Abstract:The main controlling target for tunneling beneath expressway is that the subsidence of the road should be within a certain limit to ensure regular operation of the road. It is very important to choose a reasonable construction method for such projects. Therefore, selection of reasonable tunneling schemes and control of strata subsidence are greatly important to control the impact on existing roads within an allowed limit. In this chapter, the underground engineering stable equilibrium theory and corresponding techniques were applied to the case of an undercrossing tunnel.

Abstract:Based on the statistic analysis of highway construction accidents in the past, the characteristics of these kinds of accidents are summarized. It was concluded that the occurrence of highway construction accidents are influenced by the combination of the geological conditions, the external environment of society, the runaway of construction machinery and the subjective errors of constructors. The relation among these factors is analyzed by the theory of accident causation in safety ergonomics. Aiming at the inducements, the pre-controlling mode for highway construction safety is provided. Main causes, construction process and emergency rescue methods are monitored and evaluated. Finally, pre-controlling measures are established by pre-warning analysis so as to reduce the loss caused by highway construction accidents to the minimum.

Abstract:The highway engineering process is complex, coupled with a relatively long construction period, hence requires increased coordination between participating units to prevent economic disputes and efficiency losses. The main body of the construction project needs to strengthen the management and control of funds. In this regard, this paper analyzes the importance of cost management in highway projects by clarifying and analyzing the current cost management status quo problems and causes. The highway engineering cost control strategy and implementation methods are summarized to provide references for improving the quality of highway engineering.

Abstract:This paper presents a unique treatment of competitive bidding theory as applied to pricing engineering services. Unlike low-bid procurement, the selection of engineers and design consultants is often based on several factors such as quality, availability, reputation, resume, and references, and these criteria may or may not include price. From preliminary interviews, the authors conclude that there is a need for a systematic method of evaluating potential job opportunities and determining fair market prices. This hybrid model, Value-Bidding, refocuses the competitive bidding model from a fee-based selection criteria to a value-based selection criteria. Value-Bidding utilizes an established marketing research methodology, conjoint analysis, to establish the probability of winning based on multiple factors. The resulting analytical model enables engineers to analyze market conditions, evaluate client priorities, systematically track competitors, and optimize proposals, while maximizing the probability of winning, maximizing profit, and optimizing price.

Abstract:Excessive postconstruction settlement of a highway seriously affects its service performance, a problem that deserves attention urgently. This paper describes an exploratory study on predicting postconstruction settlements of highways built on soft soil in China generated by moving traffic through mechanistic-empirical design. The mechanistic-empirical permanent deformation model proposed by AASHTO was employed in this paper, and the layerwise summation method was adopted to calculate total highway postconstruction settlements. Traffic-induced dynamic stress was obtained through a pavement dynamic model established previously by the authors and used as input to the mechanistic-empirical (M-E) design method. Localized parameters in the M-E model were calibrated through in situ road measurements at different project sites in China. Comparisons between the present work and the in-situ measurements of several highways in China indicate that the mechanistic-empirical design method can predict road postconstruction settlement in China.

This paper researched on the uncertainty of construction projects costs, proposed Monte Carlo simulation method and procedure to simulate the construction projects costs on the basis of the construction projects costs conform to the characteristics of normal distribution, and also put forward a method to calculate risks of the tender offer in accordance with the established bidding strategy, which are helpful to the risk management and control of project contracting enterprises.
