Abstract:Chest X-rays are one of the most common and cost-effective medical imaging scans. In chest X-rays, accurate and automatic segmentation is challenging due to variances in lung shape caused by health issues. To improve the precision of segmenting the lung region of chest radiographs, we propose an improved DeeplabV3+ model to implement semantic segmentation for chest radiographic images. This method uses Vision-Transformer network to replace the original backbone network so that it can use unlabeled chest X-ray images and migrate the self-supervised model MAE to pretrain the model parameters. For the grid effect caused by the pyramid module of void space convolution from the original model, a hybrid expansion convolution scheme is designed to obtain information from a wider pixel range and avoid the checkerboard problem. To address low accuracy of lung edge segmentation, an edge detection operator is used to obtain edge labels, for the reason that details can be used to assist in the supervision of the network to improve the learning ability of the model. We selected 25,000 chest X-ray images from Kaggle's NIH Chest X-rays dataset for self-supervised learning and migrated backbone features to extract network parameters. The mIou reaches 93.47% on Kaggle's chest X-ray image segmentation dataset, which is 1.26% higher than the classical DeeplabV3+ network. We also verify the proposed method on the VOC2007 dataset.
