Abstract:This work reports a catalyst-free epoxy vitrimer which being prepared through one-pot thermally-induced reactions similar to the conditions applied to conventional epoxy resins. With a Meldrum's acid functionalized aniline compound (MAMA) as a curing agent for epoxy compounds, in situ formation of dynamic ester bonds and permanent tertiary amine linkages in crosslinked networks is achieved through ketene/-OH and amine/epoxy addition reactions, respectively. The tertiary amine groups bring significant catalytic effect to the transesterification of the dynamic ester bonds, making the vitrimer could be recycled and reprocessed without additional catalysts. Moreover, the thermal and mechanical properties of the vitrimer are comparable to the properties of conventional aromatic amine-cured bisphenol-A epoxy resin. Both the preparation conditions and properties of the obtained vitrimer are compatible to the conventional epoxy resins.

Abstract:Traditional crosslinked diene rubber has excellent thermal-mechanical properties and solvent resistance, yet it is incapable of being recycled via universal molding or injecting. Vitrimers, a new class of covalently crosslinked polymer networks, can be topologically rearranged with the associative exchange mechanism, endowing them with thermoplasticity. Introducing the concept of vitrimers into crosslinked networks for the recycling of rubbers is currently an attractive research topic. However, designing tailored rubber vitrimers still remains a challenge. Herein, polybutadiene (PB) vitrimers with different structures were prepared via partial epoxidation of double bonds and ring-opening esterification reactions. Their mechanical and relaxation properties were investigated. It was found that the increasing crosslinking density can increase tensile strength and activation energy for altering the network topology. The influence of side-group effects on their relaxation properties shows that an increase in the number of epoxy groups on the polybutadiene chain can increase the chance of an effective exchange of disulfide units. This work provides a simple network design which can tune vitrimer properties via altering the crosslinking density and side-group effects.

Abstract:The covalent cross-linked structure imparts strong elasticity and environmental resistance to elastomers, while the irreversibility of covalent bonds restricts the recycling of rubbers. Integrating vitrimer chemistry into chemical cross-linked networks appears to be a charming method to combine the exciting properties of thermoplastics and thermosets. However, it is still a challenge to design a rubber vitrimer with robust mechanical properties. Here, inspired by supramolecular interactions associated with natural materials, we demonstrated a dual reversible cross-linked SBR vitrimer by introducing imine bonds and hydrogen bonding. The integration of hydrogen bonding endows the elastomer vitrimer with significantly improved strength and toughness without influencing the recycling ability. This work provides a simple and effective strategy in the design of elastomer vitrimers with robust mechanical properties and good recyclability.
One-Pot Preparation of Double-Network Epoxy Vitrimers with High Performance, Recyclability, and Two-Stage Stress Relaxation

Abstract:Although considerable progress has been made in developing different types of vitrimers, ongoing challenges remain in tuning their mechanical and rheological properties, self-healing, and adhesion. Here, we demonstrate a one-pot method to produce a novel double-network epoxy vitrimer using an aliphatic amine cross-linker with a siloxane covalent bond and an aromatic amine cross-linker with a disulfide covalent bond. When a controlled two-stage curing process is employed, the markedly different reactivities of aliphatic amine and aromatic amine with epoxy allow for sequential cross-linked network formation, leading to the development of a double network that incorporates two types of dynamic covalent bonds. As a result, the produced vitrimers exhibit controllable mechanical, thermal, and rheological properties, as well as recyclability. This is evidenced by a tensile strength as high as 72 MPa, while maintaining ∼10% elongation at break, a wide glass-transition temperature range from 91 to 171 °C, and an adjustable two-stage stress relaxation. These characteristics suggest opportunities to develop high-performance cross-linked polymers with specific responses to time and temperatures.

Abstract:Novel butyl-glycidylether-modified poly(propyleneimine) dendrimers (PPIs) are prepared by reacting butyl glycidylether with PPI, which turn out to be able to cure bisphenol-A epoxy resin to an acceptable reaction extent. The nonisothermal reactions, dynamic mechanical properties and thermal stabilities of their cured epoxy resin are comparatively investigated with DSC, DMA and TGA, respectively. The model-fitting kinetic study demonstrates that Šesták–Berggren model can generally well simulate the reaction rates, and the isoconversional kinetic analysis with the Vyazovkin method indicates the curing agents, particularly their setric hindrance and the number of the –OH groups attached, greatly affect reaction kinetic schemes. Increasing the number of the BGE substituents attached to PPIs decreases the reactivity, glass- and beta-relaxation temperatures and thermal stability of the resulting epoxy systems, yet the intensity and width of the glass relaxation increase. This work offers a unique way of preparing modified-aliphatic-polyamine curing agents, and provides an opportunity to better learn about the amine-adduct curing agents which are widely used in room-temperature-cure epoxy coatings and adhesives from these good model compounds.

If the catalyst loading is not enough, the vitrimer properties will be limited. In this work, a preparation method of catalyst‐free epoxy vitrimer is demonstrated by adding glycerol to an epoxy–anhydride curing system. The hydroxyls of glycerol first react with the anhydride to induce the ring‐opening of anhydride and form a carboxylic acid, and the latter attacks the epoxy and form a β‐hydroxyester linkage, so the curing can be performed in the absence of catalyst. A significant amount of hydroxy groups are preserved in the crosslinked network, and they serve as both reacting moiety and catalyst for the DTER, which imparts fast relaxation and satisfactory repairability to the materials. By taking advantage of this mechanism, a catalyst‐free and self‐healing coating is demonstrated. These findings provide a solution to avoid using catalyst in vitrimer preparation and advance the application of vitrimer in coating. However, the addition of glycerol produces a decrease of the <i>T</i> <sub>g</sub> of the final materials, which needs to be further addressed in the future study.</p>

Abstract:Vitrimers, a polymer class that combines the benefits of thermosetting plastics and thermoplastics, have extensive potential applications in our daily lives and industry. Effectively controlling the dynamic properties of vitrimer materials has received considerable attention. This research prepared a series of dynamic epoxy crosslinking network with varying crosslinking densities by introducing reactive monofunctional small-molecule epoxy monomers through a transesterification reaction. Stress relaxation behavior confirmed the impact of small molecular epoxy on the rearrangement of the transesterification topological network. The findings indicated that decreasing the crosslinking density of the resin resulted in shorter stress relaxation time. Adding small molecular epoxy from 0% to 5% increased the tensile strength of the material from 13.2 MPa to 18.1 MPa. The findings demonstrate that it is efficient to adjust the dynamic properties of glass-like polymers by changing the cross-linking density. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of glass-like polymers can be enhanced by appropriately reducing the cross-linking density, which offers a new method for preparing vitrimer materials with desirable properties.

Abstract:Epoxy (EP) vitrimers are currently regarded as ideal substitutes for traditional thermosetting resins, as this class of materials combines the advantages of thermoplastic and thermoset polymers. However, maintaining the high performance of EP vitrimers with excellent healing properties remains a challenge. In this work, a novel hardener combining disulfide and imine bonds through the reaction of Schiff base (4-AFD-VAN) was designed and then used to prepare the EP vitrimer with dual-dynamic covalent bonds. Compared to the single-disulfide-containing vitrimer (EVP-4-AFD), the prepared EP vitrimer (EPV-4-AFD-VAN) exhibited a lower activation energy and a faster stress relaxation. Moreover, EPV-4-AFD-VAN showed a tensile strength of up to 71.5 MPa and maintained a recovery ratio of approximately 90.0% during the three cycles. Similar to traditional thermoset EP, EPV-4-AFD-VAN retained its good solvent resistance, high breakdown strength, and good dielectric properties, which can be chemically degraded in suitable solvents, demonstrating its environmental sustainability.

Abstract:The impact of stoichiometry ratio on thermomechanical and reprocessing performance of epoxy vitrimers. Epoxy vitrimers immerged as an appealing alternative to traditional plastics. However, high loading of catalyst and harsh processing conditions are prerequisites to fully exploit the vitrimer properties. In this work, stoichiometric ratio, an often neglected factor, was utilized to further accelerate the rate of dynamic transesterification. Epoxy vitrimers with four epoxy/acid stoichiometries (60:30, 40:30, 30:30, and 24:30) were prepared to comparatively analyze their network structures, thermomechanical properties, and reprocessing properties. It was found that the off‐stoichiometry epoxy vitrimers have almost the similar excellent thermal stability as epoxy thermosets. Vitrimers with excess epoxy showed increased tensile strength (from 26.3 to 42.7 MPa) and decreased elongation at the break (from 5.5% to 1.7%). Meanwhile, excess epoxy induced abundant of hydroxy groups in the vitrimers, imparting satisfactory repairability, reformability, and recyclability. Specifically, epoxy/acid (60:30) repaired 94% in 10 min at 180°C, and maintained over 93% mechanical properties after reforming and recycling. However, simply increasing the epoxy content will compromise the structural integrity of the network, simultaneously resulting in reduced toughness of epoxy vitrimers. These findings demonstrated that epoxy/acid stoichiometry can be a powerful tool to develop epoxy vitrimers with both excellent thermomechanical and reprocessing properties.

Abstract:Vitrimers, a new generation of polymeric materials, have been widely investigated to resolve the intersection of thermoplastics and thermosets, relying on the exchange reactions in networks. However, it is still a challenge to develop multi-functional vitrimer materials. Herein, multi-functional epoxy vitrimers that exhibited controllable dynamic properties, multiple-stimuli response, crack-healing and fracture-welding were prepared by introducing Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the networks of dual dynamic epoxy vitrimers. It was revealed that the typical dynamic parameters of vitrimer including the characteristic relaxation time (τ), activation energy (Ea), Arrhenius prefactor (τ0) and topology freezing transition temperature (Tv) could be readily adjusted in the multi-functional epoxy vitrimers. Moreover, the multi-functional epoxy vitrimers were simultaneously responsive to temperature, near infrared and magnetic field, while they could be driven by magnets, heated by near infrared and healed or welded by heating. Upon heating or near infrared, the cracks in samples could be successfully healed. Besides, by the cooperation of heating and magnet or near infrared and magnet, the multi-functional epoxy vitrimers were able to achieve non-touch welding of factures. These multi-functional epoxy vitrimers might have potential application in improving the reliability and extending the lifetime of polymeric materials. Meanwhile, the facile way to functionalize the epoxy vitrimers is estimated to be suitable for other vitrimer materials.

Abstract:Progress in the ever‐growing vitrimer chemistry opens up great opportunities for a sustainable society by producing reprocessable thermosets. However, most vitrimers suffer from the conflict between mechanical performance and dynamic reactivity, hindering the development of industrial applications. Herein, a facile but universal material design strategy is proposed to yield tough epoxy vitrimers while preserving excellent reprocessability. Copolymerization and bond exchange reactions can build covalent bridges between heterogeneous polymer networks, thus leading to a hybrid dynamic covalent polymer network containing hard and soft segments. Tailorable mechanical and thermal properties are obtained by controlling the ratio of hard to soft components. The resulting epoxy vitrimer can balance strength and stretchability while exhibiting brittle to ductile transformation in tensile tests. Enhanced fracture toughness is achieved compared to both pristine hard and soft vitrimers. The resulting vitrimers exhibit excellent processability, showing potential applications in composite fabrication, welding and reshaping, and multiple shape memory functions. This work presents a feasible approach to satisfying the demands of mechanical performance and dynamic reactivity in the design of epoxy vitrimers. Abstract:Bio-based vitrimers present a promising solution to the issues associated with non-renewable and non-recyclable attributes of traditional thermosetting resins, showcasing extensive potential for diverse applications. However, their broader adoption has been hindered by the requirement for catalyst inclusion during the synthesis process. In this study, a cardanol-based curing agent with poly-hydroxy and tertiary amine structures was prepared by a clean synthetic method under the theory of click chemistry. The reaction of a cardanol-based curing agent with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A formed catalyst-free, self-healing, and recyclable bio-based vitrimers. The poly-hydroxy and tertiary amine structures in the vitrimers promoted the curing of epoxy-carboxylic acid in the cross-linked network and served as internal catalysts of dynamic transesterification. In the absence of catalysts, the vitrimers network can achieve topological network rearrangement through dynamic transesterification, exhibiting excellent reprocessing performance. Moreover, the vitrimers exhibited faster stress relaxation (1500 s at 180 °C), lower activation energy (92.29 kJ·mol−1) and the tensile strength of the recycled material reached almost 100% of the original sample. This work offers a new method for preparing cardanol-based epoxy vitrimers that be used to make coatings, hydrogels, biomaterials, adhesives, and commodity plastics in the future.

Mechanically Strong, Thermally Healable, and Recyclable Epoxy Vitrimers Enabled by ZnAl-Layer Double Hydroxides

Abstract:To meet the demand of sustainable development, epoxy vitrimers based on the dynamic transesterification reaction (DTER) have received considerable attention recently due to their reprocessability and repairability. However, they suffer from low mechanical strength and rely heavily on external catalysts to ensure their curing and repair. Herein, we report a facile design of a novel ZnAl-LDH-catalyzed epoxy vitrimer nanocomposite via introducing ZnAl-layered double metal hydroxide (ZnAl-LDH) nanosheets. Our results show that ZnAl-LDH can be well dispersed in the epoxy vitrimer. Notably, ZnAl-LDH has multifunctionality, which can simultaneously catalyze the curing reaction and enhance the mechanical strength and repairable efficiency of the resultant vitrimer. For instance, the peak curing temperature of epoxy vitrimer with 2 wt % ZnAl-LDH is 8 °C lower than that of an epoxy vitrimer under the same loading between Zn2+ of Zn(OAc)2, demonstrating a strong catalytic action. The tensile strength and Young’s modulus of ZnAl-LDH/epoxy resin (ER) increase from 18 and 156 MPa to 42 and 307 MPa, respectively, due to the reinforcing effect of ZnAl-LDH and the increased cross-linking density. The repairable efficiency of ZnAl-LDH/ER can reach 95% after repair at 200 °C for 1 h, which is mainly due to the abundant catalytic sites and large contact areas of the ZnAl-LDH lamella. Hence, this work offers an innovative and scalable strategy for creating epoxy vitrimers combining exceptional mechanical strength and high repairable efficiency, which holds great promise for many practical applications in the industry.

Abstract:From cars to airplanes, from household appliances to indoor ornaments, from biomedical devices to factory equipment, epoxy resins have been deeply rooted in modern society. But at the same time, they also bring about a lot of wastes after use due to their insoluble and infusible nature. Vitrimer opens up great opportunities towards to a sustainable society by producing reprocessable epoxies and even thermosets. Epoxy vitrimers are not only the first reported vitrimers, but also the most studied vitrimers. Epoxy vitrimers are reversible covalently crosslinked networks with dynamic covalent bonds, combining excellent mechanic properties of thermosets with reprocessability of thermoplastics. Moreover, the exchangeable network endows vitrimers with excellent reprocessing, self-healing, welding, reshaping and recycling properties. So vitrimers are hopeful to replace traditional thermosets for a wide range of applications in aerospace materials, electronic devices, consumer products of daily life and so on. This review summarizes recent advances in epoxy vitrimer research. The classification and fabrication of epoxy vitrimers and their composites are thoroughly discussed. New properties of epoxy vitrimers brought by the dynamic covalent bonds are also reviewed in-depth. Their potential applications are subsequently explored and summarized.

Abstract:Conventional epoxy anhydride curing systems typically require large amounts of catalyst to ensure a high ester exchange rate, and the resulting cured epoxy vitrimer has renewable and self-repairing properties, but is limited by the amount of catalyst loading. In this study, a diol (VT) containing imine bonds was synthesized from vanillin (VAN) and tyramine (TA) to catalyze the epoxy-anhydride curing process, and glycerol triglycidyl ether (GTE) was co-cured with VT and methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA), which constructed a bio-based regenerative and repairable epoxy vitrimer with dual dynamic covalent bonds (GMV), the free hydroxyl groups in the crosslinked network could rapidly promote the ester exchange rate. The thermal, mechanical, solvent resistance, self-repairing, renewable and shape memory properties of GMV were systematically investigated by adjusting the ratio of anhydride and hydroxyl groups. It exhibits a better thermal stability property T d 5% (281.27°C) and a shorter relaxation time τ (12.15 s) at 140 °C. In addition, the scratches of GMV could be almost completely healed at 120 °C for 60 min, and this test demonstrated that GMV has better self-healing and renewable tests. The present work promotes the epoxy vitrimer species and expands the esterification scheme performed without catalyst.

High-Performance Epoxy Vitrimers with the Joint Action of Dual Dynamic Covalent Bonds

Abstract:Epoxy vitrimers have attracted increasing research attention owing to their stable physical properties, reprocessability, recyclability, and degradability. Among them, rapid self-healing can be achieved in dual dynamic covalent epoxy vitrimers. However, research on the performance and high-strength surface welding of dual dynamic covalent epoxy vitrimers with flexibility is still insufficient. Herein, we report a dual dynamic covalent epoxy vitrimer cocross-linked by dimer acid (DAA) and 3,3 '-dithiodipropionic acid (DTDA), named E51-DAAx-DTDAy. The results suggest that the stress relaxation and self-healing speed of vitrimers is improved and the mechanical properties can be restored by 81.2% after 24 h of healing. Additionally, significant recyclability is found in E51-DAAx-DTDAy, with a maximum recovery rate of 119.4% in tensile strength and 124.8% in elongation at break after three times of recycling. Furthermore, T-v of E51-DAAx-DTDAy was above 140 degrees C; meanwhile, E51-DAAx-DTDAy had better insulation properties, making them more suitable for use as thermosetting materials at moderate temperatures in electronic equipment. E51-DAAx-DTDAy can be recycled by chemical reagents, and green cycling can be achieved. These are attributed to the contributions of disulfide bonds and hydroxyl ester bonds in the network topology.

Abstract:In addition to recycling and reprocessing features, designs of vitrimers possessing critical properties required for conventional cross-linked polymers are of interest. In this work, a newly designed Meldrum's acid (MA)-functionalized and phosphorus-containing bisphenol compound (P-MADV) compound is synthesized. Employing P-MADV as a curing agent, simultaneous formation of permanent and dynamic covalent linkages through one-pot reaction has been achieved in formation of flame retardant epoxy resin vitrimers. The newly synthesized P-MADV compound is an effective cross-linking agent for commercially-available epoxy resins for synthesis of flame-retardant epoxy vitrimers through the conventional cross-linking conditions and processes. The cross-linked epoxy vitrimer passes the flame test under UL 94V-0 specification contributed from the phosphorus-containing groups. The flame retardant vitrimer also exhibits a storage modulus of 1.2 GPa at 50 o C and a T g (tanδ peak) of 185 o C, which are comparable to the values found with conventional phenolic novolac-cross-linked epoxy resin (storage modulus: 1.6 GPa; T g : 155 o C). Without addition of catalysts for dynamic bond exchanging reaction, the cross-linked epoxy vitrimer shows stress relaxation time of 397 sec at 230 o C and an activation energy of stress relaxation of 97.8 kJ mol -1 . The dynamic features warrant the epoxy vitrimer being recyclable under thermally pressing at 230 o C and 16 MPa for 1 h. The recycled samples exhibit thermal and mechanical properties being comparable to the pristine resin. This work has demonstrated an attractive approach for preparation of flame retardant epoxy resin vitrimers in viewpoints of both manufacturing processes and resins properties.

Abstract:Vitrimers offer possibilities for sustainable materials due to their reprocessability and recyclability. However, enhancing both their mechanical strength and network dynamics simultaneously remains a challenge. Previous attempts to address this issue have not achieved the desired mechanical strength comparable to traditional cured resins and have also fallen short in dynamic performance during compression molding and extrusion processing. In our study, we have successfully created an epoxy vitrimer, EOCY, by a rational design of the topology of a dual dynamic-covalent-bond (D-DCBs) network based on disulfide and imine bonds. The network of this design incorporates a high density of DCBs through the combined utilization of a rigid monomer containing imine bonds and a flexible crosslinker that carries disulfide bonds. The rigid epoxy monomers in EOCY result in superior tensile strength (85.35 MPa), high T g (112.01 °C), high Young's modulus (2.01 GPa) and improved solvent resistance. Moreover, the flexibility of the curing agent and plentiful D-DCBs lead to reduced activation energy (E a = 42.23 kJ/mol) and short relaxation time (τ = 4.84 s at 140 °C), enabling EOCY to withstand multiple cycles of compression molding and continuous extrusion processing. Our vitrimer also demonstrates recyclability through various chemical methods, leveraging the unique properties of disulfide and imine bonds. In , this study presents a rational approach to network structure design for vitrimers with exceptional mechanical and dynamic properties.

Abstract:Dual covalent adaptive network facilitates reprocessability in epoxy vitrimers. A fast‐curing epoxy with improved mechanical properties, self‐healing and re‐processability was designed using a tailored Schiff based motif that offered dual covalent adaptable network (CAN) in epoxy. The designer motif is a dynamic hardener with both acetal linkage and a Schiff base motif in the same molecule which allowed us to gain a mechanistic insight into the evolving transient network in epoxy vitrimers. The dynamic hardener besides offering a cross‐linked network in epoxy can facilitate rapid exchange reactions, resulting in a material with high tensile strength (74 MPa), high glass transition temperature (121°C), and that can be re‐purposed through solvent induced degradation. The proposed dynamic curing agent is suitable to be employed as a coating material on substrates to ensure excellent self‐healing and re‐processability ensuring chemical recyclability. Few carbon fiber‐based laminates were prepared using the epoxy vitrimer and the recovery of CF post laminate preparation clearly demonstrates the closed‐loop circularity in epoxy vitrimers. Highlights A unique dynamic curing agent is designed consisting of an aldehyde (salicylaldehyde) and an amine and acetal containing species (amino acetaldehyde dimethyl acetal). It facilitates imine and acetal exchange that can bond at temperatures 105°C as evidenced by the vitrimer transition temperature. Epoxies show high tensile strength (74 MPa), exceptional Tg (121°C), fast stress relaxation and an activation energy of 96.2 KJ/mol. The imine‐acetal exchange system rendered the epoxies re‐processable, malleable and re‐usable.

Abstract:Thermoset epoxy resin materials can be endowed with unique dynamic properties by introducing dynamic covalent bonds (DCB) into the cross‐link network of the epoxy resin. However, it remains a challenge to obtain epoxy materials with high mechanical, thermodynamic, and dynamic properties. In this work, a series of epoxy vitrimers with double DCBs were prepared by using a curing agent with imine bonds (PAMD) and an epoxy resin with disulfide bonds (BGPDS). PAMD and BGPDS are cross‐linked and form a uniform aromatic framework that ensures the mechanical and thermal properties of the material. High‐density DCBs ensure the dynamic performance of epoxy vitrimer. In addition, tetra‐needle‐like ZnO whiskers (T‐ZnOw) were added to the epoxy vitrimer for further reinforcement. The results demonstrated that epoxy vitrimer composites with T‐ZnOw content of 10 wt.% exhibit high tensile strength, high Tg, high healing efficiency, shape reconfiguration, reprocessing and rapid degradation. The degradation products can recycle and produce new epoxy vitrimer, leading to a closed‐loop recycling which reduced the environmental pollution and resource waste.
