Abstract:Typically, the realization of strain vector sensing based on traditional optical fiber sensing is difficult. To address this, in this study, a multi-core optical fiber strain vector sensing system based on an in-phase and quadrature ( IQ) modulated optical frequency domain reflector ( OFDR) is designed and verified. The IQ modulation technique is used to perform a linear frequency sweep of the light source, and the strain vector information of a seven-core fiber after bending is obtained from the OFDR system using the spatial structure relation of multi- core fibers. Experimental results demonstrate that the spatial resolution of the bending strain is 28. 35 cm in an 87 m seven- core fiber with a sweep frequency of 990 MHz. When the bending curvature of the optical fiber is 1. 78 m(-1), the angular resolution is 29 degrees. Moreover, the simulation analysis indicates that when the sweep frequency range increases to 10 GHz, a theoretical angular resolution of 1. 02 degrees can be achieved, which can further improve the system performance.

Abstract:In this study, a long-distance optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) with high spatial resolution based on time division multiplexing is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Distributed strain sensing with high spatial resolution over long sensing range can be realized by reconfiguring the system layout in a time-division-multiplexed manner by re-routing the measurement signals for segmented processing with extra circulators and couplers only, rather than any other mechanisms for performance improvement of laser source or algorithms for nonlinear errors compensation. Through time-division-multiplexed reconfiguration, the sensing distance is no longer restricted by the path difference of the auxiliary interferometer which is commonly employed in OFDR systems for compensating laser frequency tuning nonlinearity. Compared with the traditional system layout, the proposed system allows distributed measurement with flexible spatial resolutions in each sub-sensing unit without any crosstalk among them. In experiments, distributed strain sensing with spatial resolution up to 5mm is achieved over an active sensing distance of 225m by the proposed system. Furthermore, the spatial resolution flexibility of the proposed system is further verified by successfully obtaining the strain information with 2 mm spatial resolution at the end of a 235-m-long fiber.

Abstract:Optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) is a research hotspot in fiber optic sensing technology. This technology can be used for strain, vibration and temperature sensing and has great application prospects in fields such as deformation analysis of aerospace components and bridge monitoring. This article analyzes the reasons for strain demodulation errors under large strains. In response to the problem of reduced similarity between the reference state signal and the measured state signal, a strain measurement method based on the similarity feature of a double-segment Rayleigh scattering spectrum is proposed. Local segments at both ends of the reference state signal are used as new fingerprint spectra, and the offset of the measured state signal similarity spectrum is synchronously searched after extension. At the same time, by revealing the mechanism of strain edge demodulation errors, a strain edge optimization method based on automatic adjustment of the sliding window center position is proposed. A comparison experiment was conducted with traditional methods to verify the effectiveness of the above method. Finally, a sensing unit length of 32.6 mm was achieved with a frequency modulation bandwidth of 5 nm, and the measurement range was from +/- 2000 mu pound to +/- 2500 mu pound. The measurable spectral offset was increased from 48% to 60%, with a maximum standard deviation of 1.9 mu pound.

Abstract:In this study, a high spatial resolution optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) based on independent component analysis (ICA) algorithm is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed sensing system, two-dimensional (2D) images with wavelength shift information induced by applied strains as a function of fiber position are constructed by utilizing the data arrays obtained after cross-correlation processing of the reference signal and measurement signals of each sensing fiber segment. The ICA algorithm, as an effective 2D image denoising technique, is applied to the constructed 2D images to remove random noise and improve the sensing accuracy of the system so as to realize long-range distributed strain measurement with high spatial resolution. Compared with traditional 2D image denoising methods including the Gaussian filtering (GF) method and the wavelet denoising (WD) method, ICA method makes full use of the independence of image source information and noise information, which is able to effectively suppress the intensification of noise without compromising the source information. With no modification on the OFDR hardware system, strain gradient information is successfully extracted over an effective sensing distance of 75 m with a spatial resolution up to 2 mm by using the ICA method. The calculated mean strain measurement error for the ICA method is 5.45 μϵ, which is significantly improved compared to the error of 72.73 μϵ when no image denoising method is applied and reduced by approximately half compared to the errors when traditional GF method and WD method are used. The mean standard deviations of the measured strain gradient along the sensing fiber length for the proposed method, the GF method and the WD method are reduced by 93.42%, 76.99%, and 84.56%, respectively, compared to the raw data without any denoising processing, showing excellent smoothness of the recovered strain profiles. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the proposed method is improved by 23.17 dB, which is better than 14.8 dB of GF and 19.1 dB of WD. The experimental results show that the proposed method provides a new solution for OFDR system on achieving long-distance distributed strain sensing with high spatial resolution.

Dynamic strain sensing using Doppler-shift-immune phase-sensitive OFDR with ultra-weak reflection array and frequency-tracking

Abstract:In distributed fiber-optic sensing based on optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR), Doppler frequency shifts due to the changes of disturbances during one sweep period introduce demodulation errors that accumulate along both the distance and time, impairing the sensing performance. Here, we report distributed dynamic strain sensing using Doppler-shift-immune phase-sensitive OFDR based on frequency-tracking and spectrum-zooming with ultra-weak reflection array. Theoretical study has been carried out with the introduction of mismatch coefficient, unveiling quantitatively the impact of Doppler shift. Following a numerical analysis of the proposed method, a retained precision has been experimentally verified regardless of the position mismatch due to the Doppler effect. Doppler-shift-immune sensing for dynamic strains covering continuous spatial resolution over a distance of 1000 m with a 2.5 cm sensing spatial resolution has been demonstrated, verifying the high fidelity promised by the proposed method.

Abstract:Spectrum registration and spatial calibration are presented and demonstrated in optical frequency domain reflectometry based sensing system for achieving a wide strain measurement range. In both dynamic and static measurement case, the feasibility of the proposed method is evaluated. First, spectrum registration is demonstrated to demodulate strain value, which increases the data acquisition rate dozens of times and also keep the high measurement range. A measurement rate up to 800 Hz is achieved. Second, the general difficulty in large strain measurement is analyzed. The combination of spatial calibration and spectrum registration is, therefore, proposed to reduce the mismatch of the spatial segments in the case of large strain variation. The local measurement spectrum segment extracted by a narrow box window for spectrum registration is proposed to maintain a high spatial resolution. Strain exceeding 7000 mu epsilon is demodulated with a gauge length of 5 mm accurately. Finally, graphic processing unit (GPU) technology is used to accelerate the data processing rate in the demodulation process, which makes it more hopeful for the practical application.

Abstract:Fiber deformation measurement is crucial in the structure health monitor, which reflects the stress, strain or deformation of the structure where the fiber is laid. The principle of the fiber deformation measurement by the optical phase tracking in OFDR scheme is described and the data processing algorithm is demonstrated in details to receive accurate results. The differential phase is acquired by making a difference between the phase spectrum of the reference and measurement states. A robust phase unwrapping method based on the density distribution is proposed to get the whole unwrapped low-noise phase of the fiber. Additionally, the phase decoherence caused by the scatter unit misalignment induced by the fiber deformation is analyzed and the phase correction method is proposed to improve the phase coherence. The fiber deformation can be tracked along the fiber with a resolution of tens of microns, depending on the set parameters of the OFDR system. Moreover, the strain distribution is also derived from the differential phase. In the experiments, the measurements of the standard single-mode fiber with uniform and non-uniform deformation have been accomplished in a spatial resolution of 40 mu m. The noise is about 0.1 mu m in a stretching range of about 40 mu m. Simultaneously, hundreds of microstrain are obtained and show a high accuracy with a resolution of the level of millimeter.

Abstract:A novel optical frequency domain reflectometer (OFDR) processing algorithm is proposed to enhance the measurable range and data processing rate using a narrow swept spectrum range and reducing the time consuming of the process distributed sensing results. To reduce the swept wavelength range and simultaneously enhance strain measurable range, the local similarity characteristics of Rayleigh scattering fingerprint spectrum is discovered and a new similarity evaluation function based on least-square method is built to improve the data processing rate and sensing performance. By this method, the strain measurable range is raised to 3000 mu epsilon under a highest spatial resolution of 3 mm when the swept spectrum range is only 10 nm and the data processing rate is improved by at least 10 times. Experimental results indicate that a nonlinearity of less than 0.5%, a strain resolution of better than 10 mu epsilon, a repeatability at zero strain of below +/- 0.4 GHz and a full-scale accuracy is lower than 0.85 GHz under a highest spatial resolution of 3 mm can be achieved. Advantages of this method are fast processing rate, large strain measurable range, high SNR, and applicability with current OFDR systems.

Abstract:A novel method to realize high spatial resolution distributed strain measurement is proposed based on phase demodulation scheme of optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR). Strain information can be demodulated directly by analyzing the phase change of Rayleigh backscattered light. Strain location can be obtained with high spatial resolution by cross-correlation method using a wide scanning range of tunable laser source. Based on the above scheme, breakpoint detection with 0.1 mm spatial resolution has been demonstrated, static and dynamic strain up to 100 Hz could be distributedly measured with 10 cm spatial resolution over 200 m sensing fiber, and the minimum measurable strain is about 1 με.

Abstract:A high-sensitivity and high-spatial-resolution distributed acoustic sensor based on phase-sensitive optical frequency domain reflectometry ( Φ -OFDR) is proposed. The vibration information is retrieved from the phase change of the complex Rayleigh backscattering. Inner-pulse division and rotating-vector-sum methods are employed to overcome the fading problem and to suppress the crosstalk along the fiber. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the waveforms of two simultaneous kilohertz-level vibrations along a 950 m fiber are recovered thanks to the enhanced crosstalk suppression ratio. The spatial resolution of 12 cm and strain resolution of 1 n ε / H z are experimentally achieved.

Abstract:A high-performance distributed optical fiber sensor based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) for dynamic strain measurement has been proposed. In this newly designed system, ultraweak fiber Bragg gratings (UWFBGs) are sparsely embedded in the sensing fiber. Through an unbalanced 3 × 3 coupler structure, the reflected lights from two adjacent UWFBGs would be mixed with each other and then split into three parts for phase demodulation. Then, a novelty table-look-up scheme is introduced to precisely demodulate the frequency, amplitude, and phase of dynamic strain. Rayleigh back-scattering light is utilized to identify and locate the accurate position of vibration event between two adjacent UWFBGs. The experimental results show that the proposed system is capable of reconstructing the vibration with a linear intensity response of R2 = 0.9986 and a fiber length variation sensitivity of 117 pm/(Hz)1/2. Meanwhile, a wide frequency response band from 50 to 2075 Hz is achieved with high signal-to-noise ratio above 56 dB.

Abstract:Optical fiber measurement technology is widely used in the strength testing of buildings, the health testing of industrial equipment, and the minimally invasive surgery of modern medical treatment due to its characteristics of free calibration, high precision, and small size. This paper presents an algorithm that can improve the range and stability of strain measurements in order to solve the problems of the small range and measurement failure of optical fiber strain sensors based on optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR). Firstly, a Rayleigh scattering model based on the refractive index perturbation of an optical fiber is proposed to study the characteristics of Rayleigh scattering and to guide the strain demodulation algorithm based on the spectral shift. Secondly, a local similar scanning method that can maintain a high similarity by monitoring local Rayleigh scattering signals (LSs) before and after strain is proposed. Thirdly, a generalized cross-correlation algorithm is proposed to detect spectral offset, solving the problem of demodulation failure in the case of a Rayleigh scattering signal with a low signal-to-noise ratio. Experiments show that the proposed method still has high stability when the spatial resolution is 3 mm. The measurement precision is 6.2 mu epsilon, which proves that the multi-peaks or pseudo-peaks of the traditional algorithm in the case of a large strain, the high spatial resolution, and the poor signal-to-noise ratio are solved, and the stability of the strain measurement process is improved.
Long-range distributed static strain sensing with <100 nano-strain resolution realized using OFDR

Abstract:Aiming at realizing a long-range and distributed static strain sensing system with nano-strain resolution realized using optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR), which is required for many practical applications, this paper provides a theoretical analysis for this system by using one-dimensional scattering model with backscattering process modelled by a set of discrete scatterers. Based on this model, the main noise sources of the sensing system are thoroughly analysed, which mainly include the intensity noise, the random drift of the optical frequency, the phase noise of the optical source, and the phase noise caused by the frequency sweep nonlinearity. The theoretical prediction agrees well with the experimental results. In the experiments, by eliminating the main noise in the system, a distributed static strain sensing system is achieved over a 25-km-long fiber with a spatial resolution of 2.5 m and a strain resolution of u003c100 nano strain. This paper provides a reference for how to optimize OFDR-based distributed static strain sensing system to obtain an ultra-high performance.

Abstract:A novel approach to realize long-range distributed temperature and strain measurement with high spatial resolution, as well as high temperature and strain resolution, is proposed based on optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR). To maintain the high measurement resolution and accuracy while increasing the sensing length, an optimized nonlinearity compensation algorithm is implemented to ensure a large wavelength tuning range. The compensated OFDR trace exhibits improved sensing resolution at a short distance, and the spatial resolution gradually deteriorates at the far end due to accumulated phase noise induced by fast tuning of the laser wavelength. We demonstrated the spatial resolution of 0.3 mm over a single-mode fiber sensing length of over 300 m, and temperature and strain resolution of 0.7 °C and 2.3 με with spatial resolution of up to 7 cm, respectively.

A Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing System for Dynamic Strain Measurement Based on Artificial Reflector

Abstract:Phase sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) has been widely used in many applications for its distributed sensing ability on weak disturbance all along the sensing fiber. However, traditional Φ-OTDR cannot make quantitative measurement on the external disturbance due to the randomly distributed position and reflectivity of scatters within the optical fiber. Recently, some methods have been proposed to realize quantitative measurement of dynamic strain. In these literatures, the fiber with or without FBGs in practice was easily damaged and with difficulty of maintenance. PZT is employed to generate strain event in the fiber. There is a large gap compared with the real detecting environment, which will not reveal the full performance of the sensing system. In this paper, a distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) system for dynamic strain measurement based on artificial reflector is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The fiber under test (FUT) is composed by four 20-meter long single mode optical fiber patch cords (OFPCs), which are cascaded with ferrule contactor/physical contact (FC/PC) connectors via fiber flanges. The fiber facet of FC/PC connector forms an artificial reflector. When the interval between the two reflectors is changed, the phase of the interference signal will also be changed. A symmetric 3×3 coupler with table-look-up scheme is introduced to discriminate the phase change through interference intensity. In our experiment, the center 10m section of the second OFPC is attached to the bottom of an aluminum alloy plate. An ordinary loudspeaker box was located on the top of the aluminum alloy plate. The dynamic strain generated by the loudspeaker box is transmitted from the aluminum alloy plate to the OFPC. Experimental results show that the proposed method has a good frequency response characteristic up to 3.2 kHz and a linear intensity response of R2=0.9986 while the optical probe pulse width and repetition rate were 100ns and 10 kHz respectively. Meanwhile, triangle and cosine amplitude-modulated (AM) dynamic strain applied on the fiber are successfully discriminated. The artificial reflectors based on FC/PCs were easily assembled and maintained, and the method of vibration transmission closely resembled the real circumstance than PZT. Therefore, these advantages will extend the potential of this Φ-OTDR technology in structure health monitoring.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR) has been widely used in various applications for its distributed measurement capability of dynamic disturbance along the entire length of sensing fiber. However, traditional Phi-OTDR cannot make high-precision measurement on the external disturbance-induced strain due to the randomly distributed position and reflectivity of scattering points within the optical fiber. In this paper, ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) array has been proposed to generate strong and controllable reflections while providing acceptable insertion loss. Active laser frequency sweeping and unwrapping algorithms were included to set up a definite relationship between strain value and variation of interference power between neighboring reflection lights. With the assistant of UWFBG array, the capability of F-OTDR has been upgraded to be able to take high-precision measurement on strain. In the experiment, multi-point mu epsilon level dynamic strain variation has been fully captured at the end of a 5-km long sensing fiber with 2 m spatial resolution. The measured strain value was compared to the calibrated one obtained with Mach-Zehnder Interferometer method. These two values fit with each other quite well with a maximum deviation of 6.2 n epsilon, which confirmed the validity and accuracy of the proposed method.
