Abstract:DEM-based generation of high quality contours with properties of convexity, smoothness and flatness has gradually become a key research area for creating contour maps. The existing generation methods have some deficiencies including hardness, intersection and abnormal closure of contours generated in the terrain change ar-eas, such as channels and ridges. In view of the above-mentioned facts, taking a 1:50 000 DEM in the loess hilly region as the test data set, this paper analyzes the basic conditions of reconstruction contours based on densified DEM grid with high quality and efficiency, and examines the accuracy of different interpolation approaches in the process of this reconstruction. Utilizing the comparative analysis, this paper proposes a novel method to gen-erate and represent contours with high quality based on densified DEM grid scheme and terrain shading tech-nique. Experiment results show that: (1) the interpolation approaches include bilinear function, cubic convolu-tion, local quadratic polynomial, and completely regularized spline function. In view of the extreme values, the discrete degree, and the spatial distribution of elevation numerical error, regularized spline function is the opti-mal interpolation method to reconstruct surface morphology, followed by local quadratic polynomial, cubic con-volution, and bilinear interpolation. (2) The contours, which are generated by densified DEM grid via the com-plete regularized spline function with taking 4 × 4 DEM grid cells as a search circle, are more accurate and smoother. In the above process, the resolution of densified DEM grid is the actual distance of 0.1mm in the visu-alized maps. (3) For the terrain with a known generalization scale, there exists an optimal resolution threshold for the DEM. To reproduce the original contours with high quality, the corresponding resolution of DEM cannot be lower than the optimal threshold. (4) The superposition technique between contours and DEM hillshadings at-tached with a white mask could effectively enhance the three-dimensional effect of contour maps and hence make high quality contour maps incorporating scalability and imaginability.

Abstract:Digital elevation model (DEM) data are widely used in many research areas such as hydrological analysis and soil erosion models. To generate an accurate DEM is very important to the validity of such researches. Generating DEM from contour lines is now a main method to get grid DEM. In the implementation of GIS software, usually the elevation of a cell with only one contour line (SVC) is simply assigned with the contour line elevation when discretizing vector contour lines. But most of the time, the elevation of the contour line can't characterize the elevation of the SVC accurately. In this paper, we choose different resolutions (cell size) to investigate the frequency of SVCs during DEM generating and the errors created by simply assigning their elevations with the contour line elevations. A new method is given, in which we analyze the spatial relationship between the SVC and the corresponding contour line. And at last, a zone of Inner Mongolia is chosen to prove the validity of the new method.

Abstract:The expression of quick-speed integration formation of DEM and contours under 3D and virtual circumstance is introduced in this paper.First,the realization process of quick-speed generating DEM based on two kinds of algorithms of mobile fitting and mobile weighted average method is discussed.The interpolation of that mobile fitting method replaced by mobile weighted average method can heighten greatly interpolation efficiency in the bizarre area of sampling point.Under 3D visualization environment,the principle and method of DEM and contour integration display is discussed,and the triangle surface string sequence method is discussed in emphasis,too.At last,an actual example is given in the valley harnessing planning application.

Abstract:The mining subsidence in high underground water mining area has high vegetation density, so unmanned aerial vehicle photogrammetry couldn't get the point cloud of the ground.To address this problem,this paper proposes a new DEM establishing method of mining subsidence areas based on the cross-sectional point cloud filtering and the revision of original DEM from the perspective of terrain feature of mining subsidence areas.This new establishing method can meet the precision analysis of 1 : 500 topographic map and can provide important basis for ground damage evaluation and land reclamation.

Abstract:This paper introduces a simple but practical method to create high-quality contour line for grid data.In the key step of this method(the process of contour tracking),the paper puts forward the concept of grid right-correlation flag to determine the initial segment of tracking curve.In the tracking procedure,the trend of subsequent points are determined by the combinatorial values of neighborhood cells,and a method is designed to avoid contours crossing.In order to obtain high-quality contour line,it adopts the linear interpolative method to show a contour chart of accurate localization and better visual effect.This paper also introduces the implementation tips with program languages,the presented codes are very laconic and easy to realize.

Abstract:Two calculating methods of DEM-based Grid data structure for area have been proposed, and one of the calculating methods called flood submersion is quite characteristic. The accuracy of area is mostly dependent on the contour interval of map, accuracy of digitizing map, accuracy of DEM, and interval of GRID, detecting resolution of pixels. The smaller contour interval, the fewer errors of digitizing; The denser interpolating of DEM, The shorter span and the higher detecting resolution, the higher accuracy. The efficiency of the presented algorithm model is influenced by the detecting resolution and spatial data gross. Finally, the key technical method of virtual reality and visualization of area with OpenGL is discussed. Some practical applications for the given model implemented in the Water Conservancy Management Information System are provided in the last sections, which show that the model and algorithm are effective.

Abstract:The existing grid-based DEM has several disadvantages in representing the features of real terrain s urface, such as peak clipping, channel filling, etc. And abrupt changes in elevation cannot be handled easily and precisely. The inherent size of grid mesh affects the DEM computing, analysis and results. Through the discussion of DEM terrain distortion, the representative types of distortion were analyzed and the possible reasons of distortion were given in this paper. A brief review of the existing DEM data structures was showed and a technique for correcting the existing grid-based DEM was presented to try to solve the problem mentioned above and improve the precision of the terrain surface represented by the DEM. The method developed a new and simple data structure of DEM. It is based on the raster structure and integrated terrain features to the grid cell of existing DEM. Experiment was also made to test the results of correction method.

A Parallel Approach for Contour Extraction Based on CUDA Platform

Abstract:— Contour is a powerful tool for spatial analysis, which has been widely applied in the research of marine background field. However, it is still a challenge to efficiently extract contours from ocean remote sensing data in large scale. In this paper, we propose a parallel approach for contour extraction based on the analysis of GPU’s parallel architecture and CUDA’s flexible programmability. A contour tracing algorithm is implemented through block searching, which reduces the times of grid traversal and avoids the search of excluded cells. The proposed approach was experimented with different sizes of Sea Surface Temperature data. The results show the effectiveness and efficiency of the approach especially for large scale data, demonstrating that GPU has its novel advantage compared to the CPU with a high speed-up ratio.

Abstract:Digital Elevation Model is one of the most important fundamental geographical datasets in National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). How to improve the accuracy and applicability of existing contour based DEM is one of key issues in DEM updating. Existing approaches mostly by the new technique which need more financial support. This paper presents a DEM oriented correction strategy that directly modified the elevation of local areas in DEM by virtue of raster based terrain feature datasets. Experiments indicate that this approach has good correction accuracy. Some more work that improves the accuracy and applicability of this correction strategy is worth doing better in future.

Abstract:To improve the efficiency of reverse modeling, a new grid-based segmentation method not using triangulation of unorganized points was proposed. The method estimated curvature by coordinate transformation method, calculated the enclosure box of a large amount of measured points and subdivided the box into many 3D grids, each 3D grids containing some scattered points. The grid's curvature was set as the maximum principal curvature of the point nearest to the grid center. According to the grid's curvature and location, a special function describing the curvature difference between the grid and its neighbors was built. Based on this function the edge-grids were detected and the point cloud was partitioned into several regions based on the connectivity of 3D grids. Application results prove that the proposed method can process point cloud directly, and is feasible and efficient in the segmentation of data sampled from objects with edges.
Comparative Studies of the Algorithm for Establishing DEM in Flat Area

Abstract:Digital Elevation Model(DEM) is one of the basic data for GIS;it is also the important basis for spatial analysis related to the elevation of the study area.The accuracy of DEM affects the result of the geoanalysis and application,so research on high accuracy of DEM interpolation algorithm will be of great importance in geoanalysis and application.A DEM interpolation algorithm-ANUDEM which is based on automatic drainage enforcement algorithm is introduced.The comparison of ANUDEM algorithm and TINDEM algorithm(i.e.traditional DEM interpolation algorithm-generating DEM from TIN) suggests that,in the rugged area,the accuracy of the two algorithms is closed,and the effect of the two DEMs is both very good.In the flat area,the accuracy of the ANUDEM algorithm is higher than TINDEM,and the DEM generated with ANUDEM algorithm avoid the flat hilltop and ladder-shaped terrain very well.The contour and the water stream derived from DEM generated by ANUDEM are fitted to the original data well.The result of this study suggests that compared to the TINDEM algorithm,the ANUDEM algorithm is more suitable for flat area DEM establishment.

Abstract:A new digital elevation model (DEM) upscaling method based on high accuracy surface modeling (HASM) is proposed by combining the elevation information of DEM and the valley lines extracted from DEM with different flow accumulation thresholds. The proposed method has several advantages over traditional DEM upscaling methods. First, the HASM ensures the smoothness of the upscaled DEM. Secondly, several DEMs with different topographic details can be obtained using the same DEM grid size by incorporating the valley lines with different flow accumulation thresholds. The Jiuyuangou watershed in China’s Loess Plateau was used as a case study. A DEM with a grid size of 5 m obtained from the local surveying and mapping department was used to verify the proposed DEM upscaling method. We established the surface complexity index to describe the complexity of the topographic surface and quantified the differences in the topographic features obtained from different upscaling results. The results show that topography becomes more generalized as grid size and flow accumulation threshold increase. At a large DEM grid size, an increase in the flow accumulation threshold increases the difference in elevation values in different grids, increasing the surface complexity index. This study provides a new DEM upscaling method suitable for quantifying topography.

Abstract:In terrain mapping, there are so many ways to measure and estimate the terrain measurements like contouring, vertical profiling, hill shading, hypsometric tinting, perspective view, etc. Here in this paper we are using the contouring techniques to generate the contours for the different digital elevation data like DEM, HGT, IMG etc. The elevation data is captured in dem, hgt and img formats of the same projected area and the contour is generated using the existing techniques and applications. The exact differences, errors of elevation (contour) intervals, slopes and heights are analyzed and recovered.

Unlike the existing methods, the contour line is extracted in image space. In order to accelerate root-finding procedure, Bezier clipping and subdivision algorithm are used in the proposed method. Abstract:How to process depression and flat areas and their drainage direction is a key issue and must be solved prior to the extraction of drainage network based on the digital elevation model(DEM).This paper investigates the shortcomings of the ex- isting methods for the complex terrain DEM with depressions and flat areas, and proposes several new methods, namely, the classification and the merger of depressions, the valid filling depression, the classification of flat areas, and the construction of the drainage direction based on the flow cost for the river valley plains.These methods can be performed in the software system developed by authors.The test shows that the methods mentioned above can be used to process complex depressions validly and construct flat areas water flow direction in the consideration of the ambient terrain and astringency to the potential waterway. And they are proved to be rational.In addition, by using the methods, odd waterways such as parallel and pseudo ones can′t be generated in the extraction of the drainage network.Hence the results obtained are consistent with the real situation.

Abstract:The traditional unresolved CFD-DEM method is designed for fluid grid sizes larger than particle sizes, and improved methods are imperative when encountering cases with fluid grid sizes comparable to particle sizes. This study attempts to develop an unresolved CFD-DEM method that applies to different-sized grids and can be easily implemented on commercial platforms using unstructured grids, aiming to greatly help engineers solve engineering problems without investing much effort into choosing appropriate simulation methods and designing fluid grids. To this end, the new method considers interphase force correction at the particle level and field smoothing at the cell level by constructing a spherical search area whose size is determined by particle sizes. Mass conservation is strictly guaranteed in the new method, which is essential to simulations involving chemical reactions. The accuracy and universality of the new method are comprehensively evaluated by two test cases. The first test case is conducted in a spouted bed discretized by unstructured grids of three sizes. The results demonstrate that the new method not only applies to comparable-sized grids but can yield the same predictions as the traditional method in large-sized grids. In other words, the new method is universal as long as grid sizes lie at the unresolved level. Thanks to the simplicity of the algorithm, the new method does not compromise calculation efficiency. The second test case is conducted in a draft tube-type feeder discretized by non-uniform unstructured grids. By comparing with experimental measurements, the main features of flow patterns, pressure drop characteristics, and mass flow rates are reasonably predicted, confirming the capability of the new method to simulate complex gas-solid flows with non-uniform unstructured grids. Users do not need to make any adjustments to the new method once it is implemented on commercial platforms. In the future, the new method can potentially become a universal method to simulate gas-solid flows and greatly help engineers solve engineering problems.
