Abstract:A novel light-driven non-enzymatic glucose sensor based on AuNi nanodendrites has been successfully constructed and applied to glucose detection. The AuNi nanodendrites were fabricated through a one-step underpotential electrodeposition approach, in which the porous anodic aluminum was introduced as the templates. This nanodendritic structure with large surface area provides abundant active sites and good electron transfer for the oxidation of glucose. Considering the plasmonic effect of Au, such a hierarchical hybrid structure displayed remarkably photoelectrocatalytic activity for glucose under the visible light illumination. As a result, the light-driven glucose sensor based on AuNi nanodendrites reveals a high sensitivity of ~183 μAcm−2mM−1 (0.5-18 mM) and a relative low detection limit (0.1 mM), without applying external electrical power supply. The current work is promising to design novel hybrid materials for glucose sensor under visible light illumination without electrical power consumption.

A Novel Glucose Sensor System with Au Nanoparticles Based on Microdialysis and Coenzymes for Continuous Glucose Monitoring

Abstract:A novel glucose sensor based on microdialysis technique has been developed for continuous glucose monitoring. It includes: (1) The microdialysis sampling and interval perfusion system, it can prevent electrode from being fouled and it also provides enough time for glucose molecule traversing the microdialysis membrane to establish a dynamic balance, and the sensor can be recovered well, too. (2) A “sandwich” structure glucose sensor based on an aqueous glucose oxidase (GOD) and catalase solution, it is easy to replace the inactive enzyme solution. Au interdigital array (IDA) microelectrodes and microgrooves were fabricated on the silicon wafer for electrochemistry determinations. (3) Continuous glucose monitoring system. The results of in vitro experiments show this glucose sensor has short response time, high sensitivity and good linearity. To improve the stability of liquid enzyme, aqueous colloidal gold nanoparticles was mixed with coenzymes solution. The result of experiments shows the repeatability of sensor was improved, and the sensitivity of sensor was enhanced. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration that aqueous colloidal gold nanoparticles enhance the activity of aqueous enzymes.

Abstract:In this study, we reported a highly sensitive nonenzymatic glucose sensor based on Cu/Cu2O composite nanoparticles (Cu/Cu2O NPs) decorated on a single carbon fiber (SCF) by direct in-situ electrochemical cyclic voltammetry deposition. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study of the Cu/Cu2O NPs/SCF electrodes displayed a porous structure of Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles with an average size of around 30 nm, which greatly increased the surface area of single carbon fiber and provided a large number of catalysis sites towards glucose oxidation. The electrochemical behavior of Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and amperometry study, in which the as-prepared electrode displayed superior catalytic performance and exhibited an ultra-high sensitivity (28,071 uA mM(-1) cm(-2)) anda wide linear range up to 7.8 mM. The in-situ electrodeposition of Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles and excellent conductivity of carbon fiber improved the electron transfer rate due to direct electron collection and resulted in a short response time (<1 s). Additionally, the electrode also showed good reproducibility, outstanding anti-interference ability and long-time stability, as well as a reliable testing result in bovine serum sample, indicating a potential application in clinical diagnosis and health monitoring.
One-step electrodeposition of AuNi nanodendrite arrays as photoelectrochemical biosensors for glucose and hydrogen peroxide detection

Abstract:A novel nonsemiconductor photoelectrochemical biosensor was first constructed using the unique plasmonic AuNi nanodendrite arrays. The AuNi nanodendrite arrays were rapidly prepared by a one-step electrodeposition method using the porous anodic aluminum templates. Owing to its hierarchical structure with abundant active sites, the synergistic catalytic of Au and Ni can be better exploited. These plasmonic AuNi nanodendrite arrays display exceptional photoelectrocatalytic activities for glucose oxidation and hydrogen peroxide reduction reaction under visible light illumination. Specifically, the detection sensitivity for glucose (3.7277 mA mM-1 cm-2) under illumination is about 3.3 folds improvement than in the dark (1.1287 mA mM-1 cm-2), together with high accuracy and low detection limit of 3 μM. The markedly enhanced performance of AuNi nanodendrite arrays can be attributed to its hierarchical structure with abundant active sites and plasmonic effect of Au with strong absorption band in visible region. Such a newly developed method via the facile and low-cost route is of great significance in designing the plasmon-aided photoelectrochemical biosensors.
Synthesis of Ni/Au Multilayer Nanowire Arrays for Ultrasensitive Non-Enzymatic Sensing of Glucose

Abstract:Ni/Au multilayer nanowire arrays were fabricated by an electrochemical method using anodic aluminum oxide as template. Each nanowire has a length of 2.5 mu m and diameter of 70 nm with alternating Ni and Au layers along its axis. A novel glucose sensor was then developed using a Ni/Au multilayer nanowire array immobilized on an ITO electrode. The resulting sensor exhibited two specific linear ranges at 0.25 mu M2 mM and 25.5 mM, with very high sensitivities (3372 and 1906 mu A mM(-1) cm(-2), respectively). The detection limit was as low as 0.1 mu M with a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. An excellent selectivity and acceptable stability were also achieved. These results indicate that Ni/Au multilayer nanowire arrays are promising new platforms for the construction of non-enzymatic glucose sensors

Abstract:An ultra-sensitive non-enzymatic glucose sensor is demonstrated successfully, based on Ni/Au bilayer nanowire arrays (Ni/Au biNWAs). The Ni/Au biNWAs with 200-nm diameter and 16-μm length were synthesized by using a simple template-assisted electrodeposition method in the pores of anodic alumina membrane (AAO). Each nanowire of the Ni/Au biNWAs is consisted of Ni and Au layers along the direction of length. The electrochemical measurements reveal that the non-enzymatic glucose sensor based on Ni/Au biNWAs exhibits extraordinary electrocatalytic activity for glucose oxidation. Specifically, the device successfully achieves an ultrahigh sensitivity of 5154.84 μA mM−1 cm−2 in the range of 50 μM–10 mM with R2 as high as 0.99877 and that of 1750.16 μA mM−1 cm−2 in the range of 10–65 mM with R2 of 0.989. The developed sensor also demonstrates a low detection limit of 10.69 μM, a rapid response time of 2.5 s and excellent selectivity to avoid the oxidation of other species existing in human blood. The as-prepared sensor based on Ni/Au biNWAs verifies preferable accuracy and precision for glucose detection in human blood serum with relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.67–2.68%, showing great potential for the non-enzymatic detection in physiological glucose levels.

Abstract:Mass detection of glucose, which is required in many applications, remains challenging. The commercial enzyme-based glucose test strips cannot be reused, and current non-enzymatic glucose sensors exhibit a narrow range of detection and slow glucose oxidation kinetics. Herein, controlled etching of Prussian blue analogue (PBA) nanocubes at the vertices is conducted and Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) are subsequently inlaid in the etched cavities by in-situ reduction of HAuCl4. The unique AuNP-PBA nanocomplexes exhibit low electrochemical potential for glucose oxidation, high electrocatalytic activity, and rapid redox electron transfer rate. Covalent immobilization of the Au-inlaid nanomaterials on a fine Au wire leads to a non-enzymatic glucose sensor with a particularly wide linear detection range (10 µM to 16 mM), excellent anti-interference, and fast response. More importantly, the sensor is reusable, and its sensitivity is well maintained even after 150 times of detection. This new-concept material promises to enable high-throughput glucose detection at a low cost, which is essential in diabetic management and other healthcare applications.

Abstract:Gold (Au) and zirconia (ZrO 2 ) nanoparticles as the co–catalyst on modified multi–walled carbon nanotubes (Au/ZrO 2 @MWCNTs) were prepared by simple method. ZrO 2 and Au NPs, Au/ZrO 2 @MWCNTs exhibited excellent electrochemical performances when applied as glucose sensor. The sensor showed a wide linear operating range (10 μM to 13 mM glucose concentration), high sensitivity (162.52 μA cm −2 mM −1 at 10 μM–13 mM), and a low detection limit (0.95 μM) at 0.2 V. After 15 days of consecutive tests, over 90.0 % of the original current was retained, verifying the stability of Au/ZrO 2 @MWCNTs. Furthermore, the non–enzymatic glucose sensor also exhibited strong catalytic activity for the conversion of glucose to gluconic acid with a large active surface area. It is expected to be applicable in the further development of non–enzymatic glucose sensors.

Abstract:Highly ordered Ni nanowire arrays (NiNWAs) were synthesized for the first time using a template-directed electropolymerization strategy with a nanopore polycarbonate (PC) membrane template, and their morphological characterization were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). A NiNWAs based electrode shows very high electrochemical activity for electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose in alkaline medium, which has been utilized as the basis of the fabrication of a nonenzymatic biosensor for electrochemical detection of glucose. The biosensor can be applied to the quantification of glucose with a linear range covering from 5.0x10(-7) to 7.0x10(-3) M, a high sensitivity of 1043 microA mM(-1) cm(-2), and a low detection limit of 1x10(-7) M. The experiment results also showed that the sensor exhibits good reproducibility and long-term stability, as well as high selectivity with no interference from other oxidable species.
Electrochemical nonenzymatic glucose sensors catalyzed by Au nanoclusters on metallic nanotube arrays and polypyrrole nanowires

Abstract:Monitoring blood glucose level is critical, since its abnormality leads to diabetes and causes death, even though glucose is essential for human living. Herein, the sensing study was performed on electrochemical nonenzymatic glucose sensors, which are composed of an Au nanocluster (AuNC) catalyst deposited on a metallic nanotube array (MeNTA) and polypyrrole nanowire (PPyNW). The AuNC was produced by irradiating a femtosecond pulse laser to the Au precursor solution, and it is a simple and facile method. The successful deposition of AuNC on both MeNTA and PPyNW was confirmed by means of the surface morphology and the Au content increase. On the exploration by cyclic voltammetry in alkaline condition, AuNC/MeNTA electrodes showed better performance than AuNC/PPyNW electrodes: The former was a remarkable electrocatalytic detector towards glucose oxidation with better sensitivity, lower detection limit, wider linear range, and longer-term stability without interference from potential interfering agents such as ascorbic acid, urea, NaCl, KCl, etc. Moreover, nonenzymatic AuNC/MeNTA electrodes exhibited high precision and accuracy in real human blood samples and, thus, can be a promising candidate in glucose sensing applications.

Abstract:Highly sensitive and selective nonenzymatic detection of glucose has been achieved using a novel disposable electrochemical sensor based on three-dimensional (3D) porous nickel nanostructures. The enzyme-free sensor was fabricated through in situ growing porous nickel networks on a homemade screen-printed carbon electrode substrate via electrochemically reducing the Ni2+ precursor, along with continuously liberating hydrogen bubbles. The resulting nickel-modified electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and electrochemical techniques. Cyclic voltammetric, alternating-current impedance, and amperometric methods were used to investigate the catalytic properties of the assembled sensor for glucose electro-oxidation in alkaline media. Under optimized conditions, the enzymeless sensor exhibited excellent performance for glucose analysis selectively, offering a much wider linear range (from 0.5 mu M to 4 mM), an extremely low detection limit (0.07 mu M, signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 3), and an ultrahigh sensitivity of 2.9 mA/(cm(2) mM). Importantly, favorable reproducibility and long-term performance stability were obtained thanks to the robust frameworks. Application of the proposed sensor in monitoring blood glucose was also demonstrated.

Abstract:In this contribution, a uniformly distributed CuNi active nanoalloys was obtained on the electrode substrate by one-step facile electrodeposition method, and a simple non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensor was designed based on the CuNi NAs. The CuNi NAs with high specific surface area was investigated through a series of relevant characterizations, and the nanobimetal substrate electrode performed a satisfactory electrocatalytic activity toward glucose in alkaline solution compared with the pure Cu or Ni nanoparticles modified electrode. Chronoamperometry test showed an acceptable linearity in the range of 0.05–35 μM with the detection limit as low as 0.02 μM. In addition, this sensor demonstrated high sensitivity, stability and selectivity, and showed promising performance in the application of glucose measurement in human blood serum samples. Therefore, the constructed non-enzymatic glucose sensor based on CuNi nanoalloys exhibits a good prospect in food industry in the future.Graphical abstract

AuNi bimetallic aerogel with ultra-high stability applied in smart and portable biosensing

Abstract:Glucose detection is of significant importance in providing information to the human health management. However, conventional enzymatic glucose sensors suffer from a limited long-term stability due to the losing activity of the enzymes. In this work, the AuNi bimetallic aerogel with a well-defined nanowire network is synthesized and applied as the sensing nanomaterial in the non-enzymatic glucose detection. The three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical porous structure of the AuNi bimetallic aerogel ensures the high sensitivity of the sensor (40.34 μA mM-1 cm-2). Theoretical investigation unveiled the mechanism of the boosting electrocatalytic activity of the AuNi bimetallic aerogel toward glucose. A better adhesion between the sensing nanomaterial and the screen-printing electrodes (SPEs) is obtained after the introduction of Ni. On the basis of a wide linearity in the range of 0.1-5 mM, an excellent selectivity, an outstanding long-term stability (90 days) as well as the help of the signal processing circuit and an M5stack development board, the as-prepared glucose sensor successfully realizes remote monitoring of the glucose concentration. We speculate that this work is favorable to motivating the technological innovations of the non-enzymatic glucose sensors and intelligent sensing devices.
A novel high-sensitivity non-enzymatic glucose sensor via Cu2O@CuO@NiCo2O4 nanowires as catalyst

Abstract:Glucose sensors are being urgently needed in many fields and it is very necessary to develop efficient electrode materials for electroanalytical glucose sensor. Herein, Cu2O@CuO@NiCo2O4 nanowires (NWs) are successfully synthesized via a hard-template method for an electrochemical sensor, in which we used Cu nanowire as a template. The results show the Cu2O@CuO@NiCo2O4 NWs-based glucose sensor exhibits a high sensitivity up to 1423.912 μAcm−2mM−1, a linear range up to 5. 664 mM, and 600 nM (S/N = 3) lower limit of detection (LOD), accompanied by good selectivity and stability. In principle, such findings demonstrate that Cu2O@CuO@NiCo2O4 NWs could be a promising electrode material in enzyme-free glucose sensors.

Abstract:Highly sensitive electrochemical electrodes for glucose detection were developed by using Au nanoclusters (NCs) to modify nitrogen-doped diamond-like carbon thin films (DLC:N/Au). The DLC:N/Au electrodes were prepared with a filtered cathodic vacuum arc process followed by electrodeposition and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The size of the Au NCs covered by Au oxide ranged between 10 and 70 nm with a density of 108–109 clusters per cm2. Glucose oxidation at the DLC:N/Au electrodes started from about –0.5 V due to the high catalytic activities of the Au NCs in NaOH solutions, and the catalytic ability of the electrodes depended on the amount of Au NCs deposited on the electrode surfaces. A linear detection range of glucose with the DLC:N/Au electrodes was identified from about 0.25 to 30 mM (covering blood glucose levels in diabetic patients) with a detection limit of 60 μM. The experimental results showed that the non-enzymatic glucose sensors based on the DLC:N/Au electrodes had high sensitivity and good reproducibility and stability.

Abstract:We report the fabrication and testing of an ultrafast response nonenzymatic glucose sensor based on the use of interlaced chain structure Au@CuS nanomaterial. The new Au@CuS nanomaterial was synthesized by a facile solvothermal method from L-cysteine、Cu(NO3)2·3H2O and Au Seeds without using additional surfactants or templates. The combination of Au and CuS solves the problems of poor electrical conductivity of CuS and the susceptibility of Au to toxicity, while the interlaced chain structure exposes more active sites to facilitate the diffusion of glucose molecules with a low resistance to increase the inter-electron transfer rate. The non-enzymatic Au@CuS-based glucose sensor showed a wide linear range (up to 9 mM) with excellent sensitivity (5817.37 and 3629.78 A mM−1cm−2), ultrafast response time (<0.1 s), excellent selectivity and outstanding long-term stability. Further, the designed glucose sensor was used to determine glucose in human blood serum sample with satisfactory result.

Abstract:Development of fast and sensitive sensors for glucose determination is important in food industry, clinic diagnostics, biotechnology and many other areas. In these years, considerable attention has been paid to develop non-enzymatic electrodes to solve the disadvantages of the enzyme-modified electrodes, such as instability, high cost, complicated immobilization procedure and critical operating situation et al. Nano nickel oxide (NiO) modified non-enzymatic glucose sensors with enhanced sensitivity were investigated. Potential scanning nano NiO modified carbon paste electrodes up to high potential in alkaline solution greatly increases the amount of redox couple Ni(OH)(2)/NiOOH derived from NiO, and thus improves their electrochemical properties and electrocatalytical performance toward the oxidation of glucose. The non-enzymatic sensors response quickly to glucose and the response time is less than 5s, demonstrating excellent electrocatalytical activity and assay performance. The calibration plot is linear over the wide concentration range of 1-110 μM with a sensitivity of 43.9 nA/μM and a correlation coefficient of 0.998. The detection limit of the electrode was found to be 0.16 μM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. The proposed non-enzymatic sensors can be used for the assay of glucose in real sample.

Abstract:Diabetes mellitus is a common health issue in human beings. It is very important to develop a highly selective and sensitive biosensor for the detection of glucose concentration in the human body. The proposed sensor is based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) technique. An optical tapered fiber structure is used to develop the proposed sensor. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are used to increase the sensitivity of the sensor probe. AuNPs of size ~ 10 nm is synthesized for this purpose. The characterization of AuNPs was performed with the UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope (TEM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Further, glucose oxidase enzyme is used to increase the selectivity of the sensor. The selectivity of sensor is tested with different analytes such as cholesterol, urea, L-cysteine, ascorbic acid, and galactose that are generally found in the serum.
