Abstract:We have read with great interest of the recently published article entitled "Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is associated with degree of collateralization in patients with totally occluded coronary arteries" by Di Serafino et al. [ [1] Di Serafino L. Bartunek J. Heyndrickx G. Dierickx K. Scognamiglio G. Tesorio T. et al. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is associated with degree of collateralization in patients with totally occluded coronary arteries. Int. J. Cardiol. 2018; 262: 14-19 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (2) Google Scholar ]. This paper indicates higher level of local MIF in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients, especially in acute myocardial infarction (AMI), these suggest that MIF elevation in CAD is triggered by ischemia, and heart is the major source of elevated MIF. MIF promotes macrophage gathering, infiltration and proliferation. In the infarct area from an animal model, co-localization of macrophages and MIF was found post-MI. Macrophage, especially the immune-suppressive type, are best-known to promote arteriogenesis (a process of collateral artery formation) in ischemic disease [ [2] Takeda Y. Costa S. Delamarre E. Roncal C. Leite de Oliveira R. Squadrito M.L. et al. Macrophage skewing by Phd2 haplodeficiency prevents ischaemia by inducing arteriogenesis. Nature. 2011; 479: 122-126 Crossref PubMed Scopus (234) Google Scholar ]. Recent studies indicate that MIF is equally important in inducing anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive macrophage functions in different conditions [ [3] Yaddanapudi K. Putty K. Rendon B.E. Lamont G.J. Faughn J.D. Satoskar A. et al. Control of tumor-associated macrophage alternative activation by macrophage migration inhibitory factor. J. Immunol. 2013; 190: 2984-2993 Crossref PubMed Scopus (97) Google Scholar , [4] Dayawansa N.H. Gao X.M. White D.A. Dart A.M. Du X.J. Role of MIF in myocardial ischaemia and infarction: insight from recent clinical and experimental findings. Clin. Sci. (Lond.). 2014; 127: 149-161 Crossref PubMed Scopus (40) Google Scholar ]. In Di Serafino's study [ [1] Di Serafino L. Bartunek J. Heyndrickx G. Dierickx K. Scognamiglio G. Tesorio T. et al. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is associated with degree of collateralization in patients with totally occluded coronary arteries. Int. J. Cardiol. 2018; 262: 14-19 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (2) Google Scholar ], more collateral artery was found in the AMI patients with higher local MIF level, which may suggest that MIF dictate immune suppressive macrophage in AMI. Studies in nasopharyngeal carcinoma indicate that MIF is angiogenic [ [5] Liao B. Zhong B.L. Li Z. Tian X.Y. Li Y. Li B. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor contributes angiogenesis by up-regulating IL-8 and correlates with poor prognosis of patients with primary nasopharyngeal carcinoma. J. Surg. Oncol. 2010; 102: 844-851 Crossref PubMed Scopus (41) Google Scholar ]. Taken together, these may suggest that MIF elevation is favorable for neovascularization, which is beneficial for MI recovery.
