Abstract:In this article, we present the design, fabrication and control of a miniature soft robotic fish (SoRoFAAM-2) that mimics subcarangiform swwimmers. The soft body is designed by a suitable integration of several soft and smart materials by layer bonding technology. The versatility of the designed soft body endows SoRoFAAM-2 with multiple BCF-based locomotion modes among which subcarangiform is the most prevalent. The actuator skeleton is made up of an artificial muscle module that acts as the muscle and skeleton of SoRoFAAM-2. From a phenomenological model of SMA-wire we present a dynamics model of the artificial muscle module. This model is then used in simulation to identify a suitable heating strategy. Subsequently, the large number of integrated soft and smart materials with their known nonlinear, hysteresis and viscoelastic behaviour led us to use nonparametric models to develop the control system of SoRoFAAM-2. In fact, through experimentation, we develop two non-parametric models, viz. the relationship between the flapping frequency and the duty time on the one hand, and the relationship between the duty time and the actuation current on the other hand. The control system is implemented in a microcontroller that drives a programmable DC power supply to control SoRoFAAM-2. SoRoFAAM-2 is 200 mm long and weighs 25.5 g. Swimming experiments show that SoRoFAAM-2 has good bionic fidelity and swims like living fish. In particular,it has a Strouhal number of 0.43 which is quite close to that of living fish.
