Abstract:Abstract Since the initial discovery of Ti 3 C 2 a decade ago, there has been a significant surge of interest in 2D MXenes and MXene‐based composites. This can be attributed to the remarkable intrinsic properties exhibited by MXenes, including metallic conductivity, abundant functional groups, unique layered microstructure, and the ability to control interlayer spacing. These properties contribute to the exceptional electrical and mechanical performance of MXenes, rendering them highly suitable for implementation as candidate materials in flexible and wearable energy storage devices. Recently, a substantial number of novel research has been dedicated to exploring MXene‐based flexible materials with diverse functionalities and specifically designed structures, aiming to enhance the efficiency of energy storage systems. In this review, a comprehensive overview of the synthesis and fabrication strategies employed in the development of these diverse MXene‐based materials is provided. Furthermore, an in‐depth analysis of the energy storage applications exhibited by these innovative flexible materials, encompassing supercapacitors, Li‐ion batteries, Li–S batteries, and other potential avenues, is conducted. In addition to presenting the current state of the field, the challenges encountered in the implementation of MXene‐based flexible materials are also highlighted and insights are provided into future research directions and prospects.

Abstract:AbstractThe growing need for flexible and wearable electronics, such as smartwatches and foldable displays, highlights the shortcomings of traditional energy storage methods. In response, scientists are developing compact, flexible, and foldable energy devices to overcome these challenges. MXenes—a family of two‐dimensional nanomaterials—are a promising solution because of their unique properties, including a large surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, numerous functional groups, and distinctive layered structures. These attributes make MXenes attractive options for flexible energy storage. This paper reviews recent advances in using flexible MXene‐based materials for flexible Li−S batteries, metal‐ion batteries (Zn and Na), and supercapacitors. The development of MXene‐based composites is explored, with a detailed electrochemical performance analysis of various flexible devices. The review addresses significant challenges and outlines strategic objectives for advancing robust and flexible MXene‐based energy storage devices.

Abstract:The increasing demands for wearable electronics have stimulated the rapid development of flexible energy storage devices. MXenes are considered as promising flexible electrodes due to the ultrahigh volumetric specific capacitance, metallic conductivity, superior hydrophily, and rich surface chemistry. This work reviews, for the first time, the recent advances of MXene-based nanomaterials in flexible energy storage devices, including pure MXenes, MXene-carbon composites, MXene-metal oxide composites, and MXenepolymer composites. Applications of MXenes in flexible electronics such as sensors, nanogenerators, and electromagnetic interference shielding are also included. Then, properties of stress, strain, conductivity, and capacitance are compared to help researchers to keep balance between mechanical and electrochemical performances in designing flexible devices. Finally, challenges together with the possible solutions related to the application of MXenes in flexible devices and outlook to future directions are provided.

Abstract:Transition metal carbides and/or nitrides (MXenes), a burgeoning group of 2 D layer-structure compounds, have multiple merits, such as high electrical conductivity, tunable layer structure, small band gap, and functionalized redox-active surface, and are receiving significant attention as one of the most promising class of energy storage materials. The synthesis methods, structural configuration, and surface chemistry of MXenes directly influence their performance. This Minireview focuses on interfacial structure design and functionalization of MXenes and MXene-based energy storage materials and the effect of structural configuration and surface chemistry on their electrochemical performance. Additionally, the structure-property relationships between interfacial structure, functional group, interlayer spacing, and the corresponding energy storage performance are summarized in detail. Finally, light is shed on the perspectives for the future research on advanced MXene-based energy storage materials including scientific and technical challenges.

Abstract:An emerging family of layered early transition metal carbides and/or nitrides—MXenes—has been intensively investigated by both theoretical calculations and experimental research to explore their unique properties and potential applications. The two-dimensional film morphology coupled with a fascinating combination of metallic conductivity and the hydrophilic nature of their functionalized surface render them as promising candidates for a wide range of utilizations. This article reviews recent advances on MXenes and their composites with either polymers or small molecules. Their wet chemistry and structural characterization are first described. Then we discuss in detail their numerous applications of energy storage and conversion including supercapacitors, batteries and thermoelectric devices. In particular, their electrochemical and thermoelectric properties, performances and mechanisms are presented with regard to their respective structures, compositions and fabrication methods. Finally, a conclusion of recent progress on MXenes is made with a perspective for their possible future directions.

Abstract:Over the past decade, two-dimensional (2D) Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes demonstrated attractive characteristics such as high electrical conductivity, tunable layered structure, controllable interfacial chemical composition, high optical transparency, and excellent electromagnetic wave absorption, enabling Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes as promising electrode materials in energy storage devices. Among these devices, flexible energy storage devices have attracted wide attention and developed rapidly due to the synchronously excellent electrochemical and mechanical properties. This review summarizes the recent progress of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes pertaining to novel material preparation and promising applications in energy storage and conversion including batteries, supercapacitors, solar cells, and solar steam generation. This work aims to provide an in-depth and reasonable understanding of the relationship between the unique nanostructure/chemical composition of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes and competitive electrochemical properties, which will facilitate the development of 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes for practical energy storage and solar energy conversion devices.

Abstract:MXenes add dozens of metallic conductors to the family of two-dimensional (2D) materials. A top-down synthesis approach removing A-layer atoms (e.g., Al, Si, and Ga) in MAX phases to produce 2D flakes attaches various surface terminations to MXenes. With these terminations, MXenes show tunable properties, promising a range of applications from energy storage devices to electronics, including sensors, transistors, and antennas. MXenes are also excellent building blocks to create flexible films used for flexible and wearable devices. This article summarizes the synthesis of MXene flakes and highlights aspects that need attention for flexible devices. Rather than listing the development of energy storage devices in detail, we focus on the main challenges of and solutions for constructing high-performance devices. Moreover, we show the applications of MXene films in electronics to call on designs to construct a complete system based on MXene with good flexibility, which consists of a power source, sensors, transistors, and wireless communications.

Abstract:The development of two-dimensional (2D) high-performance electrode materials is the key to new advances in the fields of energy conversion and storage. MXenes, a new intriguing family of 2D transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, have recently received considerable attention due to their unique combination of properties such as high electrical conductivity, hydrophilic nature, excellent thermal stability, large interlayer spacing, easily tunable structure, and high surface area. In this review, we discuss how 2D MXenes have emerged as efficient and economical nanomaterials for future energy applications. We highlight the promising potential of these materials in energy conversion and storage applications, such as water electrolyzers, lithium ion batteries, and supercapacitors. Finally, we present an outlook of the future development of MXenes for sustainable energy technologies.

Abstract:Transition metals nitride, carbide and carbonitride (MXenes) as members of two-dimensional (2D) materials inherit high metallic conductivity, superior hydrophilicity, adjustable interlayer spacing and abundant surface functional groups, thus have attracted widespread attention in the field of energy storage system (ESS). However, the inherent limitations of low capacity, unsatisfactory yield and self-stacking hinder the practical application of MXene. In order to ameliorate the above-mentioned shortcomings, a large number of strategies have been proposed. In this review, we summarize the recent research progress of MXene-based materials applied in ESS, mainly focusing on the preparation strategies, theoretical calculation, as well as electrochemical performance analysis. Moreover, the key challenges and opportunities for MXene-based materials in energy storage devices are also highlighted.

Abstract:Since the discovery of Ti3C2 in 2011, a class of 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides, called MXene, has received increasing attention. So far, about 30 different kinds of MXenes with clear structure and properties exist and more MXenes are theoretically predicted. As a consequence of their excellent metal conductivity, unique in-plane anisotropy, attractive optical, mechanical, and thermal properties, MXenes show great potential for many applications. This review highlights the fundamentals, synthesis, and properties of MXenes, and focuses on applications of MXenes in supercapacitors, batteries, sensors, electromagnetic shielding/absorption and catalysis. Finally, we point out the controversies, challenges, and future opportunities in MXenes.

Abstract:This paper explores the potential of MXenes for enhancing green energy storage systems, addressing key challenges such as synthesis complexity, high costs, and bulk production. It reviews recent advances in MXene synthesis and investigates their application in energy storage, such as batteries, flow batteries and capacitors. The study highlights MXenes′ unique properties, such as high surface area, electrical and thermal conductivity, and chemical stability, which contribute to improved energy storage capacity, cycling stability, and fast charging rates, paving the way for sustainable energy solutions. Green energy storage systems play a vital role in enabling a sustainable future by facilitating the efficient integration and utilization of renewable energy sources. The main problems related to two‐dimensional (2D) materials are their difficult synthesis process, high cost, and bulk production, which hamper their performance. In recent years, MXenes have emerged as highly promising materials for enhancing the performance of energy storage devices due to their unique properties, including their high surface area, excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, and exceptional chemical stability. This paper presents a comprehensive scientific approach that explores the potential of MXenes for empowering green energy storage systems. Which indicates the novelty of the article. The paper reviews the latest advances in MXene synthesis techniques. Furthermore, investigates the application of MXenes in various energy storage technologies, such as lithium‐ion batteries, supercapacitors, and emerging energy storage devices. The utilization of MXenes as electrodes in flexible and transparent energy storage devices is also discussed. Moreover, the paper highlights the potential of MXenes in addressing key challenges in energy storage, including enhancing energy storage capacity, improving cycling stability, and promoting fast charging and discharging rates. Additionally, industrial application and cost estimation of MXenes are explored. As the output of the work, we analyzed that HF and modified acid (LiF and HCl) are the established methods for synthesis. Due to high electrical conductivity, MXene materials are showing extraordinary results in energy storage and related applications. Making a composite hydrothermal method is one of the established methods. This scientific paper underscores the significant contributions of MXenes in advancing green energy storage systems, paving the way for a sustainable future driven by renewable energy sources. To facilitate the research, this article includes technical challenges and future recommendations for further research gaps in the topic.

Abstract:After a brief overview of energy conversion and storage, the advances in MXenes with various properties are reviewed. Comprehensive comparison of MXenes for various energy conversion and storage are conducted, focusing on mechanism, cost, technological maturity, and current progress. Finally, future prospects to improve MXenes performance in energy conversion and storage are also highlighted. Since the initial MXenes were discovered in 2011, several MXene compositions constructed using combinations of various transition metals have been developed. MXenes are ideal candidates for different applications in energy conversion and storage, because of their unique and interesting characteristics, which included good electrical conductivity, hydrophilicity, and simplicity of large‐scale synthesis. Herein, we study the current developments in two‐dimensional (2D) MXene nanosheets for energy storage and conversion technologies. First, we discuss the introduction to energy storage and conversion devices. Later, we emphasized on 2D MXenes and some specific properties of MXenes. Subsequently, research advances in MXene‐based electrode materials for energy storage such as supercapacitors and rechargeable batteries is summarized. We provide the relevant energy storage processes, common challenges, and potential approaches to an acceptable solution for 2D MXene‐based energy storage. In addition, recent advances for MXenes used in energy conversion devices like solar cells, fuel cells and catalysis is also summarized. Finally, the future prospective of growing MXene‐based energy conversion and storage are highlighted.

Abstract:A new, sizable family of 2D transition metal carbonitrides, carbides, and nitrides known as MXenes has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. This is because MXenes exhibit a variety of intriguing physical, chemical, mechanical, and electrochemical characteristics that are closely linked to the wide variety of their surface terminations and elemental compositions. Particularly, MXenes are readily converted into composites with materials including oxides, polymers, and CNTs, which makes it possible to modify their characteristics for a variety of uses. MXenes and MXene-based composites have demonstrated tremendous promise in environmental applications due to their excellent reducibility, conductivity, and biocompatibility, in addition to their well-known rise to prominence as electrode materials in the energy storage sector. The remarkable characteristics of 2D MXene, including high conductivity, high specific surface area, and enhanced hydrophilicity, account for the increasing prominence of its use in storage devices. In this review, we highlight the most recent developments in the use of MXenes and MXene-based composites for electrochemical energy storage while summarizing their synthesis and characteristics. Key attention is paid to applications in supercapacitors, batteries, and their flexible components. Future research challenges and perspectives are also described.

Abstract:As newly emerged 2D layered transition metal carbides or carbonitrides, MXenes have attracted growing attention in energy conversion and storage applications due to their exceptional high electronic conductivity, ample functional groups (e.g., -OH, -F, -O), desirable hydrophilicity, and superior dispersibility in aqueous solutions. The significant advantages of MXenes enable them to be intriguing structural units to engineer advanced MXene-based nanocomposites for electrochemical storage devices with remarkable performances. Herein, this review summarizes the current advances of MXene-based materials for energy storage (e.g., supercapacitors, lithium ion batteries, and zinc ion storage devices), in which the fabrication routes and the special functions of MXenes for electrode materials, conductive matrix, surface modification, heteroatom doping, crumpling, and protective layer to prevent dendrite growth are highlighted. Additionally, given that MXene are versatile for self-assembling into specific configuration with geometric flexibility, great efforts about methodologies (e.g., vacuum filtration, mask-assisted filtration, screen printing, extrusion printing technique, and directly writing) of patterned MXene-based composite film or MXene-based conductive ink for fabricating more types of energy storage device were also discussed. Finally, the existing challenges and prospects of MXene-based materials and growing trend for further energy storage devices are also presented.

Abstract:A family of 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides known as MXenes has received increasing attention since the discovery of Ti 3 C 2 in 2011. To date, about 30 different MXenes with well‐defined structures and properties have been synthesized, and many more are theoretically predicted to exist. Due to the numerous assets including excellent mechanical properties, metallic conductivity, unique in‐plane anisotropic structure, tunable band gap, and so on, MXenes rapidly positioned themselves at the forefront of the 2D materials world and have found numerous promising applications. Particular interest is devoted to applications in electrochemical energy storage, whereby 2D MXenes work either as electrodes, additives, separators, or hosts. This review summarizes recent advances in the synthesis, fundamental properties and composites of MXene and highlights the state‐of‐the‐art electrochemical performance of MXene‐based electrodes/devices. The progresses in the field of supercapacitors and Li‐ion batteries, Li‐S batteries, Na‐ and other alkali metal ion batteries are reviewed, and current challenges and new opportunities for MXenes in this surging energy storage field are presented. In the focus of interest is the possibility to boost device‐level performance, particularly that of rechargeable batteries, which are of utmost importance in future energy technologies. Very recently, the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to the inventors of the Li‐ion battery. For sure, this will provide an additional stimulation to study fundamental aspects of electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:By employing a partial oxidation strategy, nanosized pores are introduced into MXene nanosheets. The resulting holey MXene exhibits faster ionic transport, achieving an aerial capacitance 2.5 times that of unmodified MXene electrodes, and demonstrates excellent cycling stability, retaining 91.7% of its capacitance after 10 000 cycles. Micro‐supercapacitors and flexible electronic devices fabricated with holey MXene demonstrate excellent stability and robustness. MXenes, a novel class of 2D materials, exhibit great potential for energy storage due to their unique layered structure and excellent electrical conductivity. However, improving the intrinsic electrochemical storage capacity of MXenes remains a significant challenge, often requiring the incorporation of other Faradaic materials. Oxidation, in particular, poses a key issue that impacts the capacity of MXene devices. In this study, controlled oxidation is employed to create nanoscale holes within MXene, transforming them into holey MXene (H‐MXene) nanosheets. These porous structures shorten ion transport distances and increase ion transport pathways, thereby significantly enhancing the electrochemical storage capacity of MXenes. The resulting H‐MXene micro‐supercapacitors (MSCs) demonstrate exceptional performance, achieving an aerial capacitance 2.5 times that of unmodified MXene electrodes, along with excellent cycling stability, retaining 91.7% of their capacitance after 10 000 cycles. Additionally, a flexible integrated system combining energy storage and sensing functionalities is developed, showcasing its scalability in self‐powered sensing applications. The incorporation of self‐healing polyurethane (PU) enables the device to retain 90% of its storage capacity after undergoing self‐healing. This study presents a novel approach for developing high‐performance MXene‐based energy storage devices and provides valuable insights into efficient ion transport and storage in 2D materials.

Abstract:This article reviews recent advances on the synthesis of novel two-dimensional(2D)transitional metal carbides and/or nitrides(MXenes),and their applications for electrochemical energy storage and conversions.These applications could be divided into three main categories: rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, and electro-catalysis.In these applied aspects, 2D MXenes exhibit promising capabilities due to the unique 2D structure, metallic conductivity, hydrophilic surfaces and other merits.Their electrochemical properties could be enhanced further by strategies of intercalating,compositing,doping,assembling and so on.This provides an avenue to exploit, synthesize and apply novel type of MXenes and MXene-based materials for broad fields, such as electrochemical energy storage and conversions,electronics,and catalysts.
