The Influence of Confidence in Aspiration-Fulfillment Strategy on Prisoner’s Dilemma Evolution

Abstract:In reality, confidence is often used to describe a person’s level of trust in a strategy. In contrast to previous models of self-confidence, this paper offers a new interpretation of confidence that comes from the individual’s attitude toward his or her current strategy rather than from the individual himself or herself. In our model, the confidence value is quantified as the degree of adherence to the strategy, and a change in strategy will result in a reset of confidence. In addition, the update of confidence will be subject to an adaptive function of payoffs and aspirations. The results of the research suggest that the enhancement factor of confidence’s increment does not exhibit a conventional monotonic function and it is more like a double-edged sword. Populations with common aspirations are more cohesive towards cooperation than those with heterogeneous aspirations. Appropriate increases in aspiration can promote cooperation, but when aspiration exceeds a threshold, the cooperator group disappears because they cannot accumulate confidence.
