Abstract:Multi-mode fiber (MMF) has emerged as a promising platform for spatial information transmission attributed to its high capacity. However, the scattering characteristic and time-varying nature of MMF pose challenges for long-term stable transmission. In this study, we propose a spatial pilot-aided learning framework for MMF image transmission, which effectively addresses these challenges and maintains accurate performance in practical applications. By inserting a few reference image frames into the transmitting image sequence and leveraging a fast-adapt network training scheme, our framework adaptively accommodates to the physical channel variations and enables online model update for continuous transmission. Experimented on 100 m length unstable MMFs, we demonstrate transmission accuracy exceeding 92% over hours, with pilot frame overhead around 2%. Our fast-adapt learning scheme requires training of less than 2% of network parameters and reduces the computation time by 70% compared to conventional tuning approaches. Additionally, we propose two pilot-insertion strategies and elaborately compare their applicability to a wide range of scenarios including continuous transmission, burst transmission and transmission after fiber re-plugging. The proposed spatial pilot-aided fast-adapt framework opens up the possibility for MMF spatial transmission in practical complicated applications.

Efficient Reference-Less Transmission Matrix Retrieval for a Multimode Fiber Using Fast Fourier Transform

Abstract:Imaging through multimode fiber (MMF) provides high-resolution imaging through a fiber with cross section down to tens of micrometers. It requires interferometry to measure the full transmission matrix (TM), leading to the drawbacks of complicated experimental setup and phase instability. Reference-less TM retrieval is a promising robust solution that avoids interferometry, since it recovers the TM from intensity-only measurements. However, the long computational time and failure of 3D focusing still limit its application in MMF imaging. We propose an efficient reference-less TM retrieval method by developing a nonlinear optimization algorithm based on fast Fourier transform (FFT). Furthermore, we develop an algorithm to correct the phase offset error of retrieved TM using defocused intensity images and hence achieve 3D focusing. The proposed method is validated by both simulations and experiments. The FFT-based TM retrieval algorithm achieves orders of magnitude of speedup in computational time and recovers 2286 x 8192 TM of a 0.22 NA and 50 mu m diameter MMF with 112.9 s by a computer of 32 CPU cores. With the advantages of efficiency and correction of phase offset, our method paves the way for the application of reference-less TM retrieval in not only MMF imaging but also broader applications requiring TM calibration.

Abstract:The main challenge in multimode fiber imaging is modal scrambling caused by environmental fluctuation. How to get high contrast and high stable imaging is the main question. In this presentation, we propose some methods to increase the contrast-to-noise ratio and stability of multimode fiber imaging. Wavelength modulation is introduced to suppress the background. Exhaustive bending effect was used to improve the imaging stability. Wavelength modulation is introduced to enhance the CNR four fold in a 200 μm field-of-view imaging. We show a near diffraction limited focusing capability at imaging depths of up to 150 µm with near constant lateral resolutions of 2.1 µm. The imaging of small fluorescent beads embedded in a 3D matrix was demonstrated.

Abstract:Multimode fiber (MMF) which supports parallel transmission of spatially distributed information is a promising platform for remote imaging and capacity-enhanced optical communication. However, the variability of the scattering MMF channel poses a challenge for achieving long-term accurate transmission over long distances, of which static optical propagation modeling with calibrated transmission matrix or data-driven learning will inevitably degenerate. In this paper, we present a self-supervised dynamic learning approach that achieves long-term, high-fidelity transmission of arbitrary optical fields through unstabilized MMFs. Multiple networks carrying both long- and short-term memory of the propagation model variations are adaptively updated and ensembled to achieve robust image recovery. We demonstrate >99.9% accuracy in the transmission of 1024 spatial degree-of-freedom over 1 km length MMFs lasting over 1000 seconds. The long-term high-fidelity capability enables compressive encoded transfer of high-resolution video with orders of throughput enhancement, offering insights for artificial intelligence promoted diffusive spatial transmission in practical applications.

Abstract:Wireless communication systems operating in fading channels often demand pilots for channel estimation and data recovery, leading to substantial transmission overhead. In this paper, we propose a novel pilot-free semantic communication system designed for transmitting images over multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) fading channels. Specifically, our method involves extracting multi-scale semantic features from the source image at the transmitter, effectively embedding pilot-like information. At the receiver, we extract channel features from these semantic features at each scale, enabling the reconstruction of the source image without requiring explicit channel estimation and signal detection. To enhance the image reconstruction process, we introduce a novel module, called Resnet Transformer, which combines multi-head self-attention (MHSA) with Resnet block. Our experimental results demonstrate that this pilot-free system outperforms existing pilot-aided semantic communication methods in terms of perceptual quality and transmission efficiency.

Abstract:Images and videos provide a wealth of information for people in production and life. Although most digital information is transmitted via optical fiber, the image acquisition and transmission processes still rely heavily on electronic circuits. The development of all-optical transmission networks and optical computing frameworks has pointed to the direction for the next generation of data transmission and information processing. Here, we propose a high-speed, low-cost, multiplexed parallel and one-piece all-fiber architecture for image acquisition, encoding, and transmission, called the Multicore Fiber Acquisition and Transmission Image System (MFAT). Based on different spatial and modal channels of the multicore fiber, fiber-coupled self-encoding, and digital aperture decoding technology, scenes can be observed directly from up to 1 km away. The expansion of capacity provides the possibility of parallel coded transmission of multimodal high-quality data. MFAT requires no additional signal transmitting and receiving equipment. The all-fiber processing saves the time traditionally spent on signal conversion and image pre-processing (compression, encoding, and modulation). Additionally, it provides an effective solution for 2D information acquisition and transmission tasks in extreme environments such as high temperatures and electromagnetic interference.

Abstract:A single multimode fiber has been applied in minimally invasive endoscopy with wavefront shaping for biological research such as brain imaging. Most of the fibers, such as step-index and graded-index multimode fibers, give rise to spatially variant blur due to limits on the numerical aperture and collection efficiency. Routines to solve this problem are based on iterative algorithms, which are often slow and computer-intense. We developed a method to synthesize datasets for driving a deep learning network to deblur and denoise the spatially variant degraded image. This approach is fast (5 ms), up to three orders of magnitude faster than the iterative way. Furthermore, our method can be applied to different types of fiber endoscopy, and two types of fiber are tested here. The performance is verified on fluorescence beads and three kinds of biological tissue sections in the experiment, demonstrating effectiveness in image enhancement.

Abstract:Space domain is regarded as the only known physical dimension left of lightwave to exploit in optical communications. Recently, lots of research efforts have been devoted to using spatial modes of fibers to increase data transmission capacity in optical fiber communications. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a different approach to exploiting the space dimension, i.e. transferring image by space dimension encoding/decoding using superpositions of spatial modes in km-scale few-mode fiber. Three grayscale images are successfully transmitted through a 1.1-km few-mode fiber by employing either 4 modes, i.e. three linearly polarized (LP) modes of LP01, LP11a, LP11b and one orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode of OAM(-1), or 2 modes (OAM(+1), OAM(-1)). The bit-error rate is evaluated and zero error among all received data is achieved, showing favorable fiber link communication performance using the spatial modes of fiber for encoding/decoding. Moreover, we also demonstrate the 4 modes (LP01, LP11a, LP11b and OAM(-1)) encoding/decoding for image transfer in a 10-km few-mode fiber in the experiment. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Multimode fibers provide a unique opportunity for exploring the spatial degrees of freedom for high throughput light transmission. However, the modal dispersion prevents from the straightforward application of multimode fibers for space division multiplexing, such as image transmission. Herein, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a deep neural network termed multimode fiber inverse-scattering net for overcoming the modal dispersion induced scrambling in multimode fibers. Such a network is capable of transmitting grayscale image through the multimode fiber with high fidelity. 256-level grayscale images with 128 x 128 spatial channels encoded in the input wavefront can be retrieved from the output optical speckle patterns, where the average Pearson correlation coefficient and structural similarity index are as large as 0.97 and 0.95, respectively. Our results demonstrate that the proposed deep neural network has an excellent ability for learning the relationship between the input and output optical fields of a multimode fiber, which might facilitate the realization of high throughput space division multiplexing through multimode fibers. Abstract:With the development of the space exploration and satellite communications, the data transmission at broadband and long distance are in increasing demand. To enhance the signal transmission capability from the satellite to the earth over deep space, multiple radars from distributed ground stations at cooperative mode might be a promising solution. Broadband beamforming with high efficiency over long distance fiber optic transmission links is investigated in the paper. To achieve phase stable transmission for broadband signal, fast active optical compensation is adopted by phase locking each fiber optic link with a separate wavelength to discriminate the time jitter induced phase variation. By matching the time delays between the different channels, the signal-noise ratio (SNR) of the beamformed broadband signal is improved significantly. In the experiment, a root mean square (RMS) of time delay variations of 0.86 ps and Allan deviation of $1.74\times 10 ^{-13}$ for the carrier transmission in the phase locked fiber link over 120 km is achieved, and broadband fiber optical beamforming with data rate over 2 Gbit/s is successfully demonstrated.

Abstract:Multimode fibers with high information capacity and ultra-thin diameter offer new possibilities for non-invasive endoscopy and remote high-speed secure communication. However, due to their sensitivity, special demands are thus raised on the light sources, which act as both lighting and information carrier. We build a single-arm multimode fiber image transmission system. The impact of five different sources on transmission quality is systematically compared and analyzed. High-quality transmission of complex grayscale patterns is achieved with inverse transmission matrix. The measured structural similarity exceeds 0.65. Experimental results indicate that random fiber laser with high time–domain stability is suitable for single-fiber imaging. This work is conducive to further study of fiber imaging and provides guidance for novel fiber communication and flexible endoscopy.

Abstract:Multiplexing multiple orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes of light has the potential to increase data capacity in optical communication. However, the distribution of such modes over long distances remains challenging. Free-space transmission is strongly influenced by atmospheric turbulence and light scattering, while the wave distortion induced by the mode dispersion in fibers disables OAM demultiplexing in fiber-optic communications. Here, a deep-learning-based approach is developed to recover the data from scattered OAM channels without measuring any phase information. Over a 1-km-long standard multimode fiber, the method is able to identify different OAM modes with an accuracy of more than 99.9% in parallel demultiplexing of 24 scattered OAM channels. To demonstrate the transmission quality, color images are encoded in multiplexed twisted light and our method achieves decoding the transmitted data with an error rate of 0.13%. Our work shows the artificial intelligence algorithm could benefit the use of OAM multiplexing in commercial fiber networks and high-performance optical communication in turbulent environments.

Abstract:Fiber-wireless integration has been widely studied as a key technology to support radio access networks in sixth-generation wireless communication, empowered by artificial intelligence. In this study, we propose and demonstrate a deep-learning-based end-to-end (E2E) multi-user communication framework for a fiber-mmWave (MMW) integrated system, where artificial neural networks (ANN) are trained and optimized as transmitters, ANN-based channel models (ACM), and receivers. By connecting the computation graphs of multiple transmitters and receivers, we jointly optimize the transmission of multiple users in the E2E framework to support multi-user access in one fiber-MMW channel. To ensure that the framework matches the fiber-MMW channel, we employ a two-step transfer learning technique to train the ACM. In a 46.2 Gbit/s 10-km fiber-MMW transmission experiment, compared with the single-carrier QAM, the E2E framework achieves over 3.5 dB receiver sensitivity gain in the single-user case and 1.5 dB gain in the three-user case under the 7% hard-decision forward error correction threshold.

Abstract:When multimode optical fibers are perturbed, the data that is transmitted through them is scrambled. This presents a major difficulty for many possible applications, such as multimode fiber-based telecommunication and endoscopy. To overcome this challenge, a deep learning approach that generalizes over mechanical perturbations is presented. Using this approach, successful reconstruction of the input images from intensity-only measurements of speckle patterns at the output of a 1.5 meter-long randomly perturbed multimode fiber is demonstrated. The model's success is explained by hidden correlations in the speckle of random fiber conformations.

Abstract:High-speed optical wireless communication can address the exponential growth in data traffic. Adaptive beamforming customized for the target location is crucial, but existing solutions such as liquidcrystal spatial light modulators and microelectromechanical systems require costly micro/nano manufacturing, delicate alignment, and a high degree of mechanical stability. These challenges reflect the fragility of integrating a fiber network with micro/nano mechanical or photonic systems. Here, we realize low-cost, low-loss, and fiber-compatible beamforming and continuous beam steering through controlled bending of a multi-mode fiber that modifies its modal coupling, and use it to enable flexible optical wireless communication at 10 Gb/s. By using the fiber modal coupling as degrees of freedom rather than an impediment, this approach offers a promising solution for flexible and cost-effective optical wireless communication networks.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the challenging problem of on-demand semantic communication over heterogeneous wireless networks. We propose a fidelity-adjustable semantic transmission framework (FAST) that empowers wireless devices to send data efficiently under different application scenarios and resource conditions. To this end, we first design a dynamic sub-model training scheme to learn the flexible semantic model, which enables edge devices to customize the transmission fidelity with different widths of the semantic model. After that, we focus on the FAST optimization problem to minimize the system energy consumption with latency and fidelity constraints. Following that, the optimal transmission strategies including the scaling factor of the semantic model, computing frequency, and transmitting power are derived for the devices. Experiment results indicate that, when compared to the baseline transmission schemes, the proposed framework can reduce up to one order of magnitude of the system energy consumption and data size for maintaining reasonable data fidelity.
