Abstract:We consider a bulk system supporting parity and time reversal (PT ) symmetry, and investigate how the PT phase transition of edge states is influenced by different truncations of the system. As an example, we study a two-dimensional PT-symmetric Su???Schrieffer???Heeger lattice with non-Hermitian onsite potentials. We find that when the truncation preserves certain symmetries of the bulk lattice, the edge states can remain in the PT-unbroken phase when the non-Hermitian onsite potentials are less than a nonzero critical value. On the other hand, when the truncation removes such symmetries, edge states with complex eigen-energies are observed for infinitesimal non-Hermitian onsite potentials. We develop an analytic theory to account for such behaviors. Our results are important in the manipulation of the gain and loss behaviors of edge states in non-Hermitian systems, with potential applications in the study of topological lasers, quantum sensors, and unidirectional invisibility.
Edge-induced Topological Phase Transition of the Quantum Hall State at Half Filling

Abstract:We show that in quantum Hall systems at half-filling, edge potentials alone can drive transitions between the Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian topological phases. We conjecture this is true in realistic systems even in the presence of weak bulk interactions that break the particle-hole symmetry. The strong effects of edge potentials could be understood from different topological shifts of competing phases, manifested on the disk geometry as the variation of orbital numbers at fixed number of particles. In particular, we show analytically particle-hole conjugation of Hamiltonians on the disk is equivalent to the tuning of edge potentials, which allows us to explicitly demonstrate the phase transition numerically. The importance of edge potentials in various experimental contexts, including the recently discovered particle-hole symmetric phase is also discussed.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate topological features of a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice with modulating non-Hermitian on-site potentials containing four sublattices per unit cell. The lattice can be either commensurate or incommensurate. In the former case, the entire lattice can be mapped by supercells completely. While in the latter case, there are two extra lattice points, thereby making the last cell incomplete. We find that an anti-PT transition occurs at exceptional points of edge states at certain parameters, which does not coincide with the conventional topological phase transition characterized by the Berry phase, provided the imaginary on-site potential is large enough. Interestingly, when the potential exceeds a critical value, edge states appear even in the regime with a trivial Berry phase. To characterize these novel edge states we present topological invariants associated with the system's parity. Finally, we analyze the dynamics for initial states with different spatial distributions, which exhibit distinct dynamics for the commensurate and incommensurate cases, depending on the imaginary part of edge state energy.

Abstract:We study the PT-symmetry breaking for the scattering problem in a one-dimensional non-Hermitian tight-binding lattice model with balanced gain and loss distributed on two adjacent sites. In the scattering process the system undergoes a transition from the exact PT-symmetric phase to the phase with spontaneously breaking PT symmetry as the amplitude of complex potentials increases. Using the S-matrix method, we derive an exact discriminant, which can be used to distinguish different symmetry phases, and determine the exceptional point for the symmetry breaking analytically. In the PT-symmetry-breaking region, we also confirm the appearance of the unique feature, i.e., the coherent perfect absorption laser, in this simple non-Hermitian lattice model. The study of the scattering problem of such a simple model provides an additional way to unveil the physical effect of non-Hermitian PT-symmetric potentials.

Abstract:We study the parity- and time-reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with two conjugated imaginary potentials $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}i\ensuremath{\gamma}$ at two end sites. The SSH model is known as one of the simplest two-band topological models which has topologically trivial and nontrivial phases. We find that the non-Hermitian terms can lead to different effects on the properties of the eigenvalues spectrum in topologically trivial and nontrivial phases. In the topologically trivial phase, the system undergos an abrupt transition from the unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry region to the spontaneously broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry region at a certain ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{c}$, and a second transition occurs at another transition point ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{{c}^{{}^{\ensuremath{'}}}}$ when further increasing the strength of the imaginary potential $\ensuremath{\gamma}$. But in the topologically nontrivial phase, the zero-mode edge states become unstable for arbitrary nonzero $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry of the system is spontaneously broken, which is characterized by the emergence of a pair of conjugated imaginary modes.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the band structure of the one-dimensional rhombus lattice by considering the existence of PT-symmetric imaginary potentials. Results show that the effects of such potentials are tightly determined by their presence manners. When they are applied to the end sites of the lattice, topological edge states can be efficiently modulated. Meanwhile, more edge states caused by PT-symmetry imaginary potential appear in the system, and the system undergoes the spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking transition. When local magnetic flux is incorporated, edge states can be further adjusted. However once PT-symmetric imaginary potentials are added to each unit cell of the lattice, they are less effective in manipulating the edge states despite the modification in the band structure. Based on these results, we better comprehend the adjustability of the edge states of the rhombus lattice by applying the PT-symmetric imaginary potentials.

Topologically Distinct Critical Theories Emerging from the Bulk Entanglement Spectrum of Integer Quantum Hall States on A Lattice

Abstract:The critical theories for the topological phase transitions of integer quantum Hall states to a trivial insulating state with the same symmetry can be obtained by calculating the ground state entanglement spectrum under a symmetric checkerboard bipartition. In contrast to the gapless edge excitations under the left-right bipartition, a quantum network with bulk gapless excitations naturally emerges at the Brillouin zone center without fine tuning. On a large finite lattice, the resulting critical theory for the $\nu =1$ state is the (2+1) dimensional relativistic quantum field theory characterized by a \textit{single} Dirac cone spectrum and a pair of \textit{fractionalized} zero-energy states, while for the $\nu =2$ state the critical theory exhibits a parabolic spectrum and no sign of fractionalization in the zero-energy states. A triangular correspondence is established among the bulk topological theory, gapless edge theory, and the critical theory via the ground state entanglement spectrum.

Abstract:Breaking Hermiticity in topological systems gives rise to intriguing phenomena, such as the exceptional topology and the non-Hermitian skin effect. In this work, we study a non-Hermitian topological crystalline insulator sitting on the Kekulé texture-modulated honeycomb lattice with balanced gain and loss. We find that the gaplessness of the topological edge states in the non-Hermitian system is insensitive to edge geometries under moderate strength of gain and loss, unlike the cases of Hermitian topological crystalline insulators that depend on edge geometries crucially. We focus on two types of gain and loss configurations, which are PT symmetric and PT asymmetric, respectively. For the PT-symmetric configuration, the Dirac point of the topological edge states in the Hermitian molecular-zigzag-terminated ribbons splits into a pair of exceptional points. The edge gap in the Hermitian armchair-terminated ribbons vanishes and a Dirac point forms as far as moderate gain and loss is induced. The band gaps of edge and bulk states in the Hermitian armchair-terminated ribbons close simultaneously for the PT-asymmetric configuration.

Abstract:The existence of edge states is one of the most vital properties of topological insulators. Although tremendous success has been accomplished in describing and explaining edge states associated with PT symmetry breaking, little work has been done on PT symmetry preserving cases. Two-dimensional Schroedinger operators with super honeycomb lattice potentials always have double Dirac cones at the Gamma point - the zero momentum point on their energy bands due to C6 symmetry, PT symmetry, and the "folding" symmetry - caused by an additional translation symmetry. There are two topologically different ways to deform such a system by PT symmetry preserving but folding symmetry breaking perturbations. Interestingly, there exist two gapped edge states on the interface between such two kinds of perturbed materials. In this paper, we illustrate the existence of such PT preserving edge states rigorously for the first time. We use a domain wall modulated Schroedinger operator to model the phenomenon under small perturbations and rigorously prove the existence of two gapped edge states. We also provide a brief interpretation from the point of view of "topology" by the parities of degenerate bulk modes. Our work thoroughly explains the existence of "helical" like edge states in super honeycomb configurations and lays a foundation for the descriptions of topologies of such systems.

Abstract:Recent advances in non-Hermitian topological phases have exploited the unusual features in photonics systems. In particular, the coupling effect and parity–time (PT) symmetry have been found to jointly determine the transition of topological edge states, which have yet to be detected directly in coupled PT-symmetric waveguides. In this work, we use a finite waveguide array described by the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model to explicitly reveal the relation between the topological states and PT symmetry and unveil the condition for the coexistence of topological edge states and PT phases. Microwave-near-field experiments have revealed non-trivial edge states in both exact- and broken-PT phases in ultrathin corrugated metallic coupled waveguide arrays. This work thus establishes an integrated microwave waveguide platform based on which more interesting physics and functional devices related to topological photonics and PT symmetry may be developed.

Abstract:The topologically nontrivial edge states induce PT transition in Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain with one pair of gain and loss at boundaries. In this study, we investigated a pair of PT-symmetric defects located inside the SSH chain, in particular, the defects locations are at the chain centre. The PT symmetry breaking of the bound states leads to the PT transition, the PT-symmetric phases and the localized states were studied. In the broken PT-symmetric phase, all energy levels break simultaneously in topologically trivial phase; however, two edge states in topologically nontrivial phase are free from the influence of the PT-symmetric defects. We discovered PT-symmetric bound states induced by the PT-symmetric local defects at the SSH chain centre. The PT-symmetric bound states significantly increase the PT transition threshold and coalesce to the topologically protected zero mode with vanishing probabilities on every other site of the left-half chain and the right-half chain, respectively.

Abstract:In this work, phase transitions of the non-Hermitian tetramerized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (TSSH) chain are investigated by periodically introducing the non-Hermitian on-site imaginary potentials U1=(iγ1,iγ2,−iγ1,−iγ2) or U2=(iγ1,−iγ2,−iγ1,iγ2) , with γ1 and γ2 being the imaginary-potential strengths. Numerical results show that these imaginary potentials induce the topologically nontrivial transitions of the topological properties of the TSSH chain in different ways. Namely, U1 only modifies the two-fold degenerated topologically nontrivial region, without affecting the other topological phases. By contrast, U2 can reduce the topologically trivial region and modify the four-fold degenerated topologically nontrivial region by introducing the new topological phase transition. Moreover, when the imaginary potentials are influenced by the Anderson disorder, the bulk states display obvious localization. Disordered U2 leads to the widening of the topologically nontrivial regions. Based on these results, we believe this work provides insights into the influences of on-site imaginary potentials on the topological properties of non-Hermitian TSSH structures. A Unified View of Topological Phase Transition in Band Theory

Abstract:We develop a unified view of topological phase transitions (TPTs) in solids by revising the classical band theory with the inclusion of topology. Re-evaluating the band evolution from an "atomic crystal" [a normal insulator (NI)] to a solid crystal, such as a semiconductor, we demonstrate that there exists ubiquitously an intermediate phase of topological insulator (TI), whose critical transition point displays a linear scaling between electron hopping potential and average bond length, underlined by deformation-potential theory. The validity of the scaling relation is verified in various two-dimensional (2D) lattices regardless of lattice symmetry, periodicity, and form of electron hoppings, based on a generic tight-binding model. Significantly, this linear scaling is shown to set an upper bound for the degree of structural disorder to destroy the topological order in a crystalline solid, as exemplified by formation of vacancies and thermal disorder. Our work formulates a simple framework for understanding the physical nature of TPTs with significant implications in practical applications of topological materials.

Abstract:We study the effect of non-Hermition coupling on topological and Hermitian characteristics in a non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain. Different effects on the properties of the eigenvalues spectrum in topologically trivial and nontrivial phases are presented. The odevity of the number of lattices is also considered. We find that in the even number lattices case the system undergoes an abrupt transition from the Hermitian states to non-Hermitian states at a certain critical point when increasing the strength of the imaginary potential in non-Hermitian coupling. But in the odd number lattices case the “critical points” are actually pseudo critical points, which is proved by the amplitudes distributions calculated by coupled mode theory (CMT).

Abstract:The discovery of topological phases in non-Hermitian open classical and quantum systems challenges our current understanding of topological order. Non-Hermitian systems exhibit unique features with no counterparts in topological Hermitian models, such as failure of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence and non-Hermitian skin effect. Advances in the understanding of the topological properties of non-Hermitian lattices with translational invariance have been reported in several recent studies, however little is known about non-Hermitian quasicrystals. Here we disclose topological phases in a quasicrystal with parity-time (PT ) symmetry, described by a non-Hermitian extension of the Aubry-André-Harper model. It is shown that the metal-insulating phase transition, observed at the PT symmetry breaking point, is of topological nature and can be expressed in terms of a winding number. A photonic realization of a non-Hermitian quasicrystal is also suggested.

Abstract:Non-Hermiticity significantly enriches the properties of topological models, leading to exotic features such as the non-Hermitian skin effects and non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence that have no counterparts in Hermitian settings. Its impact is particularly illustrating in non-Hermitian quasicrystals where the interplay between non-Hermiticity and quasiperiodicity results in the concurrence of the delocalization-localization transition, the parity-time (PT)-symmetry breaking, and the onset of the nonHermitian skin effects. Here, we experimentally simulate non-Hermitian quasicrystals using photonic quantum walks. Using dynamic observables, we demonstrate that the system can transit from a delocalized, PT-symmetry broken phase that features non-Hermitian skin effects, to a localized, PT-symmetry unbroken phase with no non-Hermitian skin effects. The measured critical point is consistent with the theoretical prediction through a spectral winding number, confirming the topological origin of the phase transition. More interestingly, we also provide the first experimental evidence for mobility edges which are induced by non-Hermiticity. Our Letter opens the avenue of investigating the interplay of non-Hermiticity, quasiperiodicity, and spectral topology in open quantum systems.

Abstract:Herein, the topological phase transition of an extended non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with both asymmetric nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor hopping is investigated. Moreover, an analytical method to determine the topological phase transition point under the open boundary condition is developed through a combination of the conditions required for constructing the generalized Brillouin zone and the topological invariants associated with distinct topological regions. The analytical results obtained thereafter are observed to be consistent with the analysis of the numerical energy spectrum under the open boundary condition. Finally, the bulk-boundary correspondence in such a non-Hermitian system is also discussed.

Abstract:Using Monte Carlo techniques and finite-size analysis, we investigate several two-dimensional lattice models with open edges, including the Blume-Capel model and the q=1 and 3 Potts models with vacancies. At bulk tricriticality, we find that the open edges are dominated by the vacancies when the surface coupling K-s and the chemical potential D-s of the vacancies assume the bulk values. When K-s and/or D-s is sufficiently enhanced, an edge phase transition takes place, beyond which spontaneous one-dimensional order occurs on the edges. Edge phase transitions can also be induced by a surface magnetic field H-s. We numerically determine a number of edge critical exponents and derive phase diagrams in terms of K-s, D-s, and H-s. In the low-temperature region, we observe first-order transitions when K-s and D-s are varied; the associated hysteresis loops of surface quantities are remarkably asymmetric. Some further insight into these edge transitions is provided by the exact equivalence of the tricritical q=1 Potts model and the Ising model.

Abstract:Non-Hermiticity alone can trigger topological phase transition in physical systems. Here, we construct different unit cells in an acoustic Su Schrieffer Heeger chain with different distributions of onsite losses. We theoretically and numerically investigate the different edge modes that can occur at the domain walls of different finite chains. Three types of edge modes are identified. The first type comes from the topology of the unit cells. The second type comes from the local Parity symmetry at the interface, which are cavity modes. The third one comes from the Parity-Time symmetric domain wall. The robustness against coupling disorder is then examined, confirming the robustness of the topologically protected modes. The evolution with increasing disorder of the interface modes due to the Parity-Time symmetric domain wall is singular as they appear first as more robust than the cavity modes before diverging. These results show the ability of the onsite losses ingredient to control wavefields.
