Abstract:After the discovery of graphene in 2004, the field of atomically thin crystals has exploded with the discovery of thousands of 2-dimensional materials (2DMs) with unique electronic and optical properties, by making them very attractive for a broad range of applications, from electronics to energy storage and harvesting, and from sensing to biomedical applications. In order to integrate 2DMs into practical applications, it is crucial to develop mass scalable techniques providing crystals of high quality and in large yield. Electrochemical exfoliation is one of the most promising methods for producing 2DMs, as it enables quick and large-scale production of solution processable nanosheets with a thickness well below 10 layers and lateral size above 1 μm. Originally, this technique was developed for the production of graphene; however, in the last few years, this approach has been successfully extended to other 2DMs, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorous, hexagonal boron nitride, MXenes and many other emerging 2D materials. This review first provides an introduction to the fundamentals of electrochemical exfoliation and then it discusses the production of each class of 2DMs, by introducing their properties and giving examples of applications. Finally, a summary and perspective are given to address some of the challenges in this research area.

Abstract:The intercalation-based exfoliation of layered materials is a broadly applicable strategy for the scalable production of atomically thin (from mono- to few-layer) sheets, including graphene, black phosphorus, hexagonal boron nitride and transition metal dichalcogenides. This strategy typically involves the intercalation of foreign species (ions or small molecules) into the interlayer spaces of layered materials, followed by a mild exfoliation process (spontaneously or via bath sonication, stirring or manual shaking). In this Review we introduce several intercalation-based exfoliation methods and highlight the factors that influence the quality of exfoliated nanosheets. In addition, we introduce the phase-transition phenomena involved in intercalation-based exfoliation, which may induce the resultant nanosheets to differ electronically and structurally from their bulk counterparts. Finally, we discuss potential commercial applications, focusing on devices (such as various electronic, photonic, photoelectric and energy devices) and catalysis (including photocatalysis and electrocatalysis).

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials demonstrate their exquisite properties such as high temperature superconductivity, superlubricity, charge density wave, piezotronics, flextronics, straintronics, spintronics, valleytronics, and optoelectronics, mostly, at the monolayer limit. Following initial breakthroughs based on micromechanically exfoliated 2D monolayers, significant progress has been made in recent years toward the bottom-up synthesis of large-area monolayer 2D materials such as MoS<sub>2</sub> and WS<sub>2</sub> using physical vapor deposition and chemical vapor deposition techniques in order to facilitate their transition into commercial technologies. However, the nucleation and subsequent growth of the secondary, tertiary, and greater numbers of vertical layers poses a significant challenge not only toward the realization of uniform monolayers but also toward maintaining their consistent electronic and optoelectronic properties which change abruptly when transitioning from the monolayer to multilayer form. Chemical or physical techniques which can remove the unwanted top layers without compromising the material quality will have tremendous consequences toward the development of atomically flat, large-area, uniform monolayers of 2D materials. Here, we report a simple, elegant, and self-limiting electrochemical polishing technique that can thin down any arbitrary thickness of 2D material, irrespective of whether these are obtained using powder vapor transport or mechanical exfoliation, into their corresponding monolayer form at room temperature within a few seconds without compromising their atomistic integrity. The effectiveness of this electrochemical polishing technique is inherent to 2D transition-metal dichalcogenides owing to the stability of their basal planes, enhanced edge reactivity, and stronger than van der Waals interaction with the substrate. Our study also reveals that 2D monolayers are chemically more robust and corrosion resistant compared to their bulk counterparts in similar oxidative environments, which enables electrochemical polishing of such materials down to a monolayer.

Abstract:Electrochemical exfoliation serves as a promising and convenient method for the large‐scale production of uniform 2D nanosheets. This review systematically presents the recent developments in electrochemical delamination, including the protocols, categories, principles, operating conditions, and the applications in synthesizing prevailing 2D materials for energy storage and conversion. Future research directions for electrochemical delamination are also proposed. 2D materials have captured much recent research interest in a broad range of areas, including electronics, biology, sensors, energy storage, and others. In particular, preparing 2D nanosheets with high quality and high yield is crucial for the important applications in energy storage and conversion. Compared with other prevailing synthetic strategies, the electrochemical exfoliation of layered starting materials is regarded as one of the most promising and convenient methods for the large‐scale production of uniform 2D nanosheets. Here, recent developments in electrochemical delamination are reviewed, including protocols, categories, principles, and operating conditions. State‐of‐the‐art methods for obtaining 2D materials with small numbers of layers—including graphene, black phosphorene, transition metal dichalcogenides and MXene—are also summarized and discussed in detail. The applications of electrochemically exfoliated 2D materials in energy storage and conversion are systematically reviewed. Drawing upon current progress, perspectives on emerging trends, existing challenges, and future research directions of electrochemical delamination are also offered.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides have been identified and drawn much attention over the last few years for their unique structural and electronic properties. However, their rise begins only after these materials are successfully isolated from their layered assemblies or adhesive substrates into individual monolayers. Mechanical exfoliation and transfer are the most successful techniques to obtain high-quality single- or few-layer nanocrystals from their native multi-layer structures or their substrate for growth, which involves interfacial peeling and intralayer tearing processes that are controlled by material properties, geometry and the kinetics of exfoliation. This procedure is rationalized in this work through theoretical analysis and atomistic simulations. We propose a criterion to assess the feasibility for the exfoliation of two-dimensional sheets from an adhesive substrate without fracturing itself, and explore the effects of material and interface properties, as well as the geometrical, kinetic factors on the peeling behaviors and the torn morphology. This multi-scale approach elucidates the microscopic mechanism of the mechanical processes, offering predictive models and tools for the design of experimental procedures to obtain single- or few-layer two-dimensional materials and structures.

Abstract:Controlled large-quantity synthesis of two-dimensional materials is vital for the research on their physical and chemical characters and potential applications. Utilizing structural features of layered compounds, intercalation of molecules or ions can be applied to the acceleration of liquid-phase exfoliation. In this review, we aim at recent progress on synthesis of two-dimensional materials via intercalation-assisted exfoliation strategy. Works on wet chemical intercalation and electrochemical intercalation, together with product exfoliation afterwards, are summarized. Furthermore, the features and advantages of intercalation-assisted exfoliation strategy for two-dimensional materials synthesis are discussed.

Abstract:Due to the strong in-plane but weak out-of-plane bonding, it is relatively easy to separate nanosheets of two-dimensional (2D) materials from their respective bulk crystals. This exfoliation of 2D materials can yield large 2D nanosheets, hundreds of micrometers wide, that can be as thin as one or a few atomic layers thick. However, the underlying physical mechanisms unique to each exfoliation technique can produce a wide distribution of defects, yields, functionalization, lateral sizes, and thicknesses, which can be appropriate for specific end applications. The five most commonly used exfoliation techniques include micromechanical cleavage, ultrasonication, shear exfoliation, ball milling, and electrochemical exfoliation. In this review, we present an overview of the field of 2D material exfoliation and the underlying physical mechanisms with emphasis on progress over the last decade. The beneficial characteristics and shortcomings of each exfoliation process are discussed in the context of their functional properties to guide the selection of the best technique for a given application. Furthermore, an analysis of standard applications of exfoliated 2D nanosheets is presented including their use in energy storage, electronics, lubrication, composite, and structural applications. By providing detailed insight into the underlying exfoliation mechanisms along with the advantages and disadvantages of each technique, this review intends to guide the reader toward the appropriate batch-scale exfoliation techniques for a wide variety of industrial applications.

Abstract:Since the discovery of mechanically exfoliated graphene in 2004, research on ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials has grown exponentially in the fields of condensed matter physics, material science, chemistry, and nanotechnology. Highlighting their compelling physical, chemical, electronic, and optical properties, as well as their various potential applications, in this Review, we summarize the state-of-art progress on the ultrathin 2D nanomaterials with a particular emphasis on their recent advances. First, we introduce the unique advances on ultrathin 2D nanomaterials, followed by the description of their composition and crystal structures. The assortments of their synthetic methods are then summarized, including insights on their advantages and limitations, alongside some recommendations on suitable characterization techniques. We also discuss in detail the utilization of these ultrathin 2D nanomaterials for wide ranges of potential applications among the electronics/optoelectronics, electrocatalysis, batteries, supercapacitors, solar cells, photo catalysis, and sensing platforms. Finally, the challenges and outlooks in this promising field are featured on the basis of its current development.

Abstract:Abstract Two-dimensional materials provide extraordinary opportunities for exploring phenomena arising in atomically thin crystals. Beginning with the first isolation of graphene, mechanical exfoliation has been a key to provide high-quality two-dimensional materials, but despite improvements it is still limited in yield, lateral size and contamination. Here we introduce a contamination-free, one-step and universal Au-assisted mechanical exfoliation method and demonstrate its effectiveness by isolating 40 types of single-crystalline monolayers, including elemental two-dimensional crystals, metal-dichalcogenides, magnets and superconductors. Most of them are of millimeter-size and high-quality, as shown by transfer-free measurements of electron microscopy, photo spectroscopies and electrical transport. Large suspended two-dimensional crystals and heterojunctions were also prepared with high-yield. Enhanced adhesion between the crystals and the substrates enables such efficient exfoliation, for which we identify a gold-assisted exfoliation method that underpins a universal route for producing large-area monolayers and thus supports studies of fundamental properties and potential application of two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:Electrochemical molecular intercalation of layered semiconducting crystals with organic cations followed by ultrasonic exfoliation has proven to be an effective approach to producing a rich family of organic/inorganic hybrid superlattices and high-quality, solution-processable 2D semiconductors. A traditional method for exfoliating 2D crystals relies on the intercalation of inorganic alkali metal cations. The organic cations (e.g., alkyl chain–substituted quaternary ammonium cations) are much larger than their inorganic counterparts, and the bulky molecular structure endows distinct intercalation and exfoliation chemistry, as well as molecular tunability. By using this protocol, many layered 2D crystals (including graphene, black phosphorus and versatile metal chalcogenides) can be electrochemically intercalated with organic quaternary alkylammonium cations. Subsequent solution-phase exfoliation of the intercalated compounds is realized by regular bath sonication for a short period (5–30 min) to produce free-standing, thin 2D nanosheets. It is also possible to graft additional ligands on the nanosheet surface. The thickness of the exfoliated nanosheets can be measured by using atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Modifying the chemical structure and geometrical configuration of alkylammonium cations results in different exfoliation behavior and a family of versatile organic/inorganic hybrid superlattices with tunable physical/chemical properties. The whole protocol takes ~6 h for the successful production of stable, ultrathin 2D nanosheet dispersion in solution and another 11 h for depositing thin films and transferring them onto an arbitrary surface. This protocol does not require expertise beyond basic electrochemistry knowledge and conventional colloidal nanocrystal synthesis and processing.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials and their heterostructures have been intensively studied in recent years due to their potential applications in electronic, optoelectronic, and spintronic devices. Nonetheless, the realization of 2D heterostructures with atomically flat and clean interfaces remains challenging, especially for air-sensitive materials, which hinders the in-depth investigation of interface-induced phenomena and the fabrication of high-quality devices. Here, we circumvented this challenge by exfoliating 2D materials in an ultrahigh vacuum. Remarkably, ultraflat and clean substrate surfaces can assist the exfoliation of 2D materials, regardless of the substrate and 2D material, thus providing a universal method for the preparation of heterostructures with ideal interfaces. In addition, we studied the properties of two prototypical systems that cannot be achieved previously, including the electronic structure of monolayer phospherene and optical responses of transition metal dichalcogenides on different metal substrates. Our work paves the way to engineer rich interface-induced phenomena, such as proximity effects and moiré superlattices.

Abstract:2D materials provide a rich platform to study novel physical phenomena arising from quantum confinement. This article presents a simple and generic method of kinetic in situ single‐layer synthesis, which enables the exfoliation of sub‐millimeter flakes of air‐sensitive 2D materials directly in vacuum. The method does not require the usage of a glovebox or other specialized equipment, making it well‐suited for surface science techniques. 2D materials provide a rich platform to study novel physical phenomena arising from quantum confinement of charge carriers. Many of these phenomena are discovered by surface sensitive techniques, such as photoemission spectroscopy, that work in ultra‐high vacuum (UHV). Success in experimental studies of 2D materials, however, inherently relies on producing adsorbate‐free, large‐area, high‐quality samples. The method that yields 2D materials of highest quality is mechanical exfoliation from bulk‐grown samples. However, as this technique is traditionally performed in a dedicated environment, the transfer of samples into vacuum requires surface cleaning that might diminish the quality of the samples. In this article, a simple method for in situ exfoliation directly in UHV is reported, which yields large‐area, single‐layered films. Multiple metallic and semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides are exfoliated in situ onto Au, Ag, and Ge. The exfoliated flakes are found to be of sub‐millimeter size with excellent crystallinity and purity, as supported by angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and low‐energy electron diffraction. The approach is well‐suited for air‐sensitive 2D materials, enabling the study of a new suite of electronic properties. In addition, the exfoliation of surface alloys and the possibility of controlling the substrate‐2D material twist angle is demonstrated.

Abstract:Extensive research on two-dimensional (2D) materials has triggered the renaissance of an old topic, that is, the intercalation and exfoliation of layer materials. Such top-down exfoliation produced 2D materials and their dispersions have several advantages including low cost, scalable production capability, solution processability, and versatile functionalities stemming from the large number of species of layer materials, and show promising potential in many applications. In recent years, many new methods have been developed for exfoliating layer materials to 2D materials for different application purposes. In this review the different exfoliation approaches are first systematically analyzed from the viewpoint of methodology, and the advantages and disadvantages of each method are compared. Second, the assembly of exfoliated 2D materials into macrostructures by solution-based techniques is summarized. Third, the state-of-the-art applications of 2D material dispersions and their assemblies in electronics and optoelectronics, electrocatalysis, energy storage, etc., are discussed. Finally, insights and perspectives on current research challenges and future opportunities regarding the exfoliation and applications of 2D materials in dispersions are considered.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted extensive attraction due to their unique properties in novel physical phenomena, such as superconductors, Moiré superlattices, ferromagnetics, Weyl semimetals, which all requires the high quality of 2D TMDs. Mechanical exfoliation (ME) as a top-down strategy shows great potential to obtain 2D TMDs with high quality and large scale. This paper reviews the theoretical and experimental details of this method. Subsequently, diverse modified ME methods are introduced. Significantly, the recent progress of Au assisted ME method is the highlight. Finally, this review will point out a rational direction for the exfoliation of TMDs with high qualities and large sizes.

Abstract:The exfoliation of layered crystals can produce diverse two-dimensional (2D) materials and heterostructures. However, the micromechanical cleavage of non-stratified materials into 2D flakes remains challenging due to z -direction consecutive bonding. Here we report a mechanical exfoliation method for producing freestanding 2D metal oxide flakes. By synchronizing the thermal decomposition of metal salts and water-assisted forming, we synthesize large-aspect-ratio lamellae of amorphous and crystalline metal oxides as parent materials, which can exfoliate to ultrathin flakes. The freestanding, transferrable features allow the room temperature integration of high- k metal oxide flakes as top-gate dielectrics in 2D material transistors. We utilize the dual-function Cr-doped AlO x flake as the gating dielectric and component, sensing and storing the visible light by photon-programming floating gate effect, showing an in-sensor computing device. Our results provide a platform to investigate the fundamental properties of ultrathin metal oxides free of substrate clamping and pave the way to metal oxides-based functional devices.

Abstract:Abstract The use of two-dimensional materials in bulk functional applications requires the ability to fabricate defect-free 2D sheets with large aspect ratios. Despite huge research efforts, current bulk exfoliation methods require a compromise between the quality of the final flakes and their lateral size, restricting the effectiveness of the product. In this work, we describe an intercalation-assisted exfoliation route, which allows the production of high-quality graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, and molybdenum disulfide 2D sheets with average aspect ratios 30 times larger than that obtained via conventional liquid-phase exfoliation. The combination of chlorosulfuric acid intercalation with in situ pyrene sulfonate functionalisation produces a suspension of thin large-area flakes, which are stable in various polar solvents. The described method is simple and requires no special laboratory conditions. We demonstrate that these suspensions can be used for fabrication of laminates and coatings with electrical properties suitable for a number of real-life applications.

Abstract:Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit broad application prospects in many fields due to the enhanced specific surface area to volume ratio and quantum confinement effect. Because of the atomic thickness and various orientations, ultrathin 2D materials exposing specific facets have drawn great attention for various applications in catalysis, batteries, optoelectronics, magnetism, epitaxial template for material growth, etc. Though maintaining the atomic thickness of 2D materials while controlling crystal facets is an enormous challenge, breakthroughs are being made. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in the facet engineering of 2D materials, ranging from a basic understanding of facets and the corresponding approaches and the significance of facet engineering. We also propose current challenges and forecast future development directions including the establishment of a facet database, the fabrication of new 2D materials, the design of specific substrates, and the introduction of theoretical calculations and in situ characterization techniques. This review can guide researchers to design ultrathin 2D materials with unique and distinct facets and provide an insight into the applications of energy, magnetism, optics, biomedicine, and other fields.

Abstract:In recent years, electrochemical exfoliation of layered materials has attracted increasing attention owing to its wide feasibility in the fast and high-yield preparation of various two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials. This process typically involves the use of an electric field to drive the intercalation of counter ions into the layered structure. The regulation of the interlayer chemistry plays a crucial rule in electrochemical exfoliation, yet it is often overlooked in existing review articles. To fill this gap, we present a summary of the most recent progress made in understanding the role of interlayer chemistry regulation in electrochemical, with a particular emphasis on the impact of redox reactions that lead to the electrochemical degradation of electrolytes and solvents, as well as the covalent modification necessary for creating 2D functional derivatives. The opportunities and challenges in this field are provided in the end, with a focus on the critical roles played by the electrochemical kinetics and interface observation in the development of large-scale industrial methods. These factors are pivotal for the continued progress and advancement of prospective techniques in this area.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) metal nanomaterials have gained ever-growing research interest owing to their fascinating physicochemical properties and promising application, especially in the field of electrocatalysis. In this review, we briefly introduce the recent advances in wet-chemical synthesis of 2D metal nanomaterials. Subsequently, the catalytic performances of 2D metal nanomaterials in a variety of electrochemical reactions are illustrated. Finally, we summarize current challenges and highlight our perspectives on preparing high-performance 2D metal electrocatalysts.
