Abstract:Categories such as animal or furniture are acquired at an early age and play an important role in processing, organizing, and communicating world knowledge. Categories exist across cultures: they allow to efficiently represent the complexity of the world, and members of a community strongly agree on their nature, revealing a shared mental representation. Models of category learning and representation, however, are typically tested on data from small-scale experiments involving small sets of concepts with artificially restricted features; and experiments predominantly involve participants of selected cultural and socio-economical groups (very often involving western native speakers of English such as U.S. college students) . This work investigates whether models of categorization generalize (a) to rich and noisy data approximating the environment humans live in; and (b) across languages and cultures. We present a Bayesian cognitive model designed to jointly learn categories and their structured representation from natural language text which allows us to (a) evaluate performance on a large scale, and (b) apply our model to a diverse set of languages. We show that meaningful categories comprising hundreds of concepts and richly structured featural representations emerge across languages. Our work illustrates the potential of recent advances in computational modeling and large scale naturalistic datasets for cognitive science research.

Abstract:The interpretation of polysemous phenomenon in traditional linguistics is not satisfactory, ignoring the relevance of each meaning. The prototype theory, metaphor and metonymy can explain the phenomenon and make up for the deficiency of traditional linguistics. Cognitive linguistics emphasizes the experiential and cognitive aspects of language. The generation of meaning in word-formation can be explained, which reflects that human cognition extends inward from human body experience and spatial perception to human mind and outward to external environment. In addition, polysemy is closely related to cultural factors, with interlingual commonness and interlingual differences. The findings can promote the the vocabulary teaching, requiring the combination of word meaning with people's cognitive experience.

Abstract:One of the central issues in cognition is identifying universal and culturally specific patterns of thought. In this study, we examined how one aspect of culture, a linguistic part of speech known asclassifiers, are related to categorization of solid objects. In Experiment 1, we used a numeral classifier elicitation task to examine the classifiers used by speakers of Hmong, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese (N = 34) with 135 nouns that referred to solid objects. In Experiment 2, adult speakers of English, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Hmong (N = 64) rated the similarity of 39 pictured objects that depicted a subset of the nouns. All groups classified the objects into natural kinds and artifacts, with the category of humans anchoring both divisions. The main difference that emerged from the study was that speakers of Japanese and English rated humans and animals as more similar to each other than Hmong speakers; Mandarin speakers' ratings of the similarity between humans and animals fell in between those of Hmong and English speakers. However, the pattern of categorization of humans and animals found among speakers of the classifier languages contradicted their patterns of classifier use. The findings help to tease apart the effects of language from other cultural factors that impact cognition.

Abstract:According to some traditional theories of categorization, human beings conceptually represent reality through judgments of similarity between the relevant features of some case, and the well-defined features of the concept that stands for the case. However, abstract concepts used with a moral sense do not have phenomenological resemblance with the cases they denote. In addition, concepts typically deployed in moral judgments are subject to semantic variation. Instead, this article proposes that moral categorization is based on an operational test that verifies whether certain impersonal (generic) and unconditional commands are observed or not in each specific case. The process of moral categorization is described using a cognitive procedure called "categorization by testing the command", consisting of five steps, namely: Descriptive stage, non-normative evaluation, normative question, conditional rule, and categorial construal. Finally, the phenomena of semantic polarity and semantic variation applied to the field of moral cognition are analyzed, to show how the proposed model can address the effects of these interpretive mechanisms.

Abstract:Human categorization is one of the most important and successful targets of cognitive modeling in psychology, yet decades of development and assessment of competing models have been contingent on small sets of simple, artificial experimental stimuli. Here we extend this modeling paradigm to the domain of natural images, revealing the crucial role that stimulus representation plays in categorization and its implications for conclusions about how people form categories. Applying psychological models of categorization to natural images required two significant advances. First, we conducted the first large-scale experimental study of human categorization, involving over 500,000 human categorization judgments of 10,000 natural images from ten non-overlapping object categories. Second, we addressed the traditional bottleneck of representing high-dimensional images in cognitive models by exploring the best of current supervised and unsupervised deep and shallow machine learning methods. We find that selecting sufficiently expressive, data-driven representations is crucial to capturing human categorization, and using these representations allows simple models that represent categories with abstract prototypes to outperform the more complex memory-based exemplar accounts of categorization that have dominated in studies using less naturalistic stimuli.

Abstract:People often learn categories through interaction with knowledgeable others who may use verbal explanations, visual exemplars, or both, to share their knowledge. Verbal and nonverbal means of pedagogical communication are commonly used in conjunction, but their respective roles are not fully understood. In this work, we studied how well these modes of communication work with different category structures. We conducted two experiments to investigate the effect of perceptual confusability and stimulus dimensionality on the effectiveness of verbal, exemplar-based, and mixed communication. One group of participants - teachers - learned a categorization rule and prepared learning materials for the students. Students studied the materials prepared for them and then demonstrated their knowledge on test stimuli. All communication modes were generally successful, but not equivalent, with mixed communication consistently showing best results. When teachers were free to generate as many visual exemplars or words as they wish, verbal and exemplar-based communication showed similar performance, although the verbal channel was slightly less reliable in situations requiring high perceptual precision. At the same time, verbal communication was better suited to handling high-dimensional stimuli when communication volume was restricted. We believe that our work serves as an important step towards studying language as a means for pedagogical category leaning.

Abstract:Differences in reasoning styles between Chinese and European Americans held even when controlling for the language of testing. Bilingual Chinese organized objects in a more relational and less categorical way than European Americans, whether tested in English or in Chinese. Thus, culture affects categorization independent of the testing language. Nevertheless, language affected some Chinese bilinguals' categorization. The responses of Chinese from the Mainland and Taiwan were more relational when tested in Chinese than when tested in English. Responses of Chinese from Hong Kong and Singapore were equally relational when tested in Chinese and in English. Age and context of learning English are discussed to explain the differential language effects among different Chinese groups. Theoretical and methodological implications are discussed.

Abstract:This paper aims to analyze the application strategies of Cognitive Linguistics in English vocabulary teaching. In the 1970s and 1980s, Cognitive Linguistics emerged as a prominent theoretical framework, providing new theoretical support for English teaching. This paper first introduces the basic concepts and principles of Cognitive Linguistics. Then, it discusses how Cognitive Linguistics can be applied to promote vocabulary acquisition, including the use of prototype, conceptual metaphor and image schema. Based on the literature review and analysis, this paper further examines the significance of context and collocation in vocabulary learning. Finally, it summarizes the advantages and challenges of the application of Cognitive Linguistics in English vocabulary teaching. This paper highlights the significant role of Cognitive Linguistics in vocabulary teaching and provides new insights and methods for future English teaching.

Abstract:Polysemy is a universal linguistic phenomenon, arising from the development of human society. Generally, there are three modes of meaning change: radiation type, chain type and synthetic type. Spring comes from the Old English springan, meaning a quick movement. The polysemy of the word "spring" is a good example of synthetic type, whose meanings are derived from the prototype meaning by metaphorical mapping. For English learners, only through constant input of vocabulary can they get a better grasp of English. However, in this process, due to the principle of linguistic economy, an English word possesses multiple meanings, i.e., polysemy. This poses a huge challenge for English learners. During this process, not only the students are supposed to be active, but the teachers should enhance their own cognitive abilities and guide students in comprehending the culture background of target language. Therefore, there is a need to find an efficient way to help English learners acquire polysemy.

Abstract:In the quest for unveiling novel categories at test time, we confront the inherent limitations of traditional supervised recognition models that are restricted by a predefined category set. While strides have been made in the realms of self-supervised and open-world learning towards test-time category discovery, a crucial yet often overlooked question persists: what exactly delineates a category? In this paper, we conceptualize a category through the lens of optimization, viewing it as an optimal solution to a well-defined problem. Harnessing this unique conceptualization, we propose a novel, efficient and self-supervised method capable of discovering previously unknown categories at test time. A salient feature of our approach is the assignment of minimum length category codes to individual data instances, which encapsulates the implicit category hierarchy prevalent in real-world datasets. This mechanism affords us enhanced control over category granularity, thereby equipping our model to handle fine-grained categories adeptly. Experimental evaluations, bolstered by state-of-the-art benchmark comparisons, testify to the efficacy of our solution in managing unknown categories at test time. Furthermore, we fortify our proposition with a theoretical foundation, providing proof of its optimality. Abstract:Social categories allow us to make sense of the social world and generate predictions about novel encounters. Yet, how people use particular social categories varies by culture. The current study examined how social categorization varies across traditionally individualistic and collectivistic societies among young children and adults. Using a triad picture task, American and Chinese children and adults made categorization and inductive reasoning judgments based on categories perceived as biological (e.g., age and gender) or categories perceived as social (e.g., occupation). The developmental trajectory of social categorization varied by culture: American adults were more likely than American children to categorize based on biologically-relevant categories, whereas Chinese adults were more likely than Chinese children to do so based on socially-relevant categories. Chinese participants also relied on socially-relevant categories (occupation) to make predictions about physical properties more than American participants. The current findings suggest a broad cultural influence on the perceived meanings and structures of certain biologically- and socially-based categories.

Abstract:Social categorization is often thought to be based on facial features and immune to visual context. Moreover, East Asians have been argued to attend to context more than Westerners. American and Chinese participants were presented with faces varying along a White-Asian morph continuum either in American, neutral, or Chinese contexts. American contexts made White categorizations more likely, and Chinese contexts made Asian categorizations more likely. Further, the compatibility between facial and contextual cues influenced the directness of participants' hand trajectories en route to selecting a category response. Even when an ultimate response was not biased by context, the trajectory was nevertheless partially attracted to the category response associated with the context. Importantly, such partial attraction effects in hand trajectories revealed that the influence of context began earlier in time for Chinese relative to American participants. Together, the results show that context systematically influences social categorization, sometimes altering categorization responses and other times only temporarily altering the process. Further, the timing of contextual influences differs by culture. The findings highlight the role of contextual and cultural factors in social categorization.

Abstract:How universal is human conceptual structure? The way concepts are organized in the human brain may reflect distinct features of cultural, historical, and environmental background in addition to properties universal to human cognition. Semantics, or meaning expressed through language, provides direct access to the underlying conceptual structure, but meaning is notoriously difficult to measure, let alone parameterize. Here we provide an empirical measure of semantic proximity between concepts using cross-linguistic dictionaries. Across languages carefully selected from a phylogenetically and geographically stratified sample of genera, translations of words reveal cases where a particular language uses a single polysemous word to express concepts represented by distinct words in another. We use the frequency of polysemies linking two concepts as a measure of their semantic proximity, and represent the pattern of such linkages by a weighted network. This network is highly uneven and fragmented: certain concepts are far more prone to polysemy than others, and there emerge naturally interpretable clusters loosely connected to each other. Statistical analysis shows such structural properties are consistent across different language groups, largely independent of geography, environment, and literacy. It is therefore possible to conclude the conceptual structure connecting basic vocabulary studied is primarily due to universal features of human cognition and language use.

Abstract:Categorization systems are widely studied in psychology, sociology, and organization theory as information-structuring devices which are critical to decision-making processes. In the present paper, we introduce a sound and complete epistemic logic of categories and agents' categorical perception. The Kripke-style semantics of this logic is given in terms of data structures based on two domains: one domain representing objects (e.g. market products) and one domain representing the features of the objects which are relevant to the agents' decision-making. We use this framework to discuss and propose logic-based formalizations of some core concepts from psychological, sociological, and organizational research in categorization theory.

Abstract:The study was to investigate the effect of categorization levels on bilinguals' semantic access, which provides evidence supporting the image-involved access model of basic-level category words. In Experiment I, randomly presented English stimuli of three levels of category (e.g., instrument-drum-base drum) were judged by unbalanced Chinese-English bilinguals on whether they were live creatures or not. In Experiment II, a long-duration repetition priming paradigm was used, where English stimuli served as primes and their Chinese translation equivalents as targets. Another group of participants performed the same semantic judgement task as in Experiment I. Total fixation durations were recorded in both experiments. A one-way analysis of variance was used to analyze participants' whole fixation durations. The results from eye-movement data showed that the effect of categorization levels existed on L2 semantic access among unbalanced Chinese-English bilinguals, but not on L1 semantic access. Additionally, no significant English-Chinese (L2-L1) priming effect occurred by adopting a semantic judgement task. This study appears to be one of the first to investigate the effect of categorization levels on bilingual semantic access and provides new insight into the field of bilingual word processing.

Abstract:Based on the brief review of some psychological theories of emotions and the introduction on our model for emotion parsing: Model of context based emotion detection from the text input, this paper constructs a Categorizing Emotional Vocabularies, which can be classified into emotional keywords, metaphor words and modifier words. The main categories and the sub-categories of the emotional vocabulary keywords will be introduced and the general syntactic rules of emotion vocabularies, for instance, influences in the syntactic structures or the sequences of part of speech (especially adjectives, adverbs and verbs) will be analyzed further.
