Abstract:This paper studies the incorporation of migrant workers in the Chinese urban society and the challenges they face through questionnaire surveys on migrant workers and urban residents and corresponding statistical analysis.The authors argue that in Zhejiang Province,with its fast growing rural urbanization,there is a good amalgamation in the numbers of migrant workers and urban residents.Most migrant workers are satisfied with their lives in the cities,having strong desires to be incorporated into city life.73.61% of migrant workers want to have more interactions with the local urban residents;67.31% want to be recognized as part of the city;a little over 10% think they're not incorporated into the urban society at all.Psychologically,urban residents understand migrant workers rather than discriminate against them.In reality,however,they don't really want to have interactions with them.Urban residents get to know migrant workers mainly through newspapers and TV programs.The mass media has important influences on the attitudes of the urban residents.It therefore has an important task to help the urban residents understand migrant workers.The mass media should give more publicity to the migrant workers' new images and their great contributions to the urban construction.It has a lot to do in strengthening urban residents' positive impressions of migrant workers.The ″new dual social structure″ formed in the cities is a key institutional factor inhibiting the construction of a harmonious urban society.There are distinct differences between ″migrant workers″ and ″urban residents″.Although migrant workers are workers in urban industries,their retained identity as peasants from the country makes them suffer from serious and unfair treatment in terms of allocation(wages) and reallocation(social securities).They are marginalized,a vulnerable group unsecured in the cities.Therefore,promoting the integrated urban-rural reforms and entitling peasants to equal treatment with urban residents is an institutional guarantee for promoting the incorporation of migrant workers into the urban society and achieving a harmonious relationship between migrant workers and urban residents.The key solution is to have both urban and rural residents entitled to equal rights,obligations and development opportunities.That is to say,urban and rural residents should equally enjoy rights of property,education,employment,social securities,social welfare and individual development, and equally shoulder the compulsory obligations stipulated by laws and regulations.Urban and rural economic entities should equally enjoy such development opportunities as admission to certain industries and credit services,and equally shoulder such social obligations as taxes and labor insurances.

Abstract:With the rapid development of Chinese economy,many cities in China had appeared a special group of people which are called migrant workers from rural areas.At the same time the children of the migrant workers had been accounted for a considerable proportion in urban children.It is a special group that should not be ignored.Because of the social and family environment they lived in,the migrant children's subsistence and health status are different from the native children.It is very necessary to pay more attention and try to improve the migrant children's subsistence and health status,that would be helpful to improve the overall quality of the nation,and to embody the social equity.

Abstract:Surplus labor force and migration trends in China are examined, with emphasis on the impact of underemployment in rural areas. "Government policy encourages surplus labourers to transfer out of crop farming into agricultural sidelines or non-agricultural work. Peasants are urged to stay where they are, shifting jobs without shifting location; however, many rural areas are poorly endowed for providing alternative employment, so their surplus workers must also leave the village to find work. Many do not formally migrate, but rather move on a seasonal basis or set up 'temporary' residence in an urban place. This 'floating' population has been escalating rapidly in recent years....[The authors argue] that China's cities and towns can absorb millions of surplus labourers from rural areas each year, to the mutual benefit of sending and receiving areas."

Abstract:The hundreds of millions of migrant workers from China's vast rural hinterlands today constitute a significant part of the urban labour force. Residence in urban villages, to them, is a preferred and in most cases the only affordable choice. This study provides a systematic account of the profiles of migrants in urban villages and explores their sentiments towards the community as revealed by the levels of community satisfaction and community attachment. The results show that, while the urban villages offer no more than a shelter, migrants in such villages are integrated into the city in a certain manner. Community sentiments are mainly built upon the perceptions of neighbourhood quality and neighbourly relations, in addition to the effects of local involvement as well as migrants' social networks within the community.

Abstract:The rural migrant worker population in China is attracting more and more attention because of its magnitude and potential economic and social impact on Chinese society. While literature abounds in describing the demographic trends and economic impacts of rural to urban migration, very few articles have been written about the psychosocial impacts of migration on the lives of rural migrant workers in urban China. Drawing on the concept of marginalisation, this article describes the nature and characteristics of marginalised living experienced by migrant workers. More importantly, it examines the underlying policy issues contributing to such marginalised living. It is argued that the Hukou system (household registration system), the process of decentralisation and the obscure role of trade unions have contributed to the experience of marginalisation of rural migrant workers in urban cities in China. Implications for policy changes are also discussed.

Abstract:Manufacturing opportunities in urban China have led to the mass migration of over 270 million rural residents to urban areas. We investigate the resulting upheaval in Chinese society using a macromarketing framework, especially the effect on the family unit. A qualitative study of 34 adult migrants in Shanghai is used to put a human face on the challenges faced by those distant from their families of origin (and in many cases their own children) and yet ostracized by most of those in urban society.

Abstract:A team of Beijing-based urban planning specialists is joined by a noted American geographer to present the results and analyze their 2008 survey of migrant settlements in China's capital city. The paper examines the living and work conditions as well as housing consumption behavior of migrants in Chinese cities, focusing on chengzhongcun or urban villages-rural settlements that have been transformed into poor living spaces for migrant workers. It finds that although migrant workers arc willing to pay the same or higher rent per unit of space, they consume much smaller dwelling spaces than local residents. Estimations of the Mincerian wage equation and of a housing demand equation show that migrants' small space consumption is a function not only of low income but also of a reluctance to spend their earnings in the city. The findings reinforce the notion that migrant workers consider the city as a place to work rather than a home in which to live. Abstract:Based on a survey in Shandong,Shanxi,Jilin and Zhejiang provinces,this paper gives a comprehensive analysis on the current situation and change of urban employment and living situation of rural-urban migrants during the past 10 years.Since 1998,the share of the long distance migration has grown increasingly.The urban migrants from rural China are mainly high-quality younger generation and most of them prefer to local employment especially in developed area.On the whole,their urban employment and living situation have been improved.However,employment guarantee,children accompany and children's education have not been improved.We suggest that government should try to offer more urban employment opportunities,improve employment environment and human capital,and pay more attention to accompanied children education,so that urban and rural can develop harmoniously.

Abstract:Examines the working conditions of rural migrant workers in China. The paper first describes the increase in the number of migrants, from an estimated 30 million in 1989 to about 130 million in 2006. It then provides some descriptive statistics on the regions of origin of migrants, their destinations, the sectors in which they are employed, as well as on their age, sex and level of education. The paper goes on to discuss the difficult working conditions of many rural migrant workers in the Chinese labour market, in particular their low wages, the problems of wage arrears, the lack of written contracts, the long working hours, the short weekly rest periods, the low social security coverage, the poor housing conditions, and the difficulties they face in accessing public services.

Abstract:This article collects nearly 20,000 migrant workers’ posts from the People’s Daily Online Leaders’ Message Board (difang lingdao liuyanban) between 2011 and 2019 using web crawler technology. Through the methods of word segmentation and word frequency statistics, this article analyzes the claims of migrant workers in the process of social integration. The results of word frequency statistics show that migrant workers' claims are ranked as follows: salary, labor rights, housing, children's education, social security, returning home to start a business, and hukou (household registration system). Among them, the claims regarding salary are the most urgent. From the regional perspective, migrant workers in the west publish the largest number of posts, followed by migrant workers in the east and in the center. This article argues that, in accordance with these claims, the government formulates corresponding public policies to help migrant workers achieve the triple conversion of occupation, life, and identity from being farmers to becoming urban citizens, which is of great significance for allowing migrant workers to better integrate into urban life and improve their living standards. Based on the analysis, this article puts forward corresponding public policy recommendations.

Abstract:Objectives There are currently around 120 million rural–urban migrants in China. Elsewhere migration has been associated with increased vulnerability to mental health problems. This study was conducted to explore the mental health status and help seeking behaviours of migrant workers in Hangzhou city, Zhejiang Province, and to compare them with permanent urban and rural dwellers. Methods A self-completion questionnaire including items relating to sociodemographics, health and lifestyles and mental health, was completed by 4453 migrant workers and 1957 urban workers in Hangzhou city, and by 1909 rural residents in Western Zhejiang Province. Results The mean age of the migrants was 27 years, (male 29 years, female 25 years). They worked long hours (28% >12 h per day, 81% 6 or 7 days per week) and their living conditions were very basic. On the SF-36 mental health scale migrants had lower scores (52.4) than rural residents (60.4, P < 0.0001) but scored higher than urban residents (47.2, P = 0.003). The difference between urbanites and migrants disappeared after adjustment for confounders ( P = 0.06). Independent predictors of better mental health status among migrants were being unmarried, migrating with a partner, higher salary, good self-reported health and good relationships with co-workers. There were small significant differences in suicide ideation and attempts between the three groups with suicide ideation commonest in migrants and suicide attempts most common in the rural population. Fewer than 1% across all three groups had received any professional help for depression or anxiety. Conclusion Rural–urban migrant workers in this part of China are not especially vulnerable to poor mental health. This may result from a sense of well being associated with upward economic mobility and improved opportunities, and the relatively high social capital in migrant communities.

Abstract:This paper employs a simple theoretical model of labor allocation within rural households given existing land arrangements in an attempt to explain why rural Chinese do not fully participate in labor migration. It first explores the mechanisms by which individual household and community characteristics affect the migration decision. Empirical results are then presented to substantiate the derived hypotheses. The paper further explores the question of whether the migration decision is permanent by analyzing the responses of household consumption to income from migration. (EXCERPT)

Abstract:Background In China, an increasing number of rural mothers participate in urban labour markets, but little is known about their decisions regarding childcare while living in these cities. Why do some rural mothers migrate to the cities with their children, whereas others leave their children behind in the countryside? Methods This study analysed 1852 samples from the 2016 China Migrant Dynamic Survey of rural migrant mothers collected in the Pearl River Delta (PRD). These mothers were registered with agricultural hukou outside of the PRD and had at least one child under 18 years of age. Results The results indicated that 57.8% of these mothers migrated together with their children. Rural migrant mothers who were self‐employed, had a higher level of household income on a log10 scale and had a longer duration of migration were more willing to adopt closely performing motherhood than rural migrant mothers who were not self‐employed. Additionally, rural working mothers who were intra‐provincial migrants and had a smaller number of children were more likely to bring their children to the cities than rural working mothers who were inter‐provincial migrants. Conclusions This study works to strengthen the understanding of rural migrant working mothers' childcare strategies, provide insights for future policy studies and contribute to evidence‐based recommendations for policymakers regarding internal rural‐to‐urban migration, migrant women and the wellbeing of the families of migrants.

Abstract:Because of the extra - small scale farming and the averagely owned cultivated land, at present not only the excessive rural labors but some of the labors necessary for farming development migrate into the urban in China's rural areas. Paradoxically there are a large scale surplus rural labors on the whole and the shortage of rural labors in some families or some areas at the same time. It seems necessary to build up a mechanism of cultivated land distribution in terms of the rapid urbanization, that is, let those with excessive labors or those who are good at farming have the excessive land of the families which are short of labors.

Abstract:In recent years, Beijing has implemented urban renewal policies aimed at forcing out rural migrants to restrict the city's population. One such policy restricts their access to public schools. We use the demolition of the Beijing Sun Palace Farmers' Market to examine the long-term impacts of these policies on the educational status of migrant children in Beijing. Based on a survey and in-depth interviews with migrant vendors, we find that government-initiated urban remodelling campaigns have an enduring impact on their social mobility and the educational opportunities of their children. Despite severe limitations to their mobility and economic opportunities, many migrant vendors were still determined to stay in Beijing. Subsequently, their worsened living status significantly affected their children's prospects. Migrant children caught in this urban dynamic either struggle in substandard informal migrant schools in Beijing or are left behind in their hometowns, with little hope of a good education or improved social status.
