Abstract:Cutting a honeycomb lattice (HCL) ends up with three types of edges (zigzag, bearded, and armchair), as is well known in the study of graphene edge states. Here, we propose and demonstrate a distinctive twig-shaped edge, thereby observing new edge states using a photonic platform. Our main findings are (i) the twig edge is a generic type of HCL edge complementary to the armchair edge, formed by choosing the right primitive cell rather than simple lattice cutting or Klein edge modification; (ii) the twig edge states form a complete flat band across the Brillouin zone with zero-energy degeneracy, characterized by nontrivial topological winding of the lattice Hamiltonian; (iii) the twig edge states can be elongated or compactly localized at the boundary, manifesting both flat band and topological features. Although realized here in a photonic graphene, such twig edge states should exist in other synthetic HCL structures. Abstract:Periodically driven systems have displayed a variety of fascinating phenomena without analogies in static systems, which enrich the classification of quantum phases of matter and stimulate a wide range of research interests. Here, we employ discrete-time quantum walks to investigate a nontrivial topological effect unique to a two-dimensional periodically driven system: chiral edge states can exist at the interface of Floquet insulators whose Chern numbers vanish. Thanks to a resource-saving and flexible fiber-loop architecture, we realize inhomogeneous two-dimensional quantum walks up to 25 steps, over an effective 51 x 51 lattice with tunable local parameters. Spin-polarized chiral edge states are observed at the boundary of two distinct quantum walk domains. Our results contribute to establishing a well-controlled platform for exploring nontrivial topological phases.
Coexistence of Pseudospin- and Valley-Hall-like Edge States in a Photonic Crystal with C3v Symmetry

Abstract:We demonstrate the coexistence of pseudospin- and valley-Hall-like edge states in a photonic crystal with C-3v symmetry, which is composed of three interlacing triangular sublattices with the same lattice constants. By tuning the geometry of the sublattices, three complete photonic band gaps with nontrivial topology can be created, one of which is due to the band inversion associated with the pseudospin degree of freedom at the Gamma point and the other two due to the gapping out of Dirac cones associated with the valley degree of freedom at the K, K' points. The system can support triband pseudospin- and valley-momentum locking edge states at properly designed domain-wall interfaces. Furthermore, to demonstrate the novel interplay of the two kinds of edge states in a single configuration, we design a four-channel system, where the unidirectional routing of electromagnetic waves against sharp bends between two routes can be selectively controlled by the pseudospin and valley degrees of freedom. Our work combines the pseudospin and valley degrees of freedom in a single configuration and may provide more flexibility in manipulating electromagnetic waves with promising potential for multiband and multifunctional applications.

Abstract:Edge states in topological photonic systems have the robust unidirectional propagation feature which originates from the topological nature of the bulk band dispersion. In this work, we propose a topological photonic crystal (PC) waveguide that is formed by introducing an air gap in an all-dielectric PC with $C_{6v}$ symmetry. The dispersion of the line defect states is tunable by varying the width of the air gap. Based on their field distributions, the states can be classified into even- and odd-symmetric states. The even-symmetric states are found to be the nontrivial topological edge states and exhibit pseudospin-locking unidirectional propagation property. By introducing disorders to the waveguide, these states are proven to be robust with well suppressed backscattering.

Abstract:We study edge-states in graphene systems where a bulk energy gap is opened by inversion symmetry breaking. We find that the edge-bands dispersion can be controlled by potentials applied on the boundary with unit cell length scale. Under certain boundary potentials, gapless edge-states with valley-dependent velocity are found, exactly analogous to the spin-dependent gapless chiral edge-states in quantum spin Hall systems. The connection of the edge-states to bulk topological properties is revealed.

Abstract:Flat band lattice systems promote the appearance of perfectly compact bulk states, whereas topology favors edge localization. In this work, we report the existence of compact topological edge states on flux-dressed photonic graphene ribbons. We found that robust localization is achieved through a synergy of Aharonov-Bohm caging and topological protection mechanisms. The topological nontriviality of the compact edge states is characterized through both theoretical derivations and experimental observations of an integer Zak phase obtained from the mean chiral displacement. Experiments are performed using direct laser writing of a graphene ribbon photonic lattice having 0 or π effective magnetic fluxes. Mode stability is demonstrated by the exceptional localization of the edge compact mode and its resilience to fabrication tolerances and input phase deviations. Our findings demonstrate the existence of perfectly compact topological edge states, as a concrete and promising example of synergy in between flat band physics and topology.

Abstract:Higher-order topological states extend the power of nontrivial topological states beyond the bulk-edge correspondence. Here we study the higher-order topological states (corner states) in an open-boundary two-dimensional T-graphene lattice. Unlike the common zero-energy corner states, our findings reveal non-zero energy corner states in such lattice systems, and the energy could be controlled by modifying the hopping parameters. Moreover, the corner states could be transferred away from the lattice corners by designing the position-specific vacancy defects. The strong robustness of the corner states is also demonstrated against the uniaxial strain and vacancy defects, respectively. A plasmonic crystal is constructed to testify to the theory, in which the corner states are realized in optical modes and their higher-order topological properties are verified. Our results open the avenue of corner-states engineering, which holds significant physical implications of higher-order topological states for the design of photonic and electronic devices with specialized functionalities.

Abstract:Higher-order topological semimetals (HOTSMs) represent a novel type of gapless topological phase, hosting boundary states with dimensions at least two lower than those of their bulk geometry. Such nontrivial boundary states have been predicted and observed in three-dimensional (3D) gapless topological systems, representing features of the HOTSMs. However, their two-dimensional (2D) analogs, represented especially by the corner states in monolayer graphene-like structures, have thus far remained only a theoretical exploration. Here, we experimentally demonstrate nontrivial corner states in specially tailored photonic graphene hosting Dirac points, manifesting the HOTSM-like property in a 2D photonic setting. Such corner states in the otherwise gapless system exhibit distinct phase structures depending on the lattice corner and edge geometry, and are completely degenerate with the zero-energy edge states. Remarkably, we find that these “gapless” corner states remain intact at zero-energy even in a finite-sized graphene lattice, protected by chiral symmetry. Unlike corner states in higher-order topological insulators or topological crystalline insulators with certain rotational symmetry, these corner states are localized exclusively to one corner without any coupling to the bulk or other corners, despite long-distance propagation.

Abstract:Based on the tight-binding model calculations and photonic experimental visualization on graphene, we report the domain-wall-induced gapped topological kink states and topological corner states. In graphene, domain walls with gapless topological kink states could be induced either by sublattice symmetry breaking or by lattice deformation. We find that the coexistence of these two mechanisms will induce domain walls with gapped topological kink states. Significantly, the intersection of these two types of domain wall gives rise to topological corner state localized at the crossing point. Through the manipulation of domain walls, we show graphene not only a versatile platform supporting multiple topological corner modes in a controlled manner, but also possessing promising applications such as fabricating topological quantum dots composed of gapped topological kink states and topological corner states.
Topological States Decorated by Twig Boundary in Plasma Photonic Crystals

Abstract:The twig edge states in graphene-like structures are viewed as the fourth states complementary to their zigzag, bearded, and armchair counterparts. In this work, we study a rod-in-plasma system in honeycomb lattice with twig edge truncation under external magnetic fields and lattice scaling and show that twig edge states can exist in different phases of the system, such as quantum Hall phase, quantum spin Hall phase and insulating phase. The twig edge states in the negative permittivity background exhibit robust one-way transmission property immune to backscattering and thus provide a novel avenue for solving the plasma communication blackout problem. Moreover, we demonstrate that corner and edge states can exist within the shrunken structure by modulating the on-site potential of the twig edges. Especially, helical edge states with the unique feature of pseudospin-momentum locking that could be excited by chiral sources are demonstrated at the twig edges. Our results show that the twig edges and interface engineering can bring new opportunities for more flexible manipulation of electromagnetic waves.

Abstract:The edges of graphene and graphene like systems can host localized states with evanescent wave function with properties radically different from those of the Dirac electrons in bulk. This happens in a variety of situations, that are reviewed here. First, zigzag edges host a set of localized non dispersive state at the Dirac energy. At half filling, it is expected that these states are prone to ferromagnetic instability, causing a very interesting type of edge ferromagnetism. Second, graphene under the influence of external perturbations can host a variety of topological insulating phases, including the conventional Quantum Hall effect, the Quantum Anomalous Hall (QAH) and the Quantum Spin Hall phase, in all of which phases conduction can only take place through topologically protected edge states. Here we provide an unified vision of the properties of all these edge states, examined under the light of the same one orbital tight-binding model. We consider the combined action of interactions, spin orbit coupling and magnetic field, which produces a wealth of different physical phenomena. We briefly address what has been actually observed experimentally.

Topological creation and destruction of edge states in photonic graphene

Abstract:We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a topological transition of classical light in "photonic graphene": an array of waveguides arranged in the honeycomb geometry. As the system is uniaxially strained (compressed), the two unique Dirac points (present in the spectrum of conventional graphene) merge and annihilate each other, and a band gap forms. As a result, edge states are created on the zig-zag edge and destroyed on the bearded edge. These results are applicable for any 2D honeycomb-type structure, from carbon-based graphene to photonic lattices and crystals.

Abstract:Systems with engineered flatband spectra are a postulate of high-capacity transmission links and a candidate for high-temperature superconductivity. However, their operation relies on the edge or surface modes susceptible to fluctuations and fabrication errors. While the mode robustness can be enhanced by a combination of Aharonov-Bohm caging and topological insulation, the design of the corresponding flatbands requires approaches beyond the standard $k$-vector-based methods. Here, we propose a synthetic-flux probe as a solution to this problem and a route to the realization of ultra-stable modes. We prove the concept in a laser-fabricated graphene-like ribbon photonic lattice with the band-flattening flux induced by "P" waveguide coupling. The topological non-triviality is witnessed by an integer Zak phase derived from the mean chiral displacement. Mode stability is evidenced by excellent mode localization and the robustness to fabrication tolerances and variations of the input phase. Our results can serve as a basis for the development of multi-flat-band materials for low-energy electronics.

Abstract:Two-dimensional higher-order topology is usually studied in (nearly) particle-hole symmetric models, so that an edge gap can be opened within the bulk one. But more often the edge anticrossing deviates even into the bulk, where corner states are difficult to pinpoint. We address this problem in a graphene-based Z2 topological insulator with spin-orbit coupling and in-plane magnetization both originating from substrates through a Slater -Koster multiorbital model. The gapless helical edge modes cross inside the bulk, where the magnetization -induced edge gap is also located. After demonstrating its second-order nontriviality in bulk topology by a series of evidence, we show that a difference in bulk-edge on-site energy can adiabatically tune the position of the crossing/anticrossing of the edge modes to be inside the bulk gap. This can help unambiguously identify two pairs of topological corner states with nonvanishing energy degeneracy for a rhombic flake. We further find that the obtuse-angle pair is more stable than the acute-angle one.

Abstract:The canonical way to sustain photonic topological edge states relies on the interface formed by topologically trivial and nontrivial photonic crystals that share a common band gap to prevent the coupling of edge states from the radiation continuum of free space. Herein, we report a scheme to achieve bound topological edge states in the continuum at the air edge of a single topologically nontrivial photonic crystal utilizing the physics of bound states in the continuum. These localized states, though existing in the continuum, exhibit topological features inherited from the nontrivial topology of bulk photonic bands, such as pseudospin-momentum locking unidirectional propagation. Microwave experiments are provided to further validate the theoretical predictions. Abstract:Based on a perturbative approach, we propose a simple and efficient method to engineer topological edge states in two dimensional magnetic photonic crystals. The topological edge states in the microstructures can be constructed and varied by altering the parameters of the microstructure according to the fieldenergy distributions of the Bloch states at the related Bloch wave vectors. The validity of the proposed method has been demonstrated by exact numerical calculations through three concrete examples. Our method makes the topological edge states 'designable'.

Abstract:Originating from the investigation of condensed matter states, the concept of quantum Hall effect and quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) has recently been expanded to other field of physics and engineering, e.g., photonics and phononics, giving rise to strikingly unconventional edge modes immune to scattering. Here, we present the plasmonic analog of QSHE in graphene plasmonic crystal (GPC) in mid-infrared frequencies. The band inversion occurs when deforming the honeycomb lattice GPCs, which further leads to the topological band gaps and pseudospin features of the edge states. By overlapping the band gaps with different topologies, we numerically simulated the pseudospin-dependent one-way propagation of edge states. The designed GPC may find potential applications in the fields of topological plasmonics and trigger the exploration of the technique of the pseudospin multiplexing in high-density nanophotonic integrated circuits.
Topological edge states in photonic Floquet insulator with unpaired Dirac cones

Abstract:Topological insulators are most frequently constructed using lattices with specific degeneracies in their linear spectra, such as Dirac points. For a broad class of lattices, such as honeycomb ones, these points and associated Dirac cones generally appear in non-equivalent pairs. Simultaneous breakup of the time-reversal and inversion symmetry in systems based on such lattices may result in the formation of the unpaired Dirac cones in bulk spectrum, but the existence of topologically protected edge states in such structures remains an open problem. Here photonic Floquet insulator on honeycomb lattice with unpaired Dirac cones in its spectrum is introduced that can support unidirectional edge states appearing at the edge between two regions with opposite sublattice detuning. Topological properties of this system are characterized by the nonzero valley Chern number. Remarkably, edge states in this system can circumvent sharp corners without inter-valley scattering even though there is no total forbidden gap in the spectrum. Our results reveal unusual interplay between two different physical mechanisms of creation of topological edge states based on simultaneous breakup of different symmetries of the system.

Abstract:A Dirac point is a linear band crossing point originally used to describe unusual transport properties of materials like graphene. In recent years, there has been a surge of exploration of type-II Dirac/Weyl points using various engineered platforms including photonic crystals, waveguide arrays, metasurfaces, magnetized plasma and polariton micropillars, aiming toward relativistic quantum emulation and understanding of exotic topological phenomena. Such endeavors, however, have focused mainly on linear topological states in real or synthetic Dirac/Weyl materials. We propose and demonstrate nonlinear valley Hall edge (VHE) states in laser-written anisotropic photonic lattices hosting innately the type-II Dirac points. These self-trapped VHE states, manifested as topological gap quasi-solitons that can move along a domain wall unidirectionally without changing their profiles, are independent of external magnetic fields or complex longitudinal modulations, and thus are superior in comparison with previously reported topological edge solitons. Our finding may provide a route for understanding nonlinear phenomena in systems with type-II Dirac points that violate the Lorentz invariance and may bring about possibilities for subsequent technological development in light field manipulation and photonic devices.
