Abstract:Rivers are influenced not only by natural factors such as the climate, topography, hydrology and soils of the basin, but human activities such as damming also have a significant impact on the materials transport of river. In this study, the concentrations and transport fluxes of various forms of nutrients during three natural floods and water-sediment regulation were investigated in the Yellow River. Concentration and variation of nutrient was significantly different between the natural flooding and the water-sediment regulation process. The concentration and variation of nutrient during natural floods was mainly related to the natural environment and anthropogenic activities in the source area of the flooding. While the process of water-sediment regulation was mainly influenced by the discharge from Xiaolangdi Reservoir and the downstream erosion process. Concentrations of NO3−, NO2−, NH4+and PO43− are lower during the natural flooding period than those during water-sediment regulation period; While concentrations of PP and SiO32− were significantly higher during the natural flooding period than those during water-sediment regulation period. Concentrations of NO3− and SiO32− were higher during No.2 flood and No.4 flood than those during No.3 flood. Concentrations of NO2− and PO43− during the whole flooding period, as well as the NH4+ concentrations during the No.3 and No.4 flood periods, are relatively low. In 2020, the flux of various nutrients accounted for 12%–16% of the annual flux into the sea during the water-sediment regulation period, and the flux of various nutrients accounted for 14%–24% of the annual flux into the sea during natural flooding periods. Short-term delivery of large amounts of potentially P-limited nutrients to the Yellow River estuary and adjacent sea waters can lead to nutrient imbalances, which in turn can affect phytoplankton production and composition.
