Abstract:An array antenna pattern synthesis based on a real-valued genetic algorithm is presented. The genetic algorithm model adopts some cross methods such as downwards extrapolate, upwards extrapolate and nonuniform cross operator. Moreover, this method integrates with interpolation and exchange to form compositive integrated cross method, by which it can get rid of the prematurity and the dependence of the convergence of conventional genetic algorithms on the initial population. At the same time, variance of nulls is joined the objective function to overcome the imbalance of nulls. Computer simulation proves that this method has advantages of fast convergence, nulls balance and reliability in array antenna synthesis compared existing algorithms.

Abstract:A complex number coded genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed which can be used in pattern synthesis of antenna arrays. Unlike conventional GA using binary coding and binary crossover, this method directly represents the array excitation weighting vectors as complex number chromosomes and uses linear crossover. To the fast convergence, this algorithm uses three chromosomes linear crossover method. Compared with conventional GA's this algorithm has a few advantages: giving a clearer and simpler representation of the problem, simplifying chromosome construction, and totally avoiding binary encoding and decoding. Computer simulations show that it can be used as a general tool for pattern synthesis of antenna arrays.

Abstract:The paper introduced the basic theories of intelligent algorithms, equally spaced linear antenna array and antenna pattern synthesis principle, also introduced the related omni-directional antenna. The procedure, parameter settings, characteristics of genetic algorithm and the neural network algorithms were demonstrated that used in the pattern synthesis, then the simulation programs were given. In the experimental stage, three groups of three different DOA of interference signal were applied to the antenna array model, respectively. The genetic algorithm and neural network algorithm were applied to the array pattern that simulated, then the simulation results were statisticed to compare their accuracy and robustness. At the same time, the linear antenna array model was established by the FEKO simulation software, whose antenna element is omnidirectional COCO antenna whose center frequency is 1.8GHz. The weight coefficient produced by genetic algorithm and neural network algorithm were applied to the excitation voltage of every array elements, whose amplitude and phase is controlled by the weight coefficient. Then the results were analyzed which came from the two intelligent algorithms with different interference signals.

Abstract:As the current pattern synthesis of antenna arrays cannot be used to suppress the sidelobe as well as keep with several prescribed nulls, a dynamic weight objective function model was proposed. According to the test of the fitness of objective function, the results demonstrate that this function model has a nice convergence characteristic. The experimental results show that about 3 to 4 dB reduction of side lobe can be obtained in the normalized patterns of the 10-element linear array by using the novel function model.

Abstract:A modified real genetic algorithm based on eigen-driven analysis method for pattern synthesis is presented in this paper. In the selection algorithm, the splitting selection mechanism is introduced to exploit the solution area better. A mixed crossover algorithm containing gene crossover, middle recombination and arithmetic crossover enlarges the searching area. Besides, it overcomes the prematurity of the convergence of conventional genetic algorithm. Excellent computer result proves the high precision of the algorithm. Because mutual coupling information is included in eigen-driven patterns, the algorithm based on eigen-driven patterns which are measured artificially in this paper solves the mutual coupling effects. So, this algorithm avoids complicating calibration process and has high practicality.
Efficient Synthesis of 4D Antenna Arrays Using a Bitwise Evolutionary Genetic Algorithm

Abstract:In this paper, a bitwise evolutionary genetic algorithm GA is proposed to synthesize the power patterns of 4D antenna arrays efficiently. Within the binary optimized time sequences of 4D antenna arrays, the genes of 1 and 0 represent switch-on and switch-off period of antennas, respectively. Gene retention probability, which relates to the fitness values of each individual in the whole group, is proposed to evaluate how good each gene is. With the proposed gene retention probability, the crossover operator in traditional GA is replaced with a new method to generate the next generation. The proposed algorithm is applied to the synthesis of 4D antenna arrays with binary optimized time sequences, and the performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with that of traditional GA on the condition of the same parameter settings. The comparison results show that bitwise evolutionary GA improves the optimization efficiency significantly, which reduces the computation time as much as 85% on average of the traditional GA with the same goal. Abstract:Antenna arrays with shaped patterns have drawn significant attention for their wide applications in radar, sonar and communication systems. The combination of genetic algorithm (GA) and fast Fourier transform (FFT) has been used to synthesise shaped pattern of antenna array's factor without considering coupling effects. In this work, the GA-FFT method is generalised by integrating with a new virtual active element pattern (AEP) expansion method which approximates each AEP as the radiation pattern by exciting several equally spaced virtual elements surrounding the real element position. The generalised GA-FFT can be applied for the shaped pattern synthesis of unequally spaced linear arrays including mutual coupling and platform effect. Several synthesis examples with different pattern shapes and different antenna structures are given to demonstrate the effectiveness, accuracy and robustness of the proposed method.

Abstract:An E-shaped conformal microstrip antenna array mounted on an irregular curved surface which is similar to an aerocraft cavity in shape is developed in this paper. In view of the narrow bandwidth of the microstrip antenna, an E-shaped element is applied instead of the traditional rectangular element. Furthermore, an element structure of uneven thickness is adopted in order to take into account the effects of the carrier on the resonance frequency and bandwidth of the conformal array. Then, an 8-element conformal microstrip antenna array is designed and the radiation pattern is synthesized using the modified genetic algorithms (MGAs). Compared with the standard genetic algorithms (SGAs), MGAs has a much more fast convergence speed and need less computational time to reach the expected value. The result shows that the optimized azimuth radiation pattern is almost omnidirectional and the elevation radiation pattern is concentrated in the horizontal direction. It can be seen that the proposed method of MGAs is an effective means for designing the conformal antenna array on an irregular curved surface.
Antenna Position Optimization Based on Adaptive Genetic Algorithm for Distributed Array Radar

Abstract:The detection performance of distributed array radar would be heavily influenced by the inappropriate design of antenna positions. Thus, an antenna position optimization method based on adaptive genetic algorithm is proposed. In the proposed method, the antenna position is directly coded as a chromosome with multiple constraints. And the fitness value of the chromosome is calculated according to the peak side lobe level (PSLL) of the beam pattern. Then, the probabilities of crossover and mutation are adaptively calculated for the chromosome. And the two-point crossover method and one-point mutation method are applied based on the adaptive probabilities. Because of the adaptive probabilities, the proposed method can not only obtain the antenna positons with lower PSLL, but also can get approximate PSLL with other methods by fewer antennas. Based on the simulation with linear coherent aperture radar, the proposed method is verified and the antenna positions with lower PSLL is get compared with conventional methods.

Abstract:An improved genetic algorithm for global optimization of electromagnetic field roblems isdeveloped in this paper. The reason for the slow convergence of the standard genetic algorithm is analyzed at first, then the improved genetic algorithm is proposed to expeditethe convergence. Techniques as partition of optimization process(random search stage and local optimization stage), novel criterion for new generation creation, adaptive updating of mutation probability and new stop criterion are introduced in the improved algorithm. The numeral results on a mathematical test and a practical problem both show the proposed method not only obtains better results, but also is timesaving and more robust compared with the standard genetic algorithm.

Abstract:Phased array antennas are frequently subjected to surface distortions due to environ-mental factors during operation. Such distortions can lead to a deterioration in the electrical performance of the phased array antenna. This study provides an in-depth analysis of the impact of array distortions on electrical performance indicators. An electronic compensation approach, employing an enhanced genetic algorithm, is proposed to mitigate the effects of these distortions. The conventional genetic algorithm has been augmented with an elimination mechanism to boost convergence. This method compensates for amplitude and phase by calculating each element's amplitude and phase of the excitation current, thereby enhancing the convergence performance. Simulations this approach, simulations of rectangular microstrip patch antennas are conducted to validate the effectiveness of this approach. The simulation outcomes reveal that the proposed method significantly improves the antenna's radiation pattern and all performance indicators, confirming its efficacy.

Abstract:In order to improve the Ambiguity-to-Signal Ratio (ASR) of spaceborne SAR, an adaptive Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed in this paper. By using the algorithm, ASR and antenna pattern are optimized simultaneously. Firstly, the ambiguity areas are determined, then the beamwidth and the side lobe level (including the side lobe level in the ambiguity areas of spaceborne SAR) of the antenna pattern are regarded as the objective function to synthesis the antenna pattern by using the adaptive GA. In order to avoid premature convergence, the crossover rate, the mutation rate and the mutation range are simultaneously adaptive during the optimization process. Compared to non-adaptive GA, the adaptive GA requires less iteration to converge and converges faster. The simulation results show that the ambiguity is depressed well via this method, which is quite useful to spaceborne SAR system designing.

Abstract:An improved evolutionary algorithm is proposed for the multi-objective design problems of electromagnetic devices. An emigration operator is designed to preserve the diversity and smooth the pareto front. The approaches such as the fitness sharing, the clustering method, and the elitism strategy are improved and extended. Two multi-objective optimal problems are solved using the proposed algorithm. The numerical results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm is a robust vector optimizer for engineering multi-objective design problems.

Abstract:This paper introduces a hybrid genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization algorithm (GA-PSO) dedicated to pattern synthesis of conformal antenna arrays. Taking advantages of both methods, the proposed hybrid GA-PSO optimization algorithm has fast convergence speed and high convergence accuracy when applied to antenna array pattern synthesis. To show the performance of the hybrid optimization algorithm, several typical test functions and optimization examples of a linear array pattern synthesis are illustrated. Finally, a 4 × 2 cylindrical conformal microstrip antenna array as a practical synthesis example is studied to demonstrate the proposed algorithm. The simulated and measured results have shown the proposed method is effective and reliable for conformal antenna array pattern synthesis.

This algorithm adjusts the actual pattern of arrays by modifying goal pattern in iteration. It can be applied to arbitrary array in which the individual elements have arbitrary radiation pattern. Some representative antenna arrays are synthesized to show the validity of the method, and the calculated results are presented and discussed.

Abstract:Sparse array antennas are significant in communication and radar systems due to the advantages of high resolution, low complexity, and immunity to interference. In this letter, a novel array synthesis method based on an improved genetic algorithm (IGA) is proposed to optimize the antenna position in the sparse array. Different from the traditional generic methods with high computational complexity, a method combined with Gaussian process regression (GPR) prediction is proposed to optimize the antenna position with low computational complexity. The proposed method can minimize the peak sidelobe level (PSLL) during the beam scanning procedures. Moreover, the minimum antenna spacing constraint is also considered to ensure a physically achievable solution. Simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve a lower PSLL with fewer iterations and provide a global optimization solution for large array synthesis compared with existing methods. Furthermore, a prototype of the sparse array principle optimized by IGA is designed. Measurement results indicate that the optimized sparse array has good synthesis performance in high frequency.
