Abstract:Based on the conditional quantum dynamics of laser-ion interactions, we propose an efficient theoretical scheme to deterministically generate quantum pure states of a single trapped cold ion without performing the Lamb-Dicke approximation. An arbitrary quantum state can be created by sequentially using a series of classical laser pulses with selected frequencies, initial phases and durations. As special examples, we further show how to create or approximate several typical macroscopic quantum states, such as the phase state and the even/odd coherent states. Unlike previous schemes operating in the Lamb-Dicke regime, the present one does well for an arbitrary-strength coupling between the internal and external degrees of freedom of the ion. The experimental realizability of this approach is also discussed.

Abstract:Qubits of long coherence time and fast quantum operations are long-sought objectives toward the realization of high-fidelity quantum operations and their applications to quantum technologies. An electron levitated in a vacuum by a Paul trap is expected to be a good candidate, for its light mass and hence the high secular frequency which allows for faster gate operations than those in trapped ions. Controlling the motional state of the trapped electron is a crucial issue, for it mediates an interaction between electron spins, intrinsic qubits embedded in electrons, and its decoherence results in degraded fidelity of two-qubit gates. In addition, an efficient readout of the motional state is important, regarding the possibility of detecting spin state by using it. Despite such importance, how to achieve the motional ground state and how to efficiently detect it are not reported so far. Here we propose methods addressing these issues by utilizing hybrid quantum systems involving an electron-superconducting circuit and electron-ion coupled systems and analyze the feasibility of our schemes. In both systems, we show that ground-state cooling and single-phonon readout of the motional state of the trapped electron are possible. Abstract:In recent years substantial efforts have been expended in extending thermodynamics to single quantum systems. Quantum effects have emerged as a resource that can improve the performance of heat machines. However in the fully quantum regime their implementation still remains a challenge. Here, we report an experimental realization of a quantum absorption refrigerator in a system of three trapped ions, with three of its normal modes of motion coupled by a trilinear Hamiltonian such that heat transfer between two modes refrigerates the third. We investigate the dynamics and steady-state properties of the refrigerator and compare its cooling capability when only thermal states are involved to the case when squeezing is employed as a quantum resource. We also study the performance of such a refrigerator in the single shot regime made possible by coherence and demonstrate cooling below both the steady-state energy and a benchmark set by classical thermodynamics.

Abstract:Recent experiments [K. R. Brown, et al., Nature 471, 196 (2011); and M. Harlander, et al., Nature 471, 200 (2011)] have demonstrated the coherent manipulations on the external vibrations of two ions, confined individually in the separated ion traps. Using these recently developed techniques, we propose here an approach to realize the coherent operations, e.g., the universal quantum gates, between the separated ion-trap qubits encoded by two internal atomic states of the trapped ions. Our proposal operates beyond the usual Lamb-Dicke limits, and could be applied to the scalable ion traps coupled by their vibrations.

Abstract:A single trapped ion interacting with laser light in a radiofrequency trap is considered by diagonalization of full Hamiltonian of the system in a suitable basis. The energies, eigenvectors, probabilities of finding the atom in the ground state, density matrixes and its entanglement are computed. The study repeated for the Hamiltonian under the rotated wave approximation in the same basis. The results compared in general and in the Lamb-Dick regime for ultra-cold atoms to reveal essential changes in the results.
Non-Classicality and Non-adiabaticity in a Single Trapped Ion

Abstract:Trapped ion systems present non-classical characteristics such as squeezed states that show a quantum advantage in quantum sensing, quantum information processing and quantum thermodynamics. We analyze the non-classical characteristics of a system described by a single ion trapped by a periodic potential field. Within the regime of non-adiabatic manipulation of the potential field, the dynamics of motion of the center of mass of the ion can be described by a dimensionless parameter called the non-adiabatic parameter $Q^{*}$. This parameter allows us to distinguish the classical and non-classical characteristics of the system. Using the equations of motion of observables in the Heisenberg picture, we propose an analysis of the unitary time evolution operator and discuss the squeezing behavior in the state of motion of the ion. The results shown can serve as a basis to discuss the presence of squeezing as a resource in quantum thermodynamics in the non-adiabatic regime in actual achievable experimental limitations.

Phonon-mediated quantum gates in trapped ions coupled to an ultracold atomic gas

Abstract:We study the dynamics of phonon-mediated qubit-qubit interactions between trapped ions in the presence of an ultracold atomic gas. By deriving and solving a master equation to describe the combined system, we show that the presence of the atoms causes the quantum gate quality to reduce because of motional decoherence. On the other hand, we calculate that the gas may be used to keep the ion crystal cold in the presence of external heating due to electric field noise. We show that tuning the atom-ion scattering length allows to tune the cooling rate of the ions and would make it possible to temporarily reduce the effects of the gas during a quantum gate while keeping the ions cold over long timescales. In this way, the trapped ion quantum computer may be buffer gas cooled. The system may also be used for quantum-enhanced measurements of the atom-ion interactions or properties of the atomic bath.

Abstract:We propose a method to implement cavity QED and quantum-information processing in high-Q cavities with a single trapped but nonlocalized atom. The system is beyond the Lamb-Dicke limit due to the atomic thermal motion. Our method is based on adiabatic passages, which make the relevant dynamics insensitive to the randomness of the atom position with an appropriate interaction configuration. The validity of this method is demonstrated from both approximate analytical calculations and exact numerical simulations. We also discuss various applications of this method based on the current experimental technology.

Abstract:Optical box traps offer new possibilities for quantum-gas experiments. Building on their exquisite spatial and temporal control, we propose to engineer system-reservoir configurations using box traps, in view of preparing and manipulating topological atomic states in optical lattices. First, we consider the injection of particles from the reservoir to the system: this scenario is shown to be particularly well suited to activating energy-selective chiral edge currents, but also to prepare fractional Chern insulating ground states. Then, we devise a practical evaporative-cooling scheme to effectively cool down atomic gases into topological ground states. Abstract:We study the quantum dynamics of an ion confined in a radio-frequency trap in interaction with either a Bose or spin-polarized Fermi gas. To this end, we derive quantum optical master equations in the limit of weak coupling and the Lamb-Dicke approximations. For the bosonic bath, we also include the so-called "Lamb-shift" correction to the ion trap due to the coupling to the quantum gas as well as the extended Fröhlich interaction within the Bogolyubov approximation that have been not considered in previous studies. We calculate the ion kinetic energy for various atom-ion scattering lengths as well as gas temperatures by considering the intrinsic micromotion and we analyze the damping of the ion motion in the gas as a function of the gas temperature. Abstract:We implement sympathetic cooling of highly charged ions (HCI) by fully enclosing a linear Paul trap within a superconducting radio-frequency resonator. A quantization magnetic field applied while cooling down into the superconducting state remains present in the trap for centuries and external electromagnetic fluctuations are greatly suppressed. A magnetic field decay rate at the 10$^{-10}$ s$^{-1}$ level is found using trapped Doppler-cooled Be$^+$ ions as hyperfine-structure (hfs) qubits. Ramsey interferometry and spin-echo measurements on magnetically-sensitive hfs transitions yield coherence times of >400 ms, showing excellent passive shielding at frequencies down to DC. For sympathetic cooling of HCI, we extract them from an electron beam ion trap (EBIT) and co-crystallize one together with Doppler-cooled Be$^+$ ions. By subsequently ejecting all but one Be$^+$ ions, we prepare single HCI for quantum logic spectroscopy towards frequency metrology and qubit operations with a great variety of HCI species.

A New Mechanism for Sympathetic Cooling of Atoms and Ions in Atomic and Ion-Atomic Traps

Abstract:Sympathetic cooling of a Fermi gas with a buffer gas of bosonic atoms is an efficient way to achieve quantum degeneracy in Fermi systems. However, all attempts to use this method for cooling ions until recently were ineffective because of the unremovable ion `"micromotion" in electromagnetic Paul traps, which prevents the realization of a number of hot projects with cold atom-ion systems. In this regard, we propose a new efficient method for sympathetic cooling of ions: the use for this purpose of cold buffer atoms in the region of atom-ion confinement-induced resonances (CIRs) [V.S. Melezhik, Phys. Rev. A103, 53109 (2021)]. We show that the destructive effect of "micromotion" on its sympathetic cooling can, however, be suppressed in the vicinity of the atom-ion CIR. Here, the resonant blocking of a close collision of an atom with an ion also resists its heating due to "micromotion". We investigate the effect of sympathetic cooling around CIRs in atom-ion, and atom-atom confined collisions within the quantum-quasiclassical approach using the Li-Yb$^+$ and Li-Yb confined systems as an example. In this approach, the Schrödinger equation for a cold light atom is integrated simultaneously with the classical Hamilton equations for a hotter heavy-ion or atom during a collision. We have found the region near the atom-ion CIR where the sympathetic cooling of the ion by cold atoms is possible in a hybrid atom-ion trap. We also show that it is possible to improve the efficiency of sympathetic cooling in atomic traps by using atomic CIRs.

Abstract:Atoms and ions confined with electric and optical fields form the basis of many current quantum simulation and computing platforms. When excited to high-lying Rydberg states, long-ranged dipole interactions emerge which strongly couple the electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom through state-dependent forces. This vibronic coupling and the ensuing hybridization of internal and external degrees of freedom manifest through clear signatures in the many-body spectrum. We illustrate this by considering the case of two trapped Rydberg ions, for which the interaction between the relative vibrations and Rydberg states realizes a quantum Rabi model. We proceed to demonstrate that the aforementioned hybridization can be probed by radio frequency spectroscopy and discuss observable spectral signatures at finite temperatures and for larger ion crystals. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.223401 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:We report the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) cooling of Ba+137 ions with a nuclear spin of I=3/2 , which are a good candidate of qubits for future large-scale trapped-ion quantum computing. EIT cooling of atoms or ions with a complex ground-state level structure is challenging due to the lack of an isolated Λ system, as the population can escape from the Λ system to reduce the cooling efficiency. We overcome this issue by leveraging an EIT pumping laser to repopulate the cooling subspace, ensuring continuous and effective EIT cooling. We cool the two radial modes of a single Ba+137 ion to average motional occupations of 0.08(5) and 0.15(7), respectively. Using the same laser parameters, we also cool all the ten radial modes of a five-ion chain to near their ground states. Our approach can be adapted to atomic species possessing similar level structures. It allows engineering of the EIT Fano-like spectrum, which can be useful for simultaneous cooling of modes across a wide frequency range, aiding in large-scale trapped-ion quantum information processing. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.133.113204 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:We review recent progress in the field of cold trapped molecular ions. A new generation of collision and cold chemistry experiments between atoms and ions has emerged, where cold atoms and ions are brought into contact in a controlled way in novel hybrid atom-ion platforms. Furthermore, new possibilities for the preparation and detection of molecular quantum states with high sensitivity and precision have been demonstrated based on quantum-logic schemes. These advances represent important stepping stones for new directions in fundamental research and technological applications across various domains including precision measurements, quantum technologies and chemical dynamics.
