Abstract:In this paper, we design a self-interference cancellation (SIC) scheme for in-band full-duplex (IBFD) radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems based on wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) architectures. By using a single dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM), over various bands up to 25 GHz, this proposed SIC system can simultaneously cancel the in-band downlink (DL) self-interference and modulate the recovered uplink (UL) radio frequency (RF) signal. OFDM-RF signals are used to study the cancellation performances of optical SIC system for the first time. Experimental results show more than 32-dB cancellation depth over 250-MHz bandwidth within 1-GHz RF band, as well as 300-MHz within 2.4-GHz and 400-MHz within 5-GHz band. As for 2.4-GHz RF band, 390.63-Mbps 16-QAM OFDM UL signal buried by strong in-band DL OFDM signal is well recovered. For broadband applications, more than 27-dB cancellation depth is achieved over 10 MHz similar to 25 GHz wideband, so that up to 25 GHz RF band can be expanded for this IBFD WDM-RoF system. Abstract:Combined in-band full duplex-multiple input multiple output (IBFD–MIMO) technology can significantly improve spectrum efficiency and data throughput, and has broad application prospects in communications, radar, the Internet of Things (IoT), and other fields. Targeting the self-interference (SI) issue in microwave photonic-based IBFD–MIMO communication systems, a microwave photonic self-interference cancellation (SIC) method applied to the narrowband 2 × 2 IBFD–MIMO communication system was proposed, simulated, and analyzed. An interleaver was used to construct a polarization multiplexing dual optical frequency comb with a frequency shifting effect, generating a dual-channel reference interference signal. The programmable spectrum processor was employed for filtering, attenuation, and phase-shifting operations, ensuring amplitude and phase matching to eliminate the two self-interference (SI) signals. The simulation results show that the single-frequency SIC depth exceeds 45.8 dB, and the narrowband SIC depth under 30 MHz bandwidth exceeds 32.7 dB. After SIC, the desired signal, employing a 4QAM modulation format, can be demodulated with an error vector magnitude (EVM) as low as 4.7%. Additionally, further channel expansion and system performance optimization are prospected.

Abstract:A photonic approach for radio-frequency (RF) self-interference cancellation (SIC) incorporated in an in-band full-duplex radio-over-fiber system is proposed. A dual-polarization binary phase-shift keying modulator is used for dual-polarization multiplexing at the central office (CO). A local oscillator signal and an intermediate-frequency signal carrying the downlink data are single-sideband modulated on the two polarization directions of the modulator, respectively. The optical signal is then transmitted to the remote unit, where the optical signals in the two polarization directions are split into two parts. One part is detected to generate the up-converted downlink RF signal, and the other part is re-modulated by the uplink RF signal and the self-interference, which is then transmitted back to the CO for the signal down-conversion and SIC via the optical domain signal adjustment and balanced detection. The functions of SIC, frequency up-conversion, down-conversion, and fiber transmission with dispersion immunity are all incorporated in the system. An experiment is performed. Cancellation depths of more than 39 dB for the single-tone signal and more than 20 dB for the 20-MBaud 16 quadrature amplitude modulation signal are achieved in the back-to-back case. The performance of the system does not have a significant decline when a section of 4.1-km optical fiber is incorporated.

Abstract:This paper presents a simple 2 x 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) 60-GHz radio-over-fiber system. Due to the proposed specific frequency arrangement of driving signals, each optical transmitter requires only a single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator with 3-dB bandwidth of less than 35 GHz. This arrangement of frequencies can increase the tolerance of optical signals to dispersion-induced RF fading, thereby extending fiber transmission distance. Unfortunately, this scheme leads to signal-to-signal beating interference (SSBI), which can deteriorate system performance. Thus, we employed a 2 x 2 MIMO scheme to enhance data capacity by combining two data streams and two corresponding SSBIs prior to signal demodulation. We also developed a novel iterative equalization technique to mitigate SSBI in the MIMO system. The proposed system achieved a maximum capacity of 55.9-Gb/s in the transmission of 7-GHz orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signals over 12-km fiber and 3.5-m air transmission using a bit-loading algorithm.

Abstract:In band full-duplex (IBFD) wireless systems increase the RF spectrum efficiency and have become one of the key technologies in the future wireless communication systems. But it is only possible if the radio-frequency (RF) self-interference (SI) generated by the transmitter is sufficiently mitigated. SI cancellation becomes more difficult while the bandwidth and frequency increases. Herein, a novel approach to photonic-assisted RF SI cancellation based on optical processing is proposed for IBFD wireless systems. In this scheme, reference signal and the received signal are converted to optical signals by two Mach-Zehnder modulators. The phase and amplitude between reference and received signal are matched by optical spectrum processing, and the delay time is aligned by finely tuning the tunable optical delay line (TODL). The broadband interference signal within the received signal is removed in the optical domain. Experimental results show more than 30 dB cancellation depth in 10 GHz bandwidth. Besides, IBFD transmission performance based on 16-QAM for different symbol rates and different signal-to–interference ratios (SIR) are also demonstrated, as well as 92.6 dB•Hz2/3 spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) is obtained.
Hybrid Wideband Multipath Self-Interference Cancellation with an LMS Pre-Adaptive Filter for In-Band Full-Duplex OFDM Signal Transmission.

Abstract:A wideband multipath self-interference cancellation (SIC) system employing both dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator-based analog SIC and least mean square (LMS) algorithm-based pre-adaptive filter digital SIC is proposed and demonstrated for the cancellation of multipath self-interference (SI) and facilitation of in-band full-duplex (IBFD) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signal transmission. The multipath effect is an unavoidable challenge in SIC due to the dynamic and unpredictable properties in each path, as well as the need for separate matching components for compensating for each path. In this Letter, an LMS algorithm-based adaptive filter is used as a pre-equalizer to adapt and generate the matching signal to the closest approximate of the multipath SI signal. The adaptation is based on the minimization of the error signal generated from the matching signal and multipath SI signal in the LMS algorithm. With the introduction of the LMS adaptive filter to the analog SIC, an additional 9 dB cancellation improvement is obtained, resulting in a total of 32 dB cancellation depth over a cancellation bandwidth of 2.7 GHz at a center frequency of 1.65 GHz. To the best of our knowledge, the achieved performance is by far the widest cancellation bandwidth in a multipath SIC system, which is essential in a large bandwidth and high data rate transmission system. With the help of the proposed LMS adaptive filter digital SIC assisted analog SIC located at the remote node, power-efficient IBFD transmission of an OFDM signal through a 25 km fiber is experimentally demonstrated with a 6 dB bit error rate and 8% error vector magnitude improvements.

Abstract:In this paper, we aim at improving the transmission reliability of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) enabled full-duplex (FD) system. To this end, we investigate the implementation of coordinate interleaved orthogonal design (CIOD) based space-time block code in bidirectional FD system, and propose a novel scheme named CI-FD. Theoretical analysis proves that this scheme is able to achieve the full diversity gain of the CIOD technique when the self-interference (SI) of the FD system is effectively suppressed, while maintaining the same spectral efficiency and decoding complexity as the original FD system. Moreover, two performance enhancing schemes based on CI-FD are proposed: 1) CI-FD with antenna selection (AS) that further increases the diversity gain, and 2) CI-FD with spatial modulation (SM) that provides an additional spectral efficiency gain. Upper bounds on the average bit error probabilities of the proposed schemes are derived and their error-free information transmission capabilities are also investigated. Simulation results verify our analysis and demonstrate the advantages of the proposed schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate and study a wideband in-band full-duplex (IBFD) wireless communication system based on optical self-interference cancellation (SIC). The optical SIC performances based on antennas for broadband IBFD are firstly evaluated within high frequency bands (> 10GHz). In this system, two electro-absorption-modulated lasers (EMLs) and a balanced photo-detector (BPD) are employed to remove the wideband self-interference within received wireless signal. By theoretical derivation and experimental verification, the impact factors of SIC are analyzed, especially for non-flatness wireless channel case. Experimental results show more than 30-dB cancellation depth in 100-MHz bandwidth with employment of horn antennas. Besides, IBFD transmission performance based on OFDM signals for different bandwidth with 11.15-GHz center frequency is also demonstrated, and ~52.2- dB•Hz2/3 spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) is obtained.
An Effective Self-Interference Cancellation Scheme for Spatial Modulated Full Duplex Systems

Abstract:In this paper, an effective self-interference (SI) cancellation scheme operated in the digital domain is proposed for the newly-emerging spatial modulated full duplex (SMFD) system. In the proposal, the SMFD receiver performs the SI cancellation through a combination of signals received in successive time slots by resorting to the properties of the SMFD system, i.e., the SI channel is reciprocal and the transmitted data is known by both the transmitter and the receiver. To achieve the ultimate performance of the proposal, however, the transmitted symbols need to be rotated and the number of time slots involved in the SI cancellation has to be carefully chosen to balance the receiver complexity and the system performance. These issues are also discussed in great detail. Monte-Carlo simulations on the error-free information transmission capability of the SMFD system with the proposed SI cancellation scheme over Rayleigh fading channels are conducted and advantages are revealed.

Abstract:This paper presents the novel design and implementation of our 2 ×2 full duplex MIMO radios for LTE system. Our design first uses multi-tap analog cancellation to reduce self-interference in RF domain. 4 multi-tap cancellers are used respectively for the 4 self-interference chains existed in a radio. RF power detectors and ADCs are introduced to indicate the residual self-interference power arriving at receivers. Multidimensional gradient descent search algorithm aiming at minimizing residual self-interference power is used to find out the optimal setting for the adjustable attenuation, time delay and phase shift of each tap in multi-tap cancellers. In the further digital cancellation, due to the fact that the non-linear component and noise arisen from transmitters are significant in residual self-interference and difficult to be cancelled, we use additional receivers to get the feedback of local transmitted RF signals, and therefore the non-linear component and noise hided in them are known and can easily be cancelled. The feedback makes it not necessary to estimate non-linear component and transmitter noise in digital cancellation algorithm and thus makes the algorithm simple. Actually, a simple channel estimation based method utilizing the feedback can accurately reconstruct self-interference. Then the reconstructed self-interference is subtracted from received signals to complete the digital cancellation. Our implementation can cancel the self-interference caused by 23dBm LTE transmitted signals to the receiver noise floor of -90dBm and achieve 220Mbps full duplex communication.

Abstract:A digital-assisted photonic analog wideband radio-frequency multipath self-interference cancellation (SIC) and frequency downconversion method based on a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator and the recursive least square (RLS) algorithm is proposed and demonstrated for in-band full-duplex systems. Besides the reference for the direct-path self-interference (SI) signal, the RLS algorithm is used to construct another reference for the residual SI signal from the direct path and the SI signals from the reflection paths. The proposed method can solve the performance limitation in the previously reported SIC methods of constructing the multipath SI signal using a single reference caused by the limited dynamic range of the digital-to-analog converter when the direct-path SI signal is much stronger than the sub-weak reflection-path SI signals. An experiment is performed. When the carrier frequency of the multipath SI signal is 10 GHz and the direct-path SI signal is much stronger than the sub-weak multipath SI signal, the cancellation depths of about 26.7 and 26.1 dB are realized with SI baud rates of 0.5 and 1 Gbaud. When the direct-path SI signal and sub-weak multipath SI signal own closer power, the corresponding cancellation depths are 24.7 and 20.8 dB, respectively.

Abstract:Compared with the traditional frequency division duplex and time division duplex, the in-band full-duplex (IBFD) technology can double the spectrum utilization efficiency and information transmission rate. However, radio frequency (RF) self-interference is a key issue to be resolved for the application of IBFD. The photonic RF self-interference cancellation (SIC) scheme has the advantages of wide bandwidth, high amplitude and time delay tuning precision, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. To meet the requirements of the new generation of mobile terminals and satellite payloads, the photonic RF SIC system is desired to be miniaturization, integration and low power consumption. In this paper, the integrated photonic RF SIC scheme is proposed and demonstrated on silicon-based platform. By utilizing the opposite bias points of the on-chip dual Mach-Zehnder modulators, the phase inversion relationship for SIC is realized over a broad frequency band. The time delay structure combining the optically switched waveguide and compact spiral waveguide enables continuous tuning of time over a wide bandwidth. The optical amplitude adjuster provides efficient amplitude control with a large dynamic range. After being packaged with optical, direct current and RF design, the photonic RF SIC chip exhibits the interference cancellation capabilities across L, S, C, X, Ku, K, and Ka bands. In the S and C bands, a cancellation depth exceeding 20 dB was measured across a bandwidth of 4.8 GHz. An impressive cancellation depth of over 40 dB was achieved within a bandwidth of 80 MHz at central frequency of 2 GHz. For the application of over-the-air IBFD communication at the newly promulgated center frequency of 6 GHz for 5G communication, the cancellation depth of 21.7 dB was demonstrated in the bandwidth of 100 MHz and the low power signals of interest were recovered successfully.

Abstract:Full-duplex has emerged as a promising technology that enables a communication node to transmit and receive at the same time and same frequency band. One limitation of full-duplex is that the self-interference (SI) is very strong. In this paper, an effective SI cancellation scheme operated in the digital domain is proposed. It is facilitated by the property that the SI channel is reciprocal and the transmitted data is known by both the transmitter and the receiver. It converts the strong SI to the inter-symbol interference through a combination of the signals received in successive time slots. This conversion leads to a reduction in the number of independent signal flows but can be partially compensated for by transmitting more bits using spatial modulation and involving more time slots in the SI cancellation, which enhances the achievable rate. To achieve optimal performance, the transmitted symbols at one node need to be artificially rotated. We also derive a closed-form expression for an upper bound on the average bit error rate, and its error-free information transmission capability is investigated. Monte Carlo simulations over Rayleigh fading channels between two nodes are conducted and advantages are revealed.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a 2 × 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless over fiber transmission system. Seamless translation of two orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals on dual optical polarization states into wireless MIMO transmission at 795.5 Mbit/s net data rate is enabled by using digital training-based channel estimation. A net spectral efficiency of 2.55 bit/s/Hz is achieved.

Abstract:Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and full-duplex (FD) are promising candidates for achieving the spectral efficiency to meet the needs of 5G communications. One essential key to realizing practical FD massive MIMO systems is how to effectively mitigate the self-interference (SI). Conventionally, however, the performance comparison of different SI methods by reflecting the actual channel characteristics was insufficient in the literature. Accordingly, this paper presents a performance analysis of SI cancellation (SIC) methods in FD massive MIMO systems. Analytical and numerical results confirm that, in an imperfect channel-estimation case, the ergodic rates performance of the spatial suppression in the uplink outperforms those of the SI subtraction, due to the correlation between the precoder and the estimation error of the SI channel. In addition, we discuss which method performs better under different given system constraints such as uplink and downlink sum rates, the total transmit power, and the power scaling law.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a hybrid analog optical self-interference cancellation (OSIC) and baseband digital SIC (DSIC) system for over-the-air in-band full-duplex (IBFD) wireless communication. Analog OSIC system is based on optical delay line, electro-absorption modulation lasers (EMLs) and balanced photodetector (BPD), which has the properties of high adjusting precision and broad processing bandwidth. With the help of baseband DSIC, the cancellation depth limitation of OSIC can be mitigated so as to achieve deeper total SIC depth. Experimental results show about 20-dB depth by OSIC and 10-dB more depth by DSIC over 1GHz broad baseband, so that the signal of interest (SOI) overlapped by wideband self-interference (SI) signal is better recovered compared to the IBFD system with OSIC or DSIC only. The hybrid of OSIC and DSIC takes advantages of the merits of optical devices and digital processors to achieve deep cancellation depth over broad bandwidth.

Abstract:This paper proposes a 2x2 MIMO OFDM Radio-over-Fiber scheme based on optical subcarrier multiplexing and 60-GHz MIMO wireless transmission. We also schematically investigated the principle of optical subcarrier multiplexing, which is based on a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM). In our simulation result, combining two MIMO OFDM signals to drive DP-MZM gives rise to the PAPR augmentation of less than 0.4 dB, which mitigates nonlinear distortion. Moreover, we applied a Levin-Campello bit-loading algorithm to compensate for the uneven frequency responses in the V-band. The resulting system achieves OFDM signal rates of 61.5-Gbits/s with BER of 10(-3) over 25-km SMF transmission followed by 3-m wireless transmission. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:An optical approach to cancel the radio frequency self-interference for an in-band full-duplex radio-over-fiber system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on two Mach-Zehnder modulators and a balanced photodetector (BPD). The cancellation depth is larger than 50 dB and 24 dB for the single frequency and for a wideband signal, respectively. The application of the BPD eliminates the common mode noise and reduces no system flexibility because signal transmission is in one optical fiber by polarization multiplexing technology, instead of two fibers in the traditional self-interference cancellation system with a BPD. In addition, with no electrical delay and attenuation applied, the operational frequency band and cancellation depth are not confined by electronic devices.

Abstract:We report a photonic approach to achieve simultaneous radio frequency (RF) self-interference cancellation (SIC) and frequency downconversion with immunity to power fading based on an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) for an in-band full-duplex (IBFD) radio-over-fiber (ROF) system. A dual-drive MachZehnder modulator (DDMZM) in a polarization-division multiplexing MachZehnder modulator (PDM-MZM) is used to cancel the RF self-interference (SI) signal and generate optical carrier-suppressed double sidebands (CS-DSBs) of the signal of interest (SOI). Meanwhile, another DDMZM in the PDM-MZM is used to construct an OEO loop to generate optical CS-DSBs of the local oscillation (LO) signal. After detection at a photodetector (PD), a frequency downconverted signal is recovered with the RF self-interference cancellation (SIC). The proposed scheme can directly cancel the RF SI signal in the optical domain, meaning that it can overcome the limitation of SIC in the electrical domain. With the phase compensation introduced by a polarization controller, the desired signal is unaffected by the power fading over fiber transmission, which is significant for IBFD ROF systems. In addition, instead of an external microwave source, an OEO loop is used to generate an LO signal with a high spectral purity, which is very promising for integrated microwave photonics systems.
