Abstract:Municipal wastewater treatment that mainly performed by conventional activated sludge (CAS) process faces the challenge of intensive aeration-associated energy consumption for oxidation of organics and ammonium, contributing to significant directly/indirectly greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from energy use, which hinders the achievement of carbon neutral, the top priority mission in the coming decades to cope with the global climate change. Therefore, this article aimed to offer a comprehensive analysis of recently developed biological treatment processes with the focus on reducing discharge and CO2 footprint. The biotechnologies including "Zero Carbon", "Low Carbon", "Carbon Capture and Utilization" are discussed, it suggested that, by integrating these processes with energy-saving and carbon recovery, the challenges faced in current wastewater treatment plants can be overcome, and a carbon-neutral even be possible. Future research should investigate the integration of these methods and improve anammox contribution as well as minimize organics lost under different scales.

Abstract:Carbon-neutral pathways for China's wastewater sector is of great significance, but technical carbon reduction pathways for single wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) are not yet clear. This study develops a framework to design technology-driven carbon-neutral pathways at plant-level up to 2050 through four steps. Results shows that the average greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity was assessed at about 0.29 kgCO2eq/m3 from 2011 to 2021. Techno-economic analyses of various low-carbon technologies reveal Sharon-anammox as an effective option for carbon reduction. Additionally, the sensitivity of GHG reduction potential to changes in electricity emission factors highlights the importance of the power sector's clean energy transition. Scenario simulations suggest that approximately 39% of the carbon-neutral target by 2050 will require technological advancements, achievable with a 0.37 $/kgCO2eq investment. This study presents an analysis of the carbon-neutral pathways for a single WWTP system, providing insights into sustainable wastewater treatment practices.

Abstract:paradigm shift is underway in wastewater treatment as the industry heads toward ~3% of global electricity consumption and contributes ~1.6% of greenhouse gas emissions. Although incremental improvements to energy efficiency and renewable energy recovery are underway, studies considering wastewater for carbon capture and utilization are few. This Review summarizes alternative wastewater treatment pathways capable of simultaneous CO 2 capture and utilization, and demonstrates the environmental and economic benefits of microbial electrochemical and phototrophic processes. Preliminary estimates demonstrate that re-envisioning wastewater treatment may entirely offset the industry’s greenhouse gas footprint and make it a globally significant contributor of negative carbon emissions.

Abstract:With the unprecedented exhaustion of natural phosphorus (P) resource and the high eutrophication potential of the associated-P discharge, P recovery from the domestic wastewater is a promising way and has been putting on agenda of wastewater industry . To address the concern of P resource recovery in an environmentally sustainable way is indispensable especially in the carbon neutrality-oriented wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Therefore, this review aims to offer a critical view and a holistic analysis of different P removal/recovery process in current WWTPs and more P reclaim options with the focus on the energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission. Unlike P mostly flowing out in the planned/semi-planned P removal/recovery process in current WWTPs, P could be maximumly sequestered via the A-2B- centered process, direct reuse of P-bearing permeate from anaerobic membrane bioreactor , nano-adsorption combined with anaerobic membrane and electrochemical P recovery process. The A-2B- centered process, in which the anaerobic fixed bed reactor was designated for COD capture for energy efficiency while P was enriched and recovered with further P crystallization treating, exhibited the lowest specific energy consumption and GHG emission on the basis of P mass recovered. P resource management in WWTPs tends to incorporate issues related to environmental protection, energy efficiency, GHG emission and socio-economic benefits. This review offers a holistic view with regard to the paradigm shift from "simple P removal" to "P reuse/recovery" and offers in-depth insights into the possible directions towards the P-recovery in the "water-energy-resource-GHG nexus" plant.

Abstract:Recently, every industry has been working to achieve carbon neutrality, and the wastewater sector is no exception. However, little research focuses on the carbon accounting of wastewater treatment and the roadmap to carbon neutrality. Here, to systematically perform accounting, we provide a sketch that describes three boundaries of the wastewater system and propose that the carbon neutrality of the wastewater system is far beyond the plant boundary. Moreover, we identify the direct and indirect carbon emissions of wastewater treatment. In addition to direct emissions of CH4 and N2O, direct fossil CO2 emissions from wastewater treatment should be included in accounting to set accurate guidelines. Next, the technologies that assist in achieving carbon-neutral wastewater treatment both within-the-fence of wastewater treatment plants and beyond the plant boundary are summarized. All measurements of energy recovery, resource recovery, and water reuse contribute to reaching this goal. The concepts of energy neutrality and carbon neutrality are identified. Successful wastewater treatment cases in energy self-sufficiency may not achieve carbon neutrality. Meanwhile, resource recovery methods are encouraged, especially to produce carbon-based materials. Ultimately, the trend of preference for the decentralized sewage treatment system is pinpointed, and systematic thinking to set the urban infrastructure layout as a whole is advocated.

Abstract:With the rising concern of global recognition and consensus of carbon neutrality under the circumstance of global warming and the shortage of both water resource and energy, the wastewater treatment processes should also be conformed to the energy conservation and carbon reduction. This study systematically reviewed and investigated the significance and superiorities of the current and future state-of-the-art anaerobic biotechnologies for the potential in carbon-neutral treatment processes of wastewater. Since the current wastewater treatment processes are energy-intensive and with high carbon emission, a carbon-neutral biotechnology should be capable of realizing the feasibility in the recovery of bioenergy and bioresource, and the reduction of CO 2 emission during the treatment process. State-of-the-art anaerobic biotechnologies which are conformed with the carbon neutrality are specifically introduced and recommended for the effective and sustainable treatment of high-strength and low-strength wastewater. Difficulties and obstacles of anaerobic biotechnologies and corresponding enhancement strategies were also discussed in order to improve the treatment performance and the production of bioenergy and bioresource from organic and inorganic pollutants contained in wastewater, and also to achieve a net-zero carbon emission. This study suggests feasible insights into the future directions of biological wastewater treatment including anaerobic digestion, autotrophic denitrification and anaerobic ammonium oxidation, also provides a new outlook towards the development of anaerobic biotechnologies for sustainable and low-carbon wastewater treatment. This study also helps to popularize the concept of carbon neutrality in the research area of wastewater treatment with energy conservation and emission reduction.

Abstract:In the context of climate policies that advocate carbon neutrality, carbon emission reduction provides a new restriction in evaluating the waste activated sludge (WAS) treatment technologies and procedures. This review provides an overview of current researches and development efforts in WAS treatment, focusing on the dual attributes of WAS as contaminants and resources. Firstly, the improved technical requirements posed by heavy metals, micro(nano) plastics, or other emerging plastics in WAS are studied. Furthermore, in terms of carbon emission reduction, the applications and limitations of widely deployed WAS treatment technologies are discussed. Based on carbon neutrality requirements, the anaerobic co-digestion and co-pyrolysis technologies are comprehensively discussed from the views of pollutants removing efficiencies, enhancement methods, carbon emissions, and resource recovery. Finally, a workable new route for WAS treatment is proposed for future technological advancement and engineering innovation.

Abstract:<p>The organic carbon in municipal wastewater is an energetic substance and can be captured and reused for bioenergy production. A comprehensive evaluation of relevant technical advances and energy recovery potential is essential to provide guidance for sustainability improvement. Although several previous works have covered this topic, most of them have mainly focused on the technical evaluation of a single step, rather than the full treatment line. In this review the currently available processes and achievements related to the capture, recovery and reuse of organic carbon from municipal wastewater for bioenergy production are summarized. The techno-economic evaluation indicates that the biological capture process fails to achieve a good effluent quality when treating wastewater with a high soluble organic content. Chemical coagulants or membranes can be applied as effective methods to assist carbon capture. A fermentation-centered bioprocessing platform is beneficial for the conversion of captured carbon into versatile products. At present, bioenergy recovery is the most promising carbon recovery mode, and the global wastewater sector possesses a 51.06 billion kWh/year bioenergy production potential. Through hydrothermal or pyrolysis treatment, the organic residue arising from the bioprocessing platform can be circularly used. Based on the above analysis, a plant-wide wastewater-to-energy route including a carbon separation system, a bioprocessing platform, and a thermochemical conversion line is envisaged. Additionally, the challenges to achieving the proposed bioenergy production paradigm from municipal wastewater are examined. This review presents the gaps and future prospects in achieving sustainable municipal water pollution control.</p>

Abstract:Research on the potential for chemical energy recovery and the optimization of recovery pathways in different regions of China is still lacking. This study aimed to address this gap by evaluating the potential and optimize the utilization pathways for chemical energy recovery in various regions of China for achieving sustainable wastewater treatment. The results showed that the eastern and northeastern regions of China exhibited higher chemical energy levels under the existing operating conditions. Key factors affecting chemical energy recovery included chemical oxygen demand removal (ΔCOD), treatment scale, and specific energy consumption (μ) of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Furthermore, the average improvement in the chemical energy recovery rate with an optimized utilization pathway was approximately 40% in the WWTPs. The use of the net-zero energy consumption (NZE) model proved effective in improving the chemical energy recovery potential, with an average reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reaching next to 95% in the investigated WWTPs.

Abstract:Continuous population growth associated with sanitation, food waste (FW), and domestic wastewater (DWW) is becoming critical globally. Crucial efforts and appropriate measures to utilize the FW and DWW for resources are needed. This paper reviews the conventional treatment techniques, challenges, and associated merits for treating FW and DWW. In the context of this review, DWW is often referred to as blackwater (BW)/feces. Due to the rationale for resource amplification, the review proposed that both mixtures (FW and DWW) be stored in a sub-surface storage tank for several months or years. They are further biodegraded in a bioprocess to generate energy with stabilized digestates. The effluent's peculiar features are low organic acids with a low pH4 value, offering a stabilized and sanitized effluent. The second proposed route was to integrate anaerobic digestion, composting, and pyrolysis. Anaerobic digestion will offer bioenergy and digestates. Composting will cater to compost production and avert digestate drying and heating costs during pyrolysis. The pyrolysis of the digestates will generate biochar and bioenergy materials, while improved bioprocess performance is attained with the simultaneous biochar utilization in the bioprocess. The integrated technological routes can valorize DWW and FW for maximum resource recovery and sustainable development in a real-world context. The concept can be applied to an existing facility to create a cleaner and more efficient DWW with FW recycling. However, a comprehensive techno-economic analysis must be conducted.

Abstract:With gradual transformation of global linear economy to circular economy, the present municipal wastewater treatment processes designed with the philosophy of take-make-dispose are facing incredible economic and environmental pressures due to high energy consumption, emission of greenhouse gases, waste generation etc. In such a situation, "we cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them" as said Albert Einstein. Therefore, this article intends to trigger discussion on how circular economy is to game-change municipal wastewater treatment technology towards energy and carbon neutrality. As illustrated with anaerobic MBR as an example, municipal wastewater indeed is a regenerative resource of freshwater, energy and mineral nutrients rather than a waste. This will lead to a paradigm shift of municipal wastewater engineering from simple treatment to recovery and reuse of multiple resources for synergistically addressing the water-energy-resource-greenhouse gases nexus in an environmentally and economically sustainable manner, with the ultimate goals of energy and carbon neutrality in municipal wastewater reclamation.

Abstract:In recent years, with the global rise in awareness regarding carbon neutrality, the treatment of wastewater in rural areas is increasingly oriented towards energy conservation, emission reduction, low-carbon output, and resource utilization. This paper provides an analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the current low-carbon treatment process of low-carbon treatment for rural wastewater. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are increasingly being considered as a viable option for treating wastewater in rural regions. In pursuit of carbon neutrality, advanced carbon-neutral bioprocesses are regarded as the prospective trajectory for achieving carbon-neutral treatment of rural wastewater. The incorporation of CWs with emerging biotechnologies such as sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification (SAD), pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification (PAD), and anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) enables efficient removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from rural wastewater. The advancement of CWs towards improved removal of organic and inorganic pollutants, sustainability, minimal energy consumption, and low carbon emissions is widely recognized as a viable low-carbon approach for achieving carbon-neutral treatment of rural wastewater. This study offers novel perspectives on the sustainable development of wastewater treatment in rural areas within the framework of achieving carbon neutrality in the future.

Abstract:In the context of global sustainable development, traditional wastewater treatment models reveal its shortcomings due to lack of recovering resource and energy in wastewater. Sustainable wastewater treatment technologies, taken wastewater as carriers of resource and energy, have been paid close attention. Starting from the existing problems of present wastewater treatment technology and focusing on the concept of resource recovery and energy utilization, this paper discussed the production technologies for hydrogen, electricity, diesel and methane from wastewater based on carbon resource recovery, and nitrogen resource treatment technologies with low energy consumption (such as shortcut nitrification-denitrification, ANAMMOX and SND). The latest research processes were also summarized. The research and development orientation of sustainable treatment technology for urban wastewater was put forward.

Abstract:Abstract Global warming – mainly caused by carbon emissions – is a major global challenge for human sustainable development. Carbon emission reduction and resource recovery from sludge treatment are critical to the carbon neutralisation of future wastewater treatment plants. This paper analyses the key elements of carbon emissions during sludge treatment and disposal, namely energy source carbon emissions, fugitive carbon emissions and carbon compensation. Of the four mainstream process routes analysed in this work, anaerobic digestion + dry incineration is identified as the route with the highest potential for reducing carbon emissions in the future. Finally, based on a review of current international research hotspots, the future development directions for sludge treatment and resource recovery are discussed. This paper thus provides a comprehensive understanding of the current sludge treatment processing routes and serves as a reference for process route selection and future research on carbon neutralisation.

Abstract:Advancements in biological wastewater treatment with sustainable and circularity approaches have a wide scope of application. Biological wastewater treatment is widely used to remove/recover organic pollutants and nutrients from a diverse wastewater spectrum. However, conventional biological processes face challenges, such as low efficiency, high energy consumption, and the generation of excess sludge. To overcome these limitations, integrated strategies that combine biological treatment with other physical, chemical, or biological methods have been developed and applied in recent years. This review emphasizes the recent advances in integrated strategies for biological wastewater treatment, focusing on their mechanisms, benefits, challenges, and prospects. The review also discusses the potential applications of integrated strategies for diverse wastewater treatment towards green energy and resource recovery, along with low-carbon fuel production. Biological treatment methods, viz., bioremediation, electro-coagulation, electro-flocculation, electro-Fenton, advanced oxidation, electro-oxidation, bioelectrochemical systems, and photo-remediation, are summarized with respect to non-genetically modified metabolic reactions. Different conducting materials (CMs) play a significant role in mass/charge transfer metabolic processes and aid in enhancing fermentation rates. Carbon, metal, and nano-based CMs hybridization in different processes provide favorable conditions to the fermentative biocatalyst and trigger their activity towards overcoming the limitations of the conventional process. The emerging field of nanotechnology provides novel additional opportunities to surmount the constraints of conventional process for enhanced waste remediation and resource valorization. Holistically, integrated strategies are promising alternatives for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of biological wastewater treatment while also contributing to the circular economy and environmental protection.
Comparative review on microbial electrochemical technologies for resource recovery from wastewater towards circular economy and carbon neutrality

Abstract:Newly arising concepts such as the circular economy and carbon neutrality motivate resource recovery from wastewater. This paper reviews and discusses state-of-the-art microbial electrochemical technologies (METs), specifically microbial fuel cells (MFCs), microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) and microbial recycling cells (MRCs), which enable energy generation and nutrient recovery from wastewater. Mechanisms, key factors, applications, and limitations are compared and discussed. METs are effective in energy conversion, demonstrating advantages, drawbacks and future potential as specific scenarios. MECs and MRCs exhibited greater potential for simultaneous nutrient recovery, and MRCs offer the best scaling-up potential and efficient mineral recovery. Research on METs should be more concerned with lifespan of materials, secondary pollutants reduction and scaled-up benchmark systems. More up-scaled application cases are expected for cost structures comparison and life cycle assessment of METs. This review could direct the follow-up research, development and successful implementation of METs for resource recovery from wastewater.

Abstract:Waste to energy and fuel is an emerging area to deal with waste treatment and realize the circular economy. The issues regarding the disposal of wet waste, especially food waste, are of continuous concern worldwide. The growth of wet waste, which is a manifestation of increased human production and consumption, may imply a high carbon input to the atmosphere. However, it can be converted into bioenergy and biochar, which means a latent economic performance and negative emission potential. Studies on wet-waste conversion technologies have been frequently seen in recent years, whereas few studies have been conducted to summarize, compare, and discuss them. In this review, we evaluate several typical wet-waste conversion technologies (including but not limited to anaerobic digestion, hydrothermal carbonization, incineration, gasification, and pyrolysis) through a literature survey and highlight their carbon emissions and negative emission potential for different categories of wet waste. The review shows that, for the treatment of wet waste, including sewage sludge, food waste, and animal manure, all of the discussed wet-waste conversion technologies were found to be more environmentally favorable than traditional landfilling or composting methods. Anaerobic digestion stands out in terms of both sustainability and commercial maturity. Alongside the assessment of carbon footprints across various wet-waste categories, the technological development and economic performance of the waste-to-energy technologies and the application of artificial intelligence in the field have also been reviewed, aiming to present an objective and comprehensive overview of the advantages and disadvantages of these technologies and to ascribe possible projections of future developments in this domain.

Optimizing the recovery pathway of a net-zero energy wastewater treatment model by balancing energy recovery and eco-efficiency

Abstract:<p>As more countries commit to carbon neutrality, the concept of carbon-neutral or energy self-sufficient wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is attracting more attention. Optimizing energy recovery evaluation from both economic and ecological perspectives contributes to promoting this concept into practice. In this study, the energy recovery and eco-efficiency balance in a WWTP in China with the weekly operating status as the decision-making unit was explored. In addition to the chemical energy recovered by anaerobic digestion with combined heat and power (CHP), the thermal energy in wastewater and solar energy can be recovered through the heat pump (HP) and photovoltaic (PV) modules and form optimal pathways in the net-zero energy wastewater treatment model. Additionally, with three inputs and seven outputs covering both economic and ecological indicators, a slacks-based measure in data envelopment analysis was conducted to evaluate eco-efficiency. The results show that the water quantity of WWTPs can be influenced by seasonal variations, causing low eco-efficiency in summer; for water quality, carbon source shortages can hinder the efficiency. The most efficient performance was achieved under tech-portfolios of CHP + PV or CHP + PV + HP. The eco-efficiency distribution exhibited a similar normal distribution to energy recovery, with optimal eco-efficiency achieved at energy recovery rates of 85–90%. With further improvements in energy recovery, the marginal benefit of the energy yield decreased. This study provides optimized energy recovery pathways in WWTPs by balancing energy recovery and eco-efficiency, which is significant for planning technical renovation in WWTPs for energy recovery.</p>

Abstract:Stringent new legislation for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is currently motivating innovation and optimization of wastewater treatment technologies. Evaluating the environmental performance of a wastewater treatment system is a necessary precursor before proposing implementation of WWTPs designed to address the global requirements for reduced resource use, energy consumption and environmental emissions. However, developing overly-sophisticated treatment methods may lead to negative environmental effects. This study was conducted to employ a process modeling approach from a life cycle perspective to construct and evaluate six anaerobic/anoxic/oxic wastewater treatment systems that include a water line, sludge line and bioenergy recovery system and was designed to meet different treatment standards in China. The results revealed that improved treatments optimized for local receiving watercourses can be realized at the cost of higher resource consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Optimal Scenarios were also identified from different positive perspectives.
