Abstract:All-optical plasmonic switches based on a novel coupled nano-disk cavity configuration containing nonlinear material are proposed and numerically investigated. The finite difference time domain simulation results reveal that the single-disk plasmonic structure can operate as an “on–off” switch with the presence/absence of pumping light. We also demonstrate that the proposed T-shaped plasmonic structure with two disk cavities can switch signal light from one port to another under an optical pumping light, functioning as a bidirectional switch. The proposed nano-disk cavity plasmonic switches have many advantages such as compact size, requirement of low pumping light intensity, and ultra-fast switching time at a femto-second scale, which are promising for future integrated plasmonic devices for applications such as communications, signal processing, and sensing.

Abstract:A plasmonic cavity filled with active material is proposed to explain optical switching. Optical properties, including transmission, response time, and field distribution of on/off state, are numerically investigated. We demonstrate that such a gain-assisted plasmonic structure can achieve optical switching in the nanodomain and shorten the switching time to the subpicosecond level. Our results indicate the potential application of the proposed structure in optical communication and photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:All-fiber modulators and switches have drawn great interest in the photonics domain, and they are applied in viable photonic and optoelectronic devices. In this work, with the assistance of an agarose membrane, aspherical gold nanoparticles are embedded on the surface of the microfiber treated with the piranha solution. An all-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer was used to realize a low-cost, low-loss, and conveniently prepared all-fiber phase modulator. By taking advantage of the local surface plasmon resonance effect of gold nanoparticles embedded in the agarose membrane, under the excitation of near-infrared region light, the gold nanoparticles were excited to change the effective refractive index of one arm of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. A maximum phase shift of similar to 6 pi at 1550 nm was obtained from the device. In addition, an all-optical switch was achieved with a rising edge time of47 ms and falling edge time of 14 ms. The proposed all-fiber modulator and switch based on the local surface plasmon resonance effect of gold nanoparticles embedded in agarose membrane will provide great potential in all-optical fiber systems. Abstract:Ultrafast optical switch based on plasmonic nanostructures has large application potentials in optical logic circuits and optical communication systems. Integration of plasmonic optical switching devices with optical fibers is a breakthrough for realizing practical applications in long-range optical data transmission or communication techniques. Here, the incorporation of plasmonic optical switch devices onto the end facets of optical fibers is reported, so that the switched optical signals are generated by interaction between femtosecond laser pulses and plasmonic nanostructures on one end of the fiber, and are delivered via the fiber waveguide to the other end for detection or decoding. "Quenching" of localized surface plasmon in the gold nanowires by its interaction with band-edge modulation in gold through strong optical excitation is the responsible photophysics. This work accomplishes for the first time the implementation of ultrafast plasmonic optical switch device on optical fiber tips for logic data transmission.

Abstract:We demonstrate all-fiber hybrid photon-plasmon circuits by integrating Ag nanowires with optical fibers. Relying on near-field coupling, we realize a photon-to-plasmon conversion efficiency up to 92% in a fiber-based nanowire plasmonic probe. Around optical communication band, we assemble an all-fiber resonator and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with Q-factor of 6 × 10(6) and extinction ratio up to 30 dB, respectively. Using the MZI, we demonstrate fiber-compatible plasmonic sensing with high sensitivity and low optical power.

Abstract:Electro-optical (EO) switches with a subwavelength device length based on metal–dielectric–metal nanocavities waveguide combined with organic EO materials have been proposed and numerically investigated. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method with perfectly matched layer absorbing boundary condition is adopted to simulate and study their properties. The FDTD simulation results reveal that these structures filled with EO materials can realize the function of switch with low-driving voltage. The wavelength conversion switch structure might become a choice for the design of integrated architectures for optical computing and communication, especially in WDM systems in the nanoscale.

Abstract:Ultra-small all-optical switches are of importance in highly integrated optical communication and computing networks. However, the weak nonlinear light-matter interactions in natural materials present an enormous challenge to realize efficiently switching for the ultra-short interaction lengths. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a submicron bidirectional all-optical plasmonic switch with an asymmetric T-shape single slit. Sharp asymmetric spectra as well as significant field enhancements (about 18 times that in the conventional slit case) occur in the symmetry-breaking structure. Consequently, both of the surface plasmon polaritons propagating in the opposite directions on the metal surface are all-optically controlled inversely at the same time with the on/off switching ratios of >6 dB for the device lateral dimension of <1 μm. Moreover, in such a submicron structure, the coupling of free-space light and the on-chip bidirectional switching are integrated together. This submicron bidirectional all-optical switch may find important applications in the highly integrated plasmonic circuits.

Abstract:The interference between spectrally overlapping superradiant and subradiant plasmon resonances generates plasmonic Fano resonance, which allows for attractive applications such as electromagnetically induced transparency, light trapping, and refractometric sensing with high figures of merit. The active switching of plasmonic Fano resonance holds great promise in modulating optical signals, dynamically harvesting light energy, and constructing switchable plasmonic sensors. However, structures enabling the active control of plasmonic Fano resonance have rarely been achieved because of the fabrication complexity and cost. Herein we report on the realization of active plasmonic Fano resonance switching on Au nanosphere-nanoplate heterodimers. The active switching is enabled by varying the refractive index of a layer of polyaniline that fills in the gap between the Au nanosphere and the Au nanoplate. A reversible spectral shift of 20 nm is observed on the individual heterodimers during switching. The maximal spectral shift decreases as the interparticle gap distance is enlarged, showing a strong dependence of the spectral shift on the local electric field intensity enhancement in the gap region. This trend agrees with the predicted dependence of the refractive index sensitivity on the local field intensity enhancement. Our results provide insights into the development of plasmonic structures supporting actively switchable Fano resonances, which can lead to new technological applications, such as switchable cloaking and display, dynamic coding of optical signals, color sorting and filtering. The Au heterodimers with polyaniline in the gap can also be applied for the sensing of local environmental parameters such as pH values and heavy metal ions.

Abstract:We report a low-power all-optical switching in a two-dimensional nanocomposite photonic crystal microcavity made of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] doped with gold nanoparticles, realized based on surface plasmon resonance enhancing nonlinearity and dynamically tunable coupling of two asymmetric defect modes. Under excitation around the surface plasmon resonance peak, the value of the nonlinear susceptibility of the nanocomposite material reaches the order of 10−6 esu. A threshold photon energy as low as 700 fJ and an ultrahigh switching efficiency of 90% are realized simultaneously.

Abstract:We propose and investigate, both experimentally and theoretically, a novel mechanism for switching and modulating plasmonic signals based on a Fano interference process, which arises from the coupling between a narrow-band optical Fabry–Pérot cavity and a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) source. The SPP wave emitted from the cavity is actively modulated in the vicinity of the cavity resonances by altering the cavity Q-factor and/or resonant frequencies. We experimentally demonstrate dynamic SPP modulation both by mechanical control of the cavity length and all-optically by harnessing the ultrafast nonlinearity of the Au mirrors that form the cavity. An electro-optical modulation scheme is also proposed and numerically illustrated. Dynamic operation of the switch via mechanical means yields a modulation in the SPP coupling efficiency of ~80%, while the all-optical control provides an ultrafast modulation with an efficiency of 30% at a rate of ~0.6 THz. The experimental observations are supported by both analytical and numerical calculations of the mechanical, all-optical and electro-optical modulation methods.

Abstract:The cover image features a plasmonic nanoswitch, which is based on the controllable plasmonic-molecular resonance coupling between single gold nanorods and photochromic molecules. The gold nanorods and photochromic molecules are both embedded in a layer of mesostructured silica. The switching behavior, which is triggered by UV illumination, was monitored by the dark-field scattering technique. The estimated power and energy required for operating a single nanorod plasmonic switch are ∼13 pW and ∼39 pJ, respectively, while the modulation depth reaches up to 7.2 dB. This optical control based on the surface plasmon can contribute as a component to plasmonic circuits, which is crucial in solving the size-compatibility problem between electronics and photonics and in merging electronics and photonics together both structurally and functionally. Abstract:The optical switch is a key component in photonic integrations that plays an important role in routing the optical signal within a photonic circuit. In this work, compact switches were proposed and demonstrated based on the interference of surface plasmons polaritons (SPP) on free metal surfaces and in waveguides. Thanks to the constructive and destructive interferences implemented in strip waveguides, 2 × 2 ports switch devices with a small footprint were achieved with a maximum modulation depth of about 80%. Moreover, an interesting composite interference was observed and analyzed in the waveguide device, which is considered to arise from a transmission/reflection interference and field superposition interference. The samples of Bragg gratings and slits with different parameters were investigated in detail, which provided convincing evidence supporting the composite interference model. This revealed that the mechanism would possibly inspire new designs and instructions in nanophotonic integrations.

Abstract:Anisotropic plasmonic metasurfaces have attracted broad research interest since they possess novel optical properties superior to natural materials and their tremendous design flexibility. However, the realization of multi-wavelength selective plasmonic metasurfaces that have emerged as promising candidates to uncover multichannel optical devices remains a challenge associated with weak modulation depths and narrow operation bandwidth. Herein, we propose and numerically demonstrate near-infrared multi-wavelength selective passive plasmonic switching (PPS) that encompasses high ON/OFF ratios and strong modulation depths via multiple Fano resonances (FRs) in anisotropic plasmonic metasurfaces. Specifically, the double FRs can be fulfilled and dedicated to establishing tailorable near-infrared dual-wavelength PPS. The multiple FRs mediated by in-plane mirror asymmetries cause the emergence of triple-wavelength PPS, whereas the multiple FRs governed by in-plane rotational asymmetries avail the implementation of the quasi-bound states in the continuum-endowed multi-wavelength PPS with the ability to unfold a tunable broad bandwidth. In addition, the strong polarization effects with in-plane anisotropic properties further validate the existence of the polarization-resolved multi-wavelength PPS. Our results provide an alternative approach to foster the achievement of multifunctional meta-devices in optical communication and information processing.

Ultra-compact optical switch based on Fano resonance in graphene-functionalized plasmonic nano-cavity

Abstract:Typical many-wavelength scale of the optical fiber-integrated photonic elements (for example, ring resonators, Bragg reflectors, Mach-Zehnder interferometers, etc.) has been an insuperable obstacle for the realization of truly integrated photonic circuits that would have the dimensions compliant with the semiconductor industry standards. Doped graphene however, promises the deeply subwavelength size of the plasmonic-based optical elements due to the very short plasmon wavelength. In this work, we propose a design of the ultra-compact fiber-integrated optical switch based on the graphene-functionalized plasmonic nano-cavity for ultrafast light modulation. Presence of graphene allows to actively control the plasmonic resonance in the cavity via the electrostatic doping, so that properly tuned Fermi level in graphene results in a strong constructive (destructive) Fano interference between the propagating mode in the fiber and the graphene plasmonic mode in the nano-cavity, increasing (zeroing) the transmission efficiency at given frequency. The nano-cavity effectively works as a plasmonic Fabry-Perot resonator, significantly enhancing the coupling efficiency as well as the interference strength. Due to the strong confinement of graphene plasmons, the active volume of the switch can be as small as 10–3λ0 –3, making it possible to build an optical circuit with a very high density of elements. Furthermore, sharp profile of the Fano resonance provides a fast switching speed even with small variation of doping. Therefore, proposed design requires very low driving voltage of ~1V, while providing the modulation depth of at least 0.5.
Broadly Tunable Plasmons in Doped Oxide Nanoparticles for Ultrafast and Broadband Mid-Infrared All-Optical Switching.

Abstract:Plasmons in conducting nanostructures offer the means to efficiently manipulate light at the nanoscale with subpicosecond speed in an all-optical operation fashion, thus allowing for construction of high performance all-optical signal-processing devices. Here, by exploiting the ultrafast nonlinear optical properties of broadly tunable mid-infrared (MIR) plasmons in solution-processed, degenerately doped oxide nanoparticles, we demonstrate ultrafast all-optical switching in the MIR region, which features subpicosecond response speed (with recovery time constant of <400 fs) as well as an ultrabroadband response spectral range (covering 3.0-5.0 μm). Furthermore, with the degenerately doped nanoparticles as Q-switch, pulsed fiber lasers covering 2.0-3.5 μm were constructed, of which a watt-level fiber laser at 3.0 μm band shows superior overall performance among previously reported passively Q-switched fiber lasers at the same band. Notably, the degenerately doped nanoparticles show great potential to work in the spectral range over 3.0 μm, which is beyond the accessibility of commercially available but expensive semiconducting saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). Our work demonstrates a versatile while cost-effective material solution to ultrafast photonics in the technologically important MIR region.

Abstract:A two-way Fano resonance switch in the plasmonic metamaterials has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The electrical Fano switch is composed of two concentric spoof localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonators. By adjusting the slit in the inner spoof LSP resonator, two different Fano resonance modes could be supported. By loading a Schottky barrier diode (SBD)across the slit in the inner LSP resonator, both Fano resonance modes can be simultaneously switched when the SBD is forward biased or reverse biased, and their switch status is opposite. Both simulated and measured results agree well at microwave frequencies and verify the two-way Fano resonance switch. The devices could be applied in many applications such as plasmonic circuits, multiway sensing or switching, and so on.

Abstract:Metafibers, by integrating metasurface at the optical fiber tip, are emerging as the significant optical coupling platforms for nanophotonics and fiber-optic communities. Here, we propose a plasmonic metafiber for converting the fundamental mode to first-order mode in fiber, and as proof of device performance, demonstrate an all-fiber Q-switched cylindrical vector laser using the metafiber. Based on polarization-dependent plasmonic resonance, a polarization-independent mode conversion metasurface is designed theoretically and numerically, fabricated directly on fiber facet, and packaged as an all-fiber component with efficiency up to 21% at 1550-nm band. Using the metafiber in an all-fiber laser, Q-switched azimuthally polarized beam (APB) and radially polarized beam (RPB) are delivered at wavelength of 1548.5 nm with pulse durations from ∼7 to ∼2 μs when pump power increases from 30 to 120 mW. The mode purities of the APB and RPB are 86.5% and 90.7%, respectively. This work outlines a new strategy to integrate metasurfaces into “all-in-fiber” systems and offers a reliable route to construct next-generation laser sources, such as all-fiber ultrafast structured lasers.

We also analyze the performance of the all-optical switch. The wavelength selectivity of the all-optical switch changed with the power of the control light is given.
