Abstract:Camellia oleifera is a woody oil tree species unique to China that has been cultivated and used in China for more than 2,300 years. Most biological research on C. oleifera in recent years has focused on the development of new varieties and breeding. Novel genomic information has been generated for C. oleifera , including a high-quality reference genome at the chromosome level. Camellia seeds are used to process high-quality edible oil; they are also often used in medicine, health foods, and daily chemical products and have shown promise for the treatment and prevention of diseases. C. oleifera by-products, such as camellia seed cake, saponin, and fruit shell are widely used in the daily chemical, dyeing, papermaking, chemical fibre, textile, and pesticide industries. C. oleifera shell can also be used to prepare activated carbon electrodes, which have high electrochemical performance when used as the negative electrode of lithium-ion batteries. C. oleifera is an economically valuable plant with diverse uses, and accelerating the utilization of its by-products will greatly enhance its industrial value.

Abstract:AbstractCamellia oleiferastands out as one of China’s leading woody oil crops, famed for its tea oil, which boasts a high content of unsaturated fatty acids. Often referred to as "liquid gold" or "Oriental olive oil," this oil is prized for its nutritional benefits and culinary versatility, marking Camellia oleifera as a valuable agricultural and economic resource. This study provides an integrated investigation of the transcriptome and lipidome within seeds at the maturation stage across threeC. oleiferavarieties, revealing a significant relationship between fatty acid production and genes involved in lipid synthesis. Through transcriptomic analysis, 26,344 genes with varied expression were found. Functional enrichment analysis highlighted that pathways related to starch and sucrose metabolism, plant hormone signal transduction, and lipid accumulation were highly enriched among the differentially expressed genes. Additionally, expression variations ofSADandFADsamong different varieties were explored. The analysis suggests that increased expression of genes such asFAD3,FAD7, andFAD8during the maturation stage may enhance the proportion of linolenic acid while reducing oleic acid content. This alteration could potentially stimulate fatty acid synthesis through a feedback regulation mechanism, thereby enhancing seed oil content. These findings provide a novel perspective on the feedback regulation mechanisms underlying lipid biosynthesis inC. oleiferaseeds, offering significant insights to boost oil yield and improve tea oil quality.

Abstract:Camellia oleifera is an important woody oil crop in China, and its seed oil has a high economic value. Anthracnose, one of the main diseases in C. oleifera, occurs in a wide range in the production areas, limiting the growth and development of plants and causing serious losses of oil production. With the rapid development of the C. oleifera industry in recent years, great progress has been achieved in the research on anthracnose in C. oleifera. This paper summarized the resistance mechanisms, the mining of resistance genes, and the evaluation of resistant germplasm resources, aiming to provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of anthracnose and the breeding of C. oleifera germplasm with resistance to anthracnose.

Abstract:Camellia oleifera Abel, a woody oil plant, that is endemic to China. Tea oil, also referred to as "oriental olive oil," is a superior quality plant-based cooking oil. The production of tea oil accounts for 8% of the total edible vegetable oil production in the country. Since 2022, the annual output value of C. oleifera industry has exceeded 100 billion yuan, making it one of the major economic contributors to China's rural revitalization development strategy. In recent years, demand and production have grown in parallel. However, this has led to an increase in the incidence levels of pest and diseases. Pests and diseases significantly reduce the quality and yield of C. oleifera. C. oleifera diseases are mainly caused by pathogenic fungi. C. oleifera anthracnose, soft rot, leaf spot, coal stain, leaf gall disease, and root rot are the most important fungal diseases affecting the C. oleifera industry. However, the same disease may be caused by different pathogenic fungi. C. oleifera can be found in half of China and is found in several climatic zones. The geographical distribution of woody plant diseases is consistent with the distribution of the tree species and the ecology of the range, which also results in a highly complex distribution of fungal diseases of C. oleifera. The management of fungal diseases in C. oleifera is extremely challenging due to the variety of pathogenic fungal species, multiple routes of transmission, the lack of resistant plants, and the environmental safety of chemical measures. The optimal strategy for addressing fungal diseases in C. oleifera is to develop and apply an integrated disease management plan. This review provides a brief overview of the pathogenic species, pathogenesis, pathogenesis, geographical distribution, current management strategies, and potentially new methods of C. oleifera fungal diseases, to provide direction for the development of comprehensive management measures for C. oleifera fungal diseases in the future.

Abstract:: Camellia oleifera is the dominant woody oil crop in China. According to current records, the cultivation history of C. oleifera as an oil crop may be less than 1,000 years, and the Yangtze River Basin may be one of the earliest cultivation areas. Wild relatives of C. oleifera are valuable genetic resources for breeding. Camellia oleifera belongs to Sect. Oleifera of the genus Camellia in the family Theaceae. Wild relatives of C. oleifera may include species in Sect. Oleifera and Sect. Paracamellia . However, the division of Sect. Oleifera and Sect. Paracamellia is still under debate, and the phylogenetic relationships among species re-main unresolved. Sect. Oleifera and Sect. Paracamellia have the highest frequency of polyploids in the genus Camellia , and the same species may have various ploidies, which may be promoted by artificial selection and interspecies hybridization. The Yangtze River Basin is the main production area of C. oleifera , and the main distribution area of wild C. oleifera , thus containing rich genetic resources of wild C. oleifera . This study analyzed the distribution of species in Sect. Oleifera and Sect. Paracamellia of the genus Camellia and compared the results with the potential distribution areas of wild C. oleifera . Results show that drainage di-vides between the Yangtze River Basin and Pearl River Basin (Nanling Mountain, Miaoling Mountain, and adjacent regions) have the highest diversity of species in Sect. Oleifera and Sect. Paracamellia . Meanwhile, these regions are also potential highly suitable growing regions for wild C. oleifera , where there may be potential interspecies hybrid zones between C. oleifera and its wild relative species. Species diversity decreases from the south to the north, likely representing the dispersal direction from south to north. The potential interspecies hybrid zones between C. oleifera and its wild relative species may contain rich genetic diversity and provide natural breeding stations for selective breeding. These regions should be priority areas for re-search and conservation in order to explore and utilize genetic resources with important economic values.

Abstract:Camellia is one of the four main oil-bearing trees along with olive, palm, and coconut in the world. Known as “Eastern Olive Oil,” camellia oil shares similar chemical composition with olive oil, with high amounts of oleic acid and linoleic acid and low saturated fats. Camellia was first exploited for edible oil in China more than 1000 years ago. Today, its oil serves as the main cooking oil in China’s southern provinces. Introduction of camellia oil into the Western countries was delayed until the recognition of its many health benefits. Although popularity for the oil has yet to grow outside of China, interest has emerged in commercial production of camellia oil in other countries in recent years. Unlike seed-oil plants that are grown on arable land, oil camellias normally grow on mountain slopes. This allows the new crop to take full usage of the marginal lands. To facilitate promoting this valuable crop as an alternative oil source and selecting promising cultivars for targeted habitats, this paper reviews the resources of oil camellias developed in China, use of by-products from oil-refining process, as well as the progress of developing camellias for oil production in China and other nations.

The Experimental Study on Callus Induction of Two Species of Oil-tea Camellia in Anther Culture

Abstract:Cultured anthers of two species of Oil-tea Camellia in vitro to induce callus. The results show a great difference between Camellia meiocarpa and Camellia semisenrata in callus induction. Camellia semisenrata is easy to induce anther callus while Camellia meiocarpa is hard for a deadly browning occurring in its cultivation. Culture media with different types and consistency of hormone have a great influence on callus induction. Pretreatment with low temperature for 6 to 12 days can raise the ratio of callus induction. MS-medium can promote callus growing and propagation. Additionally, the article had discussed the anther browning of Camellia meiocarpa in cultivation.

Abstract:Abstract To assess the adaptability of Camellia oleifera for introduction in new growth locations, this study evaluated 10 representative C. oleifera cultivars from the main areas in China where this oil-producing evergreen crop is grown. Cluster analysis, correlation analysis, and membership function analysis were used to evaluate various indices of the selected C. oleifera cultivars, including flowering phenology, cold tolerance, leaf structure, pollen characteristics, and pollen viability. The correlation analysis identified the full blossoming time, leaf palisade and spongy tissue thickness, pollen deformity rate, and pollen activity as key indices for determining the adaptability of the cultivars to new areas. The membership function analysis of the 10 C. oleifera cultivars revealed the following order of adaptability: ‘XLC25’ > ‘Changlin4hao’ > ‘Ganzhouyou8hao’ > ‘Ganzhouyou6hao’ > ‘Tiechengyihao’ > ‘Eyou465’ > ‘XLC10’ > ‘Changlin3hao’ > ‘Changlin18hao’ > ‘QY235.’ When introducing C. oleifera cultivars to new regions, the higher-ranked cultivars are more likely to be successful. The results of this study may provide a new direction for the comprehensive assessment of plant introduction and domestication potential, i.e., the assessment of the vegetative and reproductive growth, adversity resistance, and blossoming time of plants.

Abstract:The Camellia oleifera industry is hindered by the substandard quality of its fruits and the low yield of camellia seed oil. Although soil factors have been shown to affect the productivity of this plant, the relationship between C. oleifera characteristics and soil properties and nutrients remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated soil factors within the central distribution area of this species. Our findings revealed that this plant thrives in acidic soils with a medium cation exchange capacity. There were moderate differences in the main and medium element contents in the soils, while the variation of microelements was significant. Overall, C. oleifera cultivated soils were poor, with an uneven distribution of soil nutrients. Most of the shape characteristics of camellia fruits showed moderate variability, whereas dry kernel rate and oil content exhibited minor variability. The fatty acid profiles remained stable across different planting sites, but there were higher variations in the content of active compounds. Fruit shape characteristics were primarily influenced by soil properties, while soil nutrients mainly affected the seeds and kernels of the fruit. Minor fatty acid content could be influenced by soil properties and nutrients, except for total nitrogen (TN), which specifically affected the content of palmitic acid and oleic acid. There was no significant correlation between soil factors and sterols, polyphenols, and tocopherols, while squalene was affected by soil properties. Our study highlights the importance of considering soil properties and nutrients in the cultivation of C. oleifera and emphasizes the need for rational fertilizer application.

Abstract:In this paper,five cultivation modes of experiment which are interplant of Soybean,peanut,mung bean,kidney bean and the covering grass,were explored to discuss the effects of different cultivation on Camellia oleifera,soil microorganisms and enzyme activities.The results indicated that new-tip length,the yield of single tree and oil yield of the five cultivation modes had significantly differences,except for fresh seeds yield.The quan-tities of microbes and the activities of enzymes in the rhizosphere soil were higher than in the non-rhizosphere soil. Based on the above analysis,interplant of soy beans and mung beans were the most beneficial modes to C.Oleif-era.The bacteria was significant correlation with various kinds of soil enzyme and oil yield,which illustrated that the quantity of bacteria could be used as biological indicator to detect soil fertility,and providing the basis to judge C.Oleifera oil production.

Abstract:Camellia oleifera Abel. is an economically important woody oil plant native to China. To explore the genetic diversity of wild C. oleifera phenotypic traits and effectively protect these germplasm resources, this study provides a thorough evaluation of the phenotypic variability of a cluster of 143 wild C. oleifera germplasm resources. A total of 41 characters, including leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds, and oil quality characters, were investigated based on the quantization of physical and chemical descriptors and digital image analysis. The findings revealed significant variations among the 41 characters with a high range of Shannon–Wiener indexes ( H ′) from 0.07 to 2.19. The coefficient of variation (CV) among 32 quantitative characters ranged from 5.34% to 81.31%, with an average of 27.14%. High genetic diversity was also detected among the 143 germplasm. Based on the analysis of hierarchical clustering, 143 accessions were separated into six categories. All the individuals can be clearly distinguished from each other according to the result of the principal component analysis (PCA). The M-TOPSIS exhaustive evaluation method based on correlation and PCA analyses of 32 quantitative characters was applied for the 143 wild C. oleifera accessions, and the top 10 varieties were identified as YA53, YA13, YA40, YA34, YA57, YA19, YA33, YA41, DZ8, and YA7. This research optimized the germplasm evaluation system and perfected the statistical phenotypic traits for distinctness, uniformity, and stability (DUS) testing. Some top-notch germplasm sources were also screened for oil-tea Camellia breeding.

Abstract:The tissue culture is the technical system of plant fast reproduction.In this article the present research progress in Chinese peony tissue culture was summarized,including seed culture,stem-tip culture,bud culture,young leaf culture,petiole culture,root culture and so on.The results indicated: the technique of peony tissue culture already gradually not only tended to the consummation,but also had the difficulty in the large scale production,fewer species cultured,the culturing material brown and vitrification,root growth and suitable medium,appropriate explants and so on.The technical objective,future direction and industrialization of Peony breeding were put forward.

Abstract:Camellia oleifera is intensively cultivated in subtropical areas of China, exposing soils to various threats. However, the effect of long-term cultivation of Camellia oleifera on soil properties remains unclear and needs to be elucidated to improve soil and Camelia oleifera sustainable management. This study collected soil samples from different Camellia oleifera planting ages (2, 10, and 40 years) and performed aggregate fractionation and various analyses including physico-chemical, soil organic matter chemical composition analyses and a semi-quantitative analysis of organic carbon functional groups to investigate the effect of long-term cultivation of Camellia oleifera on soil macroaggregates (< 2 mm), mesoaggregates (2-0.25 mm) and microaggregates (< 0.25 mm) formation, soil organic matter (SOM), available nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), and available potassium (AK). The aggregate particles increased with increasing Camellia oleifera planting ages. Camellia oleifera long-term cultivation did not affected the soil pH in the aggregates, but significantly ( P < 0.05) increased SOM concentration with the decrease in soil aggregate size. Similarly, Phenolics-C, ketones-C, lignins-C, and alkenes-C increased in soil aggregates with increasing cultivation time and are mainly distributed in < 0.25 mm fraction. The aromatics-C, carboxylic-C, aliphatic-C, and polysaccharides-C declined with increasing cultivation time and were mainly distributed in 2-0.25 mm and < 2 mm fraction. AN is abundantly distributed in 2-0.25 mm and its abundance increases with Camellia oleifera long-term cultivation. All soils were poor in AP and AK. Our study indicated that long-term cultivation of Camellia oleifera promoted soil aggregate formation, increased available nitrogen (AN), soil organic matter (SOM) and controlled the change of SOM chemical composition. However, our study recommended providing available phosphorus (AP) and available potassium (AK) in soil with Camellia oleifera cultivation for sustainable management.

Abstract:An investigation of wild germplasm resources of Camellia japonica L. was conducted. The remaining natural distribution of the species is restricted in Changmeiyan Island, Daguan Island and the top of Laoshan Mountain. Only 506 trees were observed and their habitat has been severely damaged. However, contributed by protection measures taken in recent years, these remaining wild trees are growing very well.

Abstract:Camellia oleifera oil is a pure and natural high-grade oil prevalent in South China. Camellia oleifera oil is known for its richness in unsaturated fatty acids and high nutritional value. There is increasing evidence indicating that a diet rich in unsaturated fatty acids is beneficial to health. Despite the widespread production of Camellia oleifera oil and its bioactive components, reports on its nutritional components are scarce, especially regarding systematic reviews of extraction methods and biological functions. This review systematically summarized the latest research on the bioactive components and biological functions of Camellia oleifera oil reported over the past decade. In addition to unsaturated fatty acids, Camellia oleifera oil contains six main functional components contributing to its antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anticancer, neuroprotective, and cardiovascular protective properties. These functional components are vitamin E, saponins, polyphenols, sterols, squalene, and flavonoids. This paper reviewed the biological activity of Camellia oleifera oil and its extraction methods, laying a foundation for further development of its bioactive components.
Assessment of genetic diversity in Camellia oleifera Abel. accessions using morphological traits and simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers

Abstract:Camellia oleifera Abel. (C. oleifera) is a cultivable plant with important economic value. It is very helpful for the scientific utilization, cultivation and preservation of germplasm resources through evaluating the genetic diversity. In this study, we estimated the genetic relationship of 150 accessions of C. oleifera using morphological and economic traits, as well as SSR molecular marker. Through the variation and cluster analysis of 17 morphological and economic traits, the germplasm was divided into a candidate core breeding group with higher economic traits and a core breeding group with higher morphological traits. The genetic similarity coefficients of SSR markers ranged from 0.05 to 0.91, and the germplasm materials were divided into five groups. The results demonstrated that C. oleifera germplasms perform a rich genetic variation. This is the first report to evaluate the genetic diversity of different C. oleifera germplasms using the morphological and economic traits, together with SSR molecular marker, and the results allow us to find evidence for the origin of varieties, establish core breeding populations and its fingerprint.

Abstract:Camellia seed oil, extracted from the seeds of Camellia oleifera Abel., is popular in South China because of its high nutritive value and unique flavor. Nowadays, the traditional extraction methods of hot pressing extraction (HPE) and solvent extraction (SE) are contentious due to low product quality and high environmental impact. Innovative methods such as supercritical fluid extraction (SCFE) and aqueous extraction (AE) are proposed to overcome the pitfalls of the traditional methods. However, they are often limited to the laboratory or pilot scale due to economic or technical bottlenecks. Optimization of extraction processes indicates the challenges in finding the optimal balance between the yield and quality of oils and phytochemicals, as well as the environmental and economic impacts. This article aims to explore recent advances and innovations related to the extraction of oils and phytochemicals from camellia seeds, and it focuses on the pretreatment and extraction processes, as well as their complex effects on nutritional and sensory qualities. We hope this review will help readers to better understand the trends, challenges, and innovations associated with the camellia industry.
