Abstract:This paper proposes a new design of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) under secrecy considerations. We focus on a NOMA system, where a transmitter sends confidential messages to multiple users in the presence of an external eavesdropper. The optimal designs of decoding order, transmission rates, and power allocated to each user are investigated. Considering the practical passive eavesdropping scenario where the instantaneous channel state of the eavesdropper is unknown, we adopt the secrecy outage probability as the secrecy metric. We first consider the problem of minimizing the transmit power subject to the secrecy outage and quality of service constraints, and derive the closed-form solution to this problem. We then explore the problem of maximizing the minimum confidential information rate among users subject to the secrecy outage and transmit power constraints, and provide an iterative algorithm to solve this problem. We find that the secrecy outage constraint in the studied problems does not change the optimal decoding order for NOMA, and one should increase the power allocated to the user whose channel is relatively bad when the secrecy constraint becomes more stringent. Finally, we show the advantage of NOMA over orthogonal multiple access in the studied problems both analytically and numerically.

Abstract:This study aims to present a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) security scheme based on constellation camouflage and selective mapping. To improve the security of the system, we use a four-dimensional chaos model to camouflage high-power signals at the transmitter. The constellation diagram of high power is disguised from binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) form to quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) form, and after power multiplexing, further camouflaged from 8 points to 16 points. To improve the transmission performance of the designed system as much as possible and not increase the computational complexity, we use the selective mapping method in the process of power multiplexing and use the region decision method for demodulation at the receiving end. The proposed scheme is verified by experiments on a 2-km 7-core optical fiber, and achieves the safety transmission of a power division multiplexing-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (PDM-OFDM) signal with a net rate of 97.38 Gb/s without signal damage. The maximum achievable key space of the proposed scheme is 10135. Hence, it is a feasible and secure non-orthogonal multiple access-passive optical network scheme.

Abstract:We proposed to use the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme in 60-GHz-millimeter-wave radio-over-fiber systems, exploiting the power domain of signals to enable multiuser access, and improve the performance with users under different channel conditions. A DSP-based successive interference cancellation scheme is implemented in the receiver to remove the interference from other users. By this NOMA scheme, the system optimizes the performance of all users as a whole group and dynamically allocates the power resources between different users, such that the reception quality and reliability of the user group is significantly improved compared with current orthogonal frequency-division multiple access. To overcome the user number and security issue raised from NOMA, both orthogonal and NOMA are applied. A nonlinear conjugate gradient method is proposed in the power allocation updating process for fast convergence of the feedback system. With a centralized radio-over-fiber architecture, we enable the millimeter wave system with high-resource utilization rate and better approximation to end users with low cost. A 4-Gb/s downlink system serving three users using 60-GHz band is experimentally demonstrated and measured. The proposed scheme provides larger distance coverage, wider angle tolerance, and better shaded channel tolerance. Better reception quality and reliability are experimentally verified without reducing data rate or increasing transmission power.

Abstract:The physical layer of optical access network is vulnerable to various attacks. As the dramatic increase of users and network capacity, the issue of physical-layer security becomes more and more important. This paper proposes a physical-enhanced secure strategy for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical network (OFDM-PON) by employing frequency domain chaos scrambling. The Logistic map is adopted for the chaos mapping. The chaos scrambling strategy can dynamically allocate the scrambling matrices for different OFDM frames according to the initial condition, which enhance the confidentiality of the physical layer. A mathematical model of this secure system is derived firstly, which achieves a secure transmission at physical layer in OFDM-PON. The results from experimental implementation using Logistic mapped chaos scrambling are also given to further demonstrate the efficiency of this secure strategy. An 10.125 Gb/s 64QAM-OFDM data with Logistic mapped chaos scrambling are successfully transmitted over 25-km single mode fiber (SMF), and the experimental results show that proposed security scheme can protect the system from eavesdropper and attacker, while keep a good performance for the legal ONU. Abstract:Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been widely considered as a promising technology to enable high-efficient wireless transmissions in future 5G communication systems. In this chapter, we investigate single-input single-output (SISO) NOMA systems from the perspective of physical layer security. There into, two different SISO NOMA systems are studied in sequence so as to explore security issues in NOMA. First, we attempt the physical layer security technique in a SISO NOMA system which consists of a transmitter, multiple legitimate users and an eavesdropper who aims to wiretap the messages intended for all legitimate users. The objective is to maximise sum of secrecy rates subject to an individual quality of service constraint for each legitimate user, respectively. The investigations in this system will provide a preliminary analysis of the secure performance of SISO NOMA systems. Second, on the basis of the SISO NOMA system previously studied, a multi-antenna jammer is additionally equipped to enhance secure transmissions of the system. The joint optimisation of power allocation and beamforming design is considered. The efforts in this second system aim to propose an effective solution for realising secure transmissions for each legitimate user.

Abstract:This paper investigates physical layer security analysis of cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) communication system. A virtual full-duplex (VFD) relaying scheme with an untrusted amplify-and-forward (AF) half-duplex (HD) relay and a trusted decode-and-forward (DF) HD relay is used in this system to improve the spectral efficiency. In order to prevent the untrusted relay from eavesdropping, a simple and practical cooperative jamming scheme is designed to confuse the untrusted relay. The exact expressions of effective secrecy throughput (EST) for NOMA users and approximate expression of EST for non-NOMA user are derived. All theoretical results are validated by numerical simulations which demonstrate that the proposed VFD-NOMA scheme is superior to existing HD-NOMA scheme in cooperative system and jamming plays an important role for obtaining acceptable EST. In addition, simulation results shows that the best secrecy performance highly depends on the system parameters such as transmit powers and jamming signal power.
Short-Packet Communications in Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Systems.

Abstract:This work introduces, for the first time, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) into short-packet communications to achieve low latency in wireless networks. Specifically, we address the optimization of transmission rates and power allocation to maximize the effective throughput of the user with a higher channel gain while guaranteeing the other user achieving a certain level of effective throughput. To demonstrate the benefits of NOMA, we analyze the performance of orthogonal multiple access (OMA) as a benchmark. Our examination shows that NOMA can significantly outperform OMA by achieving a higher effective throughput with the same latency or incurring a lower latency to achieve the same effective throughput targets. Surprisingly, we find that the performance gap between NOMA and OMA becomes more prominent when the effective throughput targets at the two users become closer to each other. This demonstrates that NOMA can significantly reduce the latency in the context of short-packet communications with practical constraints.

Abstract:This paper investigates the physical layer security of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in large-scale networks with invoking stochastic geometry. Both single-antenna and multiple-antenna aided transmission scenarios are considered, where the base station (BS) communicates with randomly distributed NOMA users. In the single-antenna scenario, we adopt a protected zone around the BS to establish an eavesdropper-exclusion area with the aid of careful channel ordering of the NOMA users. In the multiple-antenna scenario, artificial noise is generated at the BS for further improving the security of a beamforming-aided system. In order to characterize the secrecy performance, we derive new exact expressions of the security outage probability for both single-antenna and multiple-antenna aided scenarios. For the single-antenna scenario, we perform secrecy diversity order analysis of the selected user pair. The analytical results derived demonstrate that the secrecy diversity order is determined by the specific user having the worse channel condition among the selected user pair. For the multiple-antenna scenario, we derive the asymptotic secrecy outage probability, when the number of transmit antennas tends to infinity. Monte Carlo simulations are provided for verifying the analytical results derived and to show that: 1) the security performance of the NOMA networks can be improved by invoking the protected zone and by generating artificial noise at the BS and 2) the asymptotic secrecy outage probability is close to the exact secrecy outage probability.

Abstract:In this letter, an orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) based non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme is investigated for the coordinated direct and relay transmission system, where a source directly communicates with a near user with high mobile speed, and it needs the relaying assistance to serve the far user also having high mobility. Due to the coexistence of signal superposition coding and multi-domain transformation, the performance of OTFS-based NOMA is usually challenging to be measured from a theoretical perspective. To accurately evaluate the system performance of the proposed scheme, we derive the closed-form expressions for the outage probability and the outage sum rate by using the Inversion formula and characteristic function. Numerical results verify the performance superiority and the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a performance improvement of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with a three-dimensional (3D) constellation and a two-dimensional Inverse Fast Fourier Transform IFFT modulator (2D-IFFT) for the passive optical network (PON). Two kinds of 3D constellation mapping are designed for the generation of a three-dimensional NOMA (3D-NOMA) signal. Higher-order 3D modulation signals can be obtained by superimposing signals of different power levels by pair mapping. Successive interference cancellation (SIC) algorithm is implemented at the receiver to remove interference from different users. Compared with the traditional two-dimensional NOMA (2D-NOMA), the proposed 3D-NOMA can increase the minimum Euclidean distance (MED) of constellation points by 15.48%, which enhances the bit error rate (BER) performance of the NOMA. The peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of NOMA can be reduced by 2 dB. A 12.17 Gb/s 3D-NOMA transmission over 25 km single-mode fiber (SMF) is experimentally demonstrated. The results show that at the bit error rate (BER) of 3.8 x 10-3, the sensitivity gain of the high-power signals of the two proposed 3D-NOMA schemes is 0.7 dB and 1 dB compared with that of 2D-NOMA under the condition of the same rate. Low-power level signal also has 0.3 dB and 1 dB performance improvement. Compared with 3D orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (3D-OFDM), the proposed 3D-NOMA scheme could potentially expand the number of users without obvious performance degradation. Due to its good performance, 3D-NOMA is a potential method for future optical access systems.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new scheme to enhance the secrecy performance of a NOMA-based coordinated direct relay transmission system (NOMA-CDRT) with an untrusted relay. The physical-layer network coding and the non-orthogonal multiple access scheme are combined to improve the spectrum efficiency. Furthermore, inter-user interference and friendly jamming signals are utilized to suppress the eavesdropping ability of the untrusted relay without affecting the acceptance quality of legitimate users. Specifically, the far user in the first slot and the near user in the second slot act as jammers to generate jamming signals to ensure secure transmissions of the confidential signals. We investigate the secrecy performance of the proposed scheme in NOMA-CDRT systems and derive the closed-form expression for the ergodic secrecy sum rate. The asymptotic analysis at high signal-to-noise ratio is performed to obtain more insights. Finally, simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and the correctness of the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a dynamic key technique based on Cellular Neural Network (CNN) for security improvement in the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical network (OFDM-PON). To enhance the encryption scheme security, a six-dimensional CNN hyperchaotic system is employed to encrypt the data. And, the keys are divided into the dynamic and static. The dynamic key is randomly extracted from a key set by incorporating the random feature of the input data. Then, the chaotic sequence generated by the dynamic key is served as the synchronous sequence for encryption. Moreover, the chaotic sequences generated by the static keys are used to resist the chosen-plaintext attacks (CPAs) and scramble the phase of QAM symbols on the frequency domain. With these processing techniques, the multi-fold data encryption can create a key space of ~10 315 to protect against the exhaustive trial. The transmission of 10-Gb/s encrypted 16-QAM-based OFDM signal is demonstrated over 20-km single mode fiber (SMF) by experiment. The results show that our proposed scheme can provide excellent confidentiality of data transmission against the CPAs and brute-force attack.

Abstract:In this article, with the aim to enhance the secure transmission and improve the utilization of spectrum resources in Internet of Things (IoT), a multicarrier nonorthogonal multiple access (MC-NOMA)-assisted full duplex (FD) network is investigated, in which nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is implemented in both uplink and downlink transmissions. The lightweight and low-power physical layer security (PLS) technology is employed to protect the information from eavesdropping. Taking the imperfect channel state information (CSI) into account, we formulate a problem to optimize the beamforming vector, artificial noise (AN), transmit power, and subcarrier assignment policy aiming to maximize the worst case sum secrecy rate under the Quality of Service (QoS) and power consumption constraints. Since the formulated problem is nonconvex and difficult to be solved, we decompose it into two joint optimization subproblems. The first is resource allocation with given subcarrier assignment, which is solved by using the block coordinate descent (BCD) approach. The second is subcarrier assignment solved by the matching theory. Our simulation shows that the proposed scheme is robust against the CSI imperfectness of the eavesdropping and self-interference channels, while providing significant sum secrecy rate improvement compared with the orthogonal multiple access (OMA), half duplex (HD) systems, and other benchmark schemes.

Abstract:This paper investigates the secrecy outage performance for a large-scale downlink system with full-duplex (FD) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmission aided by artificial noise (AN). In the system, legitimate users (LUs) are randomly distributed according to homogeneous Poisson point processes whereas a passive eavesdropper (Eve) is certainly located. We introduce a secure cooperative communication scheme, in which nearby NOMA users operating in FD mode act as jammers and generate AN to enhance the physical layer security (PLS) of the legitimate transmission. Closed-form expressions in terms of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) for a user pair are acquired. Following the mathematical results, secrecy diversity order analysis is further carried out for two scenarios, i.e., 1) fixed transmit signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the Eve, and 2) transmit SNR at the Eve being proportional to that of LUs. Closed-form expressions of asymptotic SOP for the two scenarios are also obtained. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to certify the veracity of the theoretic analysis and illustrate that the proposed scheme employing both AN and FD-NOMA is superior in the secrecy outage to the NOMA scheme without AN and the orthogonal multiple access scheme with AN. Furthermore, the SOP performance enhancement through proper secrecy rate target selection and power allocation optimization is also evidenced by the simulations.

Abstract:Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is regarded as a promising technology in achieving high capacity and massive connectivity. In this paper, the reliable transmission scheme of downlink NOMA systems is investigated. In particular, we divide the disc covered by the base station into several annular areas, where the receivers are randomly located following a uniform distribution. In this way, NOMA pairing is performed by randomly selecting receivers from two different areas. Firstly, we derive the closed-form expressions of bit error rate (BER) with quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation, where the channel is modeled as small-scale Rayleigh fading and large-scale path loss. To achieve reliable communications, then, the BER performance of the receiver with the worst channel gain in each area is studied. Finally, an optimal power allocation algorithm is proposed, which obtains the minimum transmission power and optimal power allocation factor with a given BER constraint of all receivers. Extensive simulations demonstrate the accuracy of obtained BER expressions and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. These results provide valuable insight into realizing on reliable transmission of NOMA with randomly deployed receivers.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a cost-effective, energy-saving mode-division-multiplexing passive optical network (MDM-PON) scheme utilizing self-homodyne detection for high-speed/capacity access network based on low modal-crosstalk few-mode fiber (FMF) and all-fiber mode multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX). In the proposed scheme, one of the spatial modes is used to transmit a portion of signal carrier (namely pilot-tone) as the local oscillator (LO), while the others are used for signal-bearing channels. At the receiver, the pilot-tone and the signal can be separated without strong crosstalk and sent to the receiver for coherent detection. The spectral efficiency (SE) is significantly enhanced when multiple spatial channels are used. Meanwhile, the self-homodyne detection scheme can effectively suppress laser phase noise, which relaxes the requirement for the lasers line-width at the optical line terminal or optical network units (OLT/ONUs). The digital signal processing (DSP) at the receiver is also simplified since it removes the need for frequency offset compensation and complex phase correction, which reduces the computational complexity and energy consumption. Polarization division multiplexing (PDM) that offers doubled SE is also supported by the scheme. The proposed scheme is scalable to multi-wavelength application when wavelength MUX/DEMUX is utilized. Utilizing the proposed scheme, we demonstrate a proof of concept 4 × 40-Gb/s orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission over 55-km FMF using low modal-crosstalk two-mode FMF and MUX/DEMUX with error free operation. Compared with back to back case, less than 1-dB Q-factor penalty is observed after 55-km FMF of the four channels. Signal power and pilot-tone power are also optimized to achieve the optimal transmission performance.
