Abstract:Wetland is a unique ecosystem, rich in biodiversity. It is not only a valuable land resource, it also protects rare animals and plants, therefore it is of high economic value and scientific significance. This paper studies the present situation and development trends of wetland in Guangdong Province, China, with remote sensing technology. The total wetland area of Guangdong Province is 1 864 101 ha. The type, distribution, environment and use of wetland in Guangdong Province was investigated and wetland resource and environment were assessed in coastal areas. The strategies and countermeasures for wetland use and protection are recommended for decision making.

Abstract:The Yangtze River Delta is the alluvial plain before the longest river in Asia and the largest economic zone in China. It includes Zhejiang Province, Jiangsu Province and direct-controlled municipality Shanghai. As it is facing the most pressure of environment, resources and population with the rapid economic development, construction of ecological parks that can protect natural environments and restore urban environments are essential. And the protection of wetlands plays the key role in ecological landscape construction where many wetlands, lake areas, riverine areas and coastal areas lie. In recent years, China has devoted more and more attention to the construction of Wetland Ecological Parks with the promulgation of "Assessment Standard of National Wetland Park" and "Construction Regulation of National Wetland Park". Typical cases of wetland ecological parks from Yangtze River Delta area are discussed in this paper, including those from Hangzhou City, Taihu Lake area and Chongming Island. Meanwhile, Hong Kong Wetland Park which is acclaimed in the Asia-Pacific region is used as a reference. The design focus, design ideas and landscape elements, especially ecological design of horticulture are summarized in this research based on field survey. Four main construction principles are put forward in order to provide reference for the ecological protection of similar areas.

Abstract:In order to provide scientific supports for watershed sustainable development,operation and management, Nanxi River was selected as a typical red-soil region,and ecosystem health assessment methodology and pressure analysis combining remote sensing(RS),geographic information system(GIS)and multi-index were applied.The ecosystem health assessment was classified into two categories:water area and terrestrial area,and the indices were divided into six sections including habitat structure,aquatic organisms,ecological pressure of water area and ecological patterns,ecological function,ecological pressure of terrestrial area,which consisted of 16 sub-indicators.The results showed that the health condition of the study area was good,and only the aquatic organisms and ecological function were in ordinary condition.Among them,83.3% of sub-basins were in good condition,while the others were in ordinary condition,and all of them were located in the downstream areas.Human disturbance was the major reason of the degradation of watershed ecosystem health,such as rapid growth of urban land areas,excessive livestock breeding and fishing. In order to improve the health conditions, more attention should be paid to adjusting the scope of the conservation areas,controlling pollution from point and nonpoint sources as well as protecting the biodiversity.The proposed assessment methodology can comprehensively indicate the health condition of Nanxi River.This case study could make a contribution to guiding the watershed management in ecologically fragile areas,and ensuring the water ecological health of the basin and its downriver.

Abstract:Wetlands are important natural resources for humans and play an irreplaceable ecological function in the terrestrial ecosystem. To curb the continued loss of wetlands globally, international organizations and many countries have taken a series of major conservation and restoration measures. This work reviews these wetland conservation and restoration measures, interprets China's wetland conservation and restoration management policies, and proposes that future research on wetland resources in China should be conducted from the aspects of international frontiers and national strategic plans, socioeconomics, and smart services. The results show that the 27 International Wetlands Days from 1997 to 2023 provided new goals and tasks for the protection and management of wetlands. The important topics and outcomes of the 14 Conferences of the Contracting Parties to the Convention on Wetlands from 1980 to 2022 provided new directions and new challenges for wetland development. In the future, we should enhance wetland ecological functions, promote sustainable wetland development, and overcome the technical bottleneck of fragile wetland ecosystem restoration. From 1992 to 2022, China embarked on a new phase of wetland protection and restoration. The overall experience of wetland protection and restoration in China has been formed through national strategic deployment, legal policy establishment, and project planning and implementation. The needs to provide for and plan the long-term protection of wetlands at the national level, to innovate restoration and management techniques and application systems, and to effectively address the complex issues of wetland protection and restoration through collaborative division of labor among multiple departments were emphasized. Research on the future trends of wetlands should be directed towards the exploration and practice of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and several international conventions in support of sustainable wetland development. Wetland protection, restoration, and management services should be promoted for national strategic needs and local, high-quality social and economic development. In addition, research on cross-integration and academic innovation should be enhanced for disciplinary development, global supervision, comprehensive assessment, and smart decision making.

Abstract:Studies on natural resources and the environment status, ecological protection, popular science education and safeguard system were carried out in Xixi National Wetland Park, Hangzhou, China. Values of the natural resources and the environment were obtained. These values were used to estimate the value of ecosystem services of Xixi National Wetland Park. An indicators system for ecological monitoring and evaluation, and a popular science education and safeguard system were established. Technologies for ecological protection and restoration, rehabilitation and restoration of bird habitat were presented. A development strategy of ecotourism was analyzed and an integrated estimation on the ecotourism carrying capacity was made. These research results will be very beneficial to the scientific conservation and sustainable development of Xixi National Wetland Park and lay a solid foundation for Xixi National Wetland Park to be built and become the demonstration base of national wetland park. Suggestions for further researches in Xixi National Wetland Park were also proposed in the paper.
On How Wetlands Can Provide Flood Resilience in a Large River Basin: A Case Study in Nenjiang River Basin, China

Abstract:Wetlands are often acknowledged as a nature-based solution for improving flood resilience in a large river basin. However, the effects of wetlands on floods have not been assessed as extensively within a large river basin, as previous studies have mainly focused on assessing the effect on peak flows of a certain given return period. In this study, a distributed hydrological modeling platform was used to (i) quantify the effect of wetlands on floods with respect to event hydrographs, and (ii) investigate how flood regulation services can occur on the rising and falling limbs of an event hydrograph. Further, we hypothesized that flood resilience depends on the distribution and location of wetlands in the basin. The hydrological modeling study was conducted on a 297,000-km(2) large river basin in Northeast China, where wetlands are abundant covering approximately 12% of the basin area. Our modeling study show that wetlands can reduce peak and mean flows, event duration, and flow volume (i.e., runoff volume) by, respectively, 24% (12.14 mm), 12% (4.37 mm), 4% (1 day), and 17% (18 x 10(8) m(3)) in this large river basin. The attenuation efficiency of these wetlands varied with their location and size in the basin, especially apparent on peak flow, mean flow and flow volume on the rising limb of a flood event. These findings highlight flood regulation services and attest that wetlands can exhibit different effects; that sometimes they may amplify flood conditions. Thus, wetlands are an important land cover for enhancing resilience to flood events within large river basins, and wetland protection and restoration ought to be important conservation measures.

Abstract:The temporal and spatial dynamics of biodiversity and its future trends are of great significance for maintaining biodiversity pattern and ensuring regional ecological security in the Nanliu River Basin of Beibu Gulf. At present, most studies are concerned with the assessment of biodiversity in historical period, but few studies focused on the prediction of biodiversity under several scenarios in future years, and the history and future spatial simulation of habitat quality has not been carried out. Therefore, the establishment of biodiversity simulation studies under different scenarios in the future plays a crucial role in the sustainable development of regional social economy. This study takes Nanliu River Basin, which only flows into the sea in the Beibu Gulf, as the research object. Based on land use data and social and economic data interpreted from remote sensing data in 2000, 2010 and 2020, Conversion of Land Use and its Effects at Small Region Extent (CLUE-S) model was used to simulate and predict land use patterns for ecological protection scenarios, natural growth scenarios and food security scenarios in 2030. The Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Service and Tradeoff (InVEST) model was used to evaluate the biodiversity of different scenarios in the past and future and discuss the habitat quality and degradation degree of biodiversity in the watershed. Results were presented as follows. In 2000–2020, an increasing trend of construction land, shrub land and water area was found in the Nanliu River basin of Beibu Gulf. The largest increase was observed in construction land, and the largest decrease was noted in cultivated land and woodland. The best habitat quality will be under the ecological protection scenario in 2030. The biodiversity in the upstream and downstream of the three scenarios showed varying degrees of improvement, and the midstream exhibited a degradation trend. The research results of this paper can make up for the vacancy of biodiversity habitat evaluation system in Nanliu River Basin at home and abroad, and have important theoretical and practical significance for promoting ecological protection and ecological planning of watershed.

Abstract:China implemented the National Wetland Conservation Program (NWCP) from 2002 to protect and rehabilitate wetlands. Under the background of sustainable development, assessment on the effectiveness of the NWCP is important to ecosystem management, especially in the Sanjiang Plain, the largest marsh distribution area and hotspot area with wetland loss. To achieve this aim, this study examined the changes in land cover and ecosystem services (ESs) from 1990 to 2000 and from 2000 to 2015 in the Sanjiang Plain as well as the nine national nature reserves for wetlands (NNRWs) by means of Landsat series images and the InVEST model. Results reveal that the NWCP played critical roles in reducing wetland loss and improving regional ESs. The shrinkage rate of wetlands in the Sanjiang Plain has been decreased remarkably, with a declined rate of wetland loss from 750 km2 yr−1 to 189 km2 yr−1. The reduction rate of habitat area in good suitable grade and ecosystem carbon stock declined notably during the period 2000–2015 compared to the period 1990–2000. The amount of water retention increased by 5.4%, while the grain production capacity was enhanced by nine times from 1990 to 2015. Specifically, since 2000, the reduction rate of wetland area in NNRWs (33 km2 yr−1) was obviously lower than that in the entire Sanjiang Plain, whilst various ESs in NNRWs were better than that in the whole Sanjiang Plain. This study is expected to provide an example for evaluating the effectiveness of the NWCP at other regions and support regional wetland conservation management.

Abstract:Wetlands provide a wide range of ecosystem services, and so their conservation and wise use are receiving increasingly greater attention globally. China has a wealth of wetland ecosystems that are well known as hot spots of biological diversity. China has experienced a serious loss of wetlands owing to rapid urbanisation, population growth and industrialisation. Some of the major threats and challenges to wetlands are related to habitat degradation, loss of biodiversity and weaknesses in their protection and management. In this paper we review the distribution of wetlands in China and discuss the key factors that degrade these wetlands. We further discuss management strategies and make recommendations to strengthen the network of wetlands in China.

Abstract:Wetland is rare economic resources and provides with important ecological values. The conservation and sustainable utilization of wetland have been paid close attention by the whole world. The significance of wetland, including land supply, water replenishment, biodiversity conservation and ecological service is analyzed and it is considered that wetlands are important strategy resources for the development of Shanghai. This paper analyzes the current situation of wetland conservation and utilization in Shanghai, and probes into as well the harmonious development of wetland conservation and utilization in Shanghai in the field of silt utilization, conservation zone adjustment and scientific utilization. Finally, some policy suggestions are given to promote the coordinated development of wetland conservation and use in Shanghai from the point of coordinating mechanism, function area division, harmonization of inning and conservation, normalizing utilization, pollution control, legal guarantee and scientific information sharing, etc.

Abstract:The Naban River is an important river in Naban River Watershed National Nature Reserve (NRWNNR), Xishuangbanna. Research about the aquatic ecology is very important for sustainable utilization of water resource in NRWNNR. Field investigations were conducted at 7 sampling sites by using macroinvertebrates as indicators to assess the aquatic ecology in the Naban River in October 2012. The level of rubber cultivation intensity in the 7 sites was different. The results showed that with the increase of rubber cultivation intensity, the biodiversity of macroinvertebrates trended to decrease. The abundance ratio of Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera and Plecoptera to total macroinvertebrates trended to decrease. The abundance ratio of Diptera trended to increase. The abundance ratio of predators trended to decrease. Based on the results, methods for protecting and restoring the aquatic ecology in the Naban River were proposed.

Abstract:The Lancang-Mekong River significantly affects the livelihood of residents in the basin as well as the lives of people in other regions of the world in terms of great development potential and its economic and ecological values. In the meanwhile, the river attracts the attention of countries in the basin and the international community because it raises potential for international conflicts. The Lancang-Mekong River leaves China from Xishuangbanna and the ecosystem status in Xishuangbanna constitutes one of the top concerns related to the basin. The study comprehensively evaluates the status of freshwater ecosystem health of the Lancang River in Xishuangbanna for the first time, with reference to aspects of ecosystem vitality, ecosystem services, as well as governance and stakeholders, firstly, linking the ecosystem and the benefits it provides as well as human activities as an organic whole. The methodology used, Freshwater Health Index, is newly developed and constitutes revision of the first attempt of its usage. Basically, the freshwater ecosystem in the studied area and period remains healthy according to the research, and the ecosystem is considered to be capable of providing sufficient services and benefits to meet the economic and societal development demands. Recommendations are proposed for more sustainable local freshwater management and utilization accordingly.
Construction of Wetland Ecological Security Pattern in Wuhan Metropolitan Core Area Considering Wetland Ecological Risk

Abstract:Wetlands play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance. Preserving the ecological security of wetlands is critically important for regional environmental protection and sustainable development. However, in the core area of the Wuhan metropolitan circle, which is rapidly urbanizing, its wetlands are more susceptible to external natural environmental risks, such as changes in temperature and rainfall, as well as risks to human activity, such as social and economic activities, urban expansion, land use changes, and population growth. Meanwhile, the internal vulnerability of wetlands in terms of their spatial extent, structure, and functions also exacerbates ecological risks. These factors collectively influence the formation and development of wetland ecological risks. This study aims to comprehensively assess wetland ecological risks in the core area of the Wuhan metropolitan circle by combining external hazards and internal vulnerabilities and to construct and optimize the wetlands' ecological security pattern. We used the MSPA method to identify potential ecological sources. Additionally, the MCR model was employed to integrate ecological risk assessment results into the resistance surface, identify potential ecological corridors and nodes, construct the wetland ecological security pattern for the urban circle, and propose specific optimization strategies. In total, 31 primary and 106 secondary ecological sources were selected, along with 20 primary and 42 secondary ecological nodes. Furthermore, 10 major ecological corridors were constructed. Considering the landscape characteristics of the wetlands in the core area of the Wuhan metropolitan circle, the southern Yangtze River region will center around the Liangzi Lake group to establish a crucial corridor network, promoting overall wetland restoration and connectivity. Meanwhile, the northern Yangtze River region will form a chain-like distribution along the river, creating diverse ecosystems. This study provides a theoretical foundation for constructing and optimizing the ecological security pattern of wetlands, laying a solid groundwork for promoting regional wetland conservation and sustainable development.

Abstract:Ecological networks serve as vital tools for safeguarding biodiversity and ensuring regional ecological stability. This study, conducted in Wanning City, employs minimum-area threshold analysis to pinpoint crucial ecological sources while extracting potential ecological corridors using the minimum cumulative resistance model. Our investigation delves into the ecological network's elements and structural transformations within Wanning City, spanning the period from 2000 to 2020, and assesses the priorities for ecological network preservation. The findings of our research reveal noteworthy spatial disparities in the distribution of ecological sources across Wanning City. Furthermore, the ecological corridors display sparse patterns in the north and denser patterns in the south. Over the two decades from 2000 to 2020, Wanning's ecological resources exhibited a discernible trend of contraction and fragmentation, accompanied by an uneven spatial distribution. The average path length of the ecological corridors has increased, indicative of reduced biological flow efficiency. Correspondingly, the structural accessibility of the ecological network has decreased, signifying a decline in landscape connectivity. Based on our analysis, we propose an ecological protection and restoration framework denoted as "One Belt, Four Sources, Eight districts, multiple corridors, and multiple points". Therefore, with the Shangxi–Jianling, Liulianling, Nanlin, and Jiexin nature reserves as the core area, and Houan Town, Damao Town, Changfeng Town, and Liji Town as the key restoration areas, we have proposed an ecological protection and restoration pattern.

Abstract:National Wetland Parks (NWPs) are a unique form of protected areas in China that have experienced a rapid increase in number from zero to more than 900 over the past two decades. We examine the underlying causes of the boom in NWPs and assess their far-reaching ecological and socio-economic impacts. Utilising GIS information and vector maps, we analysed the spatial distribution of pilot and approved NWPs from 2005 to 2019. Document analysis was employed to explore resource-orientated and legal drivers that have prompted the growth of NWPs. China's NWPs developed in three phases, namely, the exploration phase (2005–2007), the expansion phase (2008–2014) and the normalisation phase (2015–present). The demand for outdoor recreation and improved wetland legislation were the primary facilitators for the growth of NWPs. The expansion of NWPs is an important contributor to nature conservation and ecological civilisation, yielding a range of ecological, economic and social benefits. China's experiences in NWPs offers valuable lessons and implications for global nature conservation. Implementing a long-term management mechanism for NWPs is recommended to enhance the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.

Status of Wetland Research in China

Abstract:This study used a bibliometric approach to quantitatively evaluate the status of wetland research in China using detailed information from 31794 articles retrieved from the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) database and published from 1999 to 2019. We outline the progress of wetland research in China in terms of the number of articles published, active research institutions, funding provided, research directions, dynamic changes in the focus of the research and development trends. By analysing high-frequency keywords, we conclude that there are four focus areas of wetlands research in China: (1) climate change; (2) wetland pollution; (3) wetland plants and microorganisms; and (4) the conservation and management of wetlands. By combining focus area and high-citation analysis, we show that carbon storage and organic carbon mineralisation, biological remediation, constructed wetlands for the treatment of waste water and the sustainable use of ecological services are currently the most notable research areas, with a marked increase since 2009. These topics are in line with the focus of research globally over the past 6 years and are likely to become a primary research focus in future. The results of this study provide a useful theoretical basis and directions for further research in the sustainable development of wetland resources in China.
Multi-Source Remote Sensing Data for Wetland Information Extraction: A Case Study of the Nanweng River National Wetland Reserve

Abstract:Wetlands play a vital role in regulating the global carbon cycle, providing biodiversity, and reducing flood risks. These functions maintain ecological balance and ensure human well-being. Timely, accurate monitoring of wetlands is essential, not only for conservation efforts, but also for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this study, we combined Sentinel-1/2 images, terrain data, and field observation data collected in 2020 to better understand wetland distribution. A total of 22 feature variables were extracted from multi-source data, including spectral bands, spectral indices (especially red edge indices), terrain features, and radar features. To avoid high correlations between variables and reduce data redundancy, we selected a subset of features based on recursive feature elimination (RFE) and Pearson correlation analysis methods. We adopted the random forest (RF) method to construct six wetland delineation schemes and incorporated multiple types of characteristic variables. These variables were based on remote sensing image pixels and objects. Combining red-edge features, terrain data, and radar data significantly improved the accuracy of land cover information extracted in low-mountain and hilly areas. Moreover, the accuracy of object-oriented schemes surpassed that of pixel-level methods when applied to wetland classification. Among the three pixel-based schemes, the addition of terrain and radar data increased the overall classification accuracy by 7.26%. In the object-based schemes, the inclusion of radar and terrain data improved classification accuracy by 4.34%. The object-based classification method achieved the best results for swamps, water bodies, and built-up land, with relative accuracies of 96.00%, 90.91%, and 96.67%, respectively. Even higher accuracies were observed in the pixel-based schemes for marshes, forests, and bare land, with relative accuracies of 98.67%, 97.53%, and 80.00%, respectively. This study's methodology can provide valuable reference information for wetland data extraction research and can be applied to a wide range of future research studies.

An evaluating system for wetland ecological risk: Case study in coastal mainland China

Abstract:Coastal wetland degradation and fragmentation contribute to habitat and biodiversity loss. We construct wetland ecological risk assessment framework to evaluate the risk posed to 35 coastal wetland national nature reserves (NNRs) in China for the years 2000 and 2020. Our wetland ecological risk index (WRI) is based on an external hazard sub-index (EHI) and an internal vulnerability sub-index. Most NNRs have low EHI values in both 2000 and 2020. Ratios of change in EHI range from −22.76% to 52.15% (a negative value indicates a decrease, a positive value an increase), and the EHI for 20 of 35 NNRs (57.1%) decreases over time. Variation in the internal vulnerability index ranges −44.78% to 88.97%, and increases at 18 NNRs (51.4%) over time. WRI variation ranges between −48.13% and 82.91%, and increases at 19 NNRs (54.3%). Most NNRs are ranked as being at low, medium risk in both 2000 and 2020. Notably, the number of high-risk NNRs increases from 3 to 10 (for which WRI values also increase). Expansion of built-up land, cropland occupation (in 2020), road disturbance, and water quality are all significantly associated WRI. Intensified management of the 10 NNRs ranked at high risk is necessary to prevent further deterioration.
