Abstract:Bacterial infection threatens human health, so the design of efficient and stable photocatalytic antibacterial materials has attracted widespread attention. In this regard, a novel photocatalyst GQDs/NH2-MIL-125 (GQDs: graphene quantum dots) was prepared by the solvothermal method for photocatalytic disinfection. Since the addition of GQDs enhanced the absorption of visible light and also accelerated the transfer of photogenerated electrons, the photocatalytic performance of GQDs/NH2-MIL-125 was significantly improved. 5 wt% GQDs loading sample (2-GQDs/NH2-MIL-125) exhibited the best antibacterial properties. The killing efficiency by 2-GQDs/NH2-MIL-125 against E. coli and S. aureus (10(7) CFU center dot mL(-1)) increased from 40 % and 75 % by NH2-MIL-125 to 92 % and 93 % within 60 min, respectively. Moreover, through the single-wavelength antibacterial experiments, it was found that the introduction of GQDs led to a wide-range-responsive antibacterial effect. Through photocatalytic trapping experiments and ESR analysis, the dominant roles of superoxide radicals (center dot O-2(-)) were confirmed in the antibacterial process. Finally, by studying the state of bacteria via TEM, confocal fluorescent images, and gel electrophoresis, it was found that the active substances not only destroyed the cell membranes but also further destroyed DNA to achieve the purpose of completely killing bacteria. This work provides a new method for the rapid disinfection of pathogenic microorganisms using GQDs-related photocatalysts.

Abstract:Copper oxide(CuO), due to its low cost, good chemical and physical stability, has recently been given special attention as a potential candidate for antibacterial agents. However, developing novel CuO nanocomposites with improved antibacterial property and unraveling the interface promotion mechanism has been a fundamental challenge for decades. Herein, well-defined CuO/graphdiyne(CuO/GDY) nanostructures with uniformly anchored CuO nanoparticles(ca. 4.5 nm) have been fabricated. The CuO/GDY nanostructure exhibited superior E. coli inactivation efficiency, which is nearly 19 times and 7.9 times higher than the bare GDY and commercial CuO, respectively. The improved E. coli inactivation performance was mainly due to the increased reactive ·O2− species generated by the activation of molecular O2 over CuO/GDY surface. These findings demonstrate the efficient antibacterial activity of well-defined CuO/GDY nanostructures and provide insights on the development of efficient GDY-based antibacterial materials.
Robust Antibacterial Activity of Tungsten Oxide (WO3-X) Nanodots

Abstract:Antibacterial agents are an important tool in the prevention of bacterial infections. Inorganic materials are attractive due to their high stability under a variety of conditions compared to organic antibacterial agents. Herein tungsten oxide nanodots (WO3-X), synthesized by a simple one-pot synthetic approach, was found to exhibit efficient antibacterial capabilities. The analyses with colony-forming units (CFU) showed excellent antibacterial activity of WO3-X against both gram-negative E. coli (Escherichia coli) and gram-positive S. aureus (Staphylococcus aureus) strains. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed clear damage to the bacterial cell membranes, which was further confirmed by molecular dynamics simulations. Additionally, exposure to simulated sunlight was found to further increase germicidal activity of WO3-X nanodots – a 30-minute exposure to sunlight (combining 50 μg/mL WO3-X nanodots) showed a 70% decrease in E. coli viability compared to without exposure. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) was used to elucidate the underlying mechanism of this photocatalytic activity through the generation of hydroxyl radical species. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and the live/dead assay were further employed to evaluate the cytotoxicity of WO3-X nanodots on eukaryotic cells, which demonstrated their general biocompatibility. In all, our results suggest WO3-X nanodots have considerable potential in antibacterial applications, while also being biocompatible at large.
Enhanced bacterial inactivation by activated carbon modified with nano-sized silver oxides: Performance and mechanism

Abstract:In this study, nano-sized silver oxides were loaded on activated carbon (nAg2O/AC) through a facile impregnation-calcination method for enhanced bacterial inactivation from drinking water, in which Escherichia coli (E. coli) was used as target bacteria. XRD and SEM characterization confirmed that nano-sized Ag2O particles (50-200 nm) were successfully prepared and uniformly distributed on the surfaces and pores of AC. Due to the structural reducing groups of AC, surface-bound Ag(I) was partially converted to Ag in the nAg2O matrix and the resulted Ag could sterilize E. coli directly. More importantly, surface-bound Ag could catalyze O2 and H2O to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for oxidation sterilization, thus significantly enhanced the inactivation efficiency from 0.8 log10 CFU/mL (nAg2O control) and 0.2 log10 CFU/mL (AC control) to 6.0 log10 CFU/mL in the nAg2O/AC system. The inactivation process was highly pH-dependent, and neutral pH was favorable for sterilization. A sterilization efficiency of 5.2 log10 CFU/mL could still be achieved after 5 running cycles, indicating stable sterilization performance of nAg2O/AC. In addition, the nAg2O/AC also exhibited excellent renewability since a sterilization efficiency of 5.8 log10 CFU/mL was obtained after nAg2O being stripped and reloaded on the AC. These results demonstrated that nAg2O-modified AC is an efficient material for sterilization in water treatment.

Engineering Atomic Ag1-N6 Sites with Enhanced Performance of Eradication Drug-Resistant Bacteria over Visible-Light-Driven Antibacterial Membrane

Abstract:Utilizing visible light for water disinfection is a more convenient, safe, and practical alternative to ultraviolet-light sterilization. Herein, we developed silver (Ag) single-atom anchored g-C3N4 (P-CN) nanosheets (Ag-1/CN) and then utilized a spin-coating method to fabricate the Ag-1/CN-based-membrane for effective antibacterial performance in natural water and domestic wastewater. The incorporated Ag single atom formed a Ag-1-N-6 motif, which increased the charge density around the N atoms, resulting in a built-in electric field similar to 17.2 times stronger than that of pure P-CN and optimizing the dynamics of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Additionally, the Ag-1-N-6 motif inhibited the release of Ag ions, ensuring good biocompatibility. Based on the first-principles calculation, the adsorption energy of O-2 on the Ag-1/CN (-0.32 eV) was lower than that of P-CN (-0.07 eV), indicating that loaded Ag single atom can lower the energy barrier for O-2 activation, generating extra *OH radicals that cooperated with *O-2(-) to effectively neutralize bacteria. As a result, the Ag-1/CN powder-catalyst with the concentration of 30 ppm demonstrated a 99.9% antibacterial efficiency against drug-resistant bacteria (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, kanamycin-resistant Escherichia coli, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) under visible-light irradiation for 4 h. This efficacy was 24.8 times higher than that of the P-CN powder catalyst. Moreover, the Ag-1/CN-based-membrane can maintain a 99.9% bactericidal efficiency for natural water and domestic wastewater treatment using a homemade flow device, demonstrating its potential for water disinfection. Notably, the visible-light-driven antibacterial efficiency of the Ag-1/CN catalyst outperformed the majority of the reported g-C3N4-based catalysts/membranes.

Abstract:As common reactive oxygen species, H2O2 is widely used for bacterial inactivation and wound disinfection. However, the concentrations used are always higher than physiological levels, which frequently result in potential toxicity to healthy tissue and even delay wound healing. Here we report highly efficient nanozyme hybrids that are capable of activating biologically relevant concentrations of H2O2 for defending bacterial infections. The integration of AuNPs with ultrathin graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) provides excellent peroxidase-activity, which can catalyze the decomposition of H2O2 to OH radicals much more efficiently, allowing the use of bio-safety levels of H2O2 for the first time. Furthermore, our system not only exhibits striking bactericidal performance against both DR Gram-negative and DR Gram-positive bacteria, but also shows high efficiency in breaking down the existing DR-biofilms and prevented formation of new biofilms in vitro. More importantly, in vivo experiments indicate that our system could significantly prevent bacterial infections and accelerate the healing rate of wounds.

Abstract:Providing clean and affordable drinking water without harmful disinfection byproducts generated by conventional chemical disinfectants gives rise to the need for technological innovation. Nanotechnology has great potential in purifying water and wastewater treatment. A graphene oxide-silver (GO-Ag) nanocomposite with excellent antibacterial activity was prepared and characterized by transmission electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The tests were carried out using Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as model strains of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, respectively. The effect of bactericide dosage and pH on antibacterial activity of GO-Ag was examined. Morphological observation of bacterial cells by scanning electron microscope showed that GO-Ag was much more destructive to cell membrane of Escherichia coli than that of Staphylococcus aureus. Experiments were carried out using catalase, superoxide dismutase and sodium thioglycollate to investigate the formation of reactive oxygen species and free silver ions in the bactericidal process. The activity of intracellular antioxidant enzymes was measured to investigate the potential role of oxidative stress. According to the consequence, synergetic mechanism including destruction of cell membranes and oxidative stress accounted for the antibacterial activity of GO-Ag nanocomposites. All the results suggested that GO-Ag nanocomposites displayed a good potential for application in water disinfection.
Enhanced Synergetic Antibacterial Activity by a Reduce Graphene Oxide/ag Nanocomposite Through the Photothermal Effect.

Abstract:Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial strains have led to notable heathy threats to human beings. The demand for the development of effective antibacterial materials is increasing. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and graphene-based nanomaterials are two major types of nanomaterials that are studied to inhibit and/or kill bacteria. In this study, by combining the excellent photothermal effect of graphene and antibacterial activity of AgNPs, we have applied reduced graphene oxide/silver (RGO/Ag) nanocomposite to destroy the MDR bacteria. The antibacterial activity of the RGO/Ag nanocomposite was systematically investigated using a regular bacterium of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and an MDR bacterium of Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kp). Compared with AgNPs, graphene oxide (GO) and RGO, the RGO/Ag nanocomposite showed significant higher antibacterial efficiency for both regular bacteria and MDR bacteria. Under a near-infrared (NIR) irradiation (0.30 W/cm(2) for 10 min), the RGO/Ag nanocomposite demonstrated an enhanced synergetic antibacterial activity through the photothermal effect. Nearly 100 % of E. coli and Kp were killed by the treatment of 15 mu g/mL and 30 mu g/mL of RGO/Ag nanocomposite, respectively. Moreover, a membrane integrity assay and a reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay demonstrated that the RGO/Ag nanocomposite under NIR irradiation induced the cell membrane disruption and generation of ROS, providing possible mechanisms for their high antibacterial activity besides the photothermal effect. Finally, the cytotoxicity of the RGO/Ag nanocomposites toward different mammalian cells was studied, the cell viabilities retained above 60 % at higher concentrations of RGO/Ag, indicating that the RGO/Ag nanocomposites may be a low cytotoxic, efficient antibacterial agent with the irradiation.
Synergistic Ag/TiO2-N Photocatalytic System and Its Enhanced Antibacterial Activity Towards Acinetobacter Baumannii

Abstract:The hybrid Ag/TiO2-N photocatalyst was prepared via a supercritical solvothermal process in ethanol fluid. The simultaneous achievement of reduction of Ag+ ions and N-doping in silver-ammonia complex solution led to the uniform distribution of Ag nanoparticles stably combined with the surface of TiO2-N substrate. As a result, the visible-light photocatalytic inactivation of Acinetobacter batunannff was facilitated via the enhanced visible light harvesting and the high separation efficiency of photo-induced charge carriers. By means of the main active species of center dot O-2(-) radical, the synergistic effect of Ag nanoparticles and TiO2-N could induce the structure change of bacteria with the leakage of K+ ions as well as the mineralization of cell membrane with the elimination of self-repair function, leading to the final cell death. In comparison, the bactericidal activity of Ag nanoparticles and TiO2-N under UV light irradiation was due to the intrinsic efficiency and the high light harvesting, respectively. The photothermal effect of Ag nanoparticles in the near-IR light region could be possibly remained by TiO2-N substrate to achieve the antibacterial activity. Furthermore, Ag/TiO2-N photocatalyst played great bactericidal effect for kinds of bacteria, implying the applicable future to the medical disinfection.
Fabrication of Cu2O-Ag Nanocomposites with Enhanced Durability and Bactericidal Activity

Abstract:Hybrid Cuprous oxide-silver (Cu2O-Ag) have attracted tremendous attention due to their various applications in photocatalysis, surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), and optical features. Here we expanded the application to exhibit excellent chemical stability and synergistic bactericidal. We prepared Cu2O-Ag heterostructure through thermally decomposing Ag-acetate to deposit Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) onto Cu2O surface. Cu2O-Ag heterostructure bears exceptional stability while exposing to oxygen, water, and light, owing to the physical coating of Ag NPs and transferring the electrons and holes inside the Cu2O to the surface through a Schottky barrier to prevent photocorrosion. The deposition of Ag NPs also improved the intensity and time of oxidative stress reaction of Cu2O, proved by reactive oxygen species (ROS) examination. Ag NPs distributed on the surface of Cu2O particles formed a large of ion release channel, resulting in excellent sustained release of copper ions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to investigate the mechanism of photocatalysis and ROS generation. The constructed Cu2O-Ag heterostructure exhibit highly long-term sterilization activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) which were maintained around 70% and 80% and were increased by 40% and 50% compared with free Cu2O after being immersed in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) solutions within 14 days.

Abstract:Nanozymes have drawn increasing attention due to unique enzyme-mimic catalytic activities for the treatment of bacterial infections. Herein, a novel tri-metal nanozyme for synergistic eradication of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was generated by Mo/Fe doped carbon dots (Mo/Fe-CDs) wrapping copper peroxide (CuO2) nanozyme (Mo/Fe@CuO2). Mo/Fe@CuO2 showed near-infrared (NIR) light-enhanced peroxidase-like catalytic activity, and H2O2 self-supply to promote the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for highly efficient antibacterial photothermal therapy. The CuO2 could generate H2O2 in the acidic microenvironment, and Mo/Fe-CDs consequently could convert H2O2 to hydroxyl radicals (·OH), resulting in the improvement of sterilization efficiency. Interestingly, Mo/Fe-CDs could activate the transformation of Cu2+ to Cu+ through the co-catalytic reaction based on the Mo4+/Mo6+ and Fe3+/Fe2+ redox couples, and provided photonic hyperthermia (PTT) to enhance the peroxidase-like activity. Meanwhile, Mo/Fe@CuO2 showed glutathione (GSH) oxidase-like activity, which can achieve the depletion of glutathione (GSH) in bacteria, thus significantly improving the bactericidal effect. The collaborative eradication of bacteria, through innovative metal carbon-based nanozyme technology, provides a powerful and feasible approach to treating bacterial infections that threaten human health.

Abstract:Herein, Ag-doped magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles were prepared by a citric acid-assist sol-gel method. It is evidenced that the size of MgO particles decreases after Ag doping and a small amount of Ag is doped into MgO crystal. The bacterial inactivation of as-prepared Ag-doped MgO against Escherichia coli (E. coli) suggests that Ag doping can greatly enhance the antibacterial activity of MgO nanoparticles and 1% Ag-doped MgO inactivates effectively 7-log bacterial cells within 20min. The releases of metal ions (Ag+ and Mg2+) from Ag-doped MgO are at a very low level, which would not play the leading role in bacterial inactivation. The mechanism for the improvement of antibacterial activity of Ag-doped MgO is concluded as three aspects. Firstly, Ag doping can inhibit the grain growth of MgO nanoparticles, resulting in smaller size of MgO particles. Secondly, when Ag+ is doped into MgO matrix, more oxygen vacancies will be generated to keep an overall neutral charge. Thirdly, Ag-doped MgO has a relatively low electron-transfer resistance, which can accelerate the electron transfer within MgO crystal, in favour of the single-electron reduction of adsorbed oxygen. All these would substantially enhance ROS production and the contact interaction between bacterial cells and nanoparticles. Therefore, Ag doping can markedly promote the antibacterial activity of MgO nanoparticles.

Abstract:The development of effective nanomaterials for killing anaerobic bacteria is essential for human health and economic development. Here, we propose a new bactericidal mechanism where theoretical calculations are in good agreement with experimental results. The “poison arrow-head” of MoS2 nanosheets enables the vigorous extraction of lipids from the cell membrane. Based on density functional calculations, oxidation active species (OAS) are generated due to the strong adsorption energy between S vacancies in MoS2 and chemical substrates (permonosulfate (PMS) and H2O). These OAS can be visualized as numerous moving “nano killers”, constantly oxidizing the lipids around MoS2; thereby, re-releasing the surface of the sharp knife. The process of physical extraction collaborated with chemical oxidation not only precisely positions the cell membrane but also allows for continuous sterilization. This work digs into the mechanism of anaerobic bacterial sterilization, which sheds significant light on biological analysis, antibacterial, cancer therapy, and anti microbiologically influenced corrosion.

Abstract:The widespread use of antibiotics often increases bacterial resistance. Herein, we reported a silver peroxide-incorporated carbon dots (defined as Ag2O2-CDs) with high photothermal conversion efficiency viain situoxidation process. The prepared Ag2O2-CDs exhibited ultra-small size of 2.0 nm and hybrid phase structure. Meanwhile, the Ag2O2-CDs were of a similar optical performance comparing with traditional carbon dots (CDs). Importantly, the incorporation of Ag2O2into CDs significantly enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency from 3.8% to 28.5%. By combining silver ion toxicity and photothermal ablation, the Ag2O2-CDs were capable of destroying gram-positive and gram-negative bacterium effectively. These findings demonstrated that the Ag2O2-CDs could be served as a potential antibacterial agent for clinical applications.
Hydrodynamic Tearing of Bacteria on Nanotips for Sustainable Water Disinfection.

Abstract:Water disinfection is conventionally achieved by oxidation or irradiation, which is often associated with a high carbon footprint and the formation of toxic byproducts. Here, we describe a nano-structured material that is highly effective at killing bacteria in water through a hydrodynamic mechanism. The material consists of carbon-coated, sharp Cu(OH)2 nanowires grown on a copper foam substrate. We show that mild water flow (e.g. driven from a storage tank) can efficiently tear up bacteria through a high dispersion force between the nanotip surface and the cell envelope. Bacterial cell rupture is due to tearing of the cell envelope rather than collisions. This mechanism produces rapid inactivation of bacteria in water, and achieved complete disinfection in a 30-day field test. Our approach exploits fluidic energy and does not require additional energy supply, thus offering an efficient and low-cost system that could potentially be incorporated in water treatment processes in wastewater facilities and rural communities.
Synergistic Photocatalytic Inactivation Mechanisms of Bacteria by Graphene Sheets Grafted Plasmonic AgAgX (X = Cl, Br, I) Composite Photocatalyst under Visible Light Irradiation.

Abstract:By coupling graphene sheet and plasmonic photocatalysis technologies, a series of Ag-AgX/RGOs (X = Cl, Br, I; RGO = reduced graphene oxide) composites were prepared and found to be efficient antimicrobial agents for water disinfection upon visible light. Attributed to the efficient charge transfer by RGO sheets, the optimum Ag AgBr/0.5% RGO could completely inactivate 2 x 10(7) cfu mL(-1) of Escherichia coli within 8 min, much faster than bare Ag AgBr within 35 min. The synergistic antimicrobial mechanism of Ag-AgBr/0.5% RGO was studied by Ag+ ions release evaluation, radical scavengers study, and radical determination. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of irradiated Ag AgBr/0.5% RGO originated from the synergistic activities of its three components including Ag, AgBr and RGO, and the proposed mechanisms contained enhanced attraction by RGO followed by two pathways: primary oxidative stress caused by plasma induced reactive species like H2O2 and bactericidal effect of released Ag+ ions. Furthermore, characterization of E. coli cells using SEM, fluorescent microscopy, and cytoplasmic substance leakage illustrated that VL irradiated Ag AgBr/0.5% RGO could not only cause metabolic dysfunction but also destroy the cell envelope and biomolecular, while irradiated Ag+ ions play a differential bactericidal action with a limited metabolic injury and no cell -membrane damage. The present work provides an efficient water disinfection technology and also opens a new idea in studying the antimicrobial mechanism of plasmonic photocatalyst. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Synthesis of Activated Carbon-Supported Nano Copper Oxide and Its Inactivation Performance on Escherichia Coli in Water

Abstract:Copper oxide (CuO) is limited in inactivating bacteria due to the deficiency of active Cu(I) that can catalyze dissolved oxygen to produce reactive oxygen radicals. A novel sterilization agent was developed to inactivate Escherichia coli (E. coli) by loading nano copper oxide onto activated carbon (nCuO/AC) with a facile impregnation method. Surface techniques proved that CuO with a size of 100-200 nm was evenly loaded on AC surface, which improved its dispersity and reactivity. XPS analysis further revealed a cycle of surface-bonded Cu(II) to Cu (I) in the nCuO matrix that was driven by reducing groups on AC surface such as hydroxyl. The resultant Cu(I) activated dissolved oxygen to produce reactive oxygen species for bacterial inactivation. Superoxide radical (center dot O2-) was proved to be the primarily oxidative species during the sterilization process by EPR analysis and quenching investigations. Therefore, the nCuO/AC achieved an enhanced inactivation efficiency of 6.0 log CFU/mL as compared to those of 1.1 and 0.4 log CFU/mL by the nCuO and AC, respectively. The above sterilization reaction was pH-dependent and high inactivation efficiency could be achieved under neutral conditions. Additionally, the nCuO/AC exhibited excellent stability with an inactivation efficiency of 5.4 log CFU/mL after 4 cycles. Spent nCuO/AC showed great potential in renewability because it could inactivate 5.5 log CFU/mL of E. coli by peeling off residual nCuO on AC surface with sulfuric acid and reloading new nCuO through impregnation, with a regeneration rate up to 97.2 %. The above results demonstrated that nCuO/AC could be a promising bactericidal material for water treatment.

Abstract:Microbial interactions between infectious agents severely interfere with the disinfection process, and current disinfection methods are unable to effectively inactivate intracellular pathogens, posing a new threat to drinking water safety. In this study, we first reported the high efficiency of piezocatalysis in inactivating amoebae and their intracellular bacteria. Results showed that the inactivation rates of the MoS 2 /rGO piezocatalytic system for amoebic spores and their intracellular bacteria were 4.18 and 5.02-log, respectively, within 180 min. Based on scavenger studies and ESR tests, the efficient inactivation of pathogens can be attributed to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and different pathogens exhibit varying tolerances to distinct ROS. Moreover, TEM analysis revealed that the sharp edge of MoS 2 /rGO was conducive to the physical cutting of amoeba's cell wall and membrane, promoting the attack of ROS and ensuring a more thorough deactivation. Additionally, the intracellular ROS produced by amoebae is not only conducive to the inactivation of amoebae but also the main reason for the inactivation of bacteria in spores. This study provides a new solution for the inactivation of amoeba spores and their intracellular bacteria and emphasizes the high efficiency of the synergistic effect of physical damage and chemical oxidation.

Abstract:The efficient generation and utilization of ROSs is a key step in determining the achievement of safe drinking water by photocatalytic bacterial inactivation technology. Although graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) serves as a green and promising photocatalyst for water disinfection, insufficient bacterial capturing capacity and serious charge recombination of pristine g-C3N4 extremely restrict its bactericidal activity. Herein, we develop a facile thermal exfoliation and thermal polymerization method to prepare the nitrogen-defective ultrathin g-C3N4 nanosheets (DUCN-500). Our results showed that ultrathin nanosheet structure greatly enhanced bacterial capturing capacity of g-C3N4 to increase the utilization efficiency of ROS, which contributed to the performance of DUCN-500 greatly outperforming bulk g-C3N4. The nitrogen defects increased ROS generation (·O2- and H2O2) by approximately 4.6 times, which was attributed to negative shift of the conduction band potential and rapid separation of charge carriers. The DUCN-500 could rapidly and completely inactivate Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis in real sewage under simulated solar irradiation, accompanied by good anti-interference capability and stability. Additionally, bacterial morphology destruction, the loss of antioxidant enzyme activity and the leakage of protein were proven to be the main mechanisms of photocatalytic sterilization. This study offers new insight into the rational design of efficient g-C3N4-based photocatalysts for water disinfection.
