Abstract:We consider the periodic homogenisation problem for the generalised parabolic Anderson model on two dimensional torus. We show that, for the renormalisation that respects Wick ordering, the homogenisation and renormalisation procedures commute. The main novelty is to identify a suitable ansatz for the solution on top of the usual para-controlled ansatz to set up a fixed point problem uniform in the homogenisation parameter. After that, one further utilises cancellations and resonances from the homogenisation oscillations to show convergence of both the solution and flux to the right limits.

Abstract:We consider periodic homogenisation problems for gPAM, $\Phi^{4}_{3}$ and modified KPZ equations. Using Littlewood-Paley blocks, we establish para-products and commutator estimates for generalised Besov spaces associated with self-adjoint elliptic operators. With this, we show that, the homogenisation and renormalisation procedures commute in aforementioned models under suitable assumptions.

Abstract:We consider the homogenisation problem for the $\phi^4_2$ equation on the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$, namely the behaviour as $\varepsilon \to 0$ of the solutions to the equation suggestively written as $$ \partial_t u_\varepsilon - \nabla\cdot {A}(x/\varepsilon,t/\varepsilon^2) \nabla u_\varepsilon = -u^3_\varepsilon +\xi $$ where $\xi$ denotes space-time white noise and $A: \mathbb{T}^2\times \mathbb{R}$ is uniformly elliptic, periodic and Hölder continuous. When the noise is regularised at scale $\delta \ll 1$ we show that any joint limit $\varepsilon,\delta \to 0$ recovers the classical dynamical $\phi^4_2$ model. In certain regimes or if the regularisation is chosen in a specific way adapted to the problem, we show that the counterterms can be chosen as explicit local functions of $A$.

Abstract:In this article, based on probabilistic methods, we discuss periodic homogenization of a class of weakly coupled systems of linear elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations. Under the assumption that the systems have rapidly periodically oscillating coefficients, we first prove that the appropriately centered and scaled continuous component of the associated regime-switching diffusion process converges weakly to a Brownian motion with covariance matrix given in terms of the coefficients of the systems. The homogenization results then follow by employing probabilistic representation of the solutions to the systems and the continuous mapping theorem. The presented results generalize the well-known results related to periodic homogenization of the classical elliptic boundary-value problem and the classical parabolic initial-value problem for a single equation.

The novetly of our result lies in the fact that we allow the second order part of the differential operator to be degenerate in some portion of $\R^d$.\\ Our fully probabilistic method is based on the connection between PDEs and BSDEs with random terminal time and the weak convergence of a class of diffusion processes.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the homogenization of a class of nonlinear nonlocal parabolic equations with time dependent coefficients in a periodic and stationary structure. In the first part, we consider the homogenization problem with a periodic structure. Inspired by the idea of Akagi and Oka for local nonlinear homogenization, by a change of unknown function, we transform the nonlinear nonlocal term in space into a linear nonlocal scaled diffusive term, while the corresponding linear time derivative term becomes a nonlinear one. By constructing some corrector functions, for different time scales and the nonlinear parameter , we obtain that the limit equation is a local nonlinear diffusion equation with coefficients depending on and . In addition, we also consider the homogenization of the nonlocal porous medium equation with non negative initial values and get similar homogenization results. In the second part, we consider the previous problem in a stationary environment and get some similar homogenization results. The novelty of this paper is two folds. First, for the determination equation with a periodic structure, our study complements the results in literature for and . Second, we consider the corresponding equation with a stationary structure.

Abstract:For microscale heterogeneous partial differential equations (PDEs), this article further develops novel theory and methodology for their macroscale mathematical/asymptotic homogenization. This article specifically encompasses the case of quasi-periodic heterogeneity with finite scale separation: no scale separation limit is required. A key innovation herein is to analyse the ensemble of all phase-shifts of the heterogeneity. Dynamical systems theory then frames the homogenization as a slow manifold of the ensemble. Depending upon any perceived scale separation within the quasi-periodic heterogeneity, the homogenization may be done in either one step or two sequential steps: the results are equivalent. The theory not only assures us of the existence and emergence of an exact homogenization at finite scale separation, it also provides a practical systematic method to construct the homogenization to any specified order. For a class of heterogeneities, we show that the macroscale homogenization is potentially valid down to lengths which are just twice that of the microscale heterogeneity! This methodology complements existing well-established results by providing a new rigorous and flexible approach to homogenization that potentially also provides correct macroscale initial and boundary conditions, treatment of forcing and control, and analysis of uncertainty.

Quantitative periodic homogenization for symmetric non-local stable-like operators

Abstract:Homogenization for non-local operators in periodic environments has been studied intensively. So far, these works are mainly devoted to the qualitative results, that is, to determine explicitly the operators in the limit. To the best of authors' knowledge, there is no result concerning the convergence rates of the homogenization for stable-like operators in periodic environments. In this paper, we establish a quantitative homogenization result for symmetric $\alpha$-stable-like operators on $\R^d$ with periodic coefficients. In particular, we show that the convergence rate for the solutions of associated Dirichlet problems on a bounded domain $D$ is of order $$ \varepsilon^{(2-\alpha)/2}\I_{\{\alpha\in (1,2)\}}+\varepsilon^{\alpha/2}\I_{\{\alpha\in (0,1)\}}+\varepsilon^{1/2}|\log \e|^2\I_{\{\alpha=1\}}, $$ while, when the solution to the equation in the limit is in $C^2_c(D)$, the convergence rate becomes $$ \varepsilon^{2-\alpha}\I_{\{\alpha\in (1,2)\}}+\varepsilon^{\alpha}\I_{\{\alpha\in (0,1)\}}+\varepsilon |\log \e|^2\I_{\{\alpha=1\}}. $$ This indicates that the boundary decay behaviors of the solution to the equation in the limit affects the convergence rate in the homogenization.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of the solution to the diffusion equation in a planar domain, perforated by tiny sets of different shapes with a constant perimeter and a uniformly bounded diameter, when the diameter of a basic cell, , goes to 0. This makes the structure of the heterogeneous domain aperiodical. On the boundary of the removed sets (or the exterior to a set of particles, as it arises in chemical engineering), we consider the dynamic unilateral Signorini boundary condition containing a large-growth parameter . We derive and justify the homogenized model when the problem's parameters take the "critical values". In that case, the homogenized problem is universal (in the sense that it does not depend on the shape of the perforations or particles) and contains a "strange term" given by a non-linear, non-local in time, monotone operator H that is defined as the solution to an obstacle problem for an ODE operator. The solution of the limit problem can take negative values even if, for any , in the original problem, the solution is non-negative on the boundary of the perforations or particles.

Homogenization of Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations for multiple species in a porous medium

Abstract:The Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations form a coupled parabolic-elliptic system, which models the transport of charged particles under the influence of diffusion and electric force. In this paper, we rigorously derive a homogenized model for the PNP equations, for the case of multiple species, defined on a periodic porous medium in spatial dimensions two and three. This extends the previous homogenization results for the PNP equations concerning two species. Here, the main difficulty is that the microscopic concentrations remain uniformly bounded in a space with relatively weak regularity. Therefore, the standard Aubin-Lions-Simon-type compactness results for porous media, which give strong convergence of the microscopic solutions, become inapplicable in our weak setting. We overcome this problem by constructing suitable cut-off functions. The cut-off function, together with the previously known energy functional associated with the system, gives us equicontinuity of the microscopic concentrations on the part of the domain where the values of the concentrations do not exceed the height of the cut-off function. Moreover, it turns out that, on the remaining part of the domain where the concentrations are larger than the height of the cut-off function, the application of the energy functional is enough in order to obtain equicontinuity. These arguments eventually yield strong convergence of the microscopic concentrations in $L^1_t L^r_x$, for some $r>2$, enabling us to pass to the limit in the nonlinear drift term. Finally, we derive the homogenized equations by means of two-scale convergence in $L^p_t L^q_x$ setting.

Abstract:In the present paper, we generalize the theory of quantitative homogenization for second-order elliptic systems with rapidly oscillating coefficients in $APW^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, which is the space of almost-periodic functions in the sense of H. Weyl. We obtain the large scale uniform boundary Lipschitz estimate, for both Dirichlet and Neumann problems in $C^{1,\alpha}$ domains. We also obtain large scale uniform boundary Hölder estimates in $C^{1,\alpha}$ domains and $L^2$ Rellich estimates in Lipschitz domains.

On the periodic homogenization of elliptic equations in non-divergence form with large drifts

Abstract:We study the quantitative homogenization of linear second order elliptic equations in non-divergence form with highly oscillating periodic diffusion coefficients and with large drifts, in the so-called ``centered'' setting where homogenization occurs and the large drifts contribute to the effective diffusivity. Using the centering condition and the invariant measures associated to the underlying diffusion process, we transform the equation into divergence form with modified diffusion coefficients but without drift. The latter is in the standard setting for which quantitative homogenization results have been developed systematically. An application of those results then yields quantitative estimates, such as the convergence rates and uniform Lipschitz regularity, for equations in non-divergence form with large drifts.

Abstract:Proving homogenization has been a subtle issue for geometric equations due to the discontinuity when the gradient vanishes. A sufficient condition for periodic homogenization using perturbed correctors is suggested in the literature Caffarelli and Monneau (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 212:503–574, 2014) to overcome this difficulty. However, some noncoercive equations do not satisfy this condition. In this note, we prove homogenization of geometric equations without using perturbed correctors, and therefore we conclude homogenization for the noncoercive equations. Also, we provide a rate of periodic homogenization of coercive geometric equations by utilizing the fact that they remain coercive under perturbation. We also present an example that homogenizes with a rate slower than .

Abstract:We study asymptotic behavior of the bottom point of the spectrum of convolution type operators in environments with locally periodic microstructure. We show that its limit is described by an additive eigenvalue problem for Hamilton-Jacobi equation. In the periodic case we establish a more accurate two-term asymptotic formula.

Abstract:We study the rate of convergence in periodic homogenization for convex Hamilton--Jacobi equations with multiscales, where the Hamiltonian $H=H(x, y, p): \mathbb{R}^n \times \mathbb{T}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R }$ depends on both of the spatial variable and the oscillatory variable. In particular, we show that for the Cauchy problem, the rate of convergence is $O(\sqrt{\epsilon})$ by optimal control formulas, scale separations and curve cutting techniques. We also show the rate $O(\sqrt{\epsilon})$ of homogenization for the static problem based on the same idea. Additionally, we provide examples that illustrate the rate of convergence for the Cauchy problem is optimal.
