Abstract:1,4-BN-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have emerged as very promising emitters in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) due to their narrowband emission spectra that may find application in high-definition displays. While considerable research has focused on investigating the properties of these materials, less attention has been placed on their synthetic methodology. Here we developed an efficient synthetic method for 1,4-BN-doped PAHs, which enables sustainable production of narrowband organic emitting materials. By strategically introducing substituents, such as methyl, tert-butyl, phenyl, and chloride, at the C5 position of the 1,3-benzenediamine substrates, we achieved remarkable regioselective borylation in the para-position of the substituted moiety. This approach facilitated the synthesis of a diverse range of 1,4-BN-doped PAHs emitters with good yields and exceptional regioselectivity. The synthetic method demonstrated excellent scalability for large-scale production and enabled late-stage transformation of the borylated products. Mechanistic investigations provided valuable insights into the pivotal roles of electron effect and steric hindrance effect in achieving highly efficient regioselective borylation. Moreover, the outstanding device performance of the synthesized compounds 10b and 6z, underscores the practicality and significance of the developed method.

Novel Meso-Polyarylamine-bodipy Hybrids: Synthesis and Study of Their Optical Properties

Abstract:A series of 14 meso-polyarylamine-BODIPY (borondipyrromethene) hybrids of the general structure A were synthesized. Two methods were used to prepare them. The first protocol involved a direct Liebeskind-Srogl cross-coupling of thiomethylbodipys 1-2 with arylaminoboronic acids (4 examples, 75-98%). The second method involves a two-step sequence: a Liebeskind-Srogl reaction to prepare 6 meso-bromoarylbodipys (58-83%) followed by a Suzuki coupling of these Br-containing BODIPYs with arylaminoboronic acids (10 examples, 44-84%). Seven of these derivatives displayed emission in the near-infrared region. The optical properties of compound 18 were rationalized in terms of its crystal structure.

Abstract:Despite the remarkable multiple resonance (MR) optoelectronic properties of organic nanographenes with boron and nitrogen atoms disposed para to each other, the synthetic procedures are sophisticated with low yields and the molecular skeletons are limited. Here, a new paradigm of easy-to-access MR emitter is constructed by simplifying the multiborylation through amine-directed formation of B-N bonds while introducing an additional para-positioned nitrogen atom to trigger the MR effect. The proof-of-concept molecules exhibit narrowband emissions at 480 and 490 nm, with full width at half maxima (FWHMs) of only 29 and 34 nm. The devices based on them showed external quantum efficiencies (EQE) of >33.0 %, which remained above 24.0 % even at a high brightness of 5000 cd m(-2). This is the first example of MR emitters with a B-N covalent bond, not only decreasing the synthesis difficulty but also increasing the diversity of MR skeletons for emerging new optoelectronic properties.

Abstract:A series of BN-embedded PAHs have been synthesized through indole N-directed electrophilic borylation reactions. When BCl3 was used as the boron source, the borylation reaction produced two new BN-PAHs monomers. When BBr3 was used as boron source, borylation and CC coupling reactions finally produced two novel dimers of BN-PAHs. The fully spectral characterization and single crystal X-ray diffraction unambiguously confirmed the features of B-N bonds and dimerization. DFT calculations and experimental spectra demonstrate that dimers are more conjugated and have higher quantum yields than monomers.

Abstract:The borylation of aryl substituted pyridines is an effective way of preparing B-N doped conjugated organic frameworks. Trihaloborane Lewis acids are often employed for this protocol, and may require further functionalization to replace the remaining halides on boron. We report a new, fully characterized, electrophilic borylating agent, (C6F5)2B(2-NTf2), that smoothly incorporates a -B(C6F5)2 unit into the model substrate 2-phenylpyridine. To demonstrate its utility in preparing more complex B-N doped structures, we use it to prepare seven examples of the 6a,13a-diaza-7,14-dibora-dibenzo[a,h]pyrene framework, with substituents of varying donor properties. The structural, redox and photophysical properties of this new family of B-N doped polycyclic hydrocarbon compounds were probed experimentally and computationally.

Abstract:Herein, we simultaneously synthesized three different double B←N Lewis pair‐functionalized naphthalenes including the asymmetric BNNY and BNNO and the mirror‐symmetric BNNR, via a one‐pot method. The annulation modes of the B←N Lewis pairs and the substituents on the boron atoms efficiently tune the molecular frontier orbitals and emission colors. α‐Position fusion leads to a significant enhancement of the HOMO energy level and a decrease in the HOMO‐LUMO gap, while the electron‐withdrawing groups attached to the boron atom make the LUMO energy level more stable. In particular, the LUMO energy level of BNNO is as low as ‐3.12 eV. BNNY, BNNO, and BNNR emit cyan, green, and red fluorescence at 509, 534, and 620 nm, respectively, with fluorescence quantum yields of 24%, 49%, and 30%, respectively.

Abstract:Boron/nitrogen (B/N)-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with the multiple resonance (MR) effect are promising for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) because of their narrowband emission and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) characteristics. Nevertheless, exploring the variety of such emitters is challenging because of the tricky and limited synthetic protocols. Herein, we designed a novel B/N-doped PAH, L-DABNA-1, whose backbone (L-DABNA) could not be achieved via conventional routes (e.g., one-pot borylation or one-shot borylation). We successfully synthesized it through stepwise one-shot borylations with precisely introducing decorations. The unique MR backbone with intersecting DABNA substructures sharing an aniline group, avoiding any para-N-π-B motif, allows L-DABNA-1 to maintain narrowband TADF emission while significantly redshifting to the yellow–green region with a reverse intersystem crossing rate (kRISC) of 1.28 × 105 s−1. An L-DABNA-1-based OLED device achieved a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of over 40% and maintained a high EQE of 36.3% at 1000 cd m−2, with a current efficiency reaching ~170 cd A−1. This work not only demonstrated the great potential of stepwise borylations in synthesizing B/N-doped PAH backbones, expanding their chemical space, but also provided a promising pathway for exploring MR-TADF emitters at longer wavelengths.

Abstract:Conjugated organoboranes with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) have emerged as a promising kind of organic emitting materials. In this study, we report the design of organoborane TADF emitters using double B←N bridged bipyridine (BNBP) as an electron-accepting unit. A series of novel BNBP-containing D‒A‒D-type organoboranes were facilely synthesized via the Buchwald–Hartwig amination and then borylation reactions. Their single-crystal and electronic structures, as well as photophysical and electrochemical properties were fully investigated. Notably, by varying the electron donor groups from diphenylamine and carbazole to 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine, the slight overlapping between highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and small singlet-triplet energy gaps of organoborane molecule were obtained, thus leading to the intriguing TADF property. Moreover, the aggregation-induced emission characteristic was unexpected demonstrated for this organoborane molecule.

Abstract:We observed a surprisingly high electronically‐driven regioselectivity for the iridium‐catalyzed C–H borylation of donor‐π‐acceptor (D‐π‐A) systems with diphenylamino ( 1 ) or carbazolyl ( 2 ) moieties as the donor, bis(2,6‐bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)boryl ( B( F Xyl) 2 ) as the acceptor, and 1,4‐phenylene as the π‐bridge. Under our conditions, borylation was observed only at the sterically least encumbered para‐positions of the acceptor group. As boronate esters are versatile building blocks for organic synthesis (C–C coupling, functional group transformations) the C‐H borylation represents a simple potential method for post‐functionalization by which electronic or other properties of D‐π‐A systems can be fine‐tuned for specific applications. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of the borylated ( 1‐(Bpin) 2 ) and unborylated ( 1 ) diphenylamino‐substituted D‐π‐A systems were investigated. Interestingly, the borylated derivative exhibits coordination of THF to the boronate ester moieties, influencing the photophysical properties and exemplifying the non‐innocence of boronate esters.
Photoinduced Site-Selective Aryl C-H Borylation with Electron-Donor-Acceptor Complex Derived from B2Pin2 and Isoquinoline

Abstract:Due to boron's metalloid properties, aromatic boron reagents are prevalent synthetic intermediates. The direct borylation of aryl C-H bonds for producing aromatic boron compounds offers an appealing, one-step solution. Despite significant advances in this field, achieving regioselective aryl C-H bond borylation using simple and readily available starting materials still remains a challenge. In this work, we attempted to enhance the reactivity of the electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) complex by selecting different bases to replace the organic base (NEt3) used in our previous research. To our delight, when using NH4HCO3 as the base, we have achieved a mild visible-light-mediated aromatic C-H bond borylation reaction with exceptional regioselectivity (rr > 40:1 to single isomers). Compared with our previous borylation methodologies, this protocol provides a more efficient and broader scope for aryl C-H bond borylation through the use of N-Bromosuccinimide. The protocol's good functional-group tolerance and excellent regioselectivity enable the functionalization of a variety of biologically relevant compounds and novel cascade transformations. Mechanistic experiments and theoretical calculations conducted in this study have indicated that, for certain arenes, the aryl C-H bond borylation might proceed through a new reaction mechanism, which involves the formation of a novel transient EDA complex.

Abstract:Efficient organic emitters in the deep-red to near infrared region are rare due to the ‘energy gap law’. Here, multiple boron (B)- and nitrogen (N)-atoms embedded polycyclic heteroaromatics featuring hybridized π -bonding/ non-bonding molecular orbitals are constructed, providing a way to overcome the above luminescent boundary. The introduction of B-phenyl-B and N-phenyl-N structures enhances the electronic coupling of those para-positioned atoms, forming restricted π -bonds on the phenyl-core for delocalized excited states and thus a narrow energy gap. The mutually ortho-positioned B- and N-atoms also induce a multiple resonance effect on the peripheral skeleton for the non-bonding orbitals, creating shallow potential energy surfaces to eliminate the high-frequency vibrational quenching. The corresponding deep-red emitters with peaks at 662 nm and 692 nm exhibit narrow full-width at half-maximums of 38 nm, high radiative decay rates of ~10 8 s -1 , ~100% photo-luminance quantum yields and record-high maximum external quantum efficiencies of >28% in a normal planar organic light-emitting diode structure, simultaneously.

Abstract:<p>A novel three-dimensional tetracoordinated organoboron acceptor bearing CˆNˆC chelate was developed by the direct borylation of pyridine derivatives. Donor-acceptor type emitter based on this novel organoboron acceptor exhibited good stability, high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) character. By selecting different donors with different electron donating abilities, two distinct electroluminescence devices with white and green emission achieved maximum external quantum efficiency of over 10%.</p>

Abstract:Reaction of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-borenium ion with 9,10-distyrylanthracene forms four B-C bonds through two selective, tandem hydroboration-electrophilic C-H borylations to yield an isolable, crystallographically characterizable polycyclic diborenium ion as its [NTf2 ]- salt (1). Dehydrogenation of 1 with TEMPO radical followed by acidic workup yields a 3,9-diboraperylene as its corresponding borinic acid (2). This sequence can be performed in one pot to allow the facile, metal-free conversion of an alkene into a small molecule containing a boron-doped graphene substructure. Doubly boron-doped perylene 2 exhibits visible range absorbance and fluorescence in chloroform solution (Φ=0.63) and undergoes two reversible one-electron reductions at moderate potentials of -1.30 and -1.64 eV vs. ferrocenium/ferrocene in DMSO. Despite sterically accessible boron centers and facile electrochemical reductions, compound 2 is air-, moisture-, and silica gel-stable.

Abstract:NBN‐ and BNB‐doped phenalenyls are isoelectronic to phenalenyl anions and cations, respectively. They represent a pair of complementary molecules that have essentially identical structures but opposite properties as electron donors and acceptors. The NBN‐phenalenyls 1−4 considered here were prepared from N,N'‐dimethyl‐1,8‐diaminonaphthalene and readily available boron‐containing building blocks (i.e., BH3∙SMe2 (1), p‐CF3‐C6H4B(OH)2 (2), C6H5B(OH)2 (3), or MesBCl2/iPr2NEt (4)). Treatment of 1 with 4‐Me2N‐2,6‐Me2‐C6H2Li gave the corresponding NBN derivative 5. The BNB‐phenalenyl 6 was synthesized from 1,8‐naphthalenediyl‐bridged diborane(6), PhNH2, and MesMgBr. A computational study reveals that the photoemission of 1, 4, and 5 originates from locally excited (LE) states at the NBN‐phenalenyl fragments, while that of 2 is dominated by charge transfer (CT) from the NBN‐phenalenyl to the p‐CF3‐C6H4 fragment. Depending on the dihedral angle θ between its Ph and NBN planes, compound 3 emits mainly from a less polar LE (θ > 55°) or more polar CT state (θ < 55°). In turn, the energetic preference for either state is governed by the polarity of the solvent used. An equimolar aggregate of the NBN‐ and BNB‐phenalenyls 3 and 6 (in THF/H2O) shows a distinct red‐shifted emission compared to that of the individual components, which originates from an intermolecular CT state.

Abstract:Boron (B), nitrogen (N) -based polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been demonstrated as a promising strategy for building efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) emitters in bule and green region, while red emission materials based on B,N systems are rare. Hence, to achieve a red-shift emission peak over 600 nm by simply modifying the core of B,N-PAHs is a rewarding and challenging project. In this work, we demonstrate that the para-D-π-B strategy implementation of modulating predominance of locally excited (LE)/charger transfer (CT) state by introducing peripheral electron-donating units in a boron-carbazole contained backbone (BNCz) to develop four TADF emitters, BN-TC, BN-AC, BN-PXZ and BN-PZ. Due to the effect of different donor strengths on the excited states of these materials, we obtain full-color emission and high photoluminescence quantum yield (ΦPL) of nearly 100%. Notably, the device employing BN-PZ as dopant exhibits orange-red emission with an electroluminescence (EL) peak at 612 nm. Meanwhile, this compound realizes very fast reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) with a rate constant (kRISC) of 1.8×106 s−1, resulting in the device with high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 25.0% and low efficiency roll-off at high brightness.

Abstract:A series of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), consisting of two pairs of BN units, have been designed and their synthesis has been achieved by electrophilic C-H borylation. Two conjugation extension directions can be found in these B2N2-embedded PAHs. The B2N2-containing backbone with shorter effective conjugation length is isoelectronic with diaryl-fused anthracene, whereas the second derivative, with longer effective conjugation length, is isoelectronic with bis(trans-arylvinyl)benzene. By incorporating different aryl groups, i.e., furyl, thienyl, benzo[b]furyl, and benzo[b]thienyl groups, into the two crossed directions of the B2N2-embedded PAHs, their electronic and optical properties have been comparatively investigated by photophysical, electrochemical, and theoretical approaches. It is found that both the substituents and their conjugation extension directions have significant effects on the aromatic and photophysical properties of the B2N2-embedded PAHs. The conjugation extension in the shorter backbone is more pronounced on the effective conjugation length than the longer backbone. Moreover, all the B2N2-embedded PAHs behave as both Lewis acids and Lewis bases, and reversible photoluminescence switching can be observed by simply neutralizing the added Lewis acid or Lewis base.

Abstract:An air-stable B(3),N(2)-PAH (B(3)N(2); nine annulated six-membered rings) was synthesized from 1-X-2,6-di(azasilaanthryl)benzenes (X = Cl, I) via lithiation/borylation, electrophilic aromatic borylation, and Si/B exchange.
