Abstract:Thermal management of textiles requires local microclimate control over heat and wet dissipation to create a comfortable thermal-wet environment at the interface of the human body and clothing. Herein, we design a fabric capable of both sweat- and cooling-management using a knitted fabric featuring a bilayer structure consisting of hydrophobic polyethylene terephthalate and hydrophilic cellulose fibers to simultaneously achieve high infrared (IR) transmittance and good thermal-wet comfort. The IR transmission of this cooling textile increased by ~ twofold in the dry state and ~ eightfold in the wet state compared to conventional cotton fabric. When the porosity changes from 10 to 47% with the comparison of conventional cotton fabric and our cooling textile, the heat flux is increased from 74.4 to 152.3 W/cm2. The cooling effect of the cooling fabric is 105% greater than that of commercial cotton fabric, which displays a better thermal management capacity for personal cooling. This bilayer design controls fast moisture transfer from inside out and provides thermal management, demonstrating high impact not only for garments, but also for other systems requiring heat regulation, such as buildings, which could mitigate energy demand and ultimately contribute to the relief of global energy and climate issues.

Abstract:We present IntelliTex, a low-cost and highly accessible double-coating fabrication method for washable and reusable functional textiles with customized input functionalities. Specifcally, of-the-shelf textiles are firstly coated with conductive carbon black using pen ink, which endows textiles with rich sensing capabilities, such as pressure, stretch, slide, and temperature. Secondly, textiles are coated with polyurethane to enhance the sensing stability over wash cycles for good reusability. To support user customization, we enrich the design space of double-coating by exploring various coating methods and diverse textiles to be coated. We further contribute a comprehensive library of input components and an online document to make our approach accessible to novice users. Finally, five application examples and a user study showcase the versatile functionalities and user accessibility of our method, with which we hope to support designers, makers, and researchers to easily create functional textiles ready to use in everyday life.

Abstract:In recent years, domestic and foreign research on smart fibers and smart textiles has achieved many results, and has been increasingly widely used in the textile field. This article introduces the functions of smart fibers and the main seven types of smart fibers, as well as a brief description of shape memory textiles, color-changing textiles, smart temperature control textiles, waterproof and moisture-permeable textiles, self-cleaning textiles, and electronic information smart textiles. At present, smart fibers and smart textiles are mainly used in the fields of medical health care, military protection, entertainment sports, and clothing consumption. At the same time, their prospects and markets are pointed out. Smart fibers and smart textiles have unlimited development potential and prospects.

Abstract:A multi‐functional protective textile composed of PTFE/CNT porous fibers, demonstrating excellent mechanical strength, high porosity, significant electrical conductivity, and flexibility. The textile offers robust protection against electromagnetic interference, UV radiation, chemicals, and static electricity. Additionally, it exhibits efficient electro/photo thermal conversion and intelligent sensing capabilities, making it ideal for advanced protective clothing applications. Industrialization and human activities have introduced numerous hazards, including exposure to harsh chemicals, radiation, static electricity, and fire risks, particularly in high‐risk sectors such as engineering, rescue operations, military, and aerospace. This study presents a multi‐functional protective textile developed from a conductive fiber composed of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and carbon nanotubes (CNT), crucial for ensuring personal safety. The conductive fiber demonstrates remarkable strength (17.3 MPa), high porosity (76%), and significant electrical conductivity (185 S m−1), coupled with excellent fineness and flexibility due to its dual‐nanofibrous structure. The resulting textile exhibits exceptional hydrophobicity, chemical resistance, and high electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (29 dB in the X‐band), alongside a superior UV protective factor (>3000) and anti‐static properties. Notably, it possesses outstanding electro/photo thermal conversion capabilities, enabling consistent heat generation for personal warmth. Additionally, the textile responds electrically to deformation and temperature changes, facilitating intelligent applications such as motion and temperature monitoring and fire alerts. This work offers a novel strategy for fabricating PTFE‐based composite fibers with porous microstructures and high electrical conductivity, setting a new standard for next‐generation protective clothing with advanced functionalities.

Abstract:Benefiting from inherent lightweight, flexibility, and good adaptability to human body, functional textiles are attracting tremendous attention to cope with wearable issues in sustainable applications around human beings. In this feature article, a comprehensive and thoughtful review is proposed regarding research activities of functional textiles with smart properties. Specifically, a brief exposition of highlighting the significance and rising demands of novel textiles throughout the human society is begun. Next, a systematic review is provided about the fabrication of functional textiles from 1D spinning, 2D modification, and 3D construction, their diverse functionality as well as sustainable applications, showing a clear picture of evolved textiles to the readers. How to engineer the compositions, structures, and properties of functional textiles is elaborated to achieve different smart properties. All these tunable, upgraded, and versatile properties make the developed textiles well suited for extensive applications ranging from environmental monitoring or freshwater access to personal protection and wearable power supply. Finally, a simple summary and critical analysis is drawn, with emphasis on the insight into remaining challenges and future directions. With worldwide efforts, advance and breakthrough in textile functionalization expounded in this review will promote the revolution of smart textiles for intelligence era. This review presents a comprehensive and systematic interpretation of functional textiles with smart properties, from the materials to the fabrication to the sustainable applications, aiming at finding ever‐advancing functional textiles with tunable, upgraded, and versatile properties well‐suited for a broad spectrum of applications.

Thermally Responsive Fibers for Versatile Thermoactivated Protective Fabrics

Abstract:A smart fiber with a skin‐core structure that actively or passively changes its mechanical properties is designed and fabricated. The novel synergy of hydrophobic interactions and ionic bonds endows smart fibers with good settability, thermal insulation, and load‐bearing property. Meter‐level fabrication of smart fibers and the generality of this method are thoroughly demonstrated. This smart fiber shows unique applications in resisting external shocks and thermal burns. Smart textiles with good mechanical adaptability play an important role in personal protection, health monitoring, and aerospace applications. However, most of the reported thermally responsive polymers has long response time and poor processability, comfort, and wearability. Skin‐core structures of thermally responsive fibers with multiple commercial fiber cores and temperature‐responsive hydrogel skins are designed and fabricated, which exhibit rapid mechanical adaptability, good thermohardening, and thermal insulation. This universal method enables tight bonding between various commercial fiber cores and hydrogel skins via specific covalently anchored networks. At room temperature, prepared fibers show softness, flexibility, and skin compatibility similar to those of ordinary fibers. As temperature rises, smart fibers become hard, rigid, and self‐supporting. The modulus of hydrogel skin increases from 304% to 30883%, showing good mechanoadaptability and impact resistance owing to the synergy between hydrophobic interactions and ionic bonding. Moreover, this synergistic effect leads to an increase in heat absorption, and fibers exhibit good thermal insulation, which reduces the contact temperature of the body surface by ≈25 °C under the external temperature of 95 °C, effectively preventing thermal burns. Notably, the active mechanoadaptability of these smart fibers using conductive fibers as cores is demonstrated. This study provides feasibility for fabricating environmentally adaptive intelligent textiles.

Abstract:This work proposed a strategy to seamlessly integrate the essential functions of multiple sensory, heat regulation, and impact protection into a thin, soft, lightweight, non‐woven textile for smart sportswear via facile coaxial electrospinning technology. Smart textiles with a high level of personal protection, health monitoring, physical comfort, and wearing durability are highly demanded in clothing for harsh application scenarios, such as modern sportswear. However, seamlessly integrating such a smart clothing system has been a long‐sought but challenging goal. Herein, based on coaxial electrospinning techniques, a smart non‐woven textile (Smart‐NT) integrated with high impact resistance is developed, multisensory functions, and radiative cooling effects. This Smart‐NT is comprised of core‐shell nanofibers with an ionic conductive polymer sheath and an impact‐stiffening polymer core. The soft smart textile, with a thickness of only 800 μm, can attenuate over 60% of impact force, sense pressure stimulus with sensitivity up to 201.5 kPa−1, achieve temperature sensing resolution of 0.1 °C, and reduce skin temperature by ≈17 °C under a solar intensity of 1 kW m−2. In addition, the stretchable Smart‐NT is highly durable and robust, retaining its multifunction features over 10 000 bending and multiple washing cycles. Finally, application scenarios are demonstrated for real‐time health monitoring, body protection, and physical comfort of smart sportswear based on Smart‐NT for outdoor sports. The strategy opens a new avenue for seamless integration of smart clothing systems.

Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. Personal protective textiles (PPTs) protect humans from sharp objects. However, PPTs are designed primarily for protective performance, and their stiff material and single function make them unsuitable for long-term wear. In this study, we developed flexible protective textiles using advanced flat knitting technology. These textiles offer excellent cut resistance, good abrasion resistance, high flexibility, and warmth-retention properties. A flexible protective fabric (FPF) with knitted structure was designed with an outer layer that provides cut and abrasion resistance, an intermediate layer, and an inner layer for heat storage. The study examined the cut resistance, abrasion resistance, flexibility, thermal management, breathability and stability of the developed fabrics. FPF has excellent abrasion and cut resistance. The cut resistance of the fabric was tested in three directions. The warp cutting load was 2145 gf, while the weft cutting load was 2347 gf. The diagonal cutting load was the largest at 2364 gf, resulting in an A5 cutting grade for high cutting hazards. Compared with other protective fabrics available on the market, FPF stands out due to its softness and the smallest bending stiffness in both the warp and weft directions. Additionally, it has excellent thermal management performance and breathability, providing 53% insulation and 146 mm/s breathability. Stability tests have shown that FPF has excellent color fastness to perspiration, good cleaning stability and aging stability for cut resistance, flexibility, warmth-retention properties and breathability.

Abstract:Textile-based wearable devices have attracted increasing attention because of their softness, breathability, and biocompatibility, which makes them durable and wearable for long-term application. To date, the fabrication of multifunctional wearable electronic textiles (E-textiles) that integrate sensing and heating properties via an energy-saving method remains a great challenge. Herein, we have proposed a multifunctional integration strategy using integrated nanowire-coated fabrics that can deliver pressure sensing capabilities simultaneously with thermal insulation, Joule heating, and particulate matter (PM) filter features. The collective effect of the fiber/yarn/fabric multi-scale contacts produces a highly sensitive multifunctional [-textile, with a sensitivity of approximately 3.24 x 10(5) kPa(-1) at 0-10 kPa and 2.16 x 10(4) kPa(-1) at 10-100 kPa, respectively. Each layer contained a conductive network of metallic nanowires (NWs) that could reflect the infrared radiation (IR) emitted by the human body and synergistically enhance the thermal insulation property of the multifunctional [-textile, thus enabling a 5 degrees C decrease in the setpoint as compared to the normal cotton textile. In addition to passively insulating heat loss, the [-textile can also function as a wearable heater, inducing fast thermal response and uniform electroheating. Furthermore, it can act as a high-efficiency air filter for high-temperature PM2.5 particle removal. The outstanding integrated property is expected to be applicable in the fields of smart clothes, human monitoring and healthcare, air filtration, and lightweight body armor in extreme climate conditions.

Abstract:AbstractThermal protective textiles are crucial for safeguarding individuals, particularly firefighters and steelworkers, against extreme heat, and for preventing burn injuries. However, traditional firefighting gear suffers from statically fixed thermal insulation properties, potentially resulting in overheating and discomfort in moderate conditions, and insufficient protection in extreme fire events. Herein, an innovative soft robotic textile is developed for dynamically adaptive thermal management, providing superior personal protection and thermal comfort across a spectrum of environmental temperatures. This unique textile features a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)‐sealed actuation system, embedded with a low boiling point fluid for reversible phase transition, resembling an endoskeleton that triggers an expansion within the textile matrix for enhanced air gap and thermal insulation. The thermal resistance improves automatically from 0.23 to 0.48 Km2 W−1 by self‐actuating under intense heat, exceeding conventional textiles by maintaining over 10 °C cooler temperatures. Additionally, the knitted substrate incorporated into the soft actuators can substantially mitigate convective heat transfer, as evidenced by the thermal resistance tests and the temperature mapping derived from numerical simulations. Moreover, it boasts significantly increased moisture permeability. The thermoadaptation and breathability of this durable all‐fabric system signify considerable progress in the development of protective clothing with high comfort for dynamic and extreme temperature conditions.

Abstract:Fabrics are soft against the skin, flexible, easily accessible and able to wick away perspiration, to some extent for local private thermal management. In this review, we classify smart fabrics as passive thermal management fabrics and active thermal management fabrics based on the availability of outside energy consumption in the manipulation of heat generation and dissipation from the human body. The mechanism and research status of various thermal management fabrics are introduced in detail, and the article also analyses the advantages and disadvantages of various smart thermal management fabrics, achieving a better and more comprehensive comprehension of the current state of research on smart thermal management fabrics, which is quite an important reference guide for our future research. In addition, with the progress of science and technology, the social demand for fabrics has shifted from keeping warm to improving health and quality of life. E-textiles have potential value in areas such as remote health monitoring and life signal detection. New e-textiles are designed to mimic the skin, sense biological data and transmit information. At the same time, the ultra-moisturizing properties of the fabric's thermal management allow for applications beyond just the human body to energy. E-textiles hold great promise for energy harvesting and storage. The article also introduces the application of smart fabrics in life forms and energy harvesting. By combining electronic technology with textiles, e-textiles can be manufactured to promote human well-being and quality of life. Although smart textiles are equipped with more intelligent features, wearing comfort must be the first thing to be ensured in the multi-directional application of textiles. Eventually, we discuss the dares and prospects of smart thermal management fabric research.

Abstract:Green, multifunctional protective fabrics have evoked enormous research enthusiasm because of the progress in public safety. Herein, inspired by the self-protection ability of natural creature, multifunctional protective cotton fabric (TP-Cotton) was prepared through layer-by-layer self-assembly of tannic acid (TA) and phytic acid (PA) from biomass. Due to the synergistic effect of TA as an antioxidant and PA as a fire retardant, the modified cotton fabric displays excellent fireproofing, antimicrobial activity, and UV-resistance. The limiting oxygen index of TP-Cotton reaches 39.4%, and the peak value of heat release rate (pHRR) reduces by 80.04% compared with Cotton. Moreover, the antibacterial rates of TP-Cotton against S. aureus and E. coli reaches 99.98 and 100.00%, respectively. Meanwhile, the ultraviolet protection factor value is over 40 due to the integration of TA, which is rich in phenolic hydroxyl groups. Therefore, benefiting from this unique composition and the simple preparation strategy, the as-prepared cotton fabrics showed highly multiple protection capabilities, having promising applications as protective clothing, military uniform, and overalls for emergency services.

Abstract:Intelligent fibre is a kind of fibre that integrates sensing and information processing. It is similar to biological materialsand has intelligent functions such as self-perception, self-adaptation, self-diagnosis, and self-repair. Intelligent textilesrefer to textiles that have sensing and responding functions to the environment. Intelligent fibres and their textiles notonly have the ability to perceive and respond to external stimuli but also have the ability to adapt to the externalenvironment. In recent years, the research on intelligent fibres has achieved many results in the world, and it is widelyused in textiles and clothing industry. Therefore, this paper summarized the research status of intelligent fibre andintelligent textile worldwide, and put forward the research direction in the future. This paper introduced the propertiesand research status of five kinds of main intelligent fibres, including phase change fibre, shape memory fibre, smarthydrogel fibre, optical fibre and electronic intelligent fibre, and summarized their application in textiles. Abstract:Recently, smart wearable devices with anti-impact property and intelligent monitoring function have attracted more and more attention. Herein, hollow silicone rubber tube, shear thickening fluid (STF), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating were used to prepare a kind of multi-functional intelligent yarn (C-STF-based yarn) with excellent energy dissipation performance. Due to the unique rheological properties of STF, the dissipated energy of the yarn during the compression process increased with the enhancement of shear thickening effect of STF. The mechanism was discussed by numerical simulation. In addition, as a flexible fiber sensor, it could respond to a variety of mechanical stimuli, such as stretching, compression, and bending. Moreover, smart fabric woven by C-STF-based yarns had excellent impact resistance and impact monitoring function. Meanwhile, the smart fabric could also sense various joint movements of the human body, such as walking, running, and jumping. Therefore, this study provided a feasible method for the construction of multi-functional intelligent fabric, which had broad application prospects in human safe-guarding and real-time mo-tion monitoring.

Abstract:Journal of Thermoplastic Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. In recent years, with the popularity of firearms and ammunition, body armor materials have undergone a great development. Body armor is commonly used to provide protection against ballistic threats, and its use has increased as people become increasingly aware of protecting their own lives. Compared with the traditional body armor materials, fabrics made of high-performance fibers are not only lightweight and convenient, but also process good protective performance. The purpose of this study is to obtain textiles with higher puncture resistance, by reviewing the progress of rapidly changing and advancing field of high-performance textiles with puncture resistance, which is introduced into four methods: shear thickening fluids (STFs), coating and impregnation, composition and structural optimization, respectively. The content of the manuscript provides a comprehensive perspective for new researchers in relevant fields for subsequent design of protective clothing.

Abstract:Smart textiles with high sensitivity and rapid response for various external stimuli have gained tremendous attentions in human healthcare monitoring, personal heat management, and wearable electronics. However, the current smart textiles only acquire desired signal passively, regularly lacking subsequent on-demand therapy actively. Herein, a robust, breathable, and flexible smart textiles as multi-function sensor and wearable heater for human health monitoring and gentle thermotherapy in real time is constructed. The composite fiber as strain sensor (CFY@PU) was fabricated via warping carbon fiber yarns (CFY) onto polyurethane fibers (PU), which endowed composite fiber with high conductivity, excellent sensitivity (GF = 76.2), and fantastic dynamic durability (7500 cycles) in strain sensing. In addition, CFY@PU can detect various degrees of human movements such as elbow bending, swallowing and pulse, which can provide effective information for disease diagnosis. More surprisingly, weaving CFY@PU into a fabric can assemble highly sensitive pressure sensor for remote communication and information encryption. Warping CFY onto Kevlar would obtain temperature-sensitive composite fiber (CFY@Kevlar) as temperature sensor and wearable heater for on-demand thermotherapy, which provided unique opportunities in designing smart textiles with ultrahigh sensitivity, rapid response, and great dynamic durability.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Protective clothing should provide comfort for wearers over a wide range of temperatures and adequate protection for body in some harsh environments. In the present work, we prepare lightweight ceramic fibrous mat based on electrospun SiO 2 -TiO 2 composite fiber and a barrier between human body and extreme environments can be designed based on the fabric. The non-woven mat with a density of 0.045 g/cm 3 exhibits high flexibility and toughness, excellent compressibility with good reproducibility over 1000 cycles, and significantly low thermal conductivity of 0.044 W/m·K at room temperature. The addition of TiO 2 reduces the thermal conductivity and improves the infrared reflection ability of the ceramic hybrid fibrous mat. At the same time, the fiber morphology in the mat can maintain at a high temperature, which expands the application of thermal protective clothing in different environment.
