Abstract:Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has emerged as a promising, advanced technology in remote sensing and has demonstrated great potential in the exploitation of a wide variety of data. In particular, its capability has expanded from unmixing data samples and detecting targets at the subpixel scale to finding endmembers, which generally cannot be resolved by multispectral imaging. Accordingly, a wealth of new HSI research has been conducted and reported in the literature in recent years. The aim of this Special Issue “Advances in Hyperspectral Data Exploitation“ is to provide a forum for scholars and researchers to publish and share their research ideas and findings to facilitate the utility of hyperspectral imaging in data exploitation and other applications. With this in mind, this Special Issue accepted and published 19 papers in various areas, which can be organized into 9 categories, including I: Hyperspectral Image Classification, II: Hyperspectral Target Detection, III: Hyperspectral and Multispectral Fusion, IV: Mid-wave Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging, V: Hyperspectral Unmixing, VI: Hyperspectral Sensor Hardware Design, VII: Hyperspectral Reconstruction, VIII: Hyperspectral Visualization, and IX: Applications.

Abstract:Recently, many blind source separation (BSS)-based techniques have been applied to hyperspectral unmixing. In this paper, a new blind spectral unmixing method based on sparse component analysis (BSUSCA) is proposed to solve the problem of highly mixed data. The BSUSCA algorithm consists of an alternative scheme based on two-block alternating optimization, by which we can simultaneously obtain the endmember signatures and their corresponding fractional abundances. According to the spatial distribution of the endmembers, the sparse properties of the fractional abundances are considered in the proposed algorithm. A sparse component analysis (SCA)-based mixing matrix estimation method is applied to update the endmember signatures, and the abundance estimation problem is solved by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). SCA is utilized for the unmixing due to its various advantages, including the unique solution and robust modeling assumption. The robustness of the proposed algorithm is verified through simulated experimental study. The experimental results using both simulated data and real hyperspectral remote sensing images confirm the high efficiency and precision of the proposed algorithm.
Realistic Mixing Miniature Scene Hyperspectral Unmixing: from Benchmark Datasets to Autonomous Unmixing

Abstract:Mixed pixels that contain more than one material type are common in mid/low spatial resolution remote sensing imagery. Hyperspectral unmixing is aimed at decomposing the mixed pixels into endmembers and abundances. However, there are few datasets that are suitable for quantitatively evaluating unmixing accuracies, and the ground-truth abundances of the existing datasets are often generated in an approximate way. To address the lack of real unmixing datasets for quantitative evaluation, we built the realistic mixing miniature scenes (RMMS) dataset, which can be used to quantitatively evaluate the unmixing accuracy of different algorithms. The RMMS dataset consists of a simple mixture scene with homogeneous flat materials and a complex mixture scene with 3-D structural features. The features of the RMMS dataset also take point, line, and polygon characteristics into consideration, and the spectral similarity of the materials increases the challenge of the spectral unmixing. In the RMMS dataset, due to the multiscale observation characteristics of the spatiotemporal scanning modality, it can avoid the registration error between RGB and hyperspectral data, and it can ensure that the endmembers are pure pixels. Most of the autonomous hyperspectral unmixing algorithms focus on solving some of the unmixing problems and have difficulty achieving fully autonomous hyperspectral unmixing (FAHU). In this article, to overcome this shortcoming, a fully autonomous hyperspectral unmixing method called FAHU is proposed to take advantage of the spatial information. Some of the state-of-the-art autonomous hyperspectral unmixing algorithms are used to evaluate the performance with the RMMS dataset, and the experimental results show the advantages and disadvantages of the different autonomous unmixing algorithms.

Abstract:In 2012, the Workshop on Hyperspectral Image and Signal Processing: Evolution in Remote Sensing (WHISPERS), sponsored by IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, moved to Shanghai, China. There were 91 oral presentations and 31 posters. Three plenary speakers: Professor Qingxi Tong from Peking University, China, Professor Jean-Pierre Bibring from University of Paris, France, and Professor Susan Ustin from University of California, Davis, USA, introduced their cutting-edge research in this field. Following the success of this fourth WHISPERS edition, it is our great pleasure to introduce this special issue in order to present the most recent developments. A large number of submissions were received, and 29 papers have been accepted after rigorous review. A few of the submissions will be published in the following issues of JSTARS, after the final reviews and revisions are completed. In the remainder of this Foreword, we briefly introduce these 29 accepted papers, which cover several important topics. In particular, 9 of these 29 papers are related to hyperspectral remote sensing applications, which well fit the scope of the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing (JSTARS).

Abstract:Imaging spectrometer is one important aspect of contemporary remote sensing developments. It is characterized by huge amount of supermultipal spectral image data provision. For less remote sensing image data provision, we used to put all the data directly into the process of image object recognition without making any data fusion. Even occasional data fusion is experiential. This situation is not suitable for imaging spectrometer. The supermultipal bands of imaging spectrometer provide us with much more freedom on available choices of suitable images for procession and information extraction; at the same time, fusion between different related image data aimed at themes extracting can reduce the amount of data on one hand, and make most use of imaging spectrometer image data on the other. And to some extent, image data fusion is of utmost importance and practical significance for theme information extracting from imaging spectrometer images. This paper discusses fusion methods for conventional remote sensing data. Blind Spectral Unmixing Considering the Adjacent Effect

Abstract:Blind hyperspectral unmixing (HU) technique aims at identifying pure materials in a hyperspectral image (HSI), called endmembers, and quantifying the corresponding proportions, called abundances, with little prior knowledge. In this paper, the degradation mechanism during data collection - adjacent effect (AE), is considered in the process of blind HU. Since the AE leads to blurring (the loss of sharpness, contrast and apparent resolution) in scene, it blocks the quantitative analysis of HSI in sub-pixel level and makes the estimated endmembers and abundances inaccurate. To solve this problem, a bilinear mixing model is developed to simulate the AE, and a novel algorithm, termed joint deconvolution and blind HU (DBHU) is proposed. In DBHU, the bi-convex optimization problem is efficiently solved by a nonstandard application of the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm, where a block coordinate descent scheme is applied by splitting the original problem into two saddle-point subproblems and then minimizing the subproblems alternatively via ADMM until convergence. The experimental results on both simulated and real HSI illustrate the viability of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:This special issue follows the one in June 2008 and is related to the very successful series of the Joint Urban Remote Sensing Events, held every two years since 2005. Remote sensing of urban areas is at the moment facing a rapid development, due to the increasing amount of High Resolution (UR) and Very High Resolution VHR (VHR) data in both the optical/IR and microwave regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. On a global scale, human settlements have always been the focus of interest, but only in these days there starts to be an interest in mapping and monitoring even small and informal ones by satellites. Coherently, urban area mapping is moving from basic land cover to more complex land use maps, and human settlement environmental monitoring is committed to a more and more integrated use of remote sensing and in situ data. By presenting excellent papers on these subjects, this special issue tries and provides an overview of the state-of-the-art in this interesting field of applied earth observation and remote sensing.

Abstract:Blind hyperspectral unmixing (HU), also known as unsupervised HU, is one of the most prominent research topics in signal processing (SP) for hyperspectral remote sensing [1], [2]. Blind HU aims at identifying materials present in a captured scene, as well as their compositions, by using high spectral resolution of hyperspectral images. It is a blind source separation (BSS) problem from a SP viewpoint. Research on this topic started in the 1990s in geoscience and remote sensing [3]-[7], enabled by technological advances in hyperspectral sensing at the time. In recent years, blind HU has attracted much interest from other fields such as SP, machine learning, and optimization, and the subsequent cross-disciplinary research activities have made blind HU a vibrant topic. The resulting impact is not just on remote sensing - blind HU has provided a unique problem scenario that inspired researchers from different fields to devise novel blind SP methods. In fact, one may say that blind HU has established a new branch of BSS approaches not seen in classical BSS studies. In particular, the convex geometry concepts - discovered by early remote sensing researchers through empirical observations [3]-[7] and refined by later research - are elegant and very different from statistical independence-based BSS approaches established in the SP field. Moreover, the latest research on blind HU is rapidly adopting advanced techniques, such as those in sparse SP and optimization. The present development of blind HU seems to be converging to a point where the lines between remote sensing-originated ideas and advanced SP and optimization concepts are no longer clear, and insights from both sides would be used to establish better methods.

Abstract:Hyperspectral imagery (HSI) unmixing is a process that decomposes pixel spectra into a collection of constituent spectra (endmembers) and their correspondent abundance fractions. Without knowing any knowledge of HSI data, the unmixing problem is transformed into a blind source separation (BSS) problem. Several methods have been proposed to deal with the problem, like independent component analysis (ICA). In this paper, we introduce spatial complexity that applies Markov random field (MRF) to characterize the spatial correlation information of abundance fractions. Compared to previous BSS techniques for HSI unmixing, the major advantage of our approach is that it totally considers HSI spatial structure. Additionally, a proof is given that spatial complexity is suitable for HSI unmixing. Encouraging results have been obtained in terms of unmixing accuracy, suggesting the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:Hyperspectral unmixing (HU) is a crucial technique for exploiting remotely sensed hyperspectral data, which aims at estimating a set of spectral signatures, called endmembers and their corresponding proportions, called abundances. The performance of HU is often seriously degraded by various kinds of noise existing in hyperspectral images (HSIs). Most of existing robust HU methods are based on the assumption that noise or outlier only exists in one kind of formulation, e.g., band noise or pixel noise. However, in real-world applications, HSIs are unavoidably corrupted by noisy bands and noisy pixels simultaneously, which require robust HU in both the spatial dimension and spectral dimension. Meanwhile, the sparsity of abundances is an inherent property of HSIs and different regions in an HSI may possess various sparsity levels across locations. This article proposes a correntropy-based spatial-spectral robust sparsity-regularized unmixing model to achieve 2-D robustness and adaptive weighted sparsity constraint for abundances simultaneously. The updated rules of the proposed model are efficient to be implemented and carried out by a half-quadratic technique. The experimental results obtained by both synthetic and real hyperspectral data demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:Remotely sensed hyperspectral images contain several bands (at about adjoining frequencies) for a similar zone on the surface of the Earth. Hyperspectral unmixing is a significant method for breaking down hyperspectral images into the components (endmembers) that conform each (potentially mixed) pixel and their abundance maps. Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) has attracted huge consideration because of the way that it can address mixed pixel scenarios. Most existing NMF unmixing techniques do not include spatial information in the analysis. An ongoing trend is to fuse the spatial and the spectral information contained in hyperspectral scenes to improve the solution. In this article, we build up another hyperspectral unmixing technique named spectral–spatial weighted sparse NMF (SSWNMF), in which two weighting factors are acquainted into the NMF model to upgrade the sparsity of the solution and capture the piecewise smooth structure of the data. We adopt a multiplicative iterative strategy to implement the proposed SSWNMF model. Our experimental results, conducted with both synthetic and real hyperspectral data, uncover that the proposed SSWNMF strategy can get accurate unmixing results over those gave by other unmixing strategies, with less parameter tuning.

A Super Resolution Approach for Spectral Unmixing of Remote Sensing Images

Abstract:It is well known that coarse spatial resolution is an important factor for the occurrence of mixed pixels in remote sensing images, and conventional approaches for spectral unmixing adopt various techniques on spectral dimension only in a fixed spatial resolution. In this article, a super resolution (SR) approach for spectral unmixing is proposed, based on the assumption that increasing the spatial resolution helps to retrieve the composition of a pixel. Firstly, a remote sensing image is downscaled into an SR image using example-based kernel ridge regression (EBKRR). Secondly, the SR image is classified using supervised hard classification, and then the class map is decomposed into thematic class layers. Thirdly, the thematic class layers are upscaled into the original spatial resolution with an averaging operation, and the abundance maps are finally derived. In two simulated data-based experiments and one ground data-based experiment, this approach was compared with linear spectral mixture analysis (LSMA) and artificial neural network (ANN)-based spectral unmixing methods. The accuracy assessment indicated that the SR approach outperformed LSMA and ANN under measurements of mean absolute error and absolute bias in the three experiments.

Abstract:The spectral signatures of the materials contained in hyperspectral images, also called endmembers (EMs), can be significantly affected by variations in atmospheric, illumination, and environmental conditions that typically occur within an image. Traditional spectral unmixing (SU) algorithms neglect the spectral variability of the EMs, which propagates significant modeling errors throughout the whole unmixing process and compromises the quality of the results. Therefore, serious efforts have been dedicated to mitigating the effects of spectral variability in SU. This resulted in the development of algorithms that incorporate different strategies to enable the EMs to vary within a hyperspectral image, using, for instance, sets of spectral signatures known a priori as well as Bayesian, parametric, and local EM models.

Abstract:Super resolution-based spectral unmixing (SRSU) is a recently developed method for spectral unmixing of remotely sensed imagery, but it is too complex to implement for common users who are interested in land cover mapping. This study makes use of spatial interpolation as an alternative approach to achieve super resolution reconstruction in SRSU. An ASTER image with three spectral bands was used as the test data. The algorithm is evaluated using root mean square error (RMSE) compared with linear spectral unmixing and hard classification. The result shows that the proposed algorithm has higher unmixing accuracy than those of the other comparative algorithms, and it is proved as an efficient and convenient spectral unmixing tool of remotely sensed imagery.

Abstract:Abstract. Spectral variability is an inevitable problem in spectral unmixing. The linear mixing model (LMM) is often used due to its simplicity and mathematical tractability. Unfortunately, the linear mixing assumption is not always true in many real scenarios. To address this issue, we adopt a variant of the LMM to take care of spectral variability, called scaled and perturbed LMM, which can be used to constrain modeling reflectance scaling caused by topography or illumination, and simulating irregular spectral variabilities. To facilitate effective optimizations of the variables, a few regularizations are employed to regularize the introduced constraints and an alternating direction method of multipliers algorithm is further used to optimize all the variables of this model. Experimental results obtained from a synthetic dataset and two real datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms other algorithms in unmixing hyperspectral images with spectral variabilities.
