Abstract:We demonstrate a nonlinearity optimization method by altering distribution of passive fibers in a dissipative-soliton mode-locked fiber laser to level up output parameters. In the numerical simulation, we found that the passive fiber segment after gain fiber characterizes the highest average B-integral among fiber segments. By reducing the length of this fiber section and keeping the total passive fiber length as constant, the output pulse energy can be effectively scaled up while maintaining a short dechirped pulse duration, resulting in boosting peak power. With this method, 37-nJ pulses are generated from a dissipative-soliton mode-locked cladding pumped ytterbium-doped single-mode fiber laser in the experiment. The pulse can be dechirped to 66 fs with 350 kW peak power. Moreover, the pulse pedestal is suppressed by a vector-dispersion compressor.

Abstract:Multi-wavelength fiber lasers have the advantages of low cost, easy integration withfiber systems, and wide tunable range, which is the key component of dense wavelength divisionmultiplexing (DWDM). 2D MoTe2micro-sheets have drawn lots of researchers' attention due totheir anisotropic layered structure and high optical adsorption. Evanescent-field (EF) deviceshave many applications in multi-wavelength and high-power fiber lasers. The integration ofMoTe2micro-sheets and an EF device is able to combine their advantages. Here, we reporton the experimental observation of multi-wavelength solitons based on EF interaction withpolarization-sensitive MoTe2micro-sheet. Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate switchable operation of dissipative solitons (DSs) in an erbium-doped fiber laser. By managing normal dispersion of laser cavity, the 3-dB spectral bandwidth up to 8.1 nm can be obtained with the help of a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror. Using an inline polarizer, the fiber laser can be separately operated at either wavelength-tunable or multi-wavelength emission. The central wavelength of DS can be continuously tuned from 1554 to 1561 nm with its spectra maintaining standard rectangular shape. Alternatively, triple-wavelength DSs at 1535, 1544, and 1553 nm can be simultaneously obtained.

Abstract:The experiment reports a kind of L-band dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) nanosecond Er-doped fiber laser. The passive mode-locked L-band DSR pulse is achieved in a figure-eight structure by using the nonlinear-amplifying-loop-mirror (NALM). The repetition rate of pulse is 468 kHz. At the maximum pump power of 398 mW, the output power is 25 mW with a pulse energy of 45 nJ. By adjustment of polarization state in cavity, the output pulse can be switched among 4 different DSR states with central wavelength of 1572, 1585, 1590 and 1605 nm discretely, presenting different peak power and pulse width. We can determine that the adjustment of polarization state changes the loss spectra of cavity and the 4 DSR states operate in different balance points. The tunable DSR pulse duration is from 120 to 150 ns by increasing the central wavelength.

Abstract:We numerically and experimentally demonstrated that the central wavelength of the output pulses in an Er-doped mode-locked fiber laser can be switched from ∼1561 to ∼1531 nm, while these two pulses exhibit dispersion-management soliton and dissipative soliton, respectively. The switch capability of our fiber laser with different pulse waveforms can be attributed to combining the double-hump gain spectrum of Er-doped fiber and third-order dispersion (TOD) effect. By considering the TOD effect, the two wavelengths can be operated in different dispersion regime. The transient switch dynamics of these different type of solitons are also observed by time stretched technique. These findings provide a good foundation for comprehensively studying pulse formation dynamics in laser cavities, and benefit for design dual-wavelength fiber lasers.

Abstract:We report on the generation of dual-wavelength dissipative solitons (DSs) in a passively mode-locked figure-eight fiber laser operating in the net-normal dispersion regime. DSs with central wavelengths of 1572 and 1587 nm can be achieved simultaneously or respectively. The dual-wavelength DSs, traveling at different round-trip time, exhibit double-rectangular spectral profile. The intensities of two mode-locked spectra decrease or increase simultaneously after passing through a polarization beam splitter, indicating that the dual-wavelength DSs almost share the same polarization state. Experimental results demonstrated that dual-wavelength mode locking strongly depends on birefringence-induced filtering effect.

Abstract:A tunable L-band dissipative soliton (DS) fiber laser with nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) playing the roles of both a saturable absorber (SA) and a tunable filter has been demonstrated experimentally and numerically. By appropriate adjustment of the states of the polarization controllers (PCs) and the pump power, DSs with continuously tunable wavelengths have been observed over the wavelength range from 1583.0 to 1602.4 nm with a 3-dB spectral bandwidth of around 20 nm and from 1581.9 nm to 1602.6 nm with a 3-dB spectral bandwidth of around 4 nm. In addition, we have observed that by increasing the pump power, the 3-dB spectral bandwidth of the DS could be increased without pulse breaking. Numerical results for the characteristics of the DSs are in accord with the experimental data. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The dynamics of dissipative solitons (DSs) are explored in a high repetition rate normal-dispersion erbium-doped fiber laser for the first time. Despite of the high fundamental repetition rate of 129 MHz and thus the low pulse energy, a DS train with a dechirped pulse width of 418 fs, period-doubling of single and dual DSs, as well as 258 MHz 2nd-order harmonic mode-locking of DSs can be observed in the fiber laser with increasing pump power and appropriate settings. A transmitted semiconductor saturable absorber and a wavelength division multiplexer/isolator/tap hybrid module are employed to simplify the laser configuration, thus not only increasing the repetition rate, but also enhancing the stability and robustness of the fiber laser due to the commercial availability of all the components.

Abstract:We numerically and experimentally demonstrate the generation of broad bandwidth mode-locked dual-wavelength pulses with diverse-pattern from a dispersion managed erbium-doped (Er-doped) fiber laser. The two-peak gain profile of the Er-doped fiber is shown to have advantages in achieving broadband dual-wavelength pulses compared to a comb filter in our cavity. Our obtained bandwidths of 24 nm and 11.5 nm represent the broadest achieved in an Er-doped dual-wavelength fiber laser to date. In addition, the weak third-order dispersion (TOD) of the fibers facilitates two dispersion-pattern pulses (one stretched pulse and one dissipative soliton) generated in the near zero dispersion regime. Our results provide a convenient, effective way to obtain such sources for potential applications, such as in dual-comb metrology and multicolor pulses in nonlinear microscopy.

Abstract:A tunable dual-wavelength with two separated twin-pulse dissipative solitons (DSs) of Yb-doped mode-locked fiber laser in the all-normal-dispersion (ANDi) regime is firstly reported and demonstrated in this paper. A Sagnac loop is used as an all-fiber format spectral filter in the laser cavity, and stable twin-pulse DSs with different wavelength mode-locked lasers are achieved by the nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) effect. By adjusting the polarization state of the Sagnac loop, the spectral ranges of the dual-wavelength can be tuned from 1031.3 nm to 1041.5 nm and from 1067.1 nm to 1080.9 nm, respectively. However, the pulse space between the two separated twin-pulse DSs is maintained, i.e., 41.63 ns. Furthermore, the twin-pulse can regress to the single-pulse when the pump power keeps dropping. It has been observed that the highest energy of the two twin-pulse DSs output is 23.36 nJ at a repetition rate of 2.282 MHz with a maximum pump power of 560 mW.

Abstract:A long-term stable picosecond dissipative soliton (DS) is achieved for the first time using nonlinear polarization evolution. The environmental stabilization is performed by a Faraday mirror, which can cancel environmentally induced changes in the birefringence of the fiber. The laser cavity with all-polarization-maintaining fiber components generates DS pulses with 2.9 nJ single pulse energy and 5.9 ps pulse width. The output power test over 2 hours shows the excellent mode-locking stability of this design.

Abstract:Transitional operations of multiple dissipative solitons in a long-cavity normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser are experimentally investigated. Multiple dissipative solitons, including a stable soliton pair and a soliton triplet are observed by increasing the pump power or adjusting the polarization controllers. Two main boundaries of the stable asymmetric soliton and oscillating soliton are found between steady mode-locking. Moreover, multiple dissipative solitons with greater quantities of solitons are observed with pump power increasing. The experimental results agree well with a previous numerical study of multiple dissipative solitons.

Abstract:We report on the generation of multi-wavelength dissipative soliton (DS) in an all normal dispersion fiber laser passively mode-locked with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). We show that depending on the strength of the cavity birefringence, stable single-, dual- and triple-wavelength DSs can be formed in the laser. The multi-wavelength soliton operation of the laser was experimentally investigated, and the formation mechanisms of the multi-wavelength DSs are discussed.

Abstract:The mode locking of a Raman fiber laser with an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) pump source is investigated for performance improvement. Raman dissipative solitons with a compressed pulse duration of 1.05 ps at a repetition rate of 2.47 MHz are generated by utilizing nonlinear polarization rotation and all-fiber Lyot filter. A signal-to-noise ratio as high as 85 dB is measured in a radio-frequency spectrum, which suggests excellent temporal stability. Multiple-pulse operation with unique random static distribution is observed for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, at higher pump power in mode-locked Raman fiber lasers.

Abstract:We report on the first demonstration of dual-wavelength square-wave pulses in a thulium-doped fiber laser. Under appropriate cavity parameters, dual-wavelength dissipative soliton resonances (DSRs) and domain wall solitons (DWSs) are successively obtained. Meanwhile, dark pulses generation is achieved at the dual-wavelength DWSs region due to the overlap of the two domain wall pulses. The fiber-based Lyot filter, conducted by inserting PMF between an in-line PBS and a PD-ISO, facilitates the generation of dual-wavelength operation. The polarization-resolved investigation suggests that the cross coupling between two orthogonal polarization components in the high nonlinear fiber plays an important role in the square-wave pulses formation. The investigation may be helpful for further understanding the square-wave pulse formation and has potential in application filed of multi-wavelength pulsed fiber lasers.

Abstract:We experimentally studied the dynamic process of dissipative soliton build-up by dispersive Fourier transform in net normal dispersion cavity. The oscillation of spectral bandwidth and pulse energy before the stabilization of dissipative soliton was observed, the build-up and termination of the double dissipative solitons accompanied with soliton explosion and energy interaction were observed with higher pump power. Simulation of dissipative soliton build-up process was demonstrated through the extended nonlinear Schrödinger equation, negative feedback mechanism was summarized as the reason of the pulse oscillation during the build-up process.

Abstract:Dissipative soliton is a commonly employed operation regime for mode-locked lasers. In contrast to conventional soliton, a variety of stable spectral solutions, featuring wildly different spectral shapes and bandwidths, exist. While a few theoretical works have articulated the conditions necessary for different spectral solutions, experimentally, the transitions between these various dissipative soliton states are rarely investigated, and the physical knobs governing the state transition of dissipative soliton are still unclear. Here, in a Figure-9 laser, we observed a composite spectral mode of dissipative soliton, and demonstrate the detailed transition process between the two constituent states. Furthermore, by utilizing the dramatic change in spectral width during the mode transition, we realize wide tuning of the pulse duration from 230 fs to 13.7 ps, by only adjusting the pump power. Our results provide experimental support for understanding the various dissipative soliton working states and the transition process among them. In the meanwhile, the technical approach represents an effective way for swiftly tuning the pulse duration of mode-locked fiber lasers.
