Abstract:Topological valley photonics provides a unique way to manipulate the flow of light. In general, valley edge states that exhibit unidirectional propagation and are immune to defects and disorders could be realized at the interface between two valley photonic crystals with opposite valley Chern numbers. Herein, by merging the physics of valley edge states and bound states in the continuum, we propose and numerically demonstrate a novel, to the best of our knowledge, concept of edge states termed bound valley edge states in the continuum, which enjoys the topological features of valley edge states, such as, unidirectional propagation and immunity to disorders, but are formed at the interface between air and a single valley photonic crystal. Our results not only provide an effective way to reduce the size of valley photonic structures but also facilitate new applications where the proposed concept of bound valley edge states in the continuum could be exploited for optical sensing and unidirectional waveguiding.
Second-harmonic Generation Via Double Topological Valley-Hall Kink Modes in All-Dielectric Photonic Crystals

Abstract:Nonlinear topological photonics, which explores topics common to the fields of topological phases and nonlinear optics, is expected to open up a new paradigm in topological photonics. Here, we demonstrate second-harmonic generation (SHG) via nonlinear interaction of double topological valley-Hall kink modes in all-dielectric photonic crystals (PhCs). We first show that two topological frequency band gaps can be created around a pair of frequencies, omega(0) and 2(omega 0), by gapping out the corresponding Dirac points in two-dimensional honeycomb PhCs. Valley-Hall kink modes along a kink-type domain wall interface between two PhCs placed together in a mirror-symmetric manner are generated within the two frequency band gaps. Importantly, through full-wave simulations and mode dispersion analysis, we demonstrate that tunable, bidirectional phase-matched SHG via nonlinear interaction of the valley-Hall kink modes inside the two band gaps can be achieved. In particular, by using Stokes parameters associated with the magnetic part of the valley-Hall kink modes, we introduce the concept of SHG directional dichroism, which is employed to characterize optical probes for sensing chiral molecules. Our work opens up avenues toward topologically protected nonlinear frequency mixing and active photonic devices implemented in all-dielectric material platforms.
Coexistence of Pseudospin- and Valley-Hall-like Edge States in a Photonic Crystal with C3v Symmetry

Abstract:We demonstrate the coexistence of pseudospin- and valley-Hall-like edge states in a photonic crystal with C-3v symmetry, which is composed of three interlacing triangular sublattices with the same lattice constants. By tuning the geometry of the sublattices, three complete photonic band gaps with nontrivial topology can be created, one of which is due to the band inversion associated with the pseudospin degree of freedom at the Gamma point and the other two due to the gapping out of Dirac cones associated with the valley degree of freedom at the K, K' points. The system can support triband pseudospin- and valley-momentum locking edge states at properly designed domain-wall interfaces. Furthermore, to demonstrate the novel interplay of the two kinds of edge states in a single configuration, we design a four-channel system, where the unidirectional routing of electromagnetic waves against sharp bends between two routes can be selectively controlled by the pseudospin and valley degrees of freedom. Our work combines the pseudospin and valley degrees of freedom in a single configuration and may provide more flexibility in manipulating electromagnetic waves with promising potential for multiband and multifunctional applications.

Abstract:Valley-Hall photonic topological insulators (VPTIs) provide an intriguing approach to suppress backscattering, enhance the robustness of transport, and shrink the footprints of the topological devices. However, previous works focused on the transmission characteristics of the symmetric topological waveguides with few reports on functional devices involving edge mode coupling, which hinders the implementation of various functional devices such as optical couplers/splitters, switches, filters, and etc. In this paper, a new method to manipulate the mode field distributions in topological waveguides is demonstrated by introducing asymmetric edge states, thus the mode coupling with an arbitrary coupling ratio can be achieved between topological waveguides. As an example, a topological power splitter with a 33:67 splitting ratio is demonstrated experimentally. In addition, to verify the robust transmission property of the topological photonic devices, a high-speed data transmission experiment for a topological power splitter is performed and a high data rate of 128 Gb s(-1) is achieved. These results promise a new method to manipulate the mode field distribution in topological waveguides and devices that may find wide applications in diverse fields such as optical communications, nanophotonics, and quantum information processing.
Manipulation of topological valley kink states in an ultrathin substrate-integrated photonic circuitry

Abstract:Valley degrees of freedom, providing a novel way to increase the capacity and efficiency for information storage and processing, become an important instrumental for future photonics. However, due to the inter-valley scattering, current realizations of the topological valley kink states are restricted to zigzag boundaries, strongly limiting the development and applications of valley photonics. Besides, the previous topological photonic crystals suffer from either large thickness or insufficient electromagnetic shielding, leading to incompatibility with the standard integrated waveguide circuits. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the realization, engineering and manipulation of valley-polarized topological kink states at generic boundaries in an ultrathin substrate-integrated photonic circuitry with nearly negligible inter-valley scattering. Valley-resolved topological kink states are manipulated by tailoring the boundary geometry between two photonic crystals of opposite valley Hall effects, yielding tunable edge spectrum yet robust valley-polarized transport. Such salient properties can be exploited to design functional substrate-integrated photonic devices, such as disorder-immune waveguides with high transmission, robust photonic delay line, and geometry-dependent topological channel intersections. Our systematic study provides a new route for the manipulation of valley degrees of freedom in the substrate-integrated circuitry, and may work as a novel integration platform for information processing with disorder-insensitivity, easy access, and light weight.

Abstract:Topological quantum optics that manipulates the topological protection of quantum states has attracted special interests in recent years. Here we demonstrate valley photonic crystals implementing topologically protected transport of the continuous frequency entangled biphoton states. We numerically simulate the nonlinear four-wave mixing interaction of topological valley kink states propagating along the interface between two valley photonic crystals. We theoretically clarify that the signal and idler photons generated from the four-wave mixing interaction are continuous frequency entangled. The numerical simulation results imply that the entangled biphoton states are robust against the sharp bends and scattering, giving clear evidence of topological protection of entangled photon pairs. Our proposal paves a concrete way to perform topological protection of entangled quantum states operating at telecommunication wavelengths.

Abstract:A photonic crystal can realize an analogue of a valley Hall insulator, promising more flexibility than in condensed-matter systems to explore these exotic topological states. Recently discovered1,2 valley photonic crystals (VPCs) mimic many of the unusual properties of two-dimensional (2D) gapped valleytronic materials3,4,5,6,7,8,9. Of the utmost interest to optical communications is their ability to support topologically protected chiral edge (kink) states3,4,5,6,7,8,9 at the internal domain wall between two VPCs with opposite valley-Chern indices. Here we experimentally demonstrate valley-polarized kink states with polarization multiplexing in VPCs, designed from a spin-compatible four-band model. When the valley pseudospin is conserved, we show that the kink states exhibit nearly perfect out-coupling efficiency into directional beams, through the intersection between the internal domain wall and the external edge separating the VPCs from ambient space. The out-coupling behaviour remains topologically protected even when we break the spin-like polarization degree of freedom (DOF), by introducing an effective spin–orbit coupling in one of the VPC domains. This also constitutes the first realization of spin–valley locking for topological valley transport.
Tailored Triggering of High-Quality Multi-Dimensional Coupled Topological States in Valley Photonic Crystals

Abstract:The combination of higher-order topological insulators and valley photonic crystals has recently aroused extensive attentions due to the great potential in flexible and efficient optical field manipulations. Here, we computationally propose a photonic device for the 1550 nm communication band, in which the topologically protected electromagnetic modes with high quality can be selectively triggered and modulated on demand. Through introducing two valley photonic crystal units without any structural alteration, we successfully achieve multi-dimensional coupled topological states thanks to the diverse electromagnetic characteristics of two valley edge states. According to the simulations, the constructed topological photonic devices can realize Fano lines on the spectrum and show high-quality localized modes by tuning the coupling strength between the zero-dimensional valley corner states and the one-dimensional valley edge states. Furthermore, we extend the valley-locked properties of edge states to higher-order valley topological insulators, where the selected corner states can be directionally excited by chiral source. More interestingly, we find that the modulation of multi-dimensional coupled photonic topological states with pseudospin dependence become more efficient compared with those uncoupled modes. This work presents a valuable approach for multi-dimensional optical field manipulation, which may support potential applications in on-chip integrated nanophotonic devices.
Topological Refraction in Dual-Band Valley Sonic Crystals

Abstract:Valley pseudospins, as quantum states of energy extrema in momentum space, have been introduced from condensed-matter systems into classical sound systems, and several valley sonic crystals (VSCs) have been realized experimentally. However, in the existing VSCs, topological kink states generally appear in a single band gap, which apparently has become an obstacle for multiband topological sound devices. To overcome this challenge, we here experimentally demonstrate dual-band VSCs, in which robust valley kink states exist in two separated bulk band gaps. More interestingly, two opposite valleys separately located in two band gaps are locked to a single propagation direction, which arises from the fact that the bands below two band gaps show opposite valley Chern numbers at the K/K' valley. This double valley-locking phenomenon has been demonstrated via measuring the topological refraction of the kink states into the ambient space at a zigzag termination. We observe positive refraction at the lower band gap, whereas the coexistence of positive and negative refraction at the higher band gap. Additionally, we observe the robust valley transport through the sharp corners at two band gaps. The designed VSCs with the dual-band topological refraction and robust valley transport could find potential applications in multiband and multidirectional devices.

Abstract:Topological photonics has been introduced as a powerful platform for integrated optics, since it can deal with robust light transport, and be further extended to the quantum world. Strikingly, valley-contrasting physics in topological photonic structures contributes to valley-related edge states, their unidirectional coupling, and even valley-dependent wave division in topological junctions. Here, we design and fabricate nanophotonic topological harpoon-shaped beam splitters (HSBSs) based on 120-deg-bending interfaces and demonstrate the first on-chip valley-dependent quantum information process. Two-photon quantum interference, namely, Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with a high visibility of 0.956±0.006, is realized with our 50/50 HSBS, which is constructed by two topologically distinct domain walls. Cascading this kind of HSBS together, we also demonstrate a simple quantum photonic circuit and generation of a path-entangled state. Our work shows that the photonic valley state can be used in quantum information processing, and it is possible to realize more complex quantum circuits with valley-dependent photonic topological insulators, which provides a novel method for on-chip quantum information processing.

Abstract:Valley degrees of freedom, providing a novel way to increase capacity and efficiency of information processing, have become an important instrument for photonics. Experimental studies on photonic topological valley kink states at interfaces between regions with opposite valley-Chern numbers have attracted much attention, however, were restricted to zigzag-type interfaces, largely limiting their applications such as geometry-dependent topological channel intersections. Here, we experimentally demonstrate and manipulate valley kink states at generic interfaces in subwavelength substrate-integrated photonic circuitry. We verify the robustness of the kink states by measuring transmissions of the kink states through twisted interfaces and interfaces with disorders. Based on the valley kink states at generic interfaces, we realize several topological channel intersections where photonic transport paths are related to geometries of the intersections. In comparison to those in previous works, the present valley photonic crystals have subwavelength thicknesses and excellent self-consistent electrical shielding, which are perfectly compatible with conventional substrate-integrated photonic circuitry. Our work opens a door to manipulate photonic valley pseudo-spins in substrate-integrated circuitry with robustness, easy access, and lightweight.

Abstract:Valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states, whose topologically protected properties have great application potential in high-speed information processing and communication, have recently become important frontiers in topological photonics. However, valley photonic topological insulators mainly support single-type topological states through breaking lattice spatial symmetry. It remains difficult for different types of topological states to coexist in a specific photonic system. In this paper, we propose judiciously designed substrate-integrated topological photonic crystals (but without metal vias) with C3 symmetry that can support valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states in different waveguide channels. Via numerical simulations and measurements, we demonstrate the robust transmission of both valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states through sharp corners and we show high-efficiency coupling between classical guided waves and topological waves. More importantly, we achieve smooth transitions between chiral and trivial edge states, trivial edge states and valley kink states, as well as valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states by bridging different waveguide channels. Abstract:Topologically protected photonic edge states allow backscattering-free and disorder-immune light propagations, offering a new scheme for the development of on-chip information systems. Valley degree of freedom is one of the most reliable way to achieve topologically non-trivial states. Here, we take advantage of heterogeneous topological interfaces to construct integrated optical devices in the valley-dependent photonic crystals. Localized Berry curvature around the KK point guarantees the existence of valley kink states at telecom wavelengths below the light cone, ensuring both optical robustness and light confinement. We harness the combination of two kinds of bearded interfaces to realize wavelength-selective topological routing of light in the micro-ring resonators. The proposed bearded interfaces can support edge modes with large group indices up to 90, showing a great potential to obtain remarkable slow light effects. This work paves the way to implement optical buffers and reconfigurable photonic devices with the adoption of photonic valley pseudospin.

Abstract:Topological photonic valley-Hall states, regarded as an excellent information carrier, have attracted a great attention in recent years due to binary degree of freedom (DOF) of valley states. In order to enhance and promote miniaturization and functionalization of integrated photonic devices using the valley DOF, researchers have performed a plethora of wok in both theory and experiment recently. In this work, we theoretically propose a kind of all-dielectric valley photonic crystals (VPCs) with triangular lattice composed of silicon rods, and systematically analyze and investigate two different domain interfaces (bearded-stack and zigzag-stack) constructed by the VPCs with opposite valley Chern numbers. Topological valley-Hall states, such as valley-polarized kink states and slow light states, are demonstrated and realized in the two domain interfaces, such as valley-polarized kink states in the low gap and slow light states in the high gap for the bearded-stack, and valley-polarized dual-band kink states and slow light states in the high gap for the zigzag-stack. Both the slow light states and the valley-polarized kink states have their own merits in the zigzag and bearded interfaces, respectively, e.g., valley-polarized dual-band kink states with broadband and high-energy-density light filed in the zigzag-stack, and slow light states with group-dispersionless and large group index in the bearded-stack. Additionally, the waveguide interfaces could be arbitrarily shifted by sliding and translating half lattice constant along X axis. Hence they can be easily manipulated and automatically controlled by external coding in practice application. Finally, our work provides a novel platform for applications in topological on-chip photonic devices with multifunction and specific light fields with field enhancement and high-energy-density transport.

Abstract:Topological photonics has emerged as a promising field in photonics that is able to shape the science and technology of light. As a significant degree of freedom, valley is introduced to design and construct photonic topological phases, with encouraging recent progress in applications ranging from on‐chip communications to terahertz lasers. Herein, the development of topological valley photonics is reviewed, from both perspectives of fundamental physics and practical applications. The unique valley‐contrasting physics determines that the bulk topology and the bulk‐boundary correspondence in valley photonic topological phases exhibit different properties from other photonic topological phases. Valley conservation allows not only robust propagation of light through sharp corners, but also 100% out‐coupling of topological states to the surrounding environment. Finally, robust valley transport requires no magnetic materials or the complex construction of photonic pseudospin and, thus, can be integrated on compact photonic platforms for future technologies.

Abstract:Higher-order topological insulators have drawn great research attention in nanophotonics due to their ability to both support robust edge states and lower dimensional corner states. In this work, we present a theoretical proposal for achieving topologically switchable and valley-selective corner states based on two-dimensional C3-symmetric photonic crystals (PCs), with breaking of inversion symmetry. Through the concatenation of two valley PCs with contrasting topological indices, we demonstrate the emergence of two types of valley-locked chiral topological edge states resulting from the valley–valley interaction. More importantly, we find that the system exhibits two distinct types of corner states, characterized by strong robustness and high localization, when the PCs are spliced at a 60° angle. However, the corner states are absent when the splicing angle is set as 120°. According to the theoretical analysis, the selective activation of topological valley corner states is related to the sign flip of valley Chern number at the corner. Based on this feature, we further propose a topological photonic switching device, in which the corner can be lighted up or off selectively. By combining the benefits of higher-order topology and valley degree of freedom, our work provides an efficient and flexible method for light manipulation.

Abstract:Spectral tunable technology has to meet the requirements of strong robustness and wide spectral range. We propose a method for the transmission and manipulation of infrared topological photonic crystal valley states based on tunable refractive index method that exhibits broad-spectrum and multi-band characteristics, along with a tunable emission angle. With this structure, different rotational directions of vortex light sources can independently excite the K valley and K′ valley within the frequency band ranging from 75.64 THz to 99.61 THz. At frequencies from 142.60 THz to 171.12 THz, it is possible to simultaneously excite both the K valley and K′ valley. The dual refractive index tunable design allows for the adjustment of the emission angle at a fixed frequency, enabling control over the independent excitation of either a single K valley or K′ valley, as well as their simultaneous excitation. This capability has significant implications for photonic computation and tunable filtering, offering enhanced operational flexibility and expanded functionality for future optical communications and integrated optical circuits.
