Abstract:We consider a shrinking flow of smooth, closed, uniformly convex hypersurfaces in (n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space with speed fu^{alpha}{sigma}_n^{beta}, where u is the support function of the hypersurface, alpha, beta are two constants, and beta>0, sigma_n is the n-th symmetric polynomial of the principle curvature radii of the hypersurface. We prove that the flow has a unique smooth and uniformly convex solution for all time, and converges smoothly after normalisation, to a soliton which is a solution of an elliptic equation, when the constants alpha, beta belong to a suitable range, provided the initial hypersuface is origin-symmetric and f is a smooth positive even function on S^n. For the case alpha>= 1+n*beta, beta>0, we prove that the flow converges smoothly after normalisation to a unique smooth solution of an elliptic equation without any constraint on the initial hypersuface and smooth positive function f. When beta=1, our argument provides a uniform proof to the existence of the solutions to the equation of L_p Minkowski problem for p belongs to (-n-1,+infty).

Abstract: In this paper, we study the $L_p$-Gaussian Minkowski problem, which arises in the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski theory in Gaussian probability space. We use Aleksandrov's variational method with Lagrange multipliers to prove the existence of the logarithmic Gauss Minkowski problem. We construct a suitable Gauss curvature flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, and prove its long-time existence and converges smoothly to a smooth solution of the normalized $L_p$ Gaussian Minkowski problem in cases of $p>0$ and $-n-1<p\leq 0$ with even prescribed function respectively. We also provide a parabolic proof in the smooth category to the $L_p$-Gaussian Minkowski problem in cases of $p\geq n+1$ and $0<p<n+1$ with even prescribed function, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:We consider an anisotropic area-preserving nonlocal flow for closed convex plane curves, which is a generalization of the model introduced by Pan and Yang (J. Differential Equations 266 (2019), 3764–3786) when τ = 1. Under this flow, the evolving curve maintains its convexity and converges to a homothety of a smooth symmetric strictly convex plane curve in the C ∞ sense. The analysis of the asymptotic behavior of this flow implies the possibility of deforming one curve into another within the framework of Minkowski geometry.

Area-Preserving Anisotropic Mean Curvature Flow in Two Dimensions

Abstract:We study the motion of sets by anisotropic curvature under a volume constraint in the plane. We establish the exponential convergence of the area-preserving anisotropic flat flow to a disjoint union of Wulff shapes of equal area, the critical point of the anisotropic perimeter functional. This is an anisotropic analogue of the results in the isotropic case studied in \cite{julin2022}. The novelty of our approach is in using the Cahn-Hoffman map to parametrize boundary components as small perturbations of the Wulff shape. In addition, we show that certain reflection comparison symmetries are preserved by the flat flow, which lets us obtain uniform bounds on the distance between the convergent profile and the initial data.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the stability of the volume preserving mean curvature flow of closed hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space. We prove that an L-2-almost umbilical hypersurface will be deformed to a totally umbilical hypersurface along the flow. Our result removes the assumption on the mean curvature in the theorems of Huang-Lin-Zhang [Peking J. Math. (2023)] and Leng-Xu-Zhao [Int. J. Math. (2014)].

Abstract:In this paper, we study the long-time existence and asymptotic behavior for a class of anisotropic non-homogeneous curvature flows without global forcing terms. By the stationary solutions of such anisotropic flows, we obtain existence results for a class of dual Orlicz Christoffel-Minkowski type problems, which is equivalent to solve the PDE $G(x,u_K,Du_K)F(D^2u_K+u_KI)=1$ on $\mathbb S^n$ for a convex body $K$, where $D$ is the covariant derivative with respect to the standard metric on $\mathbb S^n$ and $I$ is the unit matrix of order $n$. This result covers many previous known solutions to $L^p$ dual Minkowski problem, $L^p$ dual Christoffel-Minkowski problem, and some dual Orlicz Minkowski problem etc.. Meanwhile, the variational formula of some modified quermassintegrals and the corresponding prescribed area measure problem (Orlicz Christoffel-Minkowski type problem) are considered, and inequalities involving modified quermassintegrals are also derived. As corollary, this gives a partial answer about the general prescribed curvature problem raised in Guan-Ren-Wang (CPAM, 2015).

For embedded convex closed initial curves, both of the area-preserving flow and the length-preserving flow are shown to exist globally and converge smoothly to the boundary of the homothety of Wulff shape, which is determined by corresponding anisotropic function.

Abstract:We propose and analyze a structure-preserving parametric finite element method (SP-PFEM) for the evolution of a closed curve under different geometric flows with arbitrary anisotropic surface energy density , where represents the outward unit normal vector. We begin with the anisotropic surface diffusion which possesses two well-known geometric structures—area conservation and energy dissipation—during the evolution of the closed curve. By introducing a novel surface energy matrix depending on and the Cahn-Hoffman -vector as well as a nonnegative stabilizing function , we obtain a new conservative geometric partial differential equation and its corresponding variational formulation for the anisotropic surface diffusion. Based on the new weak formulation, we propose a full discretization by adopting the parametric finite element method for spatial discretization and a semi-implicit temporal discretization with a proper and clever approximation for the outward normal vector. Under a mild and natural condition on , we can prove that the proposed full discretization is structure-preserving, i.e. it preserves the area conservation and energy dissipation at the discretized level, and thus it is unconditionally energy stable. The proposed SP-PFEM is then extended to simulate the evolution of a close curve under other anisotropic geometric flows including anisotropic curvature flow and area-conserved anisotropic curvature flow. Extensive numerical results are reported to demonstrate the efficiency and unconditional energy stability as well as good mesh quality (and thus no need to re-mesh during the evolution) of the proposed SP-PFEM for simulating anisotropic geometric flows.

Abstract:In this paper, an anisotropic volume-preserving mean curvature type flow for star-shaped anisotropic $\omega_0$-capillary hypersurfaces in the half-space is studied, and the long-time existence and smooth convergence to a capillary Wulff shape are obtained. If the initial hypersurface is strictly convex and Wulff shape satisfies a mild condition, the solution of this flow remains to be strictly convex for all $t>0$ by adopting a new approach applicable to anisotropic capillary setting. Furthermore, we define some suitable quermassintegrals for anisotropic capillary hypersurfaces, which satisfy some monotonicity results along the flow. As applications, we establish an anisotropic capillary isoperimetric inequality for star-shaped anisotropic capillary hypersurfaces and a family of new Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities for strictly convex anisotropic capillary hypersurfaces.

Abstract:where V and k are, respectively, the normal velocity and curvature of the interface. Equation (1) is sometimes called the “curve shortening problem” because it is the negative L2-gradient flow of the length of the interface. By drawing pictures, one can be easily convinced that a simple closed curve stays simple and smooth along (1) and shrinks to a point in finite time, with the limiting shape of a circle. However, a mathematical treatment of (1) turned out to be rather delicate. In fact, a rigorous study did not exist until the early 1980s, when differential geometers considered (1) as a tool in the search for simple closed geodesics on surfaces. It was also regarded as a model case for more general curvature flows, which are believed to be important in the topological classification of low-dimensional manifolds. As a first attempt, Gage [10] proved that the isoperimetric ratio decreases along convex curves. Then in Gage and Hamilton [12], it was shown that a convex curve stays convex and shrinks to a point in finite time. Moreover, if one normalizes the flow by dilating it so that the enclosing area is constant, the normalized flow converges smoothly to a circle. Finally, Grayson [14] completed this line of investigation by showing that a simple curve evolves into a convex one before shrinks to a point. For an alternative approach to this result, one may consult Hamilton [18]. Recently Mullins’s theory was generalized by Gurtin [15], [16] and by Angenent and Gurtin [4], [5] (see also the monograph of Gurtin [17]) to include anisotropy and the possibility of a difference in bulk energies between phases. Abstract:In this paper, we consider the evolution of spacelike graphic curves defined over a piece of hyperbola $\mathscr{H}^{1}(1)$, of center at origin and radius $1$, in the $2$ dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski plane $\mathbb{R}^{2}_{1}$ along an anisotropic inverse mean curvature flow with the vanishing Neumann boundary condition, and prove that this flow exists for all the time. Moreover, we can show that, after suitable rescaling, the evolving spacelike graphic curves converge smoothly to a piece of hyperbola of center at origin and prescribed radius, which actually corresponds to a constant function defined over the piece of $\mathscr{H}^{1}(1)$, as time tends to infinity.

We prove that the flow has a unique smooth and uniformly convex solution for all time, and converges smoothly after normalisation, to a soliton which is a solution of a elliptic equation, when the constants alpha, beta belong to a suitable range, and the function f satisfies a strictly spherical convexity condition. When beta=1, the soliton equation is just the equation of Lp Christoffel-Minkowski problem. Thus our argument provides a proof to the well-known L_p Christoffel-Minkowski problem for the case p>= k+1 where p=2-alpha, which is identify with Ivaki's recent result.

It is shown that the global solution starting from a locally convex curve converges to an m-fold circle if the enclosed algebraic area A(0) is positive, and evolves into a point if A(0) = 0.

Abstract:We study the anisotropic Forchheimer-typed flows for compressible fluids in porous media. The first half of the paper is devoted to understanding the nonlinear structure of the anisotropic momentum equations. Unlike the isotropic flows, the important monotonicity properties are not automatically satisfied in this case. Therefore, various sufficient conditions for them are derived and applied to the experimental data. In the second half of the paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the steady state flows subject to a nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. It is also established that these steady states, in appropriate functional spaces, have local Hölder continuous dependence on the forcing function and the boundary data.

Abstract:In this paper, by using new auxiliary functions, we study a class of contracting flows of closed, star-shaped hypersurfaces in Rn+1 with speed rαβσk1β, where σk is the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the principal curvatures, α, β are positive constants and r is the distance from points on the hypersurface to the origin. We obtain convergence results under some assumptions of k, α, β. When k≥2, 0<β≤1, α≥β+k, we prove that the k-convex solution to the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly to a sphere after normalization, in particular, we generalize Li-Sheng-Wang's result from uniformly convex to k-convex. When k≥2, β=k, α≥2k, we prove that the k-convex solution to the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly to a sphere after normalization, in particular, we generalize Ling Xiao's result from k=2 to k≥2.

Abstract:We investigate the area-preserving mean-curvature-type motion of a two-dimensional lattice crystal obtained by coupling constrained minimizing movements scheme introduced by Almgren, Taylor and Wang with a discrete-to-continuous analysis. We first examine the continuum counterpart of the model and establish the existence and uniqueness of the flat flow, originating from a rectangle. Additionally, we characterize the governing system of ordinary differential equations. Subsequently, in the atomistic setting, we identify geometric properties of the discrete-in-time flow and describe the governing system of finite-difference inclusions. Finally, in the limit where both spatial and time scales vanish at the same rate, we prove that a discrete-to-continuum evolution is expressed through a system of differential inclusions which does never reduce to a system of ODEs.

Abstract:Let (Σ,g) be a closed Riemann surface, and G={σ1,⋯,σN} be a finite isometric group acting on it. Denote a positive integer ℓ=minx∈Σ⁡I(x), where I(x) is the number of all distinct points of the set {σ1(x),⋯,σN(x)}. In this paper, we consider the following G-invariant mean field type flow{∂∂teu=Δgu+8πℓ(feu∫Σfeudvg−1|Σ|)u(⋅,0)=u0, where u0 belongs to C2+α(Σ) for some α∈(0,1), f is a sign-changing smooth function such that ∫Σfeu0dvg≠0, both u0 and f are G-invariant, and |Σ| denotes the area of (Σ,g). Such kind of flow was originally proposed by Castéras [6]. Through a priori estimates, we prove that the flow u(x,t) exists for all time t∈[0,∞). Moreover, by employing blow-up procedure, we obtain that under certain geometric conditions, u(x,t) converges to u(x) in H2(Σ) as t→∞, where u(x) is a solution of the mean field equation−Δgu=8πℓ(feu∫Σfeudvg−1|Σ|). This generalizes recent results of Li-Zhu [27] and Sun-Zhu [37].
