Abstract:An advanced digital backpropagation (ADBP) algorithm is proposed to compensate fiber nonlinearities in subcarrier-multiplexing (SCM) systems. We derive the analytical expression and describe the implementation of the ADBP. In addition, the computational complexity of the ADBP as well as the conventional low-pass filter assisted DBP (LDBP) is analyzed and compared. In a 34.94 Gbaud/s single channel SCM transmission experiment, we demonstrate that the proposed ADBP with only two steps (40 spans/step for QPSK at 6400 km and 16 spans/step for 16QAM at 2560 km) has a comparable performance to the LDBP algorithm with 40 steps (2 spans/step) for QPSK and 8 steps (4 spans/step) for 16QAM, respectively. Moreover, compared to single carrier (SC) systems using only linear compensation (LC), the ADBP algorithm with 40 spans/step for QPSK and 16 spans/step for 16QAM can extend the maximum reach by 49.7% and 27.3% for the two formats, respectively. The contribution to the reach extension consists of 19.7% and 23.6% which are attributable to the nonlinear compensation algorithm when compared to SCM systems using LC for QPSK and 16QAM, respectively. The remainder of the improvements are attributable to the use of the SCM scheme. Finally, simulations of 60 Gbaud/s systems show additional improvements using the ADBP schemes compared to the LDBP schemes, indicating the benefits of ADBP in future high capacity optical transmission systems.

Abstract:Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) scheme is considered to be one promising non-orthogonal multiple access technology for the future fifth generation (5G) communications. Due to the sparse nature, message passing algorithm (MPA) has been used at the receiver to achieve close to maximum likelihood (ML) detection performance with much lower complexity. However, the complexity order of MPA is still exponential with the size of codebook and the degree of signal superposition on a given resource element. In this paper, we propose a novel low complexity iterative receiver based on expectation propagation algorithm (EPA), which reduces the complexity order from exponential to linear. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed EPA receiver achieves nearly the same block error rate (BLER) performance as the conventional message passing algorithm (MPA) receiver with orders less complexity.

Abstract:Fully blind adaptive digital backpropagation (DBP) based on a steepest descent algorithm is proposed. For homogeneous links, a two-parameter blind adaptive (TBA) scheme is presented, which assumes that all DBP steps have the same nonlinear scaling factor and filter bandwidth parameter. For heterogeneous links, a multiparameter blind adaptive (MBA) scheme is proposed to achieve the optimal performance by adapting chromatic dispersion, nonlinear scaling factor, and bandwidth parameter of each DBP step. The principles and performance of the proposed schemes are presented for low-pass filter assisted DBP, denoted as LDBP, in single carrier systems and cross-phase modulation model based DBP in subcarrier-multiplexing (SCM) systems, denoted as SCM-DBP. In a 34.94 Gbaud dual-polarization 16QAM single channel transmission experiment with a homogeneous 2560 km link, we demonstrate that both TBA-LDBP and TBA-SCM-DBP can converge to optimal performance with various system configurations. In addition, for heterogeneous links, we show in simulations and experiments that MBA-LDBP and MBA-SCM-DBP achieve 0.2-1.4 dB improvement compared to their TBA counterparts.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a single-step digital back propagation (DBP) algorithm for metro and regional transmissions with high order modulation formats. Based on subcarrier-multiplexing (SCM)-DBP, two modifications are made to improve performance and reduce complexity for the targeted link scenarios. First, an infinite impulse response (IIR) filter is adopted in self-subcarrier nonlinear compensation. Second, the second stage chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation is incorporated into an existing adaptive filter. Through experiment, we demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme, denoted as M-SCM-DBP, for single channel 34.94-GBd SCM PDM-32QAM transmission. With 86.3% complexity reduction compared with the low-pass filter assisted DBP, the proposed M-SCM-DBP achieves 0.6-dB Q2 improvement for SCM-PDM-32QAM transmission over 960-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF). The reach extension of 36% to 1220-km is achieved with only 30.5 complex multiplications per sample, in comparison with the linear compensation scheme. Since the adaptive filter is used to simultaneously compensate 50% CD and other linear impairments, we also investigate the required number of filter taps and its polarization tracking ability.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose two modifications to reduce the complexity of the subcarrier-multiplexing (SCM) based digital backpropagation (DBP) for high symbol rate SCM systems. The first one is to reduce the number of interfering subcarriers (RS-SCM-DBP) when evaluating the cross-subcarrier nonlinearity (CSN). The second one is to replace the original frequency domain CSN filters with the infinite impulse response (IIR) filters (IIR-RS-SCM-DBP) in the CSN compensation. The performance of the proposed schemes are numerically evaluated in three-channel dual-polarization (DP) 16QAM wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmissions. The aggregate symbol rate for each channel is 120 GBaud and the transmission distance is 1600 km. For the SCM system with 16 subcarriers, the IIR-RS-SCM-DBP with only 4 interfering subcarriers and 2 steps can achieve a 0.3 dB Q-factor improvement in the WDM transmission. Compared to the original SCM-DBP, the proposed IIR-RS-SCM-DBP reduces the complexity by 48% at a performance loss of only 0.07 dB.

Abstract:A split digital backpropagation (DBP) scheme for digital subcarrier-multiplexing (SCM) transmissions, denoted as SSDBP, is proposed and studied in both experiments and simulations. The implementation of the SSDBP is split at the transmitter and the receiver, leveraging existing chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation blocks to reduce complexity. We experimentally demonstrate that the SSDBP, with a complexity reduction up to 50% compared to the original receiver based SCM-DBP, can achieve a nonlinear compensation Q2 gain of 0.7-dB and 0.9-dB for 1920-km and 2880-km 34.94-GBd single channel PDM-16QAM transmissions, respectively. The maximum reach can be extended by 31.6% using 2-step SSDBP with only 27.5 complex multiplications per sample. Meanwhile, using 3-step SSDBP, the reach extension can be increased to 40.8%. The benefit of implementing part of SSDBP at the transmitter is experimentally validated with 0.1-dB Q2 improvement at 4-dBm launch power. We also numerically investigate the impact of the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) resolution and fiber parameter uncertainties on the nonlinear compensation performance of the SSDBP.

Abstract:The performance of digital backpropagation (DBP) equalization when applied over multiple channels to compensate for the nonlinear impairments in optical fiber transmission systems is investigated. The impact of a suboptimal multichannel DBP operation is evaluated, where implementation complexity is reduced by varying parameters such as the number of nonlinear steps per span and sampling rate. Results have been obtained for a reference system consisting of a 5×32 Gbaud PDM-16QAM superchannel with 33 GHz subchannel spacing and Nyquist pulse shaping under long-haul transmission. The reduction in the effectiveness of the algorithm is evaluated and compared with the ideal gain expected from the cancellation of the nonlinear signal distortion. The detrimental effects of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) with varying DBP bandwidth are also studied. Key parameters which ensure the effectiveness of multichannel DBP are identified.

Abstract:The constant modulus algorithm(CMA) is a widely used algorithm for blind equalization of QAM signals,but it exhibits slow convergence rate,large steady state mean square error and phase-blind nature.To overcome the defaults of CMA,a new dual mode blind equalization algorithm is proposed based on the modified constant modulus algorithm(MCMA) according to the study on the property of QAM signals,the algorithm switches between modified constant modulus algorithm(MCMA) and decision directed(DD) algorithm according the regions where the signal lies in the constellation plane and utilizes the merits of MCMA and DD algorithm.The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve the phase recovery effectively and speed up the convergence rate and decrease the steady state MSE greatly and is suitable for QAM signals.

Abstract:Digital backpropagation (DBP) is a commonly used method to compensate for the nonlinear impairments of optical fiber channels in the electrical domain, offering a new approach to enhancing the data capacity without affecting the system performance. However, due to the repeated Fourier transform and inverse transform of the split-step Fourier method (SSFM), the complexity of DBP algorithm has increased significantly. In this paper, a correlated backpropagation algorithm with the separation of the walk-off effect is developed, which improves the computational step and significantly reduces the complexity of the algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that in a 6-channel PDM-16QAM system, the proposed hybrid algorithm reduces the computational complexity by 73.96 % compared to the traditional DBP algorithm for an 800 km transmission.

Abstract:A low-complexity one-step digital back-propagation (DBP) scheme is proposed to mitigate intrachannel and interchannel fiber nonlinearities in high-capacity single span transmissions. Compared with conventional coherent receivers, the only additional calculation is a low-complexity nonlinear phase noise compensation stage operated between bulk chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation and adaptive equalizer. The required number of real additions and multiplications per sample are only (6N + 2) and (2N + 6), respectively, where N is the number of compensated wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) channels. With the proposed one-step DBP, we demonstrate that the nonlinear noise can be suppressed by >60% in single channel experiments and >40% in seven-channel WDM simulations.

Abstract:The constant modulus algorithm (CMA) has been widely used in the blind equalization of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals, but it has slow convergence rate and large steady state mean square error and the phase blind nature. In this paper, a modified constant modulus algorithm which incorporates a stop and go technique is proposed. The proposed algorithm can speed up convergence rate and decrease steady state mean square error and correct phase error and frequency offset simultaneously. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in improving convergence behavior and bit error rate (BER) performance.
A New Twist on Low-Complexity Digital Backpropagation

Abstract:This work proposes a novel low-complexity digital backpropagation (DBP) method, with the goal of optimizing the trade-off between backpropagation accuracy and complexity. The method combines a split step Fourier method (SSFM)-like structure with a simplifed logarithmic perturbation method to obtain a high accuracy with a small number of DBP steps. Subband processing and asymmetric steps with optimized splitting ratio are also employed to further reduce the number of steps. The first part of the manuscript is dedicated to the derivation of a simplified logaritmic-perturbation model for the propagation of a dual-polarization multiband signal in a fiber, which serves as a theoretical background for the development of the proposed coupled-band enhanced SSFM (CBESSFM). Next, the manuscript presents a digital signal processing algorithm for the implementation of DBP based on a discrete-time version of the model and an overlap-and-save processing strategy. A detailed analysis of the computational complexity of the algorithm is also presented. Finally, the performance and complexity of the proposed DBP method are investigated through numerical simulations. In a wavelength division multiplexing system over a 15 x 80km single mode fiber link, the proposed CB-ESSFM achieves a gain of about 1 dB over simple dispersion compensation with only 15 steps (corresponding to about 680 real multiplications per 2D symbol), with an improvement of 0.9 dB w.r.t. conventional SSFM and almost 0.4 dB w.r.t. our previously proposed ESSFM. Significant gains are obtained also at lower complexity. For instance, the gain reduces to a still significant value of 0.34 dB when a single DBP step is employed, requiring just 75 real multiplications per 2D symbol. A similar analysis is performed also for longer links, confirming the good performance of the proposed method w.r.t. the others.

Abstract:In this paper, a low complexity time domain semi-blind algorithm is proposed to estimate and track the time varying MIMO OFDM channels. First, the proposed least mean squares (LMS) based algorithm is developed for the training mode and then is extended for the blind mode of the operation by combining with the decision direction (DD) or adaptive Bussgang algorithm (ABA) techniques. In the blind mode, because of decision errors, a smaller step size is considered for the LMS algorithm and the channel estimation is run a few times to improve its precision. In each round of the estimation in the blind mode, the step size is decreased to form some kind of annealing. Both DD LMS and ABA LMS techniques are simulated and compared to the full training case and MSE of channel estimation error is considered as comparison criterion. It is shown for 2x4 DD LMS and for 4x4 ABA LMS algorithms present near full training case estimation error. Of course in some scenarios the former proposed technique performs better and in other scenarios the latter is better and therefore combine of it can be very interesting in all channel conditions.

Adaptive digital back propagation exploiting adjoint-based optimization for fiber-optic communications

Abstract:This work proposes a novel and powerful adaptive digital back propagation (A-DBP) method with a fast adaption process. Given that the total transmission distance is known, the proposed A-DBP algorithm blindly compensates for the linear and nonlinear distortions of optical fiber transmission systems and networks, without knowing the launch power and channel parameters. An adjoint-based optimization (ABO) technique is proposed to significantly accelerate the parameters estimation of the A-DBP. The ABO algorithm utilizes a sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method coupled with an adjoint sensitivity analysis (ASA) approach to rapidly solve the A-DBP training problem. The design parameters are optimized using the minimum overhead of only one extra system simulation. Regardless of the number of A-DBP design parameters, the derivatives of the training objective function with respect to all parameters are estimated using only one extra adjoint system simulation per optimization iterate. This is contrasted with the traditional finite-difference (FD)-based optimization methods whose sensitivity analysis calculations cost per iterate scales linearly with the number of parameters. The robustness, performance, and efficiency of the proposed A-DBP algorithm are demonstrated through applying it to mitigate the distortions of 4-span and 20-span optical fiber communication systems. Coarse-mesh A-DBPs with less number of virtual spans are also used to significantly reduce the computational complexity of the equalizer, achieving compensation performance higher than that obtained using the coarse-mesh DBP with the exact channel parameters and full number of virtual spans.
