Abstract:Due to the combined electrical conductivity and room-temperature phase transition, liquid metals (LMs) have gained intensive attention in stretchable electronics and reconfigurable devices, with functionality ranging from passive electrical interconnections or EM shielding to active sensing. The specific functionality of the LM-based composite in stretchable systems has been predetermined by the fabrication method and it is hard to realize these different functionalities simultaneously in a single process. Hetero-integrations of different functional components in an all-LM stretchable device increase complexity and suffers from poor interfacial stability. In this regard, we introduce transfer printing of liquid metal particles (LMPs) to realize controllable and programmable electrical and electromechanical properties in one step without additional hetero-integration. Reducing the LMP size leads to increasing electrical resistance (~ 200 times) and decreasing electromechanical response of as-fabricated LM patterns (~ 4 times). Reducing the adhesion of donor substrates enables the transformation from the electrical to dielectric regime. Sequent layer-by-layer air-spraying of LMPs with different sizes on glass with two laser-patterned polyimide (PI) films as masks or low adhesive donor substrates, all-LM stretchable electronics with intimate integration of spatial-dependent function components were demonstrated.
