in the global value chain and diversifying foreign markets.This paper is an attempt to incorporate China's foreign demand structure into an international real business cycle model,with the quantity characteristics of the processing trade and normal trade as the starting points of modeling.Future research may examine the links between different stages of the processing trade,which means that if one link in the supply of intermediate goods is affected,the whole production will be affected(the most famous example is the 2011 Fukushima earthquake,which led to an abrupt stop in the global semi-conductor industry).

Abstract:Since the beginning of the reform and opening-up period, China’s foreign trade has become one of the important drivers of economic growth. The proportion of exports in total gross domestic product (GDP) increased from less than 4 per cent in the initial period of opening up to its highest value, of 34.5 per cent, in 2007. China’s export growth has been largely related to the rapid development of processing trade. Before the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), processing trade accounted for more than 50 per cent of China’s exports. Processing trade has made great contributions to employment, industrialisation and foreign trade in China.

Abstract:This paper examines the main participants of China's processing trade regime – firms that engage in both processing and ordinary exports. By matching several datasets from China, including a unique sample of transaction‐level customs data with firms' branding information, we uncover three stylized facts. First, these "mixed" firms exhibit superior performance in various margins such as revenue and physical productivity. Second, even within firms, there is a link between export mode choice and brand ownership – own‐branded products are typically exported under ordinary trade while products under other firms' brands are exported under processing trade. Third, there is a price premium associated with selling one's own‐branded products. To rationalize these findings, we present a simple theoretical framework where firms with multi‐attributes (i.e., "making" and "creating") endogenously determine their specialization within a production network. We find evidence for the model's main prediction that firms in China intensified their branding activities when faced with favorable processing trade policies upstream.

"Internet +" is growing, gradually spreading all kinds of China's economic society, and its border e-commerce industry has developed rapidly, and has become the most dynamic business in today's international trade, so cross-border e-commerce development level to China Export trade plays a crucial role. This article will analyze the development status and existence of China's export cross-border e-commerce trade, and finally propose the development of cross-border e-commerce development to expand China's export trade, thus making better coordination China cross-border e-commerce and export trade. The relationship provides theoretical reference basis to promote the sustainable development of China's export trade.
Evolvement of Export Structure and Transformation of Trade Development Mode in China

Abstract:This paper analyses the evolvement of Chinese export structure and transformation of trade development mode during 1978 to 2007 from different views. The results show that Chinese export has been growing rapidly, its structure has been optimizing, and its trade development mode has been transforming. The proportion of processing trade is of absolute superiority in trade develop- ment, but it shows the downward trend in recent years. It has gradually formed a good race setup in the general trade, processing trade and other trade.

Abstract:Processing export plays a significant role in international trade. In this paper, focusing on firm level dynamics, we show that firms learn from their processing export experience to improve their subsequent ordinary export outcomes. Using transaction-level trade data and firm-level production data, we show that firms' ordinary export performance, at both extensive and intensive margins, is enhanced by their own processing experience. Firms also export products with improved quality after engaging in processing exports of similar products. Furthermore, we investigate potential channels through which firms learn from processing experience. We find that firms potentially learn from processing experience to enhance production efficiency, to better understand how to improve product appeal to cater to specific markets, and to gain better and easier access to inputs. Moreover, we find that exporters benefit more from processing experience for larger markets with fiercer competition. Similarly, stronger learning effects are also observed when processing experience is associated with products that embody less diffused knowledge and are more differentiated. Also, firms learn more from processing experience when they are more actively engaged in processing imports. Lastly, we verify the economic significance and quantify the importance of these potential channels.

Abstract:This is the first attempt to systematically investigate the effect of total factor productivity in Chinau0027s processing trade.Found in this article,processing trade,import and export of processing trade,they all does not promote the total factor productivity;we also found,the processing trade,imports and exports of processing trade will significantly inhibit technological changes,but changes in efficiency changes in technical efficiency and scale mixing efficiency changes had no significant effect.This article also found no effect of processing trade by foreign-invested enterprises,producer services,as well as fiscal decentralization significantly promotes productivity exist.While Jiangsu and Guangdong provinces in more than 60% of the total national proportion of processing trade,processing trade by inhibiting its technological change significantly inhibited the total factor productivity.The conclusions of this study do not vary with sample selection,model specification,variable selection as well as the endogeneity analysis and change.These findings imply that engaged in processing trade on a large scale can solve the employment promote growth on the surface of the processing trade,but may not be able to achieve economic catch-up,and even undermine the efficiency.Therefore,what participation in the global economy,and how to maximize the benefits of globalization,will be a huge challenge facing the future of the Chinese economy.

Cela n'a pas seulement favorisé les exportations de capitaux et de biens intermédiaires vers d'autres pays de la région, mais a aussi renforcé les réseaux de production régionaux au sein du système économique mondial dominé par les États-Unis. Le passage graduel de la Chine à la « nouvelle normalité »économique impliquera des périodes de transition au plan de sa structure économique et de son modèle de croissance. Son rôle au sein de l'économie de l'Asie de l'Est et du système économique mondial se transformera donc en conséquence, et sa position en tant que principal marché de biens de consommation finale pourrait ainsi s'accroître. Pour faciliter cette conversion, la Chine devrait poursuivre la transformation de son économie, développer la coopération économique dans la région et augmenter la qualité de sa main-d'œuvre et les entrées d'IDE. De plus, le pays doit gérer les nombreuses incertitudes qui peuvent marquer ces périodes de transition.Abstract:Since the 1990s, the development of a market-oriented economy and engagement with globalization have given China a role as the primary export platform of the East Asian economy. This has not only promoted the exports of capital and intermediate goods of other East Asian economies, but it has also deepened the regional production networks under the US-dominated global economic system. Currently, as China is entering an economic "new normal," its economic structure and growth pattern will experience a period of transition. Thus, its role in the East Asian economy and the global economic system will change accordingly. China's new role as a main market for the final consumer goods in the region might increase. To facilitate its change in role, China should continue to reform its domestic economy, develop regional economic cooperation, and increase the qualities of its labour force and foreign direct investment inflows. In addition, it needs to deal with several uncertainties that might arise during the transition.
How processing trade assists local industrial upgrading: input–output analysis of export processing zones in China

Abstract:Processing trade and related policies have been at the center of some major disputes concerning global segmentation. China has built numerous Export Processing Zones (EPZs) with the backing of local governments to facilitate greater integration into the global supply chain and boost local industrial upgrading. We create a series of backward and forward linkage indices and examine the spillover effect of the increase in EPZ processing trade on local economic activities and industry upgrades using Chinese firm-level industrial trade data and input–output table. Evidence reveals that EPZs have enhanced nearby enterprises' performance and productivity in the policy zone's upstream and horizontal industries. But the downstream industries show no signs of improvement. We also find that foreign-owned and young enterprises profit more from proximity to an EPZ. Additionally, the spillover benefits of EPZs are greater when the zone is moderate in size, supports high-tech industries, or encourages heavy import-and-assembly processing trade. The study sheds light on the processing trade's industrial linkage effects. The findings will provide an invaluable resource for developing policies aimed at both deeper integration into the global value chain and fostering local industrial upgrading.

Abstract:Abstract Since the global financial crisis of 2007/2008, China's foreign trade has continued to grow faster than international trade, but its drivers are now different from those prevailing before. The participation of the Chinese economy in the global production chains through processing activities is no longer the main driver of its trade performance. The new driving force of change is ordinary trade, based mainly on local inputs and domestic demand. China, which played a major role in the globalization process as an export base for multinational companies, is now shifting to having a “normal” foreign trade system, which is more closely integrated into the domestic economy.

Abstract:In the case of division of global value chains,the role of international in the economic development of a country is not reduced,but further increased.On the one hand,the participation in the division of value chains is becoming a contingent way to the involvement in international production system;on the other hand,international is an important safeguard for smooth operation ofglobal production.We cannot draw the conclusion of nagative contribution of trade simply from macroeconomic identical equation.China,as a huge manufacturing export country,with rapid economic growth,displays traits of balance with certain objective necessity.The external demand and domestic demand can not be separated.The period characteristics of China's economic development determine that foreign is still an important driving force for China's economic development.We should plan to upgrade an open economy in transition from the perspective of division of global value chain.Our objectives are to fully integrate China into the global production system,promote the upgrading of value chains,facilitate the integration of industrial policy and policy,actively carry out overseas investment,and make great efforts to achieve mutual benefit and win-win situation with the rest of the world.

Abstract:A rapid growth of international trade export has been seen in China since China's WTO access,which caused some upsets in involved countries.This article compares and analyzes the changes in China's international trade structures,growth of multinational companies' production in China and the progress of the east Asia trade integration,and concludes that,besides facts such as China's economy growth and changes in foreign trade policies,the growth of multinational companies production-processing export plays a significant role in contributing to the growth of China's international trade export.It also points out that multinational companies' involving in international trade promoted the agreement between Chinese FDI sources and trade partners,which consequently speeds the process of the east Asia trade integration.Because of their mutual-benefit relationship between China and its major trade partners and major FDI sources,growth of China's international trade export won't impair these countries.
