Abstract:Nickel layered double hydroxide, Ni(OH) 2 , has been widely used as the cathode for nickel based battery systems. However, the currently commercialized β -Ni(OH) 2 is limited by its low capacity. In contrast, α -Ni(OH) 2 can give higher capacity, but it is challenging to stabilize in alkaline solution due to the conversion to β -Ni(OH) 2 . Herein, we use zinc doped Ni(OH) 2 and control its spherical morphology to strengthen the stability of α -Ni(OH) 2 in a nickel metal hydride battery system. With an optimal zinc doping content of 3 mol% for the spherical α -Ni(OH) 2 (Ni-Zn3), the cathode shows the highest discharge capacity of 351.3 mAh g –1 at a current density of 70 mA g –1 (0.2 C) and superior rate performance, which even delivers 271.5 mAh g –1 at 5 C. More importantly, the durability of the Ni-Zn3 cathode is significantly enhanced, which maintains 81.7% after cycling 360 times, almost twice as long as that of pure α -Ni(OH) 2 . Studies show that the stabilized Ni–O bond and suitable aperture structure are mainly responsible for the advanced electrochemical properties of the Ni-Zn3. The results show that proper zinc doping spherical α -Ni(OH) 2 with low-cost and high performance is an promising cathode material for nickel-based battery systems.

Abstract:Spherical β Ni 0.8 Co 0.2 (OH) 2 powders were prepared using a “controlled crystallization” method. The spherical LiNi 0.8 Co 0.2 O 2 powders were synthesized by sintering the β Ni 0.8 Co 0.2 (OH) 2 precursor and LiOH·H 2O in oxygen at 750℃ for 8h. The β Ni 0.8 Co 0.2 (OH) 2 and LiNi 0.8 Co 0.2 O 2 structures were characterized by XRD and SEM. Electrochemical tests of the charge discharge process show that the spherical LiNi 0.8 Co 0.2 O 2 cathode material has excellent electrochemical performance. The cathode material had a high initial charge capacity of 217mA·h·g -1 and a discharge capacity of 172 mA·h·g -1 with retention of more than 97.5% after 50 cycles. The material tap density is about 2.8g·cm -3 , which is remarkably higher than the non spherical LiNi 0.8 Co 0.2 O 2 powders. The high density spherical LiNi 0.8 Co 0.2 O 2 cathode material can be used in lithium secondary batteries to greatly increase the batteries' energy density.

Abstract:The preparation methods of nano-phase nickel hydroxide and its preliminary applications as active materials for positive electrode reported home and abroad in recent years were introduced. Some important and influential factors on the application of nano-nickel hydroxide, including mixing ratio, types of additives, technology during the process of preparing nickel electrode, were also discussed in the paper. On the study of nano-phase Ni(OH)2 electrode, the most important problem to be resolved is the electrochemical mechanism on the electrode. The aspects of future research on nano-phase Ni(OH)2 electrode were put forward, too.
Ultrasound-induced elevation of interlayer spacing and conductivity of CoNi hydroxides for high-performance Ni-Zn batteries

Abstract:Nickel-zinc (Ni-Zn) batteries hold a lot of promise for energy storage thanks to their high output volt-age, plentiful Zn supply, and low toxicity. Achieving the facile preparation of high-performance cathodes at ambient temperature remains a challenge, it is however essential for practical applications. Here, in the present study, an efficient ultrasound-assisted one-step fabrication of CoNi double hydroxide (UA-CoNi DH) microspheres at room temperature that performs well as a cathode for Ni-Zn batteries was proposed. This designed ultrasound-assisted method induces the formation of metal double hydroxide with an elevation of interlayer spacing and bulk conductivity while maintaining the structure features of CoNi DH prepared without ultrasound assistance. As a result, the UA-CoNi DH as an electrode mate-rial displays highly enhanced electrochemical properties relative to CoNi DH prepared without ultrasound assistance. Benefitting from the improved performance of our UA-CoNi DH electrode, the Ni-Zn battery with UA-CoNi DH as the cathode (UA-CoNi DH//Zn) delivers a good specific capacity (202.36 mAh/g) and rate performance (70.49% capacity maintained at a 10-fold higher current), presenting more than 71.61% and 21.99% improvement relative to the CoNi DH//Zn battery, respectively. This work offers guidelines for constructing high-performance Ni-Zn battery cathodes in an open environment. Abstract:Research on alloy-type anode materials with micro/submicrospherical morphology is of great significance for the development of high energy-density Li-ion batteries. A facile and cost-effective route is adopted to prepare homogeneous submicrospherical and porous Bi2S3@nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) nanocomposites, which exhibit considerably better Li-storage performance than pure Bi2S3 and Bi2O3 submicrospheres. Analyses on the electrochemical behavior and morphology of the electrode show that the good performance of Bi2S3@NC can be correlated with its stable submicrospherical structure and decreased charge-transfer resistance, for which the NC coating layer and porous interior of Bi2S3 are supposed to be the two main contributors. The submicrospherical structure and facile synthesis of Bi2S3@NC will be very suitable for practical electrode fabrication technology of Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Recently the ulitization of Ni/MH batteries has been plagued by low capacity and high cost as the energy storage market flourishs, where the low capacity of commercialized β-Ni(OH)2 cathode material has been one of the challenging issues. Herein, to overcome the problem, we propose to prepare low-cost and high-capacity spherical α-Ni(OH)2 with NiS nanosheets shell serving as an efficient conductive network to improve the proton diffusion and conductivity via a process-easy strategy and use it as the cathode of Ni/MH batteries. As a result, the obtained NiS-coated α-Ni(OH)2 (S-Ni-4) electrode delivers a capacity as high as 369.9 mAh g–1 at 0.2C, and maintains 329.2 mAh g–1 with a retention rate of 89.0% after 200 cycles at 1C, 12.5% higher than that of pure α-Ni(OH)2. Notably, in contrast to the poor rate discharge abiliy of the pure α-Ni(OH)2, which is only 93.6 mAh g–1 at 5C, the discharge capacity of S-Ni-4 electrode gives as high as 254 mAh g–1. The work shes a light on the advancing cobalt-free cathodes with high-performance for large-scale energy storage applications of the Ni/MH batteries.

Abstract:Spherical NiO-C composite was prepared by dispersing spherical NiO in glucose solution and subsequent carbonization under hydrothermal conditions at 180°C. The microstructure and morphology of the NiO-C and NiO powders were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrochemical properties of the electrodes were measured by galvanostatic charge–discharge tests, cyclic voltammetric analysis (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). SEM images showed that the amorphous carbon not only coated on the surface but also filled the inner pores of the NiO spheres. Electrochemical tests showed that the NiO-C composite exhibited higher initial coulombic efficiency (66.6%) than NiO (56.4%), and better cycling performances. The improvement of these properties is attributed to the carbon, as it can reduce the specific surface area of porous sphere, and enhance the conductivity of porous NiO.

Abstract:Cobalt/ytterbium hydroxide was used for surface coating of spherical to improve its high-temperature performance. The coated spherical was prepared by coprecipitation of hydroxide on the surface of spherical . The optimum coating content of ytterbium was around 0.75% (atomic concentration) to obtain high discharge capacity at both 25 and . The scanning electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that the coating layer uniformly covered the surface of spherical . The cyclic voltammetry analysis of spherical showed that the oxidation potential, the oxygen evolution potential, and the difference between them increased after the coating both at room temperature and . This increase was much bigger at . The high-temperature performances of sealed AA-sized Ni–MH batteries using hydroxide-coated spherical were much better than those using uncoated or only -coated spherical electrodes. The capacity retention for 2% Co/0.75% Yb hydroxide-coated spherical reached 90% at , where the capacity retentions for uncoated and only -coated were only 46 and 48%, respectively. It has shown that the hydroxide coating is an effective way to improve the high-temperature performance of spherical for nickel–metal hydride batteries.

Abstract:Spherical β-Ni(OH)2 was used as an active material of pasted positive electrode in a Ni-MH battery. To improve the performance of the positive electrode, the spherical β-Ni(OH)2 particles (mean diameter 15 μm) were modified with electroless cobalt coating. Electrochemical properties such as discharge capacity and high-rate dischargeability of the positive electrode were generally improved by surface modification. Cyclic voltammetric studies indicated that due to the presence of cobalt coating on the surface of Ni(OH)2 particles, the electrode exhibited a better reversibility of Ni(OH)2NiOOH redox reaction and the higher oxygen evolution overpotential. This apparently would increase the charge efficiency, improve utilization of active material and minimize concurrent oxygen evolution.

Layered Niobium Oxide Hydrate Anode with Excellent Performance for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Benefiting from the advantages of cost-effectiveness and sustainability, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are recognized as a next-generation energy technology with great development potential. Herein, niobium oxide hydrate (H3ONb3O8) synthesized by a facile and inexpensive solvothermal method is proposed as the anode of LIBs. It is a layered two-dimensional material composed of negatively charged two-dimensional lamellae and positively charged interlayer hydronium ions. The former consist of NbO6 octahedral units connected by bridging oxygen. Because of the mutual effect of hydronium ions and niobium oxide quantum dots, niobium oxide hydrate exhibits excellent electrochemical activity when used as an anode material. This compound is first applied to lithium-ion batteries, obtaining a high specific capacity (1232 mAh g-1) at 100 mA g-1 and maintaining an outstanding performance after 200 cycles. Therefore, this work not only proposes a simple preparation method of niobium oxide hydrate but also expands the variety of high-performance anode materials.

Abstract:Spherical Al-substituted α-Ni(OH)2 for alkaline rechargeable batteries was prepared by a complexation-coprecipitation method. The morphology and structure of the samples were characterized by SEM, XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Their electrochemical performance including charge–discharge behavior, diffusion coefficient of proton (DH+), stability in strong alkaline solution and cycle life was also investigated. The results showed that the Al-substituted α-Ni(OH)2 prepared by this method manifests perfect spherical shape and the specific discharge capacity of the sample with 18.3mol% Al reaches 477mAhg−1 when the pH value of synthesis solution is 11.75. The interlayer distance, the oxygen evolution potential and the half discharge potential of the sample increase greatly with the increase of Al content. Compared with β-Ni(OH)2 without Al substitution, there are large amounts of proton defects in Al-substituted α-Ni(OH)2 which increases the diffusion coefficient of proton (DH+) measured by current pulse relaxation (CPR). The Al-substituted α-Ni(OH)2 sample shows an excellent structural stability during ageing treatment in 6M KOH solution and the loss of Al can be neglected.

Abstract:The cathode materials of Li-ion batteries for electric vehicles require not only a large gravimetric capacity but also a high volumetric capacity. A new Li-rich layered oxide cathode with superior capacity, Li[Li0.20Ni0.16Co0.10Mn0.54]O2 (denoted as LNCM), is synthesized from precursor, a coprecipitated spherical metal hydroxide. The preparation technology of precursor such as stirring speed, concentration of metal solution, and reaction time are regulated elaborately. The final product LNCM shows a well-ordered, hexagonal-layer structure, as confirmed by Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction pattern. The particle size of the final product has an average diameter of about 10 μm, and the corresponding tap density is about 2.25 g cm(-3). Electrochemical measurements indicate that as-prepared LNCM has great initial columbic efficiency, reversible capacity, and cycling stability, with specific discharge capacities of 278 and 201 mAh g(-1) at 0.03 and 0.5 C rates, respectively. Cycling at 0.1 C, LNCM delivers a discharge capacity of 226 mAh g(-1) with 95% retention capacity after 50 cycles. Si/LNCM cell is fabricated using Si submicroparticle as anode against LNCM. The cell can exhibit a specific energy of 590 Wh kg(-1) based on the total weight of cathode and anode materials.

Abstract:Nano-scale β-Ni(OH)2 and Co(OH)2 were prepared by controlled crystallization, mixed by ball milling and granulated to form about 5μm spherical grains by spray drying granulation. The granulation significantly enhanced the electrochemical performance of nano-scale Ni(OH)2, probably because of good size matching between the active material and the electric conductor. The granulated grains of nano-scale Ni(OH)2 presented high performance at high discharge C-rate, and its specific capacity at 10C exceeded that of conventional spherical micro-scale Ni(OH)2 at 3C. The granulated nano-scale β-Ni(OH)2 is a promising cathode active material for high power Ni-MH batteries.

Abstract:NiO hollow spheres are prepared by heating the NiCl2/resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) gel in argon at 700°C for 2h, and subsequently in oxygen at 700°C for 2h. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are employed to characterize the structure and morphology of the as-prepared NiO hollow spheres. These hollow spheres have a diameter of about 2μm, which are composed of NiO particles of about 200nm. The electrochemical properties of these NiO hollow spheres are investigated to determine the reversible capacity and cycling performance as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, and the advantages of their hollow spherical morphology to the electrochemical performance are discussed.

Abstract:Nickel hydroxide electrode materials have been improved for the use in Ni-based rechargeable batteries such as Ni-H 2 , NiMH, NiCd, NiFe, and NiZn batteries. A stabilized α-phase Ni 1-x Al x (OH) 2 , synthesized using wet chemical coprecipitation methods while controlling pH accurately followed by hydrothermal treatments at 165 °C, is reported. Variations in synthetic routes, dopants and morphology had strong influence on the electrochemical performance. Morphological control, crystallinity and surface modification by Co(OH) 2 were important for the better performance. Conventional battery grade β-Ni(OH) 2 is usually made of a spherical particles, but we find that circular shaped particles can be advantageous. Hydrothermal treatments increase sample crystallinity and discharge capacity. A hydrothermal treated Ni 0.8 Al 0.2 (OH) 2 -LDH sample reaches a discharge capacity of 368 mAh g −1 and a corresponding Ni 0.9 Al 0.1 (OH) 2 reaches 405 mAh g −1 . Both have a circular-like morphology and the later shows a tap density of 1.52 g cm −3 and volumetric energy density of 531 mAh cm −3 . Only a modest Co(OH) 2 surface coating is needed to reduce the polarization behavior, increase the redox reaction reversibility and electrode kinetics via formation of CoOOH species after electrochemical oxidation.

Precise Preparation Of High Performance Spherical Hierarchical Lini0.5mn1.5o4 For 5 V Lithium Ion Secondary Batteries

Abstract:This work developed a novel ammonium oxalate-carbonate composite co-precipitation method to prepare spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4. By this method combined with a facile hydrothermal treatment and particular cooling process, an ideal spinel with precise stoichiometric Ni/Mn and classic Fd3m structure is obtained, and furthermore, the Mn3+ content can be strictly limited. Additionally, the prepared LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 has a spherical hierarchical morphology, composed of nano or submicron primary particles. This LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 shows superlative electrochemical performance. It delivers a discharge capacity of 141.2 mA h g(-1), and importantly 98.2% of which discharges at 4.7 V. After 200 cycles at 0.3 C, 1 C and 3 C, the capacity retentions are 96.3%, 94.4% and 91.1%, respectively. Chemical and electrochemical measurements indicate that the elimination of the majority of Mn3+ in the obtained LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 results in the high capacity proportion at 4.7 V. Additionally, the retained Fd3m structure and spherical hierarchical morphology also effectively favour the cycling and rate performances.

Abstract:The regular and yttrium-doped spherical β-phase nickel hydroxides were synthesized by means of chemically co-precipitation. The yttrium-doping with long needle-like nanocrystallites observed by TEM promoted the formation of the spherical nickel hydroxide with the larger diameter of about 5μm. The discharge capacity of the yttrium-doped spherical nickel hydroxide was measured to be slightly lower than that of the regular spherical nickel hydroxide at room temperature. At temperatures of above 50°C, however, the discharge capacity of the yttrium-doped nickel hydroxide is much higher than that of the regular spherical nickel hydroxide. The improvement of discharge capacity at elevated temperatures was contributed to the increase of the charge acceptance of yttrium-doped nickel hydroxide. The formation of an yttrium-rich surface layer on nickel hydroxide particles raised the oxygen evolution over-potential, leading to performance improvements of the nickel hydroxide electrode. The improvement of high temperature charge acceptance of yttrium-doped nickel hydroxide remarkably contributed to the high temperature charge–discharge efficiency of the nickel–metal hydride (Ni–MH) batteries with a commercial AAA size.

Abstract:α-Ni(OH)2 is a promising candidate of the currently commercialized β-Ni(OH)2 due to its higher theoretical discharge capacity in alkaline solution; however, its instability and poor conductivity plague the practical application. Herein, we propose α-Ni(OH)2 with Co doping and spherical structure to strengthen the stability and enhance the conductivity and use it as the cathode for nickel-metal hydride batteries. Studies show that proper Co doping promotes the electrochemical reaction between the active materials and the electrolyte due to the spherical α-Ni(OH)2 with enlarged interlayer distance and abundant hole channels, as well as high conductivity of Co, therefore, the obtained spherical α-Ni(OH)2 with 7 mol% Co doping delivers significantly improved discharge capability, which is 384.6 mAh g−1 at 70 mA g−1 (0.2 C), increased by 54.3 mAh g−1 compared with pure α-Ni(OH)2, and at a high current of 5 C, it still gives 269.4 mAh g−1, in contrast 218.5 mA g−1 for the pure α-Ni(OH)2. Besides, the cycling stability of the α-Ni(OH)2 with 7 mol% Co doping maintains 340 cycles at a capacity retention of 80% (1C), which is extended 110 cycles in contrast to the pure α-Ni(OH)2. These results provide the underpinning platform of α-Ni(OH)2 for battery applications with high discharge ability and cycle life.
