Abstract:In this work we give a theoretical investigation on the near-field heat transfer between two graphene-hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructures. We found that the phonon-plasmon hybrid modes supported by the heterostructure could broaden the frequency and wavevector ranges for near-field photon transfer and lead to a rather high near-field heat transfer efficiency that is far stronger than the usual Planckian radiation by several orders. The tunability of the Fermi level of graphene provides an advantage to actively mediate or control the heat transfer process, which may find important applications such as thermal management or thermal modulation.

Abstract:The surface plasmon polaritons of graphene coupled with hyperbolic phonon polaritons of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have been considered as the ideal platform to enhance thermal emitter, which provides a powerful tool to implement energy conversion and thermal management. The conventional approaches for the strong plasmon − phonon coupling rely on the bulk hBN materials, which usually have a large footprint and display little tunability. Recently, hBN atomic emitter has been demonstrated that its peak emissivity is hopefully as high as the bulk hBN emitters. Here, we propose a graphene/hBN thermal emitter atomic system to flexibly modify the spectral emissivity by the strong plasmon − phonon coupling effect, which can be separately manipulated by the graphene width, chemical potential of graphene, number of hBN atomic layers and hBN width. Our scheme is hopefully realizing a comparable function with the bulk graphene/hBN system. Furthermore, we employ coupled oscillator model involving three oscillators to investigate the energy exchange, mode evolution between three plasmon − phonon hybridized modes, providing an excellent agreement with simulated and theoretical results. Consequently, optically manipulating plasmon − phonon interaction opens a broad design space for the spectral emissivity control, which explores the mid-infrared applications of advanced graphene thermo-optoelectronics and electrically driven thermal emitters.

Abstract:Polar dielectrics are important optical materials enabling the subwavelength manipulation of light in infrared due to their capability to excite phonon polaritons.In practice,it is highly desired to actively modify these hyperbolic phonon polaritons（HPPs） to optimize or tune the response of the device.In this work,we investigate the plasmonic material,a monolayer graphene,and study its hybrid structure with three kinds of hyperbolic thin films grown on SiO 2 substrate.The inter-mode hybridization and their tunability have been thoroughly clarified from both the band dispersions and the mode patterns numerically calculated through a transfer matrix method.Our results show that these hybrid multilayer structures are of strong potentials for applications in plasmonic waveguides,modulators and detectors in infrared.

Abstract:Near-field radiative heat transfer between closely placed objects may exceed the far-field black-body radiation limit by orders of magnitude, especially between polaritonic materials. Great efforts have been made to experimentally measure this fundamental effect in various systems. In this work, we manage to experimentally characterize the near-field thermal emission between less explored plasmon-phonon hybrid material systems made of a graphene-SiC heterostructure. The experiment is carried out using a custom-designed all-optical measurement setup. A heat flux enhancement factor of 26 over the black-body radiation limit is obtained at a 150-nm vacuum gap. Three fundamental modes, i.e., surface plasmon and phonon polaritons with frustrated modes, are identified to contribute the near-field heat flux in this hybrid system. The measured results are well reproduced from the analytical calculations, indicating the robustness of the measurement. Deeper experimental explorations for near-field heat transfer between more complicated material systems could be encouraged in the future.

Abstract:Near-field radiation heat transfer (NFRHT) in two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) monolayer and its composite symmetric-based structure was investigated. Contrary to three-dimensional (3D) materials, the splitting of modes (in 2D materials) into the longitudinal optical (LO) and transverse optical (TO) phononic modes disappears at the Γ-point even in some polar materials. The conductivity of atomic thin hBN monolayer depends on the LO phonon frequency under the long wavelength limit. Exploiting such concept, the electromagnetic local density of states (EM-LDOS) accounting for the near-field radiation spectrum was evaluated in free-space close to an interface with the hBN monolayer as well as composite structures. An intense narrow peak of LDOS was found in the case of hBN monolayer caused by the surface phonon polariton (SPhP) resonance. This peak was modified in the case of hBN-graphene composite due to hybridization, which strongly depends on two factors – the distance of observer (in vacuum) from interface and graphene Fermi energy. It was found that the flux density between monolayer hBN gets 2.8-fold enhanced as compared to the monolayer graphene configuration under 0.11 eV Fermi energy applied at a vacuum gap of 15 nm. The possibility of tuning Fermi energy has great potentials in designing thermally controlled devices.

Abstract:Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) has taken the spotlight in the condensed matter community since the discovery of correlated phases. In this work, we study heterostructures of TBG and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) using an atomistic tight-binding model together with semi-classical molecular dynamics to consider relaxation effects. The hBN substrate has significant effects on the band structure of TBG even in the case where TBG and hBN are not aligned. Specifically, the substrate induces a large mass gap and strong pseudo-magnetic fields that break the layer degeneracy. Interestingly, such degeneracy can be recovered with a second hBN layer. Finally, we develop a continuum model that describes the tight-binding band structure. Our results show that a real-space tight-binding model in combination with semi-classical molecular dynamics is a powerful tool to study the electronic properties of moiré heterostructures, and to explain experimental results in which the effect of the substrate plays an important role.

Abstract:Graphene-covered hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) can exceed blackbody thermal radiation in near-field due to the coupling of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPPs). As previous research found that the thickness of hBN in a graphene-hBN cell can be very thin while still presenting strong radiation enhancement, multilayer graphene-hBN heterostructures are proposed in this paper to further enhance the near-field thermal radiation. We found that a heterostructure consisting of five or more graphene-hBN cells performs better than all existing graphene-hBN configurations, and the infinite cell limit exhibits 1.87- and 2.94-fold larger heat flux at 10 nm separation than sandwich and monocell structures do, respectively, due to the continuously and perfectly coupled modes. The heat flux is found to be 4 orders of magnitude larger than that of the blackbody. The effective tunability of the thermal radiation of the multicell structure is also observed by adjusting the chemical potentials of graphene with an optimized thickness of 20 nm on each hBN, which is instructive for both experimental design and fabrication of thermal radiation devices.

Abstract:We study the radiative heat transfer between multilayer structures made by a periodic repetition of a graphene sheet and a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) slab. Surface plasmons in a monolayer graphene can couple with a hyperbolic phonon polaritons in a single hBN film to form hybrid polaritons that can assist photon tunneling. For periodic multilayer graphene/hBN structures, the stacked metallic/dielectric array can give rise to a further effective hyperbolic behavior, in addition to the intrinsic natural hyperbolic behavior of hBN. The effective hyperbolicity can enable more hyperbolic polaritons that enhance the photon tunneling and hence the near-field heat transfer. However, the hybrid polaritons on the surface, i.e. surface plasmon-phonon polaritons, dominate the near-field heat transfer between multilayer structures when the topmost layer is graphene. The effective hyperbolic regions can be well predicted by the effective medium theory (EMT), thought EMT fails to capture the hybrid surface polaritons and results in a heat transfer rate much lower compared to the exact calculation. The chemical potential of the graphene sheets can be tuned through electrical gating and results in an additional modulation of the heat transfer. We found that the near-field heat transfer between multilayer structure does not increase monotonously with the number of layer in the stack, which provides a way to control the heat transfer rate by the number of graphene layers in the multilayer structure. The results may benefit the applications of near-field energy harvesting and radiative cooling based on hybrid polaritons in two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:We propose a graphene-based plasmonic heterostructure in which a new class of plasmon polariton modes can be realized via fundamental coupling of conventional graphene plasmons (GPs) and spoof surface plasmons or radiation modes. We name these electromagnetic modes coupled graphene plasmon polaritons (CGPPs). It is found that the properties of the CGPPs can be tuned by the geometry of the heterostructure, the material used to fill the holes, and the electron density in graphene. Most interestingly, we show that it is possible to achieve CGPPs with about 10 times enhancement of wave localization or about 300 times enhancement of propagation length, compared to usual GPs through varying device parameters. These features can be applied to tunable terahertz and infrared plasmonic devices.

Abstract:Near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between multilayer graphene/hBN heterostructures has been demonstrated to exceed the blackbody limit due to the coupling mechanism of surface plasmon polaritons and hyperbolic phonon polaritons, opening the door to applications in thermal management, thermophotovoltaics, and nanoscale metrology. Recent studies have shown that adding vacuum layers within multilayer structures can effectively promote surface modes and thus enhance NFRHT. However, the influence of vacuum layers on NFRHT between multilayer graphene/hBN heterostructures has not been investigated. Moreover, the influence of vacuum layers on coupled resonance modes excited in multilayer structures is worth discussing. In this work, we study the NFRHT based on multilayer graphene/vacuum/hBN/vacuum structures. The results show that as the gap distance increases from 20 nm to 100 nm, the NFRHT of three-cell and six-cell configurations is enhanced, while that of unit-cell configuration is suppressed. The potential mechanism can be identified as the excitation of surface plasmon-phonon polaritons (SPPPs) and hyperbolic plasmon-phonon polaritons (HPPPs) in multilayer structures. The enhancement factor of the six-cell configurations is up to 4.82 when the gap distance is 80 nm. Moreover, the influences of the chemical potential of graphene and the layer thickness on the NFRHT are discussed. The interesting results in this work indicate the perspectives for future near-field research involving coupling of SPPPs and HPPPs, and shed new light on high-performance devices introducing vacuum layers based on near-field radiative heat transfer.

Coupling Between Hyperbolic Phonon Polaritons Excited in Two Ultrathin Hbn Sheets

Abstract:In this work, the hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPPs) in ultrathin hBN sheets are numerically studied. The dispersion relation and distribution of electric field are calculated to confirm the excitation of HPPs. Besides, the coupling effect between HPPs of two ultrathin hBN sheets are investigated. When the distance between two hBN sheets are smaller than the propagation length of the HPPs in the air, the HPPs can be strongly coupled. Therefore, the photon tunneling probability can be greatly enhanced. The split of the HPPs is similar to that of the surface waves, and such phenomenon is well explained in this work. We believe that this work will deepen our understanding of the HPPs in ultrathin hyperbolic materials. In addition, the knowledge about the HPPs will help us understand the near-field radiative heat transfer between hyperbolic materials.
Enhancing Thermal Radiation by Graphene-Assisted Hbn/sio2 Hybrid Structures at the Nanoscale.

Abstract:A graphene-assisted hBN/SiO2 hybrid structure is proposed and demonstrated to enhance near-field thermal radiation (NFTR). Due to the complementarity between the hyperbolic phonon polaritons of hBN and the surface phonon polaritons of SiO2 at mid-infrared frequencies, coupling modes can remarkably improve the photon tunneling probability over a broad frequency band, especially when assisted by the surface plasmon polaritons of graphene sheets. Thus, the heat flux can exceed the blackbody limit by 4 orders of magnitude at a separation distance of 10 nm and reach 97% of the infinite limit of graphene-hBN multilayers using only two layers with a thickness of 20 nm each. The first graphene layer controls most of the heat flux, while the other layers can be used to regulate and optimize. The dynamic relationship between the chemical potential μ and the gap distance d are thoroughly discussed. Optimal heat flux of our graphene-assisted hBN/SiO2 hybrid structure with proper choices of (μ1, μ2, μ3) for different d (from 10 nm to 1000 nm) is further increased by 28.2% on average in comparison with the existing graphene-hBN triple-layer structure.

Abstract:Near-field radiative heat transfer between two objects will be significantly altered in the presence of additional objects. We investigate the radiative heat transfer (RHT) between two graphene/SiC core-shell (GSCS) nanoparticles with the graphene-hBN (G-hBN) multilayer as an intermediate in this work. We find that, the HPPPs, due to the coupling of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) of graphene with hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPPs) of hBN, contribute to transfer the energy of the hot nanoparticle to the cold one through the multilayer. The radiative heat flux between two GSCS nanoparticles can be enhanced by 1722 times compared to that without the multilayer. This is mainly due to the coupling of the HPPPs of the G-hBN multilayer to the high-frequency localized surface resonance of the GSCS nanoparticles, which allows the transmitted energy to be enhanced by up to 60 k 0 . By tuning the chemical potential of graphene layers, the RHT between two nanoparticles can be dynamically and drastically modulated, e.g., by hundreds of times when h = 0.5 μm. These findings indicate that RHT between nanoparticles can be modulated over long distances, and provide a new insight on thermal management at the micro- and nanoscale.

Abstract:Understanding and manipulating the quantum interlayer exciton-phonon coupling in van der Waals heterostructures, especially for infrared active phonons with electromagnetic fields, would set a foundation for realizing exotic quantum phenomena and optoelectronic applications. Here we report experimental observations of strong mutual interactions between infrared active phonons in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and excitons in WS2. Our results underscore that the infrared active A(2u) mode of hBN becomes Raman active with strong intensities in WS2/hBN heterostructures through resonant coupling to the B exciton of WS2. Moreover, we demonstrate that the activated A(2u) phonon of hBN can be tuned by the hBN thickness and harbors a striking anticorrelation intensity modulation, as compared with the optically silent B-1g mode. Our observation of the interlayer exciton-infrared active phonon interactions and their evolution with hBN thickness provide a firm basis for engineering the hyperbolic exciton-phonon polaritons, chiral phonons and fascinating nanophotonics based on van der Waals heterostructures.

Abstract:In this paper, strong longitudinal coupling of the Tamm plasmon polaritons (TPPs) is investigated in a graphene/DBR/Ag slab hybrid system. It is found that TPPs can be excited at both the top graphene and the bottom silver slab interface, which can strongly interact with each other in this coupled structure. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that the vertical Tamm plasmon coupling can be either tuned by adjusting the geometric parameters or actively controlled by the Fermi energy in graphene sheet as well as the incident angle of light, allowing for strong light-matter interaction with a tunable dual-band perfect absorption. Moreover, the coupling strength of the hybrid modes exhibits a large tuning range, from a large Rabi splitting to an extremely narrow induced transparency in this coupled regime. Coupled mode theory has been employed to explain the strong coupling phenomenon. The controllable TPP coupling with an ultrahigh dual-band absorption capability offered by this simple layered structure opens new avenues for developing a broad range of graphene-based active optoelectronic and polaritonic devices.
