Abstract:Metal ions are widely distributed in nature and they have key roles in the environment, bioscience and medical science. Some metal ions,such as Hg2+,Fe3+,Cu2+,Zn2+and Al3+,play important roles in the physiology and pathology of organisms. An excess or deficiency of these metal ions would lead to physiological dysfunction and cause a variety of diseases. Recently,reaction-based fluorescence probes have attracted considerable attention due to their high sensitivity and good selectivity. This review mainly focuses on reaction-based fluorescence probes for the detection of metal ions in the past five years. The design and synthesis of probes,their sensing mechanisms and their applications were summarized. Currently,the reaction-based fluorescence probes are still in their initial stages and hence many problems need to be solved. With the resolution of these problems, reaction-based fluorescence probes would show higher sensitivities with less reaction-time and possess wider applications. In the future,reaction-based fluorescence probes should show efficient development in biological detection and expand practical applications.

Abstract:Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) including carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have drawn great interest because of their low cost and low toxicity, and they represent a new class of carbon materials prepared by simple synthetic routes. In particular, the optical properties of CDs can be easily tuned by the surface passivation of the organic layer and functionalization of the CDs. Based on the advantages of these carbon materials, CQDs and GQDs have been applied in various fields as nanoplatforms for sensing, imaging, and delivery. In this review, we discuss several synthetic methods for preparing CQDs and GQDs, as well as their physical properties, and further discuss the progress in CD research with an emphasis on their application in heavy metal sensing.

Abstract:N-rich metal-free and metal-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been prepared through one-step hydrothermal method using tetraphenylporphyrin or its transition metal (Pd or Pt) complex as precursor. The structures and morphology of the as-prepared nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. Three kinds of nanocomposites show similar structures except for the presence of metal ions in Pd-CQDs and Pt-CQDs indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All of them display bright blue emission upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation. The CQDs exhibit typical excitation-dependent emission behavior, with the emission quantum yield of 10.1%, 17.8%, and 15.2% for CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs, respectively. Moreover, the CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs could serve as fluorescent probes for the specific and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions in aqueous solution. The low cytotoxicity of CQDs is demonstrated by MTT assay against HeLa cells. Therefore, the CQDs can be used as efficient probes for cellular multicolor imaging and fluorescence sensors for the detection of Fe3+ ions due to their low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and low detection limits. This work provides a new route to synthesize highly luminescent N-rich metal-free or metal-doped CQDs for multifunctional applications.

Abstract:Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals or quantum dots (QDs) have been facilitating the development of sensitive fluorescence sensors over the past decade, due to their unique photophysical properties, versatile surface chemistry and ligand binding ability, and the possibility of the encapsulation in different materials or attachment to different functional materials, while retaining their native luminescence property. The optical metal ion chemosensors with high sensitivity and selectivity have been developed due to the importance of the metal ions' fundamental roles, possessed in a wide range of biological processes and the aquatic environment. This review addresses the different sensing strategies with chemically modified QD hybrid structures for the sensing of metal ions in aqueous solution or an in vivo environment, and discusses the photophysical mechanisms in the different sensor systems while comparing their detecting/sensing selectivity. The perspectives for the future potential developments in QD based optical sensing for metal ions are discussed.
High-purity C3N quantum dots for enhancing fluorescence detection of metal ions

Abstract:A new type of two-dimensional layered material, namely C 3 N, has been fabricated by polymerization and recommended to have great potential in various applications such as the development of electronic devices or photo-detectors, due to its enhanced conductivity, electronegativity, and unique optical properties. Actually, most of the present research on C 3 N is limited in the scope of theoretical calculation, while experimental research is blocked by inefficient synthesis with low purity and homogeneity. Here, we report an optimized efficient synthesis method of high-purity C 3 N QDs in aqueous solution by polymerization of DAP with combined centrifugation and filtration of products, with the synthesis yield up to 33.1 ± 3.1%. Subsequently, the C 3 N QDs have been used as novel metal ion probes exhibiting a sensitive fluorescent response to various metal ions including monovalent alkaline metals (Li + , Na + , and K + ), divalent alkaline-earth metals (Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , and Sr 2+ ), and multivalent transition metals (Cu 2+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , and Au 3+ , Fe 3+ , Cr 3+ ) due to the high electronegativity of the C 3 N surface. Particularly, the fluorescent quenching response of Al 3+ , Ga 3+ , In 3+ , and Sc 3+ ions is significantly different from the fluorescent enhanced response of most other carbon-based QDs, which is promising for enriching the detection methods of these metal ions and beneficial to improve the accuracy of ion recognition.

Abstract:DNA-templated fluorescent nanoclusters (NCs) have attracted increasing research interest on account of their prominent features, such as DNA sequence-dependent fluorescence, easy functionalization, wide availability, water solubility, and excellent biocompatibility. Coupling DNA templates with complementary DNA, aptamers, G-quadruplex, and so on has generated a large number of sensors. Additionally, the preparation and applications of DNA-templated fluorescent NCs in these sensing have been widely studied. This review firstly focuses on the properties of DNA-templated fluorescent NCs, and the synthesis of DNA-templated fluorescent NCs with different metals is then discussed. In the third part, we mainly introduce the applications of DNA-templated fluorescent NCs for sensing metal ions. At last, we further discuss the future perspectives of DNA-templated fluorescent NCs in the synthesis and sensing metal ions in the environmental and biological fields.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are zero-dimensional nanomaterials composed of carbon and surface groups attached to their surface. CDs have a size smaller than 10 nm and have potential applications in different fields such as metal ion detection, photodegradation of pollutants, and bio-imaging, in this review, the capabilities of CDs in metal ion detection will be described. Quantum confinement is generally viewed as the key factor contributing to the uniqueness of CDs characteristics due to their small size and the lack of attention on the surface functional groups and their roles is given, however, in this review paper, the focus will be on the functional group and the composition of CDs. The surface functional groups depend on two parameters: (i) the oxidation of precursors and (ii) their composition. The mechanism of metal ion detection is still being studied and is not fully understood. This review article emphasizes the current development and progress of CDs, focusing on metal ion detection based on a new perspective.

Abstract:A novel and simple method to prepare well dispersed single-walled carbon nanotubes with strong visible fluorescence in water is reported. The visible fluorescence was found to be responsive to pH value and metal ions, and tunable emission ability of oxidized SWCNTs depending on the excitation wavelength and a novel self-excitation and emission process were found.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are a new class of carbon-rich materials with a range of unique optical and structural properties. They can be defined as carbon nanoparticles, with sizes in the range of 1–10 nm, displaying absorption and emission activities in the UV-VIS range. Depending on the structure, CQDs display a wide variability of properties, which provides the possibility of finely tuning them for several applications. The great advantages of CQDs are certainly the ease of synthesis, non-toxicity, and the strong interactions with the surrounding environment. Based on this, CQDs are especially promising as selective chemosensors. The present study reports on carbon quantum dots synthesized with a top-down (TD) approach, and characterized by different optical, spectroscopic, and morphological techniques to identify the selectivity for metal ions belonging to the first transition series. In particular, the study focuses on the interaction between two samples, namely TD and TDA, featuring different surface functionalization, and heavy metal ions. Their sensing towards Co2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Zn2+, and Ni2+ has been tested by fluorescence (PL), steady state absorption spectroscopy, and time-resolved PL spectroscopy, in order to determine the fluorescence quenching. We found a PL quenching in the presence of concentrations of metal salts starting from 0.5 μM, and a selectivity towards the interacting ions, depending on CQDs’ surface features paving the way for their use for sensing.

Abstract:Many heavy metals pose significant threats to the environment and human health. Traditional methods for detecting heavy metals are often limited by complex procedures, high costs, and challenges in field monitoring. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), a novel class of fluorescent carbon nanomaterials, have garnered significant interest due to their excellent biocompatibility, low cost, and minimal toxicity. This paper reviews the primary synthesis methods, luminescence mechanisms, and fluorescence quenching mechanisms of CQDs, as well as their recent applications in detecting heavy metals. In heavy metal sensing applications, the simplest hydrothermal method is commonly employed for the one-step synthesis and surface modification of CQDs. Various green reagents and biomass materials, such as citric acid, glutathione, orange peel, and bagasse, can be used for CQDs' preparation. Quantum confinement effects and surface defects give CQDs their distinctive luminescence properties, enabling the detection of heavy metals through fluorescence quenching or enhancement. Additionally, CQDs can be applied in biological imaging and smart detection, and when combined with adsorption materials, they can offer multifunctional capabilities. This review also discusses the future development prospects of CQDs.

Abstract:Metal ions are ubiquitous elements within our environments. Their excessive accumulation poses a great threat to human health. With the development of biology and bioanalytical chemistry, the role played by metal ions in many biological and chemical processes is revealed. Since trace amounts of metal ions can lead to essential influences, there is a growing demand for the study of highly sensitive and selective sensors. Among them, functional nucleic acid (FNA)-based fluorescent probes are proposed as ideal options. The programmability of FNA is constantly integrated with various kinds of fluorophores and strategies for efficient sensing assays. However, a comprehensive review of their advancements in medical and chemical areas is still needed. This review aims to summarize the FNA-based fluorescent methods for the detection and imaging of various metal ions. We focus on the unique properties of metal ions and versatile design strategies. In principle, each signaling strategy can be employed for different FNA-based sensors. Besides, the applications of DNA-templated nanomaterials, conformation-specific fluorophores and isothermal amplification are discussed. This comprehensive review can inspire more advanced fluorescent methods for metal ion sensing and promote the development of FNA for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Visually colorimetric sensing of hazardous metallic ions based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has been considered a facile, on-site, and reliable monitoring route, yet the improvement of detection limit, as well as environmental pH tolerance, is still needed. Herein, we present an integrated probe design based on functionalizing AuNP cores with carbon quantum dots (CQD) as colorimetric probes for tracing Cu 2+ ions with a limit of detection as low as 18.7 nM. Improved detection selectivity was elucidated with the reduction in thiol groups bound between CQD decorations and AuNP probes initiated by oxidation of Cu 2+ ion analytes, thus separating crossly connected probes, depending on tracing Cu 2+ concentrations. Moreover, distributed CQDs with negative potentials allowed the stabilization of dispersed AuNPs against re-aggregation, which caused the gradual morphological transition from aggregated features to dispersed states in microscopic view, and eventually, reflected the gradual color change from red to purple-red. The correlated practicality of colorimetric detection of the Cu 2+ ion was further validated with sound-sensing selectivity, environmental pH resistance and tests on real samples.

Abstract:Surface modification is an important method for regulating the carbon quantum dots structure and enhancing the performance. Herein, green fluorescent carbon quantum dots (G-CQDs) were synthesized by the solvothermal method using p -phenylenediamine as carbon source, diethylenetriamine as modifier and anhydrous ethanol as solvent. G-CQDs were characterized by TEM , FTIR, XPS, UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy , fluorescence spectroscopy and Zeta potential . The particle size of G-CQDs was about 2.11 nm and the fluorescence quantum yield of G-CQDs was increased from 1.07 % to 28.90 % after diethylenetriamine modification. The increase of nitrogen and oxygen contents after modification enriches the oxygen-containing and nitrogen-containing groups on the surface, providing more reaction sites for metal ions. It was further found that G-CQDs can detect Fe 3+ and Co 2+ based on two different fluorescence "on-off" mechanisms with detection limits of 0.88 μM and 0.95 μM, respectively. In practical applications, the excellent fluorescence performance of G-CQDs for information anti-counterfeiting has a good effect. It was used for the detection of Fe 3+ and Co 2+ in tap water, the spike recovery were in the range of 98.11 % ∼ 106.80 % and 95.87 % ∼ 104.49 %, respectively, showing good accuracy and reproducibility.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots are a novel form of carbon material. They offer numerous benefits including particle size adjustability, light resistance, ease of functionalization, low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and high-water solubility, as well as their easy accessibility of raw materials. Carbon quantum dots have been widely used in various fields. The preparation methods employed are predominantly top-down methods such as arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical and chemical oxidation, as well as bottom-up methods such as templates, microwave, and hydrothermal techniques. This article provides an overview of the properties, preparation methods, raw materials for preparation, and the heteroatom doping of carbon quantum dots, and it summarizes the applications in related fields, such as optoelectronics, bioimaging, drug delivery, cancer therapy, sensors, and environmental remediation. Finally, currently encountered issues of carbon quantum dots are presented. The latest research progress in synthesis and application, as well as the challenges outlined in this review, can help and encourage future research on carbon quantum dots.

Abstract:Water-soluble luminescent thiol-capped CdTe QDs and nanorods have been synthesized and used to investigate the effect on their photoluminescence (PL) responses to divalent metal ions, such as zinc, calcium, magnesium, manganese, nickel, and cobalt ions. The change trends of PL were nearly similar for both CdTe QDs and nanorods. The zinc ions enhanced the photoluminescence, while the manganese, nickel, and cobalt ions quenched the PL. The effect on the PL response of CdTe QDs to divalent metal ions could be described by Langmuir-type binding model or Stern–Volmer-type equation. The CdTe nanorods were more sensitive to metal cations than QDs, and their enhancement mechanisms are different. CdTe QDs and nanorods maybe used as selective ion probes and developed as fluorescence sensors.

Abstract:Carbon-based quantum dots, zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterials that can be widely used with a particle size of 1-10nm, can be widely used in fluorescent carbon nanomaterials in thousands of households. This article will first elaborate on carbon-based quantum dots and metal nanomaterials and explain the related methods of making them. First, the top-down method is used to prepare carbon quantum dots, the fluorescence mechanism of carbon-based quantum dots is used, and the electrochemical method is used at high temperature. Carbonization burning method and laser ablation method, the mixture of graphite powder and polyethylene glycol ester is hot pressed, baked, and cut in an argon atmosphere to obtain strong fluorescent carbon-based quantum dots, and then explain the immune algorithm to prepare nanocomposites for cermet mold materials, use the diversity of antibodies to calculate the concentration and quantity, and calculate its viability. Through regression coefficients, it can be shown that the immune algorithm is used to optimize the component optimization design of Ti(C,N)-based nanocomposite cermet mold materials. The effect is better.

Abstract:In the present study, we successfully synthesized N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) using a top-down approach, i.e., hydroxyl radical opening of fullerene with hydrogen peroxide, in basic ambient using ammonia for two different reaction times. The ensuing characterization via dynamic light scattering, SEM, and IR spectroscopy revealed a size control that was dependent on the reaction time, as well as a more pronounced -NH2 functionalization. The N-CQDs were probed for metal ion detection in aqueous solutions and during bioimaging and displayed a Cr3+ and Cu2+ selectivity shift at a higher degree of -NH2 functionalization, as well as HEK-293 cell nuclei marking.

Abstract:As an excellent fluorescent nanomaterial, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have the properties of small molecular weight, small particle size, high fluorescence stability, no optical flicker, wide excitation spectrum, continuous, long adjustable emission wavelength, good biocompatibility and low toxicity. At present, it has been widely used in biological detection, in vivo and in vitro imaging, drug delivery and diagnostic drugs. This review presents a broad overview of recent progress in synthesis, optical properties, and biomedical applications of CQDs. The synthesis methods of CQDs are first introduced, followed by an extensive discussion of its purification, surface functionalization methods and stability. Furthermore, the optical properties of CQDs are presented, with an emphasis on photoluminescence mechanism and the relationship between synthesis conditions and optical properties. This review's much focus is given to the biomedical applications of CQDs, including detection, imaging (in vivo and in vitro imaging) and drug delivery (targeted therapy, photodynamic and photothermal therapy, and immunological and gene therapy). Finally, we cover the key issues and future prospects/advances that CQDs still have to deal with in the biomedical sector as well as possible solutions.

Abstract:Heavy metal ions are one of the primary causes of environmental pollution. A marshal effect of heavy metal ions is a paramount ultimatum to humans, aquatic animals and other organisms present in nature. Multitude arrays of materials have been proclaimed for sensing of heavy metal ions and also many methodologies are applied for heavy metal ion sensing. Due to their toxicity and non-biodegradability, it is required to be perceived immediately prior to its manifestation of harmful effects. Quantum Dots (QDs) are zero-dimensional nanomaterial particles and owing to their distinctive optical and electronic properties, they are utilized as nanosensors. QDs have enriched fluorescence properties which includes broad excitation spectrum, narrow emission spectrum and photostability. QDs offer eclectic and sensitive detection of heavy metal ions due to presence of discrete capping agents and different functional groups present on the surface of the QDs. These capping layers and functional groups attune the sensing capability of the QDs, which leverages the interactions of QDs with various analytes by different mechanisms. This review, comprising of papers from 2011 to 2020,focuses on heavy metal ions sensing potential of various quantum dots and its applicability as a nanosensor for on field heavy metal ions detection in water.
