Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation of furfural(FF)into 2-methylfuran(MF)is a significant biomass utilization route.However,designing efficient and stable non-noble metal catalyst is still a huge challenge.Herein,we reported the N,O co-doped carbon anchored with Co nanoparticles(Co-SFB)synthesized by employing the organic ligands with the target heteroatoms.Raman,electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR),electro-chemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS),and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)characterizations showed that the co-doping of N and O heteroatoms in the carbon support endows Co-SFB with enriched lone pair electrons,fast electron transfer ability,and strong metal-support interaction.These electronic properties resulted in strong FF adsorption as well as lower apparent reaction activation energy.At last,the obtained N,O co-doped Co/C catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity(nearly 100 mol％FF conver-sion and 94.6 mol％MF yield)and stability for in-situ dehydrogenation of FF into MF.This N,O co-doping strategy for the synthesis of highly efficient catalytic materials with controllable electronic state will pro-vide an excellent opportunity to better understand the structure-function relationship.

Abstract:Biomass is the most abundant renewable resource on earth and developing high-performance nonprecious selective hydrogenation (SH) catalysts will enable the use of biomass to replace rapidly diminishing fossil resources. This work utilizes ZIF-67-derived nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes to confine Co nanoparticles (NPs) with Co-Nx active sites as a high-performance SH catalyst. The confined Co NPs with Co-Nx exhibit excellent catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability toward a wide range of biomass-derived compounds. Such active sites can selectively hydrogenate aldehyde, ketone, carboxyl, and nitro groups of biomass-derived compounds into value-added fine chemicals with 100% selectivity. The reported approach could be adopted to create other forms of catalytically active sites from other nonprecious metals.

Abstract:Valorization of biomass and plastics is an urgent assignment to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. Hydrodeoxygenation using bimetallic catalysts with distinct active sites is one of the most effective approaches to producing fuels and chemicals via C-O/C-C bonds hydrogenolysis and hydrogenation. Rational design of bimetallic catalysts has been progressed in recent studies owing to the understanding of synergy and strong mutual interaction between metal nanoparticles and metal oxide species. Thus, activity of bimetallic catalysts has been further improved, and the chemoselectivity for suppression of C-C bond dissociation and the regioselectivity among different C-O bonds, which have less been achieved before, are realized in the hydrodeoxygenation reactions. The catalytic performances, catalyst structures, and reaction mechanisms are directly compared and discussed in details based on the C-O bond cleavage using glycerol and 1,2-propanediol hydrogenolysis as model reactions over Ir-, Pt-, and Ru-based bimetallic catalysts. Finally, application of these bimetallic catalysts to conversion of lignocellulose-derived feedstocks, carbonyl compounds, and typical plastic of polycarbonates is introduced. Synchronous Inverse Valence Modulation of Ni3+/Co2+ over Metal/metal-Oxide Heterojunction Catalyst to Promote Hydrodeoxygenation Performance of Lignin Derivatives

Abstract:The proper design of catalyst structure is crucial for highly selective hydrodeoxygenation. Here, a strategy of in-situ topological transformation was proposed to prepare a MOF/LDH composite self-sacrificial template mediated by NiCo-MOF template, and a metal-monomer/metal-oxide composite heterojunction catalyst was synthesized. The result indicated that the formation of Ni3+ species on the surface of t-NiCo-60 catalyst was generated through this unique structural transformation, which promoted the charge movement between Ni-Co and caused more Co2+ to be formed, and this simultaneous reverse valence modulation between Ni3+/Co2+ facilitated the generation of oxygen vacancies, which improved the hydrogen heterocleavage activation on the catalyst and enabled the t-NiCo-60 catalyst to remove oxygen-containing groups from lignin derivatives with high selectivity. Achieved complete conversion of lignin derivatives in a short duration of time and highly selective generation of the target products (92.5 % selectivity for cyclohexanol and 99.9 % selectivity for 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol). This research provides a new approach for the efficient upgrading of lignin derivatives.
In Situ Construction of a Co/ZnO@C Heterojunction Catalyst for Efficient Hydrogenation of Biomass Derivative under Mild Conditions

Abstract:The efficient hydrogenation of biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA) to value-added γ-valerolactone (GVL) based on nonprecious metal catalysts under mild conditions is crucial challenge because of the intrinsic inactivity and instability of these catalysts. Herein, a series of highly active and stable carbon-encapsulated Co/ (where X = 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, the molar ratios of Zn/(Co+Zn)) heterojunction catalysts were obtained by in situ pyrolysis of bimetal CoZn MOF-74. The optimal Co/ catalyst could achieve 100% conversion of LA and 98.35% selectivity to GVL under mild conditions (100 °C, 5 bar, 3 h), which outperformed most of the state-of-the-art catalysts reported so far. Detailed characterizations, experimental investigations, and theoretical calculations revealed that the interfacial interaction between Co and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) could promote the dispersibility and air stability of the active Co0 for the activation of H2. Moreover, the strong Co–ZnO interaction also enhanced the Lewis acidity of the Co/ZnO interface, contributing to the adsorption of LA and the esterification of intermediates. The synergy between the hydrogenation sites and the Lewis acid sites at the Co/ZnO interface enabled the conversion of LA to GVL with high efficiency. Abstract:Abstract The development of precious-metal-free catalysts to promote the sustainable production of fuels and chemicals from biomass remains an important and challenging target. Here, we report the efficient hydrogenolysis of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-dimethylfuran over a unique core-shell structured catalyst, Co@CoO that affords the highest productivity among all catalysts, including noble-metal-based catalysts, reported to date. Surprisingly, we find that the catalytically active sites reside on the shell of CoO with oxygen vacancies rather than the metallic Co. The combination of various spectroscopic experiments and computational modelling reveals that the CoO shell incorporating oxygen vacancies not only drives the heterolytic cleavage, but also the homolytic cleavage of H 2 to yield more active H δ− species, resulting in the exceptional catalytic activity. Co@CoO also exhibits excellent activity toward the direct hydrodeoxygenation of lignin model compounds. This study unlocks, for the first time, the potential of simple metal-oxide-based catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation of renewable biomass to chemical feedstocks.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived bio-oils to value-added biofuels is of great importance to efficient utilization of renewable biomass. Precisely tailoring the surface microenvironment of supported metal nanocatalysts plays a significant role in regulating the interaction between reactants and catalytic active sites and facilitates the acquiring of high-performance HDO catalysts for lignin upgrading. Herein, we report a step-economic synthesis of N-doped hollow carbon sphere encapsulated with Co nanoreactors (, X: 700-1000) via the template-directed in-situ crystallization of Co-based ZIF-67 (zeolite imidazolate framework) and pyrolysis process. The optimized nanocatalyst presented a 100% conversion and 96% selectivity towards valuable 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) biofuel through HDO of bio-oils-based vanillin. Such excellent catalytic performance was attributed to the specific structure properties and surface microenvironment of nanocatalysts. It was demonstrated that the electronic interaction between embedded Co nanoparticles and surface nitrogen species of NHCS nanoreactors constructed desired microenvironment and generated abundant surface Co active species, which could effectively enhance activation capabilities of reactants and intermediate, and achieve highly selective HDO of vanillin to MMP via promoted adsorptions of CO/CO bonds as confirmed by intrinsic kinetic evaluations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, a two-step of hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis tandem reaction pathway of vanillin HDO to MMP and the corresponding catalytic reaction mechanism were proposed. Besides, the hierarchical porous structure of NHCS facilitated the dispersion and stabilization of encapsulated Co nanoparticles and endowed nanocatalyst with good stability in recycling tests. This work provided new insights into rational design of efficient and stable metal nanocatalysts for biomass conversion.

Abstract:Hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation are significant and distinct approaches for the conversion of biomass and biomass-derived oxygenated chemicals into high value-added chemicals and fuels. However, it remains a great challenge to synthesize catalysts that simultaneously possess excellent hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation performance. Herein, we report a catalyst made of isolated single-atom Ru supported on mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (Ru-1/mpg-C3N4), fabricated by a wet impregnation method. The as prepared Ru-1/mpg-C3N4 catalyst shows excellent hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation performance. First principles calculations reveal that the Ru atom is mobilized, and the active site is induced by adsorption of the reactants. A systematic reaction mechanism is proposed, suggesting that vanillyl alcohol is the deoxygenation prohibited product, while 2-methoxy-p-cresol is the deoxygenation allowed product. Thus, the excellent selectivity for the hydrogenation or hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin at different temperatures results from switching between the two types of products.

Abstract:Controlling the selectivity of CO2 hydrogenation by catalysis is a fundamental challenge. This study examines the interrelation between active sites and reaction pathways in Ni-catalyzed CO2 hydrogenation. The alloying of Ni with Zn to charged (Niσ––Znσ+) active sites modifies the electronic structure and d-band center, weakens the interaction with CO/H2, and preferentially catalyzes the reverse water gas shift to CO with the thermodynamically favored methanation pathway switched off. The charged dual sites can stabilize the activated CO2 species in a η2(C, O) bridge configuration, directly dissociate the CO bond to *CO, and promote CO desorption. The mechanistic investigation has elucidated the reaction pathways in the Ni-catalyzed CO2 hydrogenation and identified the crucial intermediates that impacted the product selectivity, which can provide a theoretical guide for the Ni-based catalyst design.

Abstract:Porous CoNC catalysts with ultrahigh surface area are highly required for catalytic reactions. Here, a scale-up method to synthesize gram-quantities of isolated Co single-site catalysts anchored on N-doped porous carbon nanobelt (Co-ISA/CNB) by pyrolysis of biomass-derived chitosan is reported. The usage of ZnCl2 and CoCl2 salts as effective activation-graphitization agents can introduce a porous belt-like nanostructure with ultrahigh specific surface area (2513 m(2) g(-1)) and high graphitization degree. Spherical aberration correction electron microscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure analysis reveal that Co species are present as isolated single sites and stabilized by nitrogen in CoN4 structure. All these characters make Co-ISA/CNB an efficient catalyst for selective oxidation of aromatic alkanes at room temperature. For oxidation of ethylbenzene, the Co-ISA/CNB catalysts yield a conversion up to 98% with 99% selectivity, while Co nanoparticles are inert. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the generated Co=O centers on isolated Co single sites are responsible for the excellent catalytic efficiency.

Abstract:carbon spheres as nanoreactors (MHCSs) are receiving extensive attention in biomass hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) due to well-defined active site, confined void space, modifiable surface, and tunable mass transfer rate. All their exciting properties heavily depend on the controllable and ingenious design of the MHCSs with desired physical and chemical microenvironment. In this paper, different synthesis strategies, based on template approaches and encapsulation technologies, for the construction of oriented MHCSs have been comprehensively reviewed. Additionally, a distinctive viewpoint on structure-activity correlation of MHCSs is presented in terms of achieving perfect adjustment of geometric categories such as cavity size, pore structure, shell thickness, multi-shell structure. Furthermore, the functionalization chemical microenvironment of MHCSs is discussed, including heteroatomic doping engineering, surface functionalization and defect engineering. The potential prospects of novel multifunctional MHCSs for broader biomass valorization are proposed, providing guidance for the rational design of advanced catalysts for a highly efficient biomass refining system.

Abstract:The creation of non-noble metal magnetically-separable heterogeneous catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation of biomass to value-added products has received substantial attention. Herein, we report a facile synthesis of magnetically-separable cobalt catalyst embedded in hierarchically porous N-doped carbon nanospheres (Co@NC) by in situ non-noble metal nitrate-promoted pyrolysis reduction strategy using nitrogen/oxygen co-doped resin polymer spheres as precursors. The facile H2O2 post-treatment process increased surface oxygen-containing groups and improved hydrophilicity to disperse catalysts in aqueous solutions. Moreover, owing to the non-noble metal nanoparticles coated with a graphitic nitrogen-doped carbon layer, the as-prepared Co@NCH2O2 catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity and stability of vanillin hydrodeoxygenation in aqueous solutions. This strategy can be extended to other non-noble metal nitrates like M@NCH2O2 (M = Co, Ni) within good recyclability, magnetically-separable ability, and general applicability for a broad substrate scope, further highlighting the superiority of our active catalysts.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide hydrogenation into valuable chemicals is an attractive strategy for CO 2 fixation. Constructing bimetallic Fe-Co catalysts achieves high selectivity of heavy hydrocarbons instead of undesired methane is challenging, owing to the high methanation of cobalt. Herein, we develop an isolated dual-active sites of Fe-Co catalyst that separates Fe and Co via a carbon shell by multi-step impregnation combination with hydrothermal synthesis strategy. Fe-Co catalyst (C/FeCo 3 ) with an intimate contact presents a high CH 4 selectivity and low selectivity of C 5+ hydrocarbon. However, C 5+ hydrocarbon selectivity climbs from 19.8 % to 39.7 % over the cleverly designed wall-protection isolated dual-active sites of Fe-Co catalyst (C/Co 3 @C/Fe). The designed isolated structure between different active sites is conducive to chain propagation reaction by suppressing methanation reaction. As verified by in situ DRIFTS, more –CH 2 – species is enriched in the structure of C/Co 3 @C/Fe catalyst, which is considered as intermediate ingredient in the chain growth process. The designed structure catalyst strengthens the cascade reaction process of reverse water gas reaction and chain growth, and its combination with bimetallic catalysts may be a very potential measure for the preparation of bimetallic catalysts in the future.

Abstract:Regulating interfacial electronic structure of oxide-metal composite catalyst for the selective transformation of biomass or plastic waste into high-value chemicals through specific C-O bond scission is still challenging due to the presence of multiple reducible bonds and low catalytic activity. Herein, we find that the inverse catalyst of 4CeOx/Ni can efficiently transform various lignocellulose derivatives and polyether into the corresponding value-added hydroxyl-containing chemicals with activity enhancement (up to 36.5-fold increase in rate) compared to the conventional metal/oxide supported catalyst. In situ experiments and theoretical calculations reveal the electron-rich interfacial Ce and Ni species are responsible for the selective adsorption of C-O bond and efficient generation of Hδ- species, respectively, which synergistic facilitate cleavage of C-O bond and subsequent hydrogenation. This work advances the fundamental understanding of interfacial electronic interaction over inverse catalyst and provides a promising catalyst design strategy for efficient transformation of C-O bond.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted much attention due to their outstanding catalytic performance in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we report a template sacrificial method to fabricate an atomically dispersed Co catalyst; three kinds of silica templates with different microstructures (MCM-41, SBA-15, and FDU-12) were employed and the effect of pore structure of the templates on the dispersity of Co was investigated. The catalysts fabricated with different templates presented different Co dispersities, leading to distinguishing catalytic performance. The optimized Co1@NC-(SBA) catalyst with atomically dispersed Co displayed outstanding catalytic activity for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived species as well as the hydrogenation of various nitroaromatics. Abstract:Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of biomass-derived carbonyl compounds provides a viable strategy to synthesize high value-added chemicals and biofuels, for which the development of efficient catalysts still remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report a Zn-based single-atom catalyst (Zn/NC-950), prepared by pyrolysis of ZIF-8 at 950 degrees C, for the CTH of ethyl levulinate to gamma- valerolactone (GVL). This catalyst exhibited excellent performance, affording a GVL selectivity of 95.3 % at an ethyl levulinate conversion of 100 %, using isopropanol as the hydrogen source at 200 degrees C and autogenous pressure. The structural characterization and theoretical calculation demonstrate that such extraordinary efficacy of the Zn/NC-950 catalyst is attributed to the dual ZnN3C1 3 C 1 and Zn-N2C2 2 C 2 sites of low Zn oxidation states, which work synergistically to generate the active hydrogen species and activate the carbonyl bonds, respectively. This work provides a rationale for the precise design of the non-noble metal single-atom catalysts efficient for the biomass valorization.
In Situ-Generated Co0-Co3O4/N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes Hybrids As Efficient and Chemoselective Catalysts for Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes

Abstract:The earth-abundant nanohybrids Co-0/Co3O4@N-doped carbon nanotubes were fabricated via an efficient thermal condensation of D-glucosamine hydrochloride, melamine, and Co-(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O. The hybrids furnish excellent catalytic activity and perfect chemoselectivity (>99%) for a wide range of substituted nitroarenes (21 examples) under relatively mild conditions. The high catalytic performance and durability is attributed to the synergistic effects between each component, the unique structure of graphene layers-coated Co-0, and the electronic activation of doped nitrogen. Density functional calculations indicate that the inner Co-0 core and N species on the carbon shell can significantly decrease the dissociation energies of H-2, giving evidence of the ability of carbon shell in the hybrids to enable H-2 activation. These results open up an avenue to design more powerful low-cost catalysts for industrial applications.
Tailored design of novel Co0-Coδ+ dual phase nanoparticles for selective CO2 hydrogenation to ethanol

Abstract:Catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to ethanol is a promising solution to address the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but many current catalysts face efficiency and cost challenges. Cobalt based catalysts are frequently examined due to their abundance, cost-efficiency, and effectiveness in the reaction, where managing the Co0 to Coδ+ ratio is essential. In this study, we adjusted support nature (Al2O3, MgO-MgAl2O4, and MgO) and reduction conditions to optimize this balance of Co0 to Coδ+ sites on the catalyst surface, enhancing ethanol production. The selectivity of ethanol reached 17.9% in a continuous flow fixed bed micro-reactor over 20 mol% Co@MgO-MgAl2O4 (CoMgAl) catalyst at 270 °C and 3.0 MPa, when reduced at 400 °C for 8 h. Characterisation results coupled with activity analysis confirmed that mild reduction condition (400 °C, 10% H2 balance N2, 8 h) with intermediate metal support interaction favoured the generation of partially reduced Co sites (Coδ+ and Co0 sites in single atom) over MgO-MgAl2O4 surface, which promoted ethanol synthesis by coupling of dissociative (CHx*)/non-dissociative (CHxO*) intermediates, as confirmed by density functional theory analysis. Additionally, the CoMgAl, affordably prepared through the coprecipitation method, offers a potential alternative for CO2 hydrogenation to yield valuable chemicals.
