Abstract:We present a nonreciprocal thermal emitter based on the dynamic modulation of graphene. A graphene ribbon grating situated on a dielectric slab is designed to excite high-quality resonances in the long-IR region. We show that upon space-time modulation of the Fermi energy of graphene, asymmetric modal splitting results in large nonreciprocity, leading to a strong violation of Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation. We further show that the graphene system allows the creation of "absorptivity holes" and "emissivity holes" in the spectrum that are asymmetric. By changing the modulation frequency, the location of these holes can be adjusted, giving rise to a new dimension of tunable thermal emission in nonreciprocal systems. In this system, while Kirchhoff's law is violated, we numerically observe certain symmetry properties between absorption and emission. We establish that these symmetry properties follow compound symmetry considerations.

Abstract:Nonreciprocal thermal radiation is an emerging research direction, which can be achieved by adding anisotropic magneto-optical materials to some optical components. At present, most of the research focuses on nonreciprocal thermal radiation under TM polarization. In this paper, we propose a nonreciprocal emitter under TE polarization, which is a dual-band nonreciprocal emitter. There are twice guided mode resonances (GMRs) between 13 μm and 16 μm. It is a grating composed of a metal Ag and a magneto-optical material InAs. When the applied magnetic field is 3T, more than 90 % nonreciprocity is achieved at the incident wavelengths of 13.845 μm and 15.32 μm. In addition, we add a layer of graphene to the grating ridge to tune the peak position. It has a wide range of applications for the study of nonreciprocal thermal radiation, which can improve the energy conversion efficiency.

Abstract:Various nonreciprocal thermal emitters, which provide opportunities for higher energy conversion efficiency, have been proposed to completely violate the traditional Kirchhoff's law. However, the tunable nonreciprocal thermal emitters remain barely investigated. In this paper, by sandwiching a graphene monolayer between a top metallic grating and a bottom magneto-optical film backed with a metallic mirror, we achieve tunable nonreciprocal radiation effect. It is shown that strong nonreciprocal radiation for graphene under initial state is realized at wavelength around 14.845 μm when the incident angle is 30° and the external magnetic field is 3 T. The physical origin behind such phenomenon is disclosed by investigating both the distribution of magnetic field at the resonant peak and the coupled-mode theory. Besides, the nonreciprocal radiation performance remains perfectly within certain range of structure parameters, which is benefit for practical fabrication and applications. More importantly, the strong nonreciprocal radiation of the proposed scheme can be flexibly tuned by the gate voltage of graphene without redesigning and refabricating the structure. We believe that this work will provide new approaches for the design of novel energy harvesting systems and nonreciprocal thermal emitters.

Abstract:Controlling thermal radiation in nanoscale is critical for verifying the Planck's law in subwavelength limit, and is the key for a range of innovative technologies including energy, display and security. Benefit from the superior electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties, electrically biased graphene has been recently demonstrated as promising thermal emitter with only one-atom thickness. Here, we show an enhancement of Joule heating effect in graphene by confining the current flow through narrow constrictions. The lattice temperature distribution of graphene shows a well localized "hot spot" at the middle of the constriction. Hexagonal boron nitride encapsulated graphene devices can sustain high lattice temperature up to similar to 1600 K, enabling localized light emission from the constriction in air. The spectrum of graphene emitter is drastically modified to visible range by the photonic cavity composed of SiO2 and hBN dielectrics. The intensity of emission can be tuned by changing the applied bias voltage. A 4 X 4 graphene emitters array is realized using chemical vapor deposited graphene and atomic layer deposited Al2O3 capping layer to demonstrate the scalability and compatibility to Si platform of this technique. The results explore one potential "killer application" of graphene-based devices as electrically driven thermal emitters, paving the way for future nano-optoelectronics.

Abstract:The emissivity and absorptivity of nonreciprocal thermal emitters are not constrained by the well-known Kirchhoff law of thermal radiation, which usually serves as the theoretical basis to characterize thermal properties. When thermal emitters are nondiffracting, which is the case in previous studies of nonreciprocal thermal emitters, the angular distribution of emissivity and absorptivity is mirror symmetric with respect to the normal direction, and the nonreciprocal effect is confined to a relatively narrow angular range. In this work, we consider nonreciprocal thermal emitters that can simultaneously couple to multiple diffraction channels. We show that the symmetry relation between absorptivity and emissivity can be broken in such multichannel emitters. The angular range in which the nonreciprocal effect is strong can also be significantly broadened. Such multichannel emitters can operate as one-way energy splitters. Our work significantly broadens the flexibility of thermal-radiation control in nonreciprocal thermal-emitter design.

This opto-electronic device with faster operating mode, which is in principle only limited by electronics and not by the thermal inertia, will facilitate the practical application of active thermal management, thermal circuits, and thermal computing with photon-based near-field thermal transport.
Narrowband Diffuse Thermal Emitter Based on Surface Phonon Polaritons

Abstract:Abstract Thermal emission engineering with ability to realize spectral and spatial selection has attracted great attention in recent years. Nanophotonic control of thermal radiation has demonstrated narrowband thermal emitter but with high angle-sensitivity and diffuse thermal emitter but with low quality factor (Q). Here, we demonstrate a simultaneous narrowband, diffuse thermal emitter consisting of 80 nm (<λ/100) thick Ge nanostructures on a silicon carbide (SiC) phononic material. Based on surface phonon polaritons, a spectral coherent emission with a high Q factor of 101 is achieved at ∼10.9 μm wavelength in experiment. Furthermore, this phonon-mediated nanostructure provides spatial control with strong diffuse thermal emission with a full angle at half maximum of 70°. Additionally, the emission wavelength and intensity are tuned by replacing Ge with phase change materials (Ge2Sb2Te5 and In3SbTe2). The designed narrowband diffuse thermal emitter offers new perspectives for the engineering of emission and paves the way for infrared applications, including thermal sources, radiative cooling, infrared sensing, and thermal photovoltaics.

Abstract:In this work, we theoretically investigate non-reciprocal propagation of terahertz (THz) waves through a photonic crystal cavity integrated with graphene under external magnetic field. The magnetic field applied perpendicular to the graphene plane introduces an asymmetric conductivity tensor into the system, thus the Jones matrix of THz waves propagating in one direction is not the transpose of the one in the reversal direction. As a consequence, non-reciprocal propagation is achieved in the THz regime, which has been verified by the calculation of nonreciprocal photonic band structures, transmission spectra, and also electrical-field distributions. Further, by tuning the magnetic field or the Fermi level of graphene, such non-reciprocal transmission can be drastically tuned. This tunable non-reciprocity at the level of material response enables us to design photonic structures which can let a specific mode pass but its time-reversal counterpart stop. Moreover, high-performance non-reciprocal features have been found in periodic photonic crystal stacks with graphene. Our investigations may provide a unique approach to guide THz waves and achieve potential applications on one-way devices (e. g. isolators) in the THz regime. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2014

Abstract:The surface plasmon polaritons of graphene coupled with hyperbolic phonon polaritons of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have been considered as the ideal platform to enhance thermal emitter, which provides a powerful tool to implement energy conversion and thermal management. The conventional approaches for the strong plasmon − phonon coupling rely on the bulk hBN materials, which usually have a large footprint and display little tunability. Recently, hBN atomic emitter has been demonstrated that its peak emissivity is hopefully as high as the bulk hBN emitters. Here, we propose a graphene/hBN thermal emitter atomic system to flexibly modify the spectral emissivity by the strong plasmon − phonon coupling effect, which can be separately manipulated by the graphene width, chemical potential of graphene, number of hBN atomic layers and hBN width. Our scheme is hopefully realizing a comparable function with the bulk graphene/hBN system. Furthermore, we employ coupled oscillator model involving three oscillators to investigate the energy exchange, mode evolution between three plasmon − phonon hybridized modes, providing an excellent agreement with simulated and theoretical results. Consequently, optically manipulating plasmon − phonon interaction opens a broad design space for the spectral emissivity control, which explores the mid-infrared applications of advanced graphene thermo-optoelectronics and electrically driven thermal emitters.

Abstract:Nonreciprocal thermal radiation (NTR) holds great promise in revolutionizing energy harvesting and conversion process, has become a hot topic of various research fields ranging from renewable energy, molecular sensing, to thermal circuitry and camouflage. Despite intensive effort into enhance the nonreciprocal response, static manipulation of NTR has limited the potential application, dynamic control of thermal radiation is highly demanded. Here, by using a multilayered stack comprised of vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) thin film, germanium (Ge) spacer layer, Weyl semimetal (WSM) layer terminated by molybdenum (Mo) substrate, we propose a thermally tunable nonreciprocal emitter. The effects of the incident angle ( θi ), azimuthal angle ( φi ), and the thickness of each layer for the VO 2 /Ge/WSM stack on the characteristics of thermal radiation have been discussed thoroughly. Dominant peaks and dips of nonreciprocity have been obtained with an incident angle of θi=60° and azimuthal angle of φi=0° . A switching effect between the near-unity nonreciprocity ("ON") and zero nonreciprocity ("OFF") states are induced when the temperature increases from 20 °C to 68 °C. It is shown that the magnitude and sign of the nonreciprocity can be managed simultaneously for transverse electric ( s -) and transverse magnetic ( p -) polarizations. The proposed structure shows good near-unity nonreciprocity stability in a wide range of θi and φi . This structurally lithography-free nonreciprocal thermal emitter not only provides the ability to tune nonreciprocal radiative properties, but also leads to the possible development of power scavenging and conversion devices.

Abstract:Spatially resolved dynamically reconfigurable control of thermal emission has comprehensive implications for fundamental science and technological applications, such as thermal camouflage and adaptive radiative heating/cooling. Materials and systems that can spatially control thermal emission with dynamic reconfigurability, simple manufacturability, and a large dynamic range have not been explored, so far. Here, a spatially resolved thermal emission control platform consisting of three components (a VO2 material with phase transition hysteresis, a thermal photonic device with a field-optimized planarized structure, and an optically controllable patterning system) is built and validated. This platform presents excellent merits such as spatially resolved control of thermal emission, multilevel (up to nine levels) emission control with a large dynamic range of the emissivity modulation (0.19 for the insulating phase and 0.91 for the metallic phase) over a broad bandwidth (8-14 mu m), and robust reconfigurability. The results demonstrate potential applications in the field of thermal photonics for information and energy harvesting.

Abstract:The giant enhancement of multi-band nonreciprocal radiation effect, which based on the Weyl semimetal-dielectric spacer-Thue morse multilayer-metallic mirror structure, is investigated. As an illustration, a novel dual-band nonreciprocal thermal emitter based on the proposed scheme, is designed and studied. The results show that two pairs of nonoverlapping absorptivity and emissivity spectra could be realized, which results in the realization of strong dual-band nonreciprocal radiation. The physical origin behind this phenomenon is revealed by the amplitude distribution of the magnetic field and confirmed by the impedance matching theory. The dependence of the nonreciprocal radiation property on the incident angle and the structure dimensions is investigated, and it is show that the nonreciprocal performance remains stability in a large range of dimensions, which lowers the costs of fabrication. Above all, a multi-band nonreciprocal thermal emitter with band number larger than two can be easily achieved by increase the generation of the Thue-morse multilayer. It is believed the proposed scheme will promote the development of novel multi-band nonreciprocal thermal emitters.

Abstract:A novel scheme for achieving multichannel nonreciprocal thermal radiation, which is in the form of a photonic crystal heterostructure sandwiched between two symmetric dielectric spacers and Weyl semimetal film backed with a metal film, is proposed and studied. A dual-channel nonreciprocal thermal emitter is first designed and studied as an illustration. It is found that near-perfect nonreciprocal radiations are realized at two different wavelengths at the same time. The underlying physical origin of this phenomenon is disclosed by investigating the magnetic field distribution. In addition, the novel dual-channel nonreciprocal radiation performance is robust to variations in geometric parameters, which will benefit real fabrication and application. What's more, the scheme can be easily expanded to achieve multi-band nonreciprocal radiation with the channel number larger than two by simply increasing the sequence order of the photonic crystal heterostructure. The scheme proposed in this paper provides a new possibility to develop novel multichannel nonreciprocal thermal emitters.

Abstract:Objects around us constantly emit and absorb thermal radiation. The emission and absorption processes are governed by two fundamental radiative properties: emissivity and absorptivity. For reciprocal systems, the emissivity and absorptivity are restricted to be equal by Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation. This restriction limits the degree of freedom to control thermal radiation and contributes to an intrinsic loss mechanism in photonic energy harvesting systems. Existing approaches to violate KirchhofFs law typically utilize magneto-optical effects with an external magnetic field. However, these approaches require either a strong magnetic field (similar to 3T) or narrow-band resonances under a moderate magnetic field (similar to 0.3T), because the nonreciprocity in conventional magneto-optical effects is weak in the thermal wavelength range. Here, we show that the axion electrodynamics in magnetic Weyl semimetals can be used to construct strongly nonreciprocal thermal emitters that nearly completely violate Kirchhoff's law over broad angular and frequency ranges without requiring any external magnetic field.

Abstract:Nanoscale photothermal sources find important applications in theranostics, imaging, and catalysis. In this context, graphene offers a unique suite of optical, electrical, and thermal properties, which we exploit to show self-consistent active photothermal modulation of its nanoscale response. In particular, we predict the existence of plasmons confined to the optical landscape tailored by continuous-wave external-light pumping of homogeneous graphene. This result relies on the high electron temperatures achievable in optically pumped clean graphene while its lattice remains near ambient temperature. Our study opens a new avenue toward the active optical control of the nanophotonic response in graphene with potential application in photothermal devices.

Abstract:A thermal diode based on the asymmetric radiative heat transfer between nanoparticles assisted by the nonreciprocal graphene plasmons waveguides is proposed in this work. The thermal diode system consists of two particles and a drift-biased suspended graphene sheet in close proximity of them. Nonreciprocal graphene plasmons are induced by the drift currents in the graphene sheet, and then couple to the waves emitted by the particles in near-field regime. Based on the asymmetry with respect to their propagation direction of graphene plasmons, the thermal rectification between the two particles is observed. The performance of the radiative thermal diode can be actively adjusted through tuning the chemical potential or changing the drift currents in the graphene sheet. With a large drift velocity and a small chemical potential, a perfect radiative thermal diode with a rectification coefficient extremely approaching to 1 can be achieved within a wide range of the interparticle distance from near to far-field. The dispersion relations of the graphene plasmons are adopted to analyze the underlying physics of the rectification effect. In addition, due to the wide band characteristic of the nonreciprocal graphene plasmons, the driftbiased graphene can act as a universal platform for the thermal rectification between particles. The particles with a larger particle resonance frequency are much more preferred to produce a better thermal diode. Abstract:The tunable nonreciprocal radiation for near vertical incident light is investigated. The effect is realized by placing a cascaded one-dimensional graphene and Weyl semimetal (WS) nanowire array on a thick metallic layer. It is observed that perfect absorptivity and emissivity can be realized with different resonant wavelengths, resulting in the achievement of perfect nonreciprocity with an angle of merely 1 o . This effect results from the cavity mode resonance (CMR) excited by the WS array, and it is disclosed through analyzing the amplitude distribution of electromagnetic field. In addition, the perfect nonreciprocal radiation could be maintained within a large geometrical dimension range. Furthermore, it is shown that the perfect spectral nonreciprocity could be dynamically tuned by controlling the axial vector of the WS as well as the Fermi level of graphene. The findings will provide new possibility for developing novel energy capture and conversion structure also with advanced thermal systems.

Abstract:Control over the directionality of thermal emission plays a fundamental role in efficient heat transport. Although nanophotonic technologies have demonstrated the capability for angular‐selective thermal emission, achieving asymmetric directional thermal emission in reciprocal systems with energy directed to a single output angle remains challenging due to symmetric band dispersion. In this work, we present a general strategy for achieving asymmetric directional thermal emission in reciprocal systems. With periodic perturbation and broken mirror symmetry, metasurfaces behave as resonant metagratings whose resonances can be diffracted to symmetric output angles with distinct efficiency, allowing for high emissivity towards a single direction. The asymmetric directional thermal emitter is experimentally demonstrated at mid‐infrared wavelengths with high emissivity (ε = 0.61) at the observation angle of +30°, and low emissivity (ε<0.3) at other angles. This work highlights the potential for manipulating the directionality of thermal emission, which holds promise for developing ultrathin customized thermal sources and impacts on various thermal‐engineering applications. Abstract:Nonreciprocal thermal emission is a cutting-edge technology that enables fundamental control over thermal radiation and has exciting applications in thermal energy harvesting. However, so far one of the foremost challenges is making nonreciprocal emission to operate over a broad wavelength range and for multiple angles. In this work, we solve this outstanding problem by proposing three different types of structures always utilizing only one Weyl semimetal (WSM) thin film combined with one or two additional dielectric or metallic layers and terminated by a metallic substrate. First a tradeoff relationship between the magnitude and bandwidth of the thermal nonreciprocity contrast is established based on the thickness of the WSM film. Then, the bandwidth broadening effect is demonstrated via the insertion of a dielectric spacer layer that can also be fine-tuned by varying its thickness. Finally, further control on the resulting strong nonreciprocal thermal radiation is demonstrated by the addition of a thin metallic layer in the proposed few layer designs. The presented composite structures work for a broad frequency range and multiple emission angles, consisting highly advantageous properties to various nonreciprocal thermal radiation applications. Moreover, the proposed designs do not require any patterning and can be experimentally realized by simple deposition fabrication methods. They are expected to aid in the creation of broadband nonreciprocal thermal emitters that can find applications in new energy harvesting devices.
