Abstract:Let $a,b\in\mathbb N=\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ and $\lambda\in\{2,3\}$. We show that $4^a(4b+1)$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb N$ such that $x+2y+\lambda z$ is a positive square. Abstract:The well-known Lagrangeu0027s four-square theorem states that any integer $ninmathbb{N}={0,1,2,...}$ can be written as the sum of four squares. Recently, Z.-W. Sun investigated the representations of $n$ as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with certain linear restrictions involving the integer variables $x,y,z,w$. In this paper, via the theory of quadratic forms, we further study the representations $n=x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ (resp., $n=x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$) with certain linear restrictions involving primes. For example, we obtain the following results: (i) Each positive integer $nu003e1$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ ($x,y,z,winmathbb N$) with $x+y$ prime. (ii) Every positive integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ ($x,y,z,winmathbb N$) with $x+2y$ prime. (iii) Let $k$ be any positive integer, and let $dge 2^{k-1}$ be an odd integer with $4d^2+1$ prime. Then any sufficiently large integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ $(x,y,z,winmathbb N)$ with $x+2dy=p^k$ for some prime $p$.

Abstract: Let $m$ be any positive integer, and let $\lambda\in\{2,3\}$. We show that $m^2$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w$ nonnegative integers such that $x+2y+\lambda z$ is a positive square. We also pose some open conjectures; for example, we conjecture that any positive odd integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ and $x+2y+3z\in\{2^a:\ a=1,2,3,\ldots\}$.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate mixed sums of squares and triangular numbers. By means of q-series, we prove that any natural number n can be written as x + (2y) + Tz with x, y, z ∈ Z and Tz = z(z + 1)/2, this is stronger than a conjecture of Chen. Also, we can express n in any of the following forms: x + 2y + Tz , x 2 + 2y + 2Tz , x 2 + 2y + 4Tz , x 2 + 4y + 2Tz , 2x + 2y + Tz , x 2 + 2Ty + 2Tz , x 2 + 4Ty + Tz , x 2 + 4Ty + 2Tz , 2x + Ty + Tz , 2x 2 + 2Ty + Tz , 2x 2 + 4Ty + Tz , Tx + 4Ty + Tz , 2Tx + 2Ty + Tz , 2Tx + 4Ty + Tz . Concerning the converse we establish several theorems and make some conjectures.

Abstract:Let a,b,c be positive integers. It is known that there are infinitely many positive integers not representated by ax^2+by^2+cz^2 with x,y,z∈ℤ. In contrast, we conjecture that any natural number is represented by ⌊ x^2/a⌋+⌊ y^2/b⌋ +⌊ z^2/c⌋ with x,y,z∈ℤ if (a,b,c)≠(1,1,1),(2,2,2), and that any natural number is represented by ⌊ T_x/a⌋+⌊ T_y/b⌋+⌊ T_z/c⌋ with x,y,z∈ℤ, where T_x denotes the triangular number x(x+1)/2. We confirm this general conjecture in some special cases; in particular, we prove that {x^2+y^2+⌊z^2/5⌋: x,y,z∈ℤ 2∤ y}={1,2,3,…} and {⌊x^2/m⌋+⌊y^2/m⌋+⌊z^2/m⌋:x,y,z∈ℤ} ={0,1,2,…} m=5,6,15. We also pose several conjectures for further research; for example, we conjecture that any integer can be written as x^4-y^3+z^2, where x, y and z are positive integers.

Abstract:In this paper we first investigate for what positive integers a,b,c every nonnegative integer n can be written as x(ax+1)+y(by+1)+z(cz+1) with x,y,z integers. We show that (a,b,c) can be either of the following seven triples(1,2,3),(1,2,4),(1,2,5),(2,2,4),(2,2,5),(2,3,3),(2,3,4), and conjecture that any triple (a,b,c) among(2,2,6),(2,3,5),(2,3,7),(2,3,8),(2,3,9),(2,3,10) also has the desired property. For integers 0⩽b⩽c⩽d⩽a with a>2, we prove that any nonnegative integer can be written as x(ax+b)+y(ay+c)+z(az+d) with x,y,z integers, if and only if the quadruple (a,b,c,d) is among(3,0,1,2),(3,1,1,2),(3,1,2,2),(3,1,2,3),(4,1,2,3).

Abstract:The well-known Lagrange's four-square theorem states that any integer n∈ℕ={0,1,2,...} can be written as the sum of four squares. Recently, Z.-W. Sun investigated the representations of n as x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2 with certain linear restrictions involving the integer variables x,y,z,w. Abstract:Lagrange's four-square theorem asserts that any n∈N={0,1,2,…} can be written as the sum of four squares. This can be further refined in various ways. We show that any n∈N can be written as x2+y2+z2+w2 with x,y,z,w∈Z such that x+y+z (or x+2y, or x+y+2z) is a square (or a cube). We also prove that any n∈N can be written as x2+y2+z2+w2 with x,y,z,w∈N such that P(x,y,z) is a square, whenever P(x,y,z) is among the polynomialsx,2x,x−y,2x−2y,a(x2−y2)(a=1,2,3),x2−3y2,3x2−2y2,x2+ky2(k=2,3,5,6,8,12),(x+4y+4z)2+(9x+3y+3z)2,x2y2+y2z2+z2x2,x4+8y3z+8yz3,x4+16y3z+64yz3. We also pose some conjectures for further research; for example, our 1-3-5-Conjecture states that any n∈N can be written as x2+y2+z2+w2 with x,y,z,w∈N such that x+3y+5z is a square.

Abstract:The 1-3-5 conjecture of Z.-W. Sun states that any $n\in\mathbb N=\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $w,x,y,z\in\mathbb N$ such that $x+3y+5z$ is a square. In this paper, via the theory of ternary quadratic forms and related modular forms, we study the integer version of the 1-3-5 conjecture and related weighted sums of four squares with certain linear restrictions. Here are two typical results in this paper: (i) There is a finite set $A$ of positive integers such that any sufficiently large integer not in the set $\{16^ka:\ a\in A,\ k\in\mathbb N\}$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb Z$ and $x+3y+5z\in\{4^k:\ k\in\mathbb N\}$. (ii) Any positive integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb Z$ and $x+y+2z+2w=1$. Also, any sufficiently large integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb Z$ and $x+2y+3z=1$.
New results similar to Lagrange's four-square theorem

Abstract:In this paper we establish some new results similar to Lagrange's four-square theorem. For example, we prove that any integer $n>1$ can be written $w(5w+1)/2+x(5x+1)/2+y(5y+1)/2+z(5z+1)/2$ with $w,x,y,z\in\mathbb Z$. Here we state two general results: (1) If $a$ and $b$ are odd integers with $a>0$, $b>-a$ and $\gcd(a,b)=1$, then all sufficient large integers can be written as $$\frac{w(aw+b)}2+\frac{x(ax+b)}2+\frac{y(ay+b)}2+\frac{z(az+b)}2$$ with $w,x,y,z$ nonnegative integers. (2) If $a$ and $b$ are integers with $a>0$, $b>-a$, $2\mid a$ and $\gcd(a,b)=1$, then all sufficient large integers can be written as $$w(aw+b)+x(ax+b)+y(ay+b)+z(az+b)$$ with $w,x,y,z$ nonnegative integers.

Abstract:In this paper we confirm a conjecture of Sun which states that each positive integer is a sum of a square, an odd square and a triangular number. Given any positive integer m, we show that p=2m+1 is a prime congruent to 3 modulo 4 if and only if T_m=m(m+1)/2 cannot be expressed as a sum of two odd squares and a triangular number, i.e., p^2=x^2+8(y^2+z^2) for no odd integers x,y,z. We also show that a positive integer cannot be written as a sum of an odd square and two triangular numbers if and only if it is of the form 2T_m (m>0) with 2m+1 having no prime divisor congruent to 3 modulo 4.

Abstract: Lagrange's four-square theorem is a classical theorem in number theory. Recently, Z.-W. Sun found that it can be further refined in various ways. In this paper we obtain two refinements of this celebrated theorem. We show that any nonnegative integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ $(x,y,z,w\in\mathbb Z)$ with $x+y+z+w$ a square (or a cube). Also, every $n=0,1,2,\ldots$ can be represented by $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ $(x,y,z,w\in\mathbb Z)$ with $x+2y+2z$ a square (or a cube).

Abstract:In this paper we mainly study sums of four rational squares with certain restrictions. Let Q≥0 be the set of nonnegative rational numbers. We establish the following four-square theorem for rational numbers: For any a, b, c, d ∈ Q≥0, each r ∈ Q≥0 can be written as x 2 + y+z+w with x, y, z, w ∈ Q≥0 such that ax+by+cz+dw is a rational square (or a rational cube). This paper also contains many conjectures; for example, for any positive integers a and b with gcd(a, b) = 1, we conjecture that each r ∈ Q≥0 can be written as aw + bx +y+ z with w, x, y, z ∈ Q.

Abstract:The subject matter of this work are the two equations: x^4+y^4+z^4-2(x^2)(y^2)-2(y^2)(z^2)-2(z^2)(x^2)= n (1) And x^2+y^4+z^4-2x(y^2)-2x(z^2)-2(y^4)(z^4)= n (2) where n is a natural number. Contest Corner problem CC24, published in the May2012 issue of the journal Crux Mathematicorum(see reference[1]); provided the motivation behind this work. In Th.1, we show that eq.(1) if n=8N, N odd; then eq.(1) has no integer solutions; which generalizes problem CC24(the case n=24). We use Th.2, to find some rational solutions of eq.(1); which answers the second question in CC24. In Th.4, we show that if n= p, 4, or pq; where p and q are distinct primes. Then eq.(1)has no integer solutions. In Th.6, we determine all the integer solutions to (1), when n=p^2, p an odd prime. Theorems 7 through13, deal with equation (2). In Th.11, we determine all the integer solutions of eq.(2). Th.12 states that (2) has no integer solutions in n is congruent to 2 or 3 modulo4. Finally, in Th.13 we determine all the rational solutions of eq.(2).

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:Generalized octagonal numbers are those p8(x)=x(3x−2) with x∈Z. In this paper we show that every positive integer can be written as the sum of four generalized octagonal numbers one of which is odd. This result is similar to Lagrange's theorem on sums of four squares. Moreover, for 35 triples (b,c,d) with 1⩽b⩽c⩽d (including (2,3,4) and (2,4,8)), we prove that any nonnegative integer can be expressed as p8(w)+bp8(x)+cp8(y)+dp8(z) with w,x,y,z∈Z. We also pose several conjectures for further research.
