Abstract:The intractable brittleness and opacity of the crystalline semiconductor restrict the prospect of developing low-cost imaging systems. Here, infrared visualization technologies are established with large-area, semi-transparent organic upconversion devices that bring high-resolution invisible images into sight without photolithography. To exploit all photoinduced charge carriers, a monolithic device structure is proposed built on the infrared-selective, single-component charge generation layer of chloroaluminum phthalocyanine (ClAlPc) coupled to two visible light-emitting layers manipulated with unipolar charges. Transient pump-probe spectroscopy reveals that the ClAlPc-based device exhibits an efficient charge dissociation process under forward bias. This process is indicated by the prompt and strong features of electroabsorption screening. Furthermore, by imposing the electric field, the ultrafast excited state dynamic suggests a prolonged charge carrier lifetime from the ClAlPc, which facilitates the charge utilization for upconversion luminance. For the first time, >30% of the infrared photons are utilized without photomultiplication strategies owing to the trivial spectrum overlap between ClAlPc and the emitter. In addition, the device can broadcast the acoustic signal by synchronizing the device frequency with the light source, which enables to operate it in dual audio-visual mode. The work demonstrates the potential of upconversion devices for affordable infrared imaging in wearable electronics.

Abstract:Abstract Photon upconversion in lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles offers a wide variety of applications including deep-tissue biophotonics. However, the upconversion luminescence and efficiency, especially involving multiple photons, is still limited by the concentration quenching effect. Here, we demonstrate a multilayered core-shell-shell structure for lanthanide doped NaYF 4 , where Er 3+ activators and Yb 3+ sensitizers are spatially separated, which can enhance the multiphoton emission from Er 3+ by 100-fold compared with the multiphoton emission from canonical core-shell nanocrystals. This difference is due to the excitation energy transfer at the interface between activator core and sensitizer shell being unexpectedly efficient, as revealed by the structural and temperature dependence of the multiphoton upconversion luminescence. Therefore, the concentration quenching is suppressed via alleviation of cross-relaxation between the activator and the sensitizer, resulting in a high quantum yield of up to 6.34% for this layered structure. These findings will enable versatile design of multiphoton upconverting nanoparticles overcoming the conventional limitation.

Abstract:Upconverting infrared light into visible light via the triplet-triplet annihilation process in solid state is important for various applications including photovoltaics, photodetection, and bioimaging. Although inorganic semiconductors with broad absorption and negligible exchange energy loss have emerged as promising alternative to molecular sensitizers, currently, they have exclusively suffered from low efficiency and contained toxic elements in near-infrared (NIR)-to-visible upconversion. Here, we report an ultrathin bilayer film for NIR-to-visible upconversion based on atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) monolayer semiconductors. The atomic flatness and strong light absorption of 2D monolayer semiconductors enable ultrafast energy transfer and robust NIR-to-visible emission with a high upconversion quantum yield (1.1 ± 0.2%) at modest incident power (260 mW cm-2). Increasing layer thickness adversely quenches the upconversion emission, highlighting the 2D advantage. Considering the whole library of 2D semiconductors, the facile large-scale production and the ultrathin solid-state architecture open a new research field for solid-state upconversion applications.

Abstract:Alternating layers of 9,10-bis(4-methylphenyl) anthracene ( diMe-DPA ) and platinum octaethylporphyrin were fabricated via vacuum deposition on an in-plane-oriented polythiophene ( PT ) film. The multilayer film showed higher upconversion (UC) quantum efficiency than bilayer films with similar composition and total thickness. The UC quantum efficiency of the multilayer structure deposited on the oriented PT film was three times higher than those deposited on glass substrates, suggesting that the molecular alignment of diMe-DPA increases the UC quantum efficiency.

Abstract:A donor/acceptor (D/A) heterojunction with an interfacial energetic offset is demonstrated to enable efficient exciton dissociation in organic photodetectors and upconversion devices (UCDs). Unfortunately, this approach usually encounters complicated optimization procedures and interfacial instability. Herein, we present an alternative strategy for achieving high-performing UCDs by utilizing an organic single-component near-infrared (NIR)-sensitive layer instead of a D/A heterojunction. The showcased UCD is constructed by vertically stacking an organic single-component Y6 NIR-detection unit and a quantum dot light-emitting unit. Due to the high dielectric constant and low exciton binding energy of the non-fullerene acceptor Y6, free carriers are directly and spontaneously generated upon NIR light excitation. As a result, the single-component UCD achieves a low light detection capability of 2.5 μW/cm2, a fast refresh rate of >3.8 × 104, and a high resolution exceeding 1100 dpi, providing a stable optical response to high-frequency NIR signals and high-quality NIR imaging.

Abstract:The optical and xerographic properties of the phthalocyanine codeposited composite (cDC) films and ultrathin multilayered (UTML) structures have been studied. Observed UV-visible absorption spectra indicate that the Q-band absorption of the cDc films is different from that of the single component films, and from that of the UTML structures. The absorption peaks are shifted with the number and thickness of the layers. This spectral variation is most likely to be due to the dipole–dipole and charge transfer interactions among different molecular assemblies. The photosensitivity of the cDC films is superior to that of the single component films. This improvement is attributed to the efficient photoinduced charge transfer and charge separation among the composites. Moreover, the photosensitivity of the UTML structures is over tenfold better than that of the cDC films, probably due to the ultrafast photoinduced charge transfer and separation and the unipolar transport of the photogenerated holes.

Abstract:Abstract Manipulating topological arrangement is a powerful tool for tuning energy migration in natural photosynthetic proteins and artificial polymers. Here, we report an inorganic optical nanosystem composed of NaErF 4 and NaYbF 4 , in which topological arrangement enhanced upconversion luminescence. Three architectures are designed for considerations pertaining to energy migration and energy transfer within nanoparticles: outside-in, inside-out, and local energy transfer. The outside-in architecture produces the maximum upconversion luminescence, around 6-times brighter than that of the inside-out at the single-particle level. Monte Carlo simulation suggests a topology-dependent energy migration favoring the upconversion luminescence of outside-in structure. The optimized outside-in structure shows more than an order of magnitude enhancement of upconversion brightness compared to the conventional core-shell structure at the single-particle level and is used for long-term single-particle tracking in living cells. Our findings enable rational nanoprobe engineering for single-molecule imaging and also reveal counter-intuitive relationships between upconversion nanoparticle structure and optical properties.

Abstract:In the study, we present the significant enhancement of the upconversion luminescence by taking advantage of long-range surface plasmon resonance mode. Compared with the reflection enhanced upconversion luminescence of Ag film, the intensity of upconversion luminescence enhanced by long-range surface plasmon resonance mode is improved 100 times. Additionally, the finite-difference time-domain simulation indicates that the incident light energy can concentrate in the upconversion nanoparticles doped dielectric layer at the long-range surface plasmon resonance mode, which the maximum electric field enhancement factor |E|2/|E0|2 can reach to 58. The experimental result shows that the upconversion luminescence enhancement is related to the thickness of doped Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) layer. Furthermore, due to the excited upconversion luminescence having high directionality, it is shown that the strong upconversion luminescence could be received at the specific angle.

Abstract:Hybrid structures formed between organic molecules and inorganic quantum dots can accomplish unique photophysical transformations by taking advantage of their disparate properties. The electronic coupling between these materials is typically weak, leading photoexcited charge carriers to spatially localize to a dot or a molecule at its surface. However, we show that by converting a chemical linker that covalently binds anthracene molecules to silicon quantum dots from a carbon-carbon single bond to a double bond, we access a strong-coupling regime where excited carriers spatially delocalize across both anthracene and silicon. By pushing the system to delocalize, we design a photon upconversion system with a higher efficiency (17.2%) and lower threshold intensity (0.5 W/cm^2) than that of a corresponding weakly-coupled system. Our results show that strong coupling between molecules and nanostructures achieved through targeted linking chemistry provides a new route for tailoring properties in materials for light-driven applications.

Abstract:Selectively blocking undesirable exciton transfer pathways is crucial for utilizing exciton conversion processes that involve participation of multiple chromophores. This is particularly challenging for solid-state systems, where the chromophores are fixed in close proximity. For instance, the low efficiency of solid-state triplet-triplet upconversion calls for inhibiting the parasitic singlet back-transfer without blocking the flow of triplet excitons. Here, we present a reticular chemistry strategy that inhibits the resonance energy transfer of singlet excitons. Within a pillared layer metal-organic framework (MOF), pyrene-based singlet donors are situated perpendicular to porphyrin-based acceptors. High resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction enable direct visualization of the structural relationship between donor and acceptor (D-A) chromophores within the MOF. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements reveal that the structural and symmetry features of the MOF reduce the donor-to-acceptor singlet transfer efficiency to less than 36% compared to around 96% in the control sample, where the relative orientation of the donor and acceptor chromophores cannot be controlled.

Abstract:We present a double-layer dielectric metasurface obtained by stacking a silicon nanodisk array and a silicon photonic crystal slab with equal periodicity on top of each other. We focus on the investigation of electric near-field enhancement effects occurring at resonant excitation of the metasurface and study its optical properties numerically and experimentally. We find that the major difference in multi-layer metasurfaces when compared to conventional single-layer structures appears to be in Rayleigh–Wood anomalies: they are split into multiple different modes, which are themselves spectrally broadened. As a proof of concept, we cover a double-layer metasurface with a lanthanide-doped up-conversion particle layer and study its interaction with a 1550 nm photoexcitation. We observe a 2.7-fold enhanced up-conversion photoluminescence by using the stacked metasurface instead of a planar substrate, although only around 1% of the up-conversion material is exposed to enhanced near fields. Two mechanisms are identified explaining this behavior: First, enhanced near fields when exciting the metasurface resonantly, and second, light trapping by total internal reflection in the particle layer when the metasurface redirects light into high angle diffraction orders. These results pave the way for low-threshold and, in particular, broadband photon up-conversion in future solar energy and biosensing applications.

Abstract:The optical upconversion of infrared light to visible light has been achieved in photosensitizer-doped organic light-emitting diodes, where poly(N-vinylcarbazole) doped with infrared photosensitizer of 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenylidene)malonitrile was used as hole-transporting layer, and tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum acted as both emitting and electron-transporting layers. Both electroluminescent intensity and current were enhanced under infrared illumination. The enhancement ratio was obtained as 2.45 times for electroluminescent emission and 1.45 times for current. This work brought forth a prototype design for novel flexible organic optical upconversion device used in near infrared field.

Abstract:High brightness of upconversion luminescence (UCL) for a thinner layer of UC nanoparticles is significant for routine applications of effective trademark anticounterfeiting technology. In this work, efficient UCL of NaYF:Yb,Er/Tm was realized by combining a TaO dielectric layer on the cyclical island silver films supported by poly(methyl methacrylate) opal photonic crystals (PCs). The synergistic modulation of localized surface plasmon resonance and PC effect results in a significant improvement of the local electromagnetic field and an optimum UC enhancement of 145 folds. Furthermore, colorful pattern nanoprinting has been applied to this composite and used for trademark anticounterfeiting. The combination of angle-dependent PC effect and infrared-to-visible UCL represents a more advanced anticounterfeiting technique.

Abstract:Lead halide-based perovskite thin films have attracted great attention due to the rapid increase in perovskite solar cell efficiencies. The same optoelectronic properties that make perovskites ideal absorber materials in solar cells are also beneficial in other light-harvesting applications and make them prime candidates as triplet sensitizers in upconversion via triplet–triplet annihilation in rubrene. In this contribution, we take advantage of long carrier lifetimes and carrier diffusion lengths in perovskite thin films, their high absorption cross-sections throughout the visible spectrum, and the strong spin–orbit coupling owing to the abundance of heavy atoms to sensitize the upconverter rubrene. Employing bulk perovskite thin films as the absorber layer and spin-mixer in inorganic/organic heterojunction upconversion devices allows us to forego the passivating ligands required for colloidal sensitizers, which can hinder exciton transport through large scale arrays and reduce the triplet transfer efficiency to the annihilator. Our bilayer device exhibits an upconversion efficiency in excess of 3% under 785 nm illumination at an incident power of ∼88 W/cm2.

Abstract:Here, we investigated the structure and upconversion (UC) properties of new-type of single oxide nanosheets, derived from the Er3+/Yb3+ and Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped Ruddlesden-Popper type layered perovskites, and their layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembled nanofilms. The single oxide nanosheets, obtained by exfoliation of the proton-exchanged K2La2Ti3O10, had the thickness in the range of 2–3 nm indicating good consistency with the theoretical thickness and lateral size from 500 nm up to 2 μm. Er3+/Yb3+, Tm3+/Yb3+ and Tm3+/Er3+co-doped nanosheets were used as building blocks of the multilayer films deposited by layer-by-layer procedure. The LBL films composed of 2.5 % Er3+ + 5 % Yb3+, 2.5 % Tm3+ + 20 % Yb3+, 2.5 % Tm3+ + 20 % Er3+ after 60 sequences have shown a white emission confirmed by the CIE chromaticity diagram. The possible UC energy transfer of LBL films fabricated after 30 sequences using the nanosheets derived from the 2.5 % Er3+ + 5 % Yb3+ co-doped layered perovskites was also suggested. The number of photons participating in the UC process was confirmed as two-photon for both green and red UC emissions due to the 4F9/2 →4I15/2 and 2H11/2, 4S3/2→ 4I15/2 transitions, respectively.

Abstract:The ability to upconvert two low energy photons into one high energy photon has potential applications in solar energy, biological imaging, and data storage. In this Letter, CdSe and PbSe semiconductor nanocrystals are combined with molecular emitters (diphenylanthracene and rubrene) to upconvert photons in both the visible and the near-infrared spectral regions. Absorption of low energy photons by the nanocrystals is followed by energy transfer to the molecular triplet states, which then undergo triplet triplet annihilation to create high energy singlet states that emit upconverted light. By using conjugated organic ligands on the CdSe nanocrystals to form an energy cascade, the upconversion process could be enhanced by up to 3 orders of magnitude. The use of different combinations of nanocrystals and emitters shows that this platform has great flexibility in the choice of both excitation and emission wavelengths.

Abstract:The enhancement of Er$^{3+}$-based up-conversion for photovoltaics in multilayer porous silicon photonic structures is considered theoretically and experimentally. Transfer matrix simulations are used to assess the increased photonic density of states that results from the slowing of energy propagation at the short-wavelength edge of one-dimensional photonic band gaps. An indirect calculation of Er$^{3+}$ absorption enhancement within slow-light modes is then used to illustrate an increase in absorption over the bulk value: the effective absorption coefficient is shown to increase by more than 22% over a broad spectral region and by more than 400% over a narrow region. Erbium-doped porous silicon photonic crystals are fabricated with the photonic band edge coincident with the $^{4}I_{15/2} \rightarrow^{4}I_{13/2}$ Er$^{3+}$ transition. Challenges in fabrication and the results of compositional analysis are discussed. An angular-dependent photoluminescence measurement demonstrates emission intensity that varies non-monotonically with the position of the photonic band edge. A maximum of 26.6$\times$ enhancement of Er$^{3+}$ emission intensity is observed for the 550-nm transition, with lower enhancement factors seen for longer wavelengths.
