Abstract:Emerging applications of photochromic compounds demand new molecular designs that can be inspired by some long-known yet currently forgotten classes of photoswitches. In the present review, we would like to remind the community about Peri-AryloxyQuinones (PAQs) and their unique photoswitching behavior originally discovered by Gerasimenko more than 50 years ago. At the heart of this phenomenon is the light-induced migration of an aromatic moiety (arylotropy) in peri-aryloxy-substituted quinones resulting in ana-quinones. PAQs feature absorbance of both isomers in the visible spectral region, photochromism in the amorphous and crystalline state, and thermal stability of the photogenerated ana-isomer. Particularly noticeable is the high sensitivity of the ana-isomer towards nucleophiles in solution. In addition to the mechanism of molecular photochromism and the underlaying structure-switch relationships, we analyze potential applications and prospects of aryloxyquinones in optically switchable materials and devices. Due to their ability to efficiently photoswitch in the solid state, PAQs are indeed attractive candidates for such materials and devices, including electronics (optically controllable circuits, switches, transistors, memories, and displays), porous crystalline materials, crystalline actuators, photoactivated sensors, and many more. This review is intended to serve as a guide for researchers who wish to use photoswitchable PAQs in the development of new photocontrollable materials, devices, and processes.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the potential of the forgotten photochromic system of peri-aryloxyquinones (PAQs) in emerging applications. PAQs are a unique class of photo-switchable molecules, first discovered by Gerasimenko over 50 years ago, with the core phenomenon being the migration of aromatic groups in peri-aryloxy substituted quinone compounds under light, resulting in the formation of ana-quinone compounds. This migration process is known as "arylotropy." PAQs are characterized by the absorption of two isomers in the visible spectrum, photochromism in both amorphous and crystalline states, and the thermal stability of the resulting ana-isomer. Particularly noteworthy is the high sensitivity of the ana-isomer to nucleophiles in solution. Moreover, PAQs are capable of efficient photochromism in the solid state, making them ideal candidates for a variety of materials and devices such as electronic devices (e.g., photo-controlled circuits, switches, transistors, memories, and displays), porous crystalline materials, crystal actuators, and photo-activated sensors. The paper provides a detailed analysis of the molecular photochromic mechanism and structure-switch relationship of PAQs and discusses their potential applications in the development of photo-controllable materials, devices, and processes. PAQs, due to their efficient solid-state photochromism, are considered a guide for researchers using photo-switchable PAQs in novel photo-controllable materials, devices, and processes. Overall, the paper aims to rekindle interest in PAQs within the chemistry and materials science communities and to highlight their potential value as novel photo-controllable materials and devices, especially in fields such as electronics, optical storage, biomedicine, catalysis, renewable energy, and molecular electronics.
