Abstract:Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membrane, as the core of the OSN technology, plays a very important role in achieving the precise separation of solutes and organic solvents. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) interlayer is useful for fabricating OSN membranes with high performance. However, the effect of COFs interlayer on manipulating the interfacial polymerization process of OSN membranes has not been investigated extensively. In this work, we optimized and selected ultra-low content for COFs monomers, 1, 3, 5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and benzidine (Bd), to construct in-situ an uniform COFs interlayer on the surface of a polyimide porous substrate. Then, we constructed a polyamide separation layer via interfacial polymerization between trimesoyl chloride (TMC) and ultra-low concentration m-phenylenediamine (MPD) on the surface of the interlayered substrate, followed by crosslinking and activation steps. In this way, we fabricated an interlayered thin film composite (i-TFC) membrane with overall covalently crosslinked structure for OSN. We used molecular dynamic (MD) and dissipative particle dynamic (DPD) simulations to investigate the synergistic roles of the COFs interlayer and the ultra-low concentration MPD on regulating the diffusion rate of the MPD molecules towards the interface during the interfacial polymerization (IP) process. The optimal OSN membrane, i-TFC50/25, has an ultra-smooth skin layer which average roughness is only 1.8 nm. The simulations results indicate that the diffusion rate of MPD molecules is 21.8% lower than that of the MPD-water solution system, and the relative concentration of MPD molecules at the IP interface of the MPD / COFs / TMC system is lower than that of the MPD / TMC system, which indicates that the COFs layer effectively decreases the MPD diffusion rate. Meanwhile, the i-TFC50/25 OSN membrane achieves a 57% increase of ethanol permeance compared to that of the control TFC membrane, while maintaining a rhodamine B (RDB) rejection of higher than 98%. Further, it shows excellent organic solvent resistance. It remains a high DMF permeance of 150 L m(-2) h(-1) MPa-1 and a Rose bengal (RB) rejection of 98.9% after 72 h filtration with 100 mg L-1 RB / DMF as feed solution at varied temperatures (25, 50 and 75 degrees C, each for 24 h). Moreover, it shows excellent performance in drug separation and concentration. Thus, the prepared i-TFC50/25 membrane is much suitable for industrial OSN application.
