Abstract:In the past, the major source of antimicrobial agents came from soil-borne microorganisms.It now appears that an enormous, relatively untapped source of microbial diversity is the microbial endophytes. By definition, these microorganisms (mostly fungi and bacteria) live in the intercellular spaces of plant tissues. Some of these endophytes may produce bioactive (antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, etc. )substances that may be involved in the host-endophyte relationship. As these secondary metabolites may play an important role in nature, they are now attracting more attention to their application in medicine, agriculture and industry. A worldwide scientific effort to isolate endophytes and study their natural products is now underway. This review discussed the recent advances on studying endophytes and their associated bioactive products, to build a better understanding of the importance and value they have to humans.

Abstract:Endophytes, found ubiquitous in all plant species in the world, contribute to their host plants by producing plenty of substances that provide protection and ultimately survival value to the plant. Many researches have proven that endophyte is a new and potential source of novel natural products for exploitation in modern medicine, agriculture and industry. So far, a great number of novel natural products possessing antimicrobial activities have been isolated from endophytes. It is believed that screening for antimicrobial compounds from endophytes is a promising way to overcome the increasing threat of drug resistant strains of human and plant pathogen. Antimicrobial metabolites isolated from endophytes belong to diverse structural classes, including: alkaloids, peptides, steroids, terpenoids, phenols, quinones, and flavonoids. In this review, many well-studied areas are presented and examples will be given to discuss the structure of compounds isolated from endophytes extracts with antimicrobial activities and show the wide variety of approaches taken within the field. These achievements would provide the opportunity to utilize endophytes as a new source for production of antibiotics.

Abstract:Endophytes, microorganisms that reside in the internal tissues of living plants without causing any immediate overt negative effects, have been found in every plant species examined to date and recognized as potential sources of novel natural products for exploitation in medicine, agriculture, and industry with more and more bioactive natural products isolated from the microorganisms. In this review, we focus mainly on bioactive natural products from endophytic microorganisms by their different functional roles. The prospect and facing problems of isolating natural products from endophytes are also discussed.

Abstract:During the last 30 years, plant endophytes deserve more attention around the world although its definition still remains confused and controversy. In this review, major historic events in endophyte researches and their scientific significances were discussed. Scientists firstly focused on special roles of endophytic fungi within woody plants and Gramineae plants. After anticancer natural product taxol was found to be produced by a plant endophytic fungus in 1993, biologically active metabolites were widely screened from plant endophytic microbes in many countries. Though comparing and contrasting the 350 微生物学通报 Microbiol. China 2015, Vol.42, No.2 http://journals.im.ac.cn/wswxtbcn endophytes from different tissues of annual grasses, perennial grasses, woody plants and vine plants, common and specific properties of these endophytes were reviewed. The tendency of researches on endophytes were revealed. Plant endophytes contributed a lot to the total amount of microbe species on the earth. This review pointed that “the real situation of plants in the nature were microbes-plants symbiota”. Therefore, plant breeding were actually improvement of microbes-plants symbiota. Finally, the influences of endophytes on the ecology, biology, microbial evolution, species formation, plant-endophyte co-metabolism, plant protection, animal husbandry, veterinary science, forestry and some other fields were also discussed. Endophyte researches exhibit another view of microbial resources, significant impacts should be observed in many areas. The significance of endophytes not only rely on their niche, the ecological characterics, but also the synergism between endophytes and their hosts, resulting some new functions and new metabolites due to the co-metabolism and interactions.

Abstract:Endophytic fungi and bacteria are the most ubiquitous and representative commensal members that have been studied so far in various higher plants. Within colonization and interaction with their host plants, endophytic microbiota are reportedly to modulate not only the host’s growth but also holobiont resilience to abiotic and biotic stresses, providing a natural reservoir and a promising solution for sustainable agricultural development challenged by global climate change. Moreover, possessing the talent to produce a wide array of high-value natural products, plant endophytic microbiota also serve as an alternative way for novel drug discovery. In this review, tea, one of the world’s three largest nonalcoholic beverages and a worldwide economic woody crop, was highlighted in the context of endophytic microbiota. We explore the recent studies regarding isolation approaches, distribution characteristics and diversity, and also biological functions of endophytic microbiota in Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze. Profoundly, the future insight into interaction mechanism between endophytic microbiota and tea plants will shed light on in-depth exploration of tea microbial resources.

Abstract:Endophytes is a kind of microorganism resource with great potential medicinal value. The interactions between endophytes and host not only promote the growth and development of each other but also drive the biosynthesis of many new medicinal active substances. In this review, we summarized recent reports related to the interactions between endophytes and hosts, mainly regarding the research progress of endophytes affecting the growth and development of host plants, physiological stress and the synthesis of new compounds. Then, we also discussed the positive effects of multiomics analysis on the interactions between endophytes and their hosts, as well as the application and development prospects of metabolites synthesized by symbiotic interactions. This review may provide a reference for the further development and utilization of endophytes and the study of their interactions with their hosts.

Abstract:The plant endophytic fungi plays an important role in ecosystem. Its diversity of secondary metabolites deserved comprehensive attention and made great progress in the world. The paper reviewed the types of metabolites of plant endophytic fungi, including phytohormone, insecticidal, fungicidal, antitumor activities. In particular, some plant endophytic fungus which produce active substances are presented. The endophytic-symbioticmechanism of secondary metabolites of plant endophytic fungi is also analyzed In addition, the review discussed their potential application in research and development of novel drugs.

Abstract:Endophytic fungi, living in the inner tissues of living plants, have attracted increasing attention among ecologists, taxonomists, chemists and agronomists. They are ubiquitously associated with almost all plants studied to date. Numerous studies have indicated that these fungi have an impressive array of biotechnological potential, such as enzyme production, biocontrol agents, plant-growth promoting agents, bioremediation, biodegradation, biotransformation, biosynthesis and nutrient cycling. These fungi may represent an underexplored reservoir of novel biological resources for exploitation in the pharmaceutical, industry and agriculture. This review focuses on new findings in isolation methods, biodiversity, ecological distribution and biotechnological potential.

Abstract:Endophytes are plant inhabiting microorganisms that possess a big and untapped source of natural products with unique chemical structures and biological activities for pharmaceutical and agriculture industry. About, several hundred of endophytes are associated with plants. Metabolites isolated from endophytes with diverse structures belong to alkaloids, steroids, terpenoids, flavonoids, phenols, flavonoids and others. The discovery of an array of therapeutic products has diverted the scientist’s interest from plants to these microorganisms. Hundreds of natural compounds have been obtained and structurally classified while other new active metabolites are under investigation. This present review is an approach to summarize some chemical classes of bioactive compounds obtained from these microorganisms and paving the way for future work.

Abstract:Endophytic fungi, as a kind of fungi living in the healthy plant tissues and organs, are important sources of natural bioactive products and new microbial resources with high developing value. Therefore, exploration and utilization of endophytic fungi can not only alleviate the problems of resource shortage and ecological balance destruction caused by extracting large number of useful bioactive products from natural plants, but also benefit the protection of rare and endangered plant resources, which is of great significance and economic value. This review mainly expounds the concept of endophytic fungi, analyzes the research advances of endophytic fungi from antioxidant, antibacterial, insecticidal, regulating plant growth, anticancer and antitumor bioactivities and, furthermore, summarizes the existing problems in present research of endophytic fungi and corresponding solutions. We hope that this review could provide references for the development and utilization of endophytic fungi and their bioactive metabolites.

Abstract:Endophytes represent a ubiquitous and magical world in plants. Almost all plant species studied by different researchers have been found to harbor one or more endophytes, which protect host plants from pathogen invasion and from adverse environmental conditions. They produce various metabolites that can directly inhibit the growth of pathogens and even promote the growth and development of the host plants. In this review, we focus on the biological control of plant diseases, aiming to elucidate the contribution and key roles of endophytes and their metabolites in this field with the latest research information. Metabolites synthesized by endophytes are part of plant disease management, and the application of endophyte metabolites to induce plant resistance is very promising. Furthermore, multi-omics should be more fully utilized in plant–microbe research, especially in mining novel bioactive metabolites. We believe that the utilization of endophytes and their metabolites for plant disease management is a meaningful and promising research direction that can lead to new breakthroughs in the development of more effective and ecosystem-friendly insecticides and fungicides in modern agriculture.

Abstract:Endophytic fungi (EF) are a group of fascinating host-associated fungal communities that colonize the intercellular or intracellular spaces of host tissues, providing beneficial effects to their hosts while gaining advantages. In recent decades, accumulated research on endophytic fungi has revealed their biodiversity, wide-ranging ecological distribution, and multidimensional interactions with host plants and other microbiomes in the symbiotic continuum. In this review, we highlight the role of secondary metabolites (SMs) as effectors in these multidimensional interactions, and the biosynthesis of SMs in symbiosis via complex gene expression regulation mechanisms in the symbiotic continuum and via the mimicry or alteration of phytochemical production in host plants. Alternative biological applications of SMs in modern medicine, agriculture, and industry and their major classes are also discussed. This review recapitulates an introduction to the research background, progress, and prospects of endophytic biology, and discusses problems and substantive challenges that need further study.

Abstract:The endophytic fungi colonize interior organs of plants, but do not have pathogenic effects on their host(s). They exist in almost all plants and have been recognized as potential sources of novel natural products for exploitation in pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. This review describes about 404 natural products isolated and characterized from over 74 plant-associated fungal strains since 2008, and among them 194 active compounds are elucidated in detail about their structures and biological activities.

Abstract:Endophytes are microorganisms that colonize the interior of host plants without causing apparent disease. They have been widely studied for their ability to modulate relationships between plants and biotic/abiotic stresses, often producing valuable secondary metabolites that can affect host physiology. Owing to the advantages of microbial fermentation over plant/cell cultivation and chemical synthesis, endophytic fungi have received significant attention as a mean for secondary metabolite production. This article summarizes currently reported results on plant-endophyte interaction hypotheses and highlights the biotechnological applications of endophytic fungi and their metabolites in agriculture, environment, biomedicine, energy, and biocatalysts. Current bottlenecks in industrial development and commercial applications as well as possible solutions are also discussed.

Abstract:Endophytes are an endosymbiotic group of microorganisms that colonize in plants and microbes that can be readily isolated from any microbial or plant growth medium. They act as reservoirs of novel bioactive secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, phenolic acids, quinones, steroids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids that serve as a potential candidate for antimicrobial, anti-insect, anticancer and many more properties. While plant sources are being extensively explored for new chemical entities for therapeutic purposes, endophytic microbes also constitute an important source for drug discovery. This review aims to comprehend the contribution and uses of endophytes as an impending source of drugs against various forms of diseases and other possible medicinal use.
