Abstract:Vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes show superior multiplexing abilities in enhancing communication capacity. However, the signal fading induced by turbulence noise severely degrades the communication performance and even leads to communication interruption. Herein, we propose a diversity gain strategy to mitigate signal fading in OAM multiplexing communication and investigate the gain combination and channel assignment to optimize the diversity efficiency and communication capacity. Endowing signals with distinct channel matrices and superposing them with designed channel weights, we perform the diversity gain with an optimal gain efficiency, and the signal fading is mitigated by equalizing the turbulence noise. For the tradeoff between turbulence noise tolerance and communication capacity, multiplexed channels are algorithm-free assigned for diversity and multiplexing according to bit-error-rate and outage probability. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate a 6-channel multiplexing communication, where 3 OAM modes are assigned for diversity gain and 24 Gbit/s QPSK-OFDM signals are transmitted. After diversity gain, the bit-error-rate decreases from 1.41 × 10−2 to 1.63 × 10−4 at -14 dBm, and the outage probability of 86.7% is almost completely suppressed.

Abstract:Vortex beams (VBs), characterized by helical phase front and orbital angular momentum (OAM), have shown perspective potential in improving communication capacity density for providing an additional multiplexing dimension. Here, we propose a diffractive deep neural network (D 2 NN) method for OAM mode multiplexing and demultiplexing. By designing the D 2 NN model and simulating light propagation through multiple diffractive screens, the phase and amplitude values can be automatically adjusted to manipulate the wavefront of light beams. Training the D 2 NN model with mode coupler and separator functions, we convert VBs into target light fields with the diffraction efficiency exceeds 97%, and the mode purities are over 97%. Constructing an OAM multiplexing link, we successfully multiplex and demultiplex two OAM channels that carry 16-QAM signals in simulation, and the demodulated bit-error-rates are below 1×10 -4 . It is anticipated that the D 2 NN can perform flexible modulation of multiple OAM modes, which may open a new avenue for high-capacity OAM communication and all-optical information processing, etc.

Abstract:Optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode multiplexing has emerged as a promising technique for boosting communication capacity. However, most existing studies have concentrated on channel (de)multiplexing, overlooking the critical aspect of channel routing. This challenge involves the reallocation of multiplexed OAM modes across both spatial and temporal domains—a vital step for developing versatile communication networks. To address this gap, we introduce a novel approach based on the time evolution of OAM modes, utilizing the orthogonal conversion and diffractive modulation capabilities of unitary transformations. This approach facilitates high-dimensional orthogonal transformations of OAM mode vectors, altering both the propagation direction and the spatial location. Using Fresnel diffraction matrices as unitary operators, it manipulates the spatial locations of light beams during transmission, breaking the propagation invariance and enabling temporal evolution. As a demonstration, we have experimentally implemented the deep routing of four OAM modes within two distinct time sequences. Achieving an average diffraction efficiency above 78.31%, we have successfully deep-routed 4.69 Tbit·s −1 quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals carried by four multiplexed OAM channels, with a bit error rate below 10 –6 . These results underscore the efficacy of our routing strategy and its promising prospects for practical applications.

Abstract:Shaping modulation formats in multi-dimensional (MD) space is an effective approach to harvest spectral efficiency gains in both the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and the optical fiber channel. In the first part of this paper, existing MD geometrically-shaped modulations for fiber optical communications are reviewed. It is shown that large gains can be obtained by exploiting correlation in the dimensions or/and by increasing the cardinality of the modulation format. Practical limitations and challenges are also discussed together with efficient solutions. In the second part, we extend the recently proposed four-dimensional (4D) modulation format family based on the constraint of orthant-symmetry to high spectrum efficiencies up to 10 b/4D-sym by maximizing generalized mutual information for AWGN channel. Reach increases of up to 25 for a multi-span optical fiber transmission system are reported. Lastly, with the help of a recently introduced nonlinear interference (NLI) model, an optimization for designing nonlinear-tolerant 4D modulation formats is introduced for a single-span optical fiber system. Simulation results show that the proposed NLI model-based 4D modulation format could increase the effective SNRs by 0.25 dB with respect to the AWGN channel-optimal 4D modulation format.

Abstract:In this letter, we consider transceivers with spatially-constrained antenna apertures of rectangular symmetry, and aim to improve of spatial degrees of freedom (DoF) and channel capacity leveraging evanescent waves for information transmission in near-field scenarios based on the Fourier plane-wave series expansion. The treatment is limited to an isotropic scattering environment but can be extended to the non-isotropic case through the linear-system theoretic interpretation of plane-wave propagation. Numerical results show that evanescent waves have the significant potential to provide additional DoF and capacity in the reactive near-field region.

Abstract:We report an approach to the increase of signal channels in free-space optical communication based on composed optical vortices (OVs). In the encoding process, conventional algorithm employed for the generation of collinearly superimposed OVs is combined with a genetic algorithm to achieve high-volume OV multiplexing. At the receiver end, a novel Dammann vortex grating is used to analyze the multihelix beams with a large number of OVs. We experimentally demonstrate a digitized system which is capable of transmitting and receiving 16 OV channels simultaneously. This system is expected to be compatible with a high-speed OV multiplexing technique, with potentials to extremely high-volume information density in OV communication.

Abstract:Mode division multiplexing (MDM) in optical fibers enables multichannel capabilities for various applications, including data transmission, quantum networks, imaging, and sensing. However, MDM optical fiber systems, usually necessities bulk-optics approaches for launching different orthogonal fiber modes into the multimode optical fiber, and multiple-input multiple-output digital electronic signal processing at the receiver side to undo the arbitrary mode scrambling in a circular-core optical fiber. Here we show that a high-dimensional optical fiber communication system can be entirely implemented by a reconfigurable integrated photonic processor, featuring kernels of multichannel mode multiplexing transmitter and all-optical descrambling receiver. High-speed and inter-chip communications involving six spatial- and polarization modes have been experimentally demonstrated with high efficiency and high-quality eye diagrams, despite the presence of random mode scrambling and polarization rotation in a circular-core few-mode fiber. The proposed photonic integration approach holds promising prospects for future space-division multiplexing applications.

Abstract:To increase system capacity of underwater optical communications, we employ the spatial domain to simultaneously transmit multiple orthogonal spatial beams, each carrying an independent data channel. In this paper, we multiplex and transmit four green orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams through a single aperture. Moreover, we investigate the degrading effects of scattering/turbidity, water current, and thermal gradient-induced turbulence, and we find that thermal gradients cause the most distortions and turbidity causes the most loss. We show systems results using two different data generation techniques, one at 1064 nm for 10-Gbit/s/beam and one at 520 nm for 1-Gbit/s/beam, we use both techniques since present data-modulation technologies are faster for infrared (IR) than for green. For the higher-rate link, data is modulated in the IR, and OAM imprinting is performed in the green using a specially-designed metasurface phase mask. For the lower rates, a green laser diode is directly modulated. Finally, we show that inter-channel crosstalk induced by thermal gradients can be mitigated using multi-channel equalisation processing.

Abstract:Borrowing methodology from quantum mechanics, we propose and develop a density-matrix formalism for modal coupling and dispersion in mode-division multiplexing communications systems. The central concept in our formalism is the density matrix, from which all observable information of an optical field can be handily accessed. In the formalism, we derive fundamental evolution equations and concatenation rules for the key elements that characterize essential modal properties, and construct a statistical model ready for the numerical analysis of stochastic light propagation in randomly perturbed fibers. Unlike the Stokes-vector formalism that requires J2 - 1 auxiliary Gell-Mann matrices, the density-matrix formalism can be directly formulated for arbitrary modal-space dimension J. Based on the density-matrix formalism, the statistical modal properties of a 4-mode fiber under random perturbation are numerically investigated, which raises an interesting possibility of optimizing the modal dispersion by manipulation of the random perturbation.
Learning-enabled data transmission with up to 32 multiplexed orbital angular momentum channels through a commercial multi-mode fiber

Abstract:Multiplexing orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes enable high-capacity optical communication. However, the highly similar speckle patterns of adjacent OAM modes produced by strong mode coupling in common fibers prevent the utility of OAM channel demultiplexing. In this paper, we propose a machine learning-supported fractional OAM-multiplexed data transmission system to sort highly scattered data from up to 32 multiplexed OAM channels propagating through a commercial multi-mode fiber parallelly with an accuracy of >99.92%, which is the largest bit number of OAM superstates reported to date (to the best of our knowledge). Here, by learning limited samples, unseen OAM superstates during the training process can be predicted precisely, which reduces the explosive quantity of the dataset. To verify its application, both gray and colored images, encoded by the given system, have been successfully transmitted with error rates of <0.26%. Our work might provide a promising avenue for high-capacity OAM optical communication in scattering environments.
New orbital angular momentum multiplexing strategy: beyond the capacity limit of free-space optical communication

Abstract:Free space optical (FSO) communication can exploit mode-division multiplexing using orthogonal spatial modes of Laguerre Gaussian beams, such as orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes, wherein OAM multiplexing offers potentially infinite information capacity due to the arbitrary quantization of OAM. Combined with polarization-division multiplexing and wavelength-division multiplexing, OAM multiplexing is a promising solution for future capacity demands. However, the practically addressable number of spatial subchannels is severely limited by the receiver size and the rapid beam expansion with increasing mode order and communication distance. Based on the intrinsic and distinctive property that the divergent degree of the innermost ring of a Laguerre-Gaussian beam is significantly slower than that of the beam cross-section during propagation, here we propose theoretically and demonstrate experimentally a novel communication strategy innermost ring dominated OAM (IRD-OAM) multiplexingn that can overcome these limits and achieve up to 1238% capacity of conventional OAM multiplexing in a canonical FSO link system without any additional hardware modifications. Alternatively, our strategy can also enable longer communication distance (403% of that for conventional OAM multiplexing), or smaller receiver (26.9% in size compared to conventional OAM multiplexing), while maintaining the same capacity as conventional OAM multiplexing. Our work will hasten the development of future FSO communications with ultra high capacity, ultra long distance and highly-integrated devices for deep space, near Earth and Earth surface applications.

Abstract:Photons propagating in Laguerre-Gaussian modes have characteristic orbital angular momenta, which are fundamental optical degrees of freedom. The orbital angular momentum of light has potential application in high-capacity optical communication and even in quantum information processing. In this work, we experimentally construct a ring cavity with four lenses and four mirrors that is completely degenerate for Laguerre-Gaussian modes. By measuring the transmitted peaks and patterns of different modes, the ring cavity is shown to support more than 31 Laguerre-Gaussian modes. The constructed degenerate cavity opens a new way for using the unlimited resource of available angular momentum states simultaneously.

Abstract:Multi-plane light converters (MPLC) are a means of deconstructing a wavefront into constituent modes that are focused at specific spatial locations, and the reverse—that specific inputs result in controlled modal output. We have used a pair of MPLCs with 21 Hermite–Gaussian modes to represent a free-space optical connection. The effects of strong atmospheric turbulence (Cn2 = 10−13 m−2/3) are emulated using a micromirror array producing a time sequence of aberrating frames. The modal crosstalk between transmitter and receiver modes induced by the turbulence is presented by measuring the intensity in receiver channels for the same turbulence. Six receiver modes are used for optical communication channels with a rate of 137 Gbits/s displaying the benefits of single input multiple output (SIMO) operation for overcoming the deleterious effects of turbulence.

Abstract:Broadband and low‐crosstalk mode de/multiplexers are critical for orbital angular momentum (OAM)‐based space division multiplexing. Here, an in‐depth look at the design of de/multiplexer using optical diffraction neural networks is provided, and a low‐crosstalk and massive‐channels OAM de/multiplexer operating in the full C+L band is demonstrated. These results have great application prospects for the design of de/multiplexers and mode division multiplexing communication system. Optical communication technology based on the wavelength, time, polarization, and complex amplitude of light is approaching a bottleneck, while the spatial dimension is relatively unexplored. Orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams are an important group of spatial light beams that are promising for increasing the optical communication capacity based on their orthogonality. To effectively utilize this spatial dimension of light, broadband and low‐crosstalk OAM mode de/multiplexing devices are indispensable. In this work, by exploiting an optical diffraction neural network, a low‐crosstalk OAM de/multiplexer operating in the full C+L band is developed and demonstrated. The device can support 16 OAM modes (l = ±1 to ±8) with 5 phase plates (8‐level phase), and the designed insertion loss and average intermode crosstalk are better than −2.8 and −30.9 dB, respectively. In particular, multiplexing and demultiplexing are experimentally performed on the same device. The measured average insertion loss in mutltiplexing and demulteplexing is −6.1 to −5.4 and −6.8 to −5.8 dB, respectively, and the corresponding average intermode crosstalk is −27.2 to −22.7 and −26.5 to −22.4 dB. The results in this work have great application prospects for the design of mode de/multiplexers and mode division multiplexing communication systems.

Abstract:Vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) have gained much interest in optical communications because they can be used to expand the number of multiplexing channels and greatly improve the transmission capacity. However, the number of states used for OAM-based communication is generally limited by the imperfect OAM generation, transmission, and demultiplexing methods. In this work, we proposed a dense space-division multiplexing (DSDM) scheme to further increase the transmission capacity and transmission capacity density of free space optical communications with a small range of OAM modes exploiting a multi-ring perfect vortex (MRPV). The proposed MRPV is generated using a pixel checkerboard complex amplitude modulation method that simultaneously encodes amplitude and phase information in a phase-only hologram. The four rings of the MRPV are mutually independent channels that transmit OAM beams under the condition of occupying only one spatial position, and the OAM mode transmitted in these spatial channels can be efficiently demodulated using a multilayer annular aperture. The effect of atmospheric turbulence on the MRPV was also analyzed, and the results showed that the four channels of the MRPV can be effectively separated under weak turbulence conditions. Under the condition of limited available space and OAM states, the proposed DSDM strategy exploiting MRPV might inspire wide optical communication applications exploiting the space dimension of light beams.

Abstract:Recognized in the 1990s, vortex beams' ability to carry orbital angular momentum (OAM) has significantly contributed to applications in optical manipulation and high-dimensional classical and quantum information communication. However, inherent diffraction in free space results in the inevitable expansion of beam size and divergence contingent upon the OAM, limiting vortex beams' applicability in areas such as spatial mode multiplexing communication, fiber-optic data transmission, and particle manipulation. These domains necessitate vortex beams with OAM-independent propagation characteristics. We introduce iso-propagation vortices (IPVs), vortex beams characterized by OAM-independent propagation behavior, achieved through precise radial index configuration of Laguerre-Gaussian beams. IPVs display notable transmission dynamics, including a reduced quality factor, resilience post-damage, and decreased and uniform modal scattering under atmospheric turbulence. Their distinctive attributes render IPVs valuable for potential applications in imaging, microscopy, optical communication, metrology, quantum information processing, and light-matter interactions. Notably, within optical communication, the case study suggests that the IPV basis, due to its OAM-independent propagation behavior, provides access to a more extensive spectrum of data channels compared with conventional spatial multiplexing techniques, consequently augmenting information capacity.
