Abstract:The advantages of permanent magnet synchronous motor make it reach the requirements of energy saving and environmental protection in railway traction.As the PM motor technology is becoming mature,the PM motor is sure to be widely used in railway traction system in future.This article proposed a permanent magnet synchronous motor which has a new type of rotor structure.And then,set up static simulation system of the PM motor based on Ansyis,and dynamic simulation system based on Magnet.At last,got the dynamic and static characteristics of the PM motor in the method of finite element analysis.The article is meaningful for optimization of PM motors.The result established the theoretical foundation for designing and optimizing relative products.
Comparison of PMSMs with Different Rotor Structures for EV Application

Abstract:For electric vehicles (EVs), permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are competitive owing to their high power factor, high efficiency and high power density. In this paper, four types of PMSMs with different rotor topologies are designed with the same motor main dimensions and the same amount of permanent magnet usage. First, the different PMSMs are compared in terms of their torque characteristics. The torque characteristic curves of the four motors are displayed with the control method i(d)=0 for surface-mounted PMSM (SPMSM) and Maximum Torque per Ampere (MTPA) for interior PMSM (IPMSM). It turns out that IPMSM has higher starting torque than SPMSM due to the reluctance torque. Among the three IPMSMs with different rotor structures, V-shape IPMSM and delta-shape IPMSM can provide higher output torque under the same current supply with the higher salient rate. More information on the no-load magnetic density, torque ripple, efficiency and demagnetization problem operated at the peak current is also provided and compared. Then the four PMSMs with the same peak current are further analyzed and compared on the flux-weakening speed-enlarge (FWSE) capability. The results show good FWSE capability for all of the four PMSMs owing to the large peak current. However, the torque of SPMSM in flux-weakening control region is slightly higher than the IPMSMs.

Abstract:Electric vehicle is a good solution to energy crisis and environment pollution. More specifically, low speed electric vehicle, whose speed is often lower than 50 km/h, is widely used for short-distance transportation in suburban areas. As the key part of electric vehicle, motor assumes an important position in the performance of the vehicle. To discuss the motor adequate for low speed application, two typical motors, which includes a brushless DC motor (BLDCM) and a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), were selected and compared in this article by both experimental and finite element analysis methods.

Abstract:Direct-drive in-wheel motors have become an extremely attractive option for electric vehicles. Two kinds of motors are devised, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) and Permanent-Magnet Flux-Modulated Motor (PMFM), respectively. Keeping the same back EMF, current density and copper loss, this paper analyzes and compares torque density, torque ripple, flux-weakening performance, speed range, loss and efficiency of the motors. The results indicate that compared to PMSM, PMFM has higher torque density, lower material cost and wider speed range, but with the penalty of lower efficiency, lower power factor and higher iron loss.

Abstract:Considering the higher harmonic distortion and higher torque ripple caused by traditional PWM strategy when applied to electric vehicles,a permanent magnet synchronous motor system based on space vector pulse width modulation strategy for electric vehicle application was designed.The principle of space vector pulse-width modulation is described in detail,and the vector control system for PMSM was set up in MATLAB/Simulink.The id=0 control strategy was used,and the system dynamic response was simulated.Digital signal processor (DSP) TMS320F28335 of TI company was used as the main control chip to set up the experimental platform.The system status and efficiency below the base speed was studied in experiments.The simulation results and the experimental results show a good consistency.It provides practical value to PMSM system design and analysis.

Abstract:It is predicted that the maximum speed of EV traction motors will increase in the future due to reductions in size and weight. The high-speed motors are required to have high mechanical strength of the rotor for high-speed rotation, in addition to satisfying the required output and high efficiency in the wide operation area. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of motors in terms of both electrical and mechanical points of view. In this research, three motor types, PMSM, SRM, and IM, which targeted the output power of 85 kW and the maximum speed of 52,000 min−1, are designed for use with EV traction motors, and the study clarifies which the type of motor is most suitable for application in high-speed motors of EVs in terms of their mechanical and electrical characteristics.

Abstract:This paper proposes the intrinsic coefficient of power factor in permanent magnet vernier motors (PMVMs) influenced by slot-pole combinations for in-wheel direct drive application. To start with, the theoretical expression of power factor under typical conditions is derived, and the dominant influencing coefficients are extracted. Secondly, each inductance component is calculated theoretically, eg. air-gap main inductance, slot leakage inductance, etc. Based on previous derivation, the intrinsic coefficient of power factor is extracted, which represents the high-power-factor ability and be utilized in the initial machine design. It is influenced by the armature poles, armature magnetomotive force (MMF) harmonic spectra, winding factor, and air-gap permeance. Moreover, the slot-pole combinations with various high-power-factor ability are illustrated, in which, the ones with coil-pitch of two-slot pitches overwhelm. In order to validate the theoretical analysis, several PMVM model candidates with various slot-pole combinations are selected and simulated by finite-element-analysis (FEA). Finally, the prototype of PMVM with 28p18s and benchmark PMSM with 28p24s were manufactured and tested for experimental validation. Overall, this paper aims to provide a guideline to select the slot-pole combinations with high-power-factor ability, particularly in PMVM, for in-wheel direct drive.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive study on the fractional slot concentrated winding (FSCW) interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) with different pole slot combination for the application of electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). Three motors with the same dimension constraint and rated parameters are designed and optimized. With the optimized motors, winding factors and magnetomotive force (MMF), inductances, torque capacity, constant power speed range (CPSR), the losses, the efficiency, demagnetization capability and vibration are investigated and compared. The comparison results show that 12/8 motor and 12/10 motor have their respective unique advantages while 12/14 motor is not as good as the others.

Abstract:Testing of multiphase high power permanent magnet synchronous motor having multiple units in the laboratory always introduces many problems. In this paper, prediction problems to obtain the overall characteristics for such motor under limited experimental conditions have been analyzed. On the basis of power characteristic analysis and calculation of one independent unit, the calculation of power characteristics for multiunit as well as the prediction of overall power characteristics were realized. Finally, some valuable conclusions resulting from the analysis are provided.

Abstract:In this paper, the road test of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) has been experimentally investigated when using various driving modes, the motor performance has been demonstrated through comparing the smooth driving mode and the rapid driving mode, which including the related parameters such as speed, torque, current and temperature. The results show that, the actual current of motor is relatively stable using the smooth driving mode, meanwhile, the temperature of winding coils and inverter was lower than those of the rapid driving mode. Through comparing, the motor performance has been relatively stable using the smooth driving mode.

Abstract:With the development of the transportation electrification, the demand for high-performance motor is growing rapidly. High torque density and wide constant power operating range are two key requirements of the electric vehicle (EV) traction applications. Considering the limited voltage and current, a successful EV traction machine should realize good linearity of torquecurrent characteristic and a proper characteristic current. In order to meet these strict demands, an optimized Fractional-Slot Concentrated-Winding(FSCW) permanent magnet (PM) machine with different rotor structures is proposed in this article based on the traditional spoke-type PM machine topology. The machine structures are introduced and optimized in the design procedure, and a magnetic equivalent circuit model is applied to illustrate its principle. The electromagnetic performances, including back electromotive force, output torque, and efficiency map, are compared between the original and optimized design to highlight the performance improvement of the optimized topology. Finally, a prototype machine has been built for the experimental validation. The experimental results, which agree well with the Finite Element (FE)-predicted results, confirm the validity of the analysis method used in predictions and the advantages of the optimized design.

Abstract:Nowadays, in-wheel drive mode is considered as one of the most promising modes for electric vehicles (EVs). The motor type plays a significant role in the vehicle performances. This article focuses on the performance between permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and permanent magnet Vernier motor (PMVM) for in-wheel direct drive. First, the required performances are determined by the vehicle requirements. The prototypes of PMVM and PMSM are manufactured after the comparison. Then, the expressions of air-gap magnetic field harmonic, electromagnetic torque, and power factor are theoretically derived, where the parameter torque ratio is introduced to evaluate the torque ratio between PMVM and PMSM. Based on experiment, the back-electromotive force harmonics, cogging torque, maximum torque per ampere capability, flux-weakening capability, torque, efficiency, and power factor are compared and analyzed. Subsequently, the discussions are carried out, where the strength and weakness of two-type motors for in-wheel drive are concluded and the future prospects are suggested. Finally, the conclusions of two-type in-wheel motors are then extracted. This article aims at providing a reference for the exploration of alternating in-wheel motor types, which can promote the development of high-performance in-wheel drive system for EVs.

Abstract:Now days, it is vital to use electric vehicles (EVs) instead of traditional cars with internal combustion engines (ICEs) in order to reduce the high level of pollution in the environment, and many researchers are investigating the possible improvements on these vehicles. The main component of EVs is the electric motor and the selection of a motor with high efficiency, excellent dynamic response and high starting torque has a strong effect on the performance of EVs. In addition to that a reasonable price for the electric motor is required. This work focuses on the selection of the most suitable electric motor for EVs. Therefore a detailed study to compare between the performance of the major types of electric motors that are used in EVs is addressed in this paper. The results of this comparative study is tabulated and by careful consideration for all these results, the appropriate electric motor for EVs has been chosen. From the other hand, the artificial intelligent (AI) techniques play a crucial role in the EVs technologies, and several kinds of AI techniques used in EVs applications are overviewed in this work.

Abstract:The key design parameters-permanent magnet width, stator winding turns and the rotor shape are analyzed that influence the torque performance of the permanent magnet synchronous motor. Take the sample motor for example, it is analyzed that the influence of the stator winding turns, permanent magnet width and the rotor shape on the torque performance. It is proved by the analysis result that the torque ripple is lowest when the permanent magnet width equals the integer times of the stator circular pitch and the torque performance can be improved by the asymmetric arc optimizing of the rotor shape. The correctness of the theoretic analysis is validated by experiment.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of reliability reduction caused by brushes in electrical variable transmission (EVT), a new structure permanent magnet induction cascaded brushless dual rotor machine (PMI-CBDRM) is proposed, which is used to replace the dual rotor machine in EVT. Firstly, this paper will introduce the structure and principle of PMI-CBDRM. The cascading asynchronous torque characteristic of PMI-CDRBM is analyzed by the equivalent circuit method. Compared with the finite element calculation results, the coincidence of results are good, and the correctness of the calculation model is verified. Moreover, the full-speed domain torque characteristics are analyzed, such as the cascaded asynchronous torque, doubly-fed synchronous torque, transient torque, etc. Finally, the feasibility of PMI-CBDRM in the dual-mechanical port contactless torque transmission and speed regulation system is discussed.

Abstract:The interest in electric traction has reached a very high level in recent decades; there is no doubt that electric vehicles have become among the main means of transport and will be the first choice in the future, but to dominate the market, a lot of research efforts are still devoted to this purpose. Electric machines are crucial components of electric vehicle powertrains. The bulk of traction drive systems have converged in recent years toward having some sort of permanent magnet machines because there is a growing trend toward enhancing the power density and efficiency of traction machines, resulting in unique designs and refinements to fundamental machine topologies, as well as the introduction of new machine classes. This paper presents the technological aspect of the different components of the electric powertrain and highlights the important information on the electric vehicle’s architecture. It focuses on a multi-criteria comparison of different electric motors utilized in the electric traction system to give a clear vision to allow choosing the adequate electrical motor for the desired application. The proposed comparative analysis shows that the induction motor better meets the major necessities of the electric powertrain, whereas the permanent magnet synchronous motor is nonetheless the most used by electric vehicle manufacturers.

Abstract:The design principle of electric motors and drive systems for electric vehicles (EVs) is presented. Firstly, according to the EV demands on electric drive systems, the article discusses their effects on the vehicle performances covering acceleration, driving range and so on. Then it presents the design outline based on the experiences of four different EVs. Furthermore, some important design parameters of electric motors are listed and expatriated respectively, more design details are given. To minimise the effect of different driving cycles, a combined reference cycle, incorporating Japan 10.15 mode, US06 and UDDS, is derived for optimization. By employing the dynamic model and performing MATLAB simulation, the research work analyses the function of driving cycle, grade ability, and acceleration on EV electric motor parameters on the plots of torque-speed, and provides the detailed design process and method on how to decide the rated and maximum torque and power parameters. At last, the article presents some considerations for designing drive and control systems, such as control method and strategy, hardware and software EMC design. The conclusion is reached using a design flow chart of the whole design procedure.

Abstract:Micro brushed and brushless motors of the size typically used on micro-ground vehicles and micro-air vehicles have been found to have very low efficiencies. This lack of efficiency not only stems from low manufacturing tolerances, but is also because motors at these scales are generally operated over a large range of loading conditions causing them to operate off design point. This technical report: (1) provides a basis for a simple motor analysis, comparing analysis with actual motor test data, (2) examines the efficiencies of many of the off-the-shelf brushed and brushless motors used in micro vehicle applications, and (3) provides a methodology for proper motor selection, emphasizing the importance in ensuring motor loading conditions are matched to the motor design in order to maximize power efficiency.
