Abstract:In this work, we put forward an all-dielectric nanotweezer using a quasi-bound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC) mode to trap nanoparticles with a radius of 10 nm. The quasi-BIC mode provides not only a very high electric field enhancement but also a high quality factor ( Q -factor), which gives it potential for the trapping of nanoparticles with low laser power and high stability. The simulation results show that when the input intensity is 1 m W / µ m 2 , the maximum optical trapping force of the 10 nm particles is 2.24 pN, and the maximum trapping potential is 29.08 k B T . Furthermore, the proposed nanotweezer array provides multiple optical hotspots with high field confinement and enhancement, resulting in multiple trapping sites for the parallel trapping of multiple nanoparticles. The high-throughput trapping of nanoparticles provides a good foundation for studying biological cells and protein molecules, especially for the heterogeneity of cells and the large-scale parallel analyses of basic drugs.
Etching-Engineered Low-Voltage Dielectrophoretic Nanotweezers for Trapping of Single Molecules.

Abstract:Understanding the functions of biomolecules at the single-molecule level is crucial due to their important and diverse roles in cell regulation. Recently, nanotweezers made of dual carbon nanoelectrodes have been developed for single-cell biopsies by applying a high alternating voltage. However, high electric voltage can induce Joule heating, water electrolysis, and other side effects on cell activity, which may be unfavorable for cellular applications. Here, we report a low-voltage nanotweezer for trapping of single DNA molecules using etching-engineered nanoelectrodes which effectively reduce the minimum trapping voltage by six times. Meanwhile, the low-voltage nanotweezer displays an improved trapping stiffness. Based on the finite element method simulations, we attribute the mechanism for the low-voltage nanotweezers to the increase in spatial heterogeneity and nonuniformity of electric field by etching of quartz near the nanoelectrodes. This work opens a new dimension for noninvasive single-molecule manipulation in solution and potential applications in single-cell biopsies.
Nanoparticle Trapping in a Quasi-BIC System

Abstract:Plasmonic nanotweezers employing metallic nanoantennas provide a powerful tool for trapping nanoscale particles, but the strong heating effect resulting from light absorption limits widespread applications. Here, we propose an all-dielectric nanotweezer harnessing quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs) to enable the trapping of nanoscale objects with low laser power and a negligible heating effect. The quasi-BIC system provides very high electromagnetic field intensity enhancement that is an order of magnitude higher than plasmonic systems as well as high-quality-factor resonances comparable to photonic crystal cavities. Furthermore, the quasi-BIC metasurface tweezer array provides multiple optical hotspots with high field confinement and enhancement, thereby generating multiple trapping sites for the high-throughput trapping of nanometer-scale objects. By purposefully truncating the tips of the constituent elliptical nanoantennas in the quasi-BIC system to leverage the asymmetric field distribution, we demonstrate that the optical gradient forces can be further enhanced by a factor of 1.32 in comparison to the intact elliptical nanoantenna, which has attractive potential in subwavelength particle trapping applications. In addition, we show that trapped particles can improve the resonance mode of the cavity rather than suppress it in a symmetry-broken system, which in turn enhances the trapping process. Abstract:Plasmonic nanotweezer manipulates nanoparticles utilizing extraordinary electric field gradients and field enhancement originated from localized surface plasmon resonance. We proposed an ingenious silver-based cross diabolo hollow notch plasmonic nanotweezer. Additional edges at the center maximize the field enhancement caused by local surface plasmon hot spots. Moreover, the bottom Ag film's screening effect significantly increases the field intensity near the trapping targets. The subsequent field gradient remarkably enhances the trapping capability of the design in comparison to conventional plasmonic tweezers. We carried out a comprehensive analysis of structural design optimization to reduce power consumption and significantly improve optical trapping properties. The proposed Ag CDHN nanotweezer can trap a polystyrene sphere of 30 nm diameter at a minimum beam intensity of 2.66 mW/ m and trapping force of 2.14 nN/(W. m ) towards the nanostructure. In comparison to previously reported nanotweezers, the proposed nanotweezer demonstrated a few-order increase in trapping stiffness and a few times decrease in power consumption. We also evaluated its capacity to trap polystyrene spheres of varying diameters. Our proposed design and analysis will be beneficial in realizing effective nanotweezer for nanoparticle manipulation as well as nanostructure fabrication.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for optical trapping and alignment of dielectric particles in aqueous environments at the nanometer scale. The scheme is based on the highly enhanced electric field close to a laser-illuminated metal tip and the strong mechanical forces and torque associated with these fields. We obtain a rigorous solution of Maxwell's equations for the electromagnetic fields near the tip and calculate the trapping potentials for a dielectric particle beyond the Rayleigh approximation. The results indicate the feasibility of the scheme.

Abstract:Photonic crystal (PhC) cavities have been widely utilized for the optical trapping. However, it is still challenging to achieve high-efficiency optical trapping of ultrasmall nanoparticles. In this paper, we show optical trapping of a 3 nm size single nanoparticle by using an ultrahigh Q/V bow-tie-shaped PhC nanobeam cavity. For the trapping of a single polystyrene nanoparticle with the radius as small as 3 nm, a maximum trapping force of 1.2 × 105 pN/mW is theoretically obtained, which is at least one order of magnitude higher than the previous results. Furthermore, the calculated sensitivity for the cavity is around 350 nm/RIU, which provides a valid solution for monitoring the trapping process of the nanoparticles with ultrasmall size. We believe that such structure with characteristics of extreme light confinement and high trapping efficiency will be conducive to the development of multifunctional on-chip trapping devices.

Abstract:Based on the balance between the scattering force and the trapping force of an evanescent field of a standing wave on silicon waveguides, we propose a structure for controllable trapping and releasing of nanoparticles, which can act as pause operation for nanoparticle flow control. The design is realized by the cascade of an optical switch with a structure of a ring-assisted Mach-Zehnder interferometer (RAMZI) and a Sagnac loop reflector which connects to one output of the switch. Through thermal tuning, with a tiny refractive index change of 4.3 x 10(-4) on a ring resonator, the output of a RAMZI can be switched between two ports. As for the release state of the nanopartide flow, the light is guided to the port without a reflector. There is no standing wave or traps formed on a waveguide. Therefore, the scattering force dominates, which drives particles moving forward to output ports. Otherwise, for trapping a state, the light will be reflected by the Sagnac loop and form a stationary standing wave which provides an array of traps for nanoparticles. Most importantly, the structure can switch its state to trap or sequentially release particles without losing the control of samples which, to the best of our knowledge, has not been realized before. With the statistical description of particle motion, the balance between trapping and releasing is distinguished by the trapping time and tuned by reflectance. The feasibility of our design is verified using the three-dimensional finite-difference time domain and Maxwell stress tensor methods. Our structure possesses the merits of high compactness and time effectiveness and, thereby, it is highly suitable for on-chip optical manipulation of nanopartide flow control, which brings great potential in integrated on-chip optofluidics. Optomechanically induced optical trapping system based on photonic crystal cavities

Abstract:Optical trapping has proven to be a valuable experimental technique for precisely controlling small dielectric objects. However, due to their very nature, conventional optical traps are diffraction limited and require high intensities to confine the dielectric objects. In this work, we propose a novel optical trap based on dielectric photonic crystal nanobeam cavities, which overcomes the limitations of conventional optical traps by significant factors. This is achieved by exploiting an optomechanically induced backaction mechanism between a dielectric nanoparticle and the cavities. We perform numerical simulations to show that our trap can fully levitate a submicron-scale dielectric particle with a trap width as narrow as 56 nm. It allows for achieving a high trap stiffness, therefore, a high Q-frequency product for the particle's motion while reducing the optical absorption by a factor of 43 compared to the cases for conventional optical tweezers. Moreover, we show that multiple laser tones can be used further to create a complex, dynamic potential landscape with feature sizes well below the diffraction limit. The presented optical trapping system offers new opportunities for precision sensing and fundamental quantum experiments based on levitated particles.

Abstract:Polarization singularities and topological vortices in photonic crystal slabs centered at bound states in the continuum (BICs) can be attributed to zero amplitude of polarization vectors. We show that such topological features are also observed in optical forces within the vicinity of BIC, around which the force vectors wind in the momentum space. The topological force carries force topological charge and can be used for trapping and repelling nanoparticles. By tailoring asymmetry of the photonic crystal slab, topological force will contain spinning behavior and shifted force zeros, which can lead to three-dimensional asymmetric trapping. Several off-Γ BICs generate multiple force zeros with various force distribution patterns. Our findings introduce the concepts of topology to optical force around BICs and create opportunities to realize optical force vortices and enhanced reversible forces for manipulating nanoparticles and fluid flow.

Trapping single atoms on a nanophotonic circuit with configurable tweezer lattices

Abstract:Trapped atoms near nanophotonics form an exciting platform for bottom-up synthesis of strongly interacting quantum matter. The ability to induce tunable long-range atom-atom interactions with photons presents an opportunity to explore many-body physics and quantum optics. Here we implement a configurable optical tweezer array over a planar photonic circuit tailored for cold atom integration and control for trapping and high-fidelity imaging of one or more atoms in an array directly on a photonic structure. Using an optical conveyor belt formed by a moving optical lattice within a tweezer potential, we show that single atoms can be transported from a reservoir into close proximity of a photonic interface, potentially allowing for the synthesis of a defect-free atom-nanophotonic hybrid lattice. Our experimental platform can be integrated with generic planar photonic waveguides and resonators, promising a pathway towards on-chip many-body quantum optics and applications in quantum technology.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures can overcome Abbe's diffraction limit to generate strong gradient fields, enabling efficient optical trapping of nano-sized particles. However, it remains challenging to achieve stable trapping with low incident laser intensity. Here, we demonstrate a Fano resonance-assisted plasmonic optical tweezers (FAPOT), for single nanoparticle trapping in an array of asymmetrical split nano-apertures, milled on a 50 nm gold thin film. Stable trapping is achieved by tuning the trapping wavelength and varying the incident trapping laser intensity. A very large normalized trap stiffness of 8.65 fN/nm/mW for 20 nm polystyrene particles at a near-resonance trapping wavelength of 930 nm was achieved. We show that trap stiffness on resonance is enhanced by a factor of 63 compared to off-resonance conditions. This can be attributed to the ultra-small mode volume, which enables large near-field strengths and a cavity Purcell effect contribution. These results should facilitate strong trapping with low incident trapping laser intensity, thereby providing new options for studying transition paths of single molecules, such as proteins, DNA, or viruses.

Investigation of near-field optical tweezers based on the edge effect of extraordinary optical transmission in thin microcavity

Abstract:Optical tweezers are powerful tools capably to trap and manipulate particles directly. However, using conventional optical tweezers to nanosized objects remains formidable challenges due to the optical diffraction limits and high-power levels required for nanoscale trapping, which usually causes irreversible damage to the captured particles. In this paper, we investigate the near-field edge effect of thin microcavity due to macroscopic quantum effect, and the highly enhanced electric field can reach 2.4 times. Thus, a dual near-field optical trap potential well is generated at the edge of the thin microcavity. We theoretically show that this near-field potential well can stably capture nanoparticles smaller than 10nm while keeping the incident optical power level below 100 mW. Besides, the relationship between size of the microcavity and optical gradient force has also been carefully studied. Finally, the theoretical model of near-field optical tweezers with double thin microcavity is established, and the electric field magnitude of the double microcavity model is enhanced by 4.5 times compared with single microcavity model, in which the coupling effect of double hole makes smaller particles can be stably trapped. Our research presents a huge potential for optical trapping and separation of nanoparticles and biomolecules.

Abstract:Optical trapping enables precise control of individual particles of different sizes, such as atoms, molecules, or nanospheres. Optical tweezers provide free-space omnidirectional optical trapping of objects in laboratories around the world. As an alternative to standard macroscopic setups based on lenses, which are inherently bound by the diffraction limit, plasmonic and photonic nanostructures promise trapping by near-field optical effects on the extreme nanoscale. However, the practical design of lossless waveguide-coupled nanostructures capable of trapping sub-wavelength-sized particles in all spatial directions has until now proven insurmountable. In this work, we demonstrate an omnidirectional optical trap realized by inverse-designing fabrication-ready integrated dielectric nanocavities. The sub-wavelength optical trap is designed to rely solely on the gradient force and is thus particle-size agnostic. In particular, we show how a trapped particle with a radius of 15 nm experiences a force strong enough to overcome room-temperature thermal fluctuations. Furthermore, through the robust inverse design framework, we tailor manufacturable devices operating at short-wave infrared and near-infrared wavelengths. Our results open a new regime of levitated optical trapping by achieving a deep trapping potential capable of trapping single sub-wavelength particles in all directions using optical gradient forces. We anticipate potentially groundbreaking applications of the optimized optical trapping system for biomolecular analysis in aqueous environments, levitated cavity-optomechanics, and cold atom physics, constituting an important step towards realizing integrated bio-nanophotonics and mesoscopic quantum mechanical experiments.

Nanoscale Trap for Isolated Cold Atoms by the Nanoscale Solid-State System

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme to generate nanoscale optical trap for cold atoms near the tapered Ag nanotip, in which we take a microdisk cavity near the nanoscale trap and form a nanoscale solid-state system to realize the loading of the isolated cold atoms. We calculate the field distribution by the FDTD method near the nanotip, and discuss the intensity, the optical potential and van der Waals potential as well as the dipole force for 87Rb atoms. We find that the total potential and dipole force can form an attracting nanoscale trap for cold atoms with red-detuned field and it can realize the effective trapping and manipulation of the isolated atoms, which can enable efficient fluorescence photon collection and strong coupling in the coupled optical fiber.

Abstract:A slotted nanobeam cavity (SNC) is utilized to trap a polystyrene (PS) particle with a radius of only 2 nm. The carefully designed SNC shows an ultrahigh Q factor of 4.5 × 107 while maintaining a small mode volume of 0.067(λ/nwater)3. Strongly enhanced optical trapping force is numerically demonstrated when the 2 nm PS particle is introduced into the central, slotted part of the SNC. In the vertical direction, the numerical calculation results show that a trapping stiffness of 0.4 pN/(nm · mW) around the equilibrium position and a trapping potential barrier of ~2000 kBT/mW can be reached. To our best knowledge, the trapping capability (trapping stiffness and trapping potential barrier) of the proposed structure significantly outperforms the theoretical results of those in previously reported work. In addition, the SNC system does not suffer from the metal induced heat issue that restricts the performance of state-of-the-art optical trapping systems involving plasmonic enhancement. Based on the proposed cavity, applications such as lab-on-a-chip platforms for nanoscale particle trapping and analysis can be expected in future.

Abstract:Infrared matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (IR-MALDI) of the polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene, and dibenz[a,h]anthracene was performed using a 10.6-microm CO2 laser and a liquid matrix. Sulfolane (tetrahydrothiophene 1,1-dioxide) was found to be an effective matrix for PAH ionization: mass spectra obtained with a sulfolane matrix contain an intense molecular ion peak; interference from PAH fragment and matrix peaks is negligible in all cases. The main limitation of the sulfolane matrix is sample evaporation after 3 to 5 min in vacuum. This sample lifetime can be increased to between 15 and 30 min using a 2:1 (v/v) mixture of sulfolane and glycerol, but the resulting spectra have greater matrix interference and decreased shot-to-shot signal stability.

Abstract:We investigate the transverse trapping force acting on a small particle on or off the central axis of zero-order finite Bessel beams. Combining the simulated fields with the Gorkov force potential, the transverse trapping behaviors for small objects are analyzed, and the reversal of the trapping behaviors is recovered when varying the paraxiality parameter of the Bessel beam. The results prove the possibility of using axisymmetric Bessel beams to trap both dense and stiff particles as well as light and soft ones. The particles can be trapped at the maximum central pressure in the main lobe and also the maximum pressure of the other transverse locations. A lossy acoustic metastructure with the ability to decouple the phase and amplitude modulations is used to generate the desired sound field, which is used to trap a foam ball as an example. Optically assisted diffusophoretic tweezers using resonant plasmonic bowtie nano-antennas

Abstract:Plasmonic antennas, leveraging localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), hold significant promise for efficiently trapping nanoscale particles at low power levels. However, their effectiveness is hindered by photothermal effects in metallic nanoparticles, leading to repulsive thermophoretic forces. To address this limitation, we propose a novel hybrid approach that combines depletion attraction and photothermal effects inherent in plasmonic structures, capitalizing on thermally induced concentration gradients. Through the thermophoretic depletion of polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecules around plasmonic hotspots, we create sharp concentration gradients, enabling precise localization of nanoscopic particles through a synergistic effect with diffusophoretic forces. In our experiments, we successfully demonstrate the trapping and dynamic 2D manipulation of 100 nm polystyrene beads, showcasing the platform's potential for colloidal assembly at the nanoscale. Remarkably, this method maintains highly stable trapping performance even at an incredibly low 2.5 mW laser power, rendering it particularly appealing for applications involving biological species. Our study introduces a promising avenue for the precise and efficient manipulation of sub-nanoscale particles, with wide-ranging implications in nanotechnology, biophysics, and nanomedicine. This research opens up new opportunities for advancing nanoscale particle studies and applications, ushering in a new era of nanoscale manipulation techniques.

However, it remains challenging to achieve efficient stable trapping without heating and thermal effects. Dielectric structures have been used to address this issue, but they usually offer weak trap stiffness. In this work, we exploit the Fano resonance effect in an all-dielectric quadrupole nanostructure to realize a twenty-fold enhancement of trap stiffness, compared to the off-resonance case. This enables a high effective trap stiffness of $1.19$ fN/nm for 100 nm diameter polystyrene nanoparticles with 3.5 mW/$\mu$m$^{2}$ illumination. Furthermore, we demonstrate the capability of the structure to simultaneously trap two particles at distinct locations within the nanostructure array.
